4 | betweenus I can’t decide whether I think “pivoting” should now be thought of as a sport or an art form. Actually – let me amend. Let’s make that “durational pivoting.” Whether we’re talking about costume shops who spent the months of March and April making PPE rather than couture, or scenic designers whose canvasses became the six squares of a Zoom screen, theatre artists have been spending the past nine (!) months in a state of durational pivot. Stage actors have developed their camera chops. Playwrights have learned to make space in their narratives for audience interactions. Audiences have learned to attend arts performances in their living rooms, their cars, and under tents. I think it’s heroic on all fronts. A Very Terry Christmas is a symphony of pivots. Between its inception and its premiere, it has taken the following potential forms: •A n original cabaret, performed on the Hertz Stage. •A n original cabaret, performed on the Coke Stage. •A n original cabaret, performed on the Coke Stage with a socially distanced audience. • An original cabaret, performed on the Coke Stage for no audience except a camera crew, to be streamed to a virtual audience. • An original work for the camera, performed and captured on the Coke Stage, to be streamed to a virtual audience. • A city-wide odyssey featuring an actress, her snow globe, her personal assistant and her camera crew, offering Atlanta a giant hug of a holiday gift. Yup. That last one’s where we landed. And while figuring out how to shoot a short film in 14 locations over two weeks, without displacing the reemerging patrons (and the odd rhinoceros) to be found at those locations wasn’t exactly easy, it might have been more fun than I’ve had before or since. If you want to juggle the demands of whale sharks, Varsity customers, celebrity puppets, and — yes — a rhinoceros named Mumbles, you should totally do so with Terry Burrell. I’d ask you to take my word for that, but the beauty is, you don’t have to. Have a seat somewhere comfy, fire up the old internet, and treat yourself to some unbridled, mobile, and wildly pivoting holiday cheer. And here’s to a 2021 with maybe a little less drama.

hen Terry Burrell is asked how she feels about A Very Terry Christmas, the first thing she says is, “Gratitude. Tremendous, tremendous gratitude.” A seasoned Atlanta and Broadway performer, Terry was most recently seen at the Alliance online in her dual cabaret We’re Still Here with fellow Broadway and local star Courtenay Collins. She says she is particularly grateful that at a time when many performers are out of work, she gets to not only return to the stage (and screen) but also reconnect with her Alliance family. “Especially when you’re doing a show like A Christmas Carol, where you’re working ten shows in a week, you’re together a lot,” Terry shares. “One of the greatest parts of doing A Very Terry Christmas was to see the crew again and that

they could work and that we were working on this project together. I’m working with people whom I love, and they’re working with somebody they love. I’m telling you, it was like a family reunion! It was just wonderful. They’re totally in my corner. Totally. I really trusted everybody on this project.” Leading A Very Terry Christmas may seem like a natural step for a multi-talented performer who has done multiple cabarets this year alone, but on-camera acting has not historically been her comfort zone. “I don’t do film and television, as a rule,” Terry tells us. “I do theatre. I had somehow talked myself into thinking that I couldn’t do film or television because the camera didn’t like my face. I don’t know where I came up with that.” Despite her hesitation, the support of the Alliance team helped Terry warm up to the idea. alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre

“[Line Producer] Tinashe Kajese-Bolden walked up to me one day, and she said, ‘The camera loves your face!’” she shares. “These are people who, when they say something to you, they mean it. They would never say something they didn’t mean or be disrespectful in that way. I knew [Videographer Felipe] Barral from filming Backstage and Other Stories at Synchronicity Theatre a few weeks ago, so I know how gifted he is, like everybody else, so I knew I was in good hands.” Terry has long since blazed through her initial misgivings and gone all-in with this unique show that she believes is very suited to her. “The sense of it being built around me really didn’t kick in until maybe a week later. And then I started going, ‘Wait a minute!’” Terry recalls. “[Director Susan Booth] gave me the choice of doing this onstage without an audience or going around the city, and I said, ‘Around the city! Nobody’s doing alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre

12 | encore this. It’s going to be very different but we’re going to make friends.’” And make friends she did, bubbling over with excitement as she recalls visiting Atlanta’s greatest hits including the Varsity, Georgia Aquarium, Zoo

Atlanta, the College Football Hall of Fame, and particularly SkyView Atlanta. “Have you been? GO! You have to go,” she says. “I thought that it was the kind of ride where you’re on the outside, but they are actual gondolas. They look like Cinderella’s carriage. You get in and they close

the doors, and then you take this very slow revolve when you can literally look out at the entire city. I always think of downtown [Atlanta] as the land of Oz because when I’m approaching it; it’s just so beautiful.” For Terry, this whole experience has been like a dream. “The fact that I had this amazing opportunity to do this – who gets a film that’s written around them? I mean, come on! By the end of the day my feet were throbbing but there was this ball of sunshine in my being because I suddenly thought about what I was doing.” “If there’s any trepidation,” Terry says, “it would be because I want it to be really, really good. I want it to be everything that the Alliance wants it to be for people who are watching it. This is our gift to the city of Atlanta – and it’s an incredible city.” We can’t help but agree.

LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS! The iconic Atlanta landmarks that set the stage for this festive cabaret. STORY BY

Greg Mooney

If you’ve been staying home and missing all the iconic spots in Atlanta like we have, A Very Terry Christmas is the perfect way to revisit your favorite locations in Atlanta without leaving the comfort of your own home. We were incredibly lucky to be able to film in all of these popular places and would love to thank everyone at each of these incredible spots who helped make this cabaret a success. alliancetheatre.org | @alliancetheatre

The Varsity Founded in 1928, this distinctive restaurant is a must-visit for out-of-towners and a staple for Atlantans. Known for its snappy ordering system (seriously, familiarize yourself with the lingo before you go in), crispy onion rings and chili hotdogs, and incredible fried pies, The Varsity is the largest drive-in fast food restaurant in the world. Zoo Atlanta Chances are you’ve probably already been to this Atlanta staple, but did you know that it originally started when a businessman bought

Terry Burrell at the scenic Skyview Ferris Wheel.

circus animals at auction? In 1889, George V. Gress purchased the animals after the circus went bankrupt, then donated them to the city of Atlanta. They were initially housed at Grant Park, where the zoo remains. Fernbank The Fernbank Museum of Natural History began with just one woman’s dream to care for a large plot of land that she called Fernbank. She later purchased it and orchestrated plans to use it for educational purposes, making it the wonderful resource it is today! 1st Congregational Church First built in 1908, this historical landmark is the second-oldest African American Congregational Church in the United States. College Football Hall of Fame Nothing says Southern culture like college football, so this location was a must! Dentist Office The polar opposite of the dentist we all love to hate from A Little Shop of Horrors, Jerry Richman is a loyal subscriber and selfdescribed fan of the Alliance, not to mention Terry’s favorite dentist. He’s served the Atlanta community for over thirty years and we’re lucky to feature him and his office in this cabaret! National Center for Civil and Human Rights This center was founded in the early 2000s by civil rights activists – such as Evelyn Lowery, Juanita Abernathy, Andrew Young, and the late House Representative John Lewis – to honor Atlanta’s civil rights history.

Georgia Aquarium The largest aquarium in the United States, this quintessential Atlanta icon is a must-visit for tourists. Their animal cams are the perfect way to check in on the animals while you stay at home, but if you visit be sure to check out their new “SHARKS! Predators of the Deep” exhibit.

Center for Puppetry Arts If you like Sesame Street, the Jim Henson company, or anything relating to the mechanics of puppetry, this is the place for you! From displays to staged shows, the Center for Puppetry Arts is perfect for kids of all ages. Skyview Ferris Wheel More than just another Ferris wheel, this spot is just about as iconic to Atlanta as Seattle’s Space Needle or NYC’s Empire State Building. Get

away from the hustle and bustle to see the city from the comfort of your very own gondola. Atlanta Botanical Garden An Atlanta staple, this garden is known for its over-the-top exhibitions and iconic holiday lights tradition. Innovative and environmentally friendly, the Garden is an oasis for greenery and visitors alike.

Coca-Cola Stage Our personal favorite location for this cabaret (okay, we’re biased) is our very own stage, sponsored by Coca-Cola. With renovations complete in 2019, this new space — with audiences fifteen feet closer to the stage than before — feels more intimate than a 650-seat house really should. We’re proud to have Terry back onstage as the first performer since March!

STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fundraising projects to benefit the theatre. The three committees are the Theatre Advocates, the Theatre Educators, and the Theatre Ushers. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact ATushers@alliancetheatre.org.
