When I was four, my dream was to be a dog. To be a dog and play all day. When my preschool teacher encouraged me to come up with a more logical plan for my life, my heart broke. I’m not quite sure I’ve dreamed as wildly ever since. Until I met Maira Kalman’s glorious beat poet dog, Max, and his cast of “crazy nut” friends. Here was a story unabashedly celebrating dreamers. The wilder the dream, the better. Just because you happen to be a dog is no reason not to dream about being a poet. In Paris. Just because you happen to work at a diner is no reason not to dream about architectural wonders that defy the laws of gravity. Maira’s work invites all of us to rekindle the imaginative dreams that come so naturally to little ones. She is also that rare artist who changes the very way we look at the world. Because of Maira’s work, I look closer. At dogs. At trees. At all of the fascinating people that populate our city. Her work invites us to look closer and appreciate the artistry behind even the most neglected of objects—a bar of soap, say, a closet, or Strunk & White’s classic guide to grammar, The Elements of Style. Our play, Max Makes a Million, is being produced in collaboration with the High Museum’s breathtaking exhibition The Pursuit of Everything: Maira Kalman’s Books for Children, which gives you the chance to experience her marvelous work in person. The chance to contemplate the artistry inherent in the everyday. To dream. So, thank you, Maira, for encouraging all of us to dream beyond what seems logical. Speaking of audacious dreams, once we decided to adapt Max Makes a Million for the stage, we dreamed about who would be the perfect lead artist for the project. Dreaming beyond what seemed possible, we asked Liz Diamond (who, when not directing around the world, chairs the Directing M.F.A. program at the Yale School of Drama). That an artist of her caliber is creating work for families in Atlanta speaks volumes about Liz’s creative spirit as well as the Alliance Theatre’s wholehearted commitment to producing world class theater for all ages. And of course, it reminds us of the value of dreaming big. Thank you, Liz, and thank you, Maira, for making these dreams come true. Ha! mpty your head and walk around the block. Take delight in the unexpected. Choose to be curious, forever open to possibilities. Don’t fret so much if you don’t know something; it might be better to jump in not knowing everything. Find your way by working hard. Believe that you can do something and you probably can — and will! The books illustrated (and often also written) by Maira Kalman over the last three decades are filled with such notions. Settle down with a Maira Kalman storybook and you’re sure to come away with a sense of positivity. Her 18 books for kids (and about a dozen more for adults) are filled with light, color, hope, happiness, crazy characters, and wonderfully expressive, quirky artwork. This summer marks the fifth consecutive year that the Alliance Theatre and the High Museum of Art have joined forces to celebrate one prominent children’s book talent. Each effort has included a staged play for family audiences spun from a children’s book by the artist (like 2015’s Knuffle Bunny, by Mo Willems) combined with a special exhibit of that artist’s work. This year, The Pursuit of Everything: Maira Kalman’s Books for Children opens June 22 and continues through Sept. 15 at the High Museum of Art. In conjunction, the Alliance Theatre presents Max Makes a Million, which is based on Kalman’s jaunty 1990 picture book of the same title. Liz Diamond, who directs the Alliance production in which five actors play multiple roles, is responsible for the stage adaptation. What are the author’s hopes and dreams for a show that revolves around the zany world of Max, a canine with the big dream of being a poet living in Paris? “Every book I have ever written and painted was in some way meant to be a musical,” says Kalman. “So this is not a dream come true, but a reality come true. I know that it will be fantastic. Smart and funny. I can’t wait to see it.” Original music and orchestrations for Max are by Atlanta’s Justin Ellington, a versatile Grammy Award-winning musician, composer, and sound designer who has worked with acclaimed artists and many of the top theater companies in the country. Kalman was born in Tel Aviv and raised in the Bronx from age four. Her body of work — both the fanciful wordplay and the art — is widely adored for its sly and seamless blend of heart, whimsy, energy, and sophistication. Among her standout titles are Stay Up Late, inspired by David Byrne’s famous Talking Heads song (1985); Next Stop Grand Central (1999); Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. starring Max the dog. She has also penned pictorial essays for The New York Times and is responsible for many New Yorker magazine covers, including the famous 2001 map known as “New Yorkistan,” a response to 9/11 (created with Rick Meyerowitz). The excitement over all that a bustling city offers abides throughout Kalman’s books. Yes, Max yearns to get to Paris, but he’s still nuts about his New York City home. In the book, it’s “that crazy quivering wondering wild city … a shimmering stimmering triple-decker sandwich kind of city.” If you’re already familiar with the Max Makes a Million picture book, it should seem downright impossible to imagine any stage piece that won’t be an ear-to-ear, tail-wagging grin. “Do you think it’s easy for a dog to pack a small brown suitcase, put on a beret, and hop on a plane?” Max asks at the start of his tale. “Ha!” Max Makes a Million is filled with terrifically kooky characters, from Baby Henry, owner of Baby Henry’s Candy Shop, to Bruno, an artist who paints invisible paintings in the studio he shares with Max. “Everything I write has some basis in fact,” Kalman says. One of her favorite activities is wandering around the city, collecting material “just by looking at things. “Walking in a park is the great joy and consolation of life. Walking and looking at trees. Listening to the birds. Watching people walk by. Walking leads to an empty brain. An empty brain leaves space for new ideas. A beautiful situation.” 10 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

Is Kalman also a dreamer and a poet like her beloved Max? “Yes. Fortunately, my mother never stopped me from daydreaming. The crucial time of a brain unfettered and alive.” Her late mother, Sara Berman, whom she honored with the adult publication Sara Berman’s Closet, opened the door wide for Kalman to find her path as an inimitable artistic force. Kalman’s childhood was filled with books, concerts, plays, and museums, and she was left to soak it all in without having to be tested. She grew up in “a delightfully cultured house with no oppressive expectations,” and felt free to not take things too seriously. At a young age, Kalman believed in herself – something that has carried her far. “The most important things are patience and perseverance,” she says. “You have to find your own style. Your own voice. Your own way. It is really about being yourself. Though that takes many years of work and searching. “But the important thing is not to give up on it.” What does Kalman hope kids — and grownups — will hold in their heads and hearts after seeing Max Makes a Million? “A chipper mood. A song in the heart. A lightness of step,” she says. “A sense of joy, fun, wonder, humanism, inspiration.”

In the 1950’s, New York City was the home of a seismic shift in literature, music, and visual art. Beat poetry was born, Jazz was flourishing, and artists of all disciplines were challenging the establishment and themselves. This “jumping, jazzy city” is also the home of our protagonist, Max. New York’s rich artistic history inspires his work and shapes his world as he struggles to make his dreams a reality. The “beat” in beat poetry evoked multiple and sometimes contradictory meanings – to be beaten down, to be beatific, and the beat beneath the music. Beat poets were anticonformist and rejected standard literary form. Their poems were often rhythmic, provocative, and utilized a stream-ofconsciousness technique of writing. Romare Bearden, 1911 – 1988 Painter, Collagist, Author “You don’t paint what you see, you paint what you feel.”
Jazz visionary Charles Mingus Jr. applied a similar philosophy to his music. He championed “spontaneous composition” – music performed from a sudden natural impulse without planning or premeditation. His record label, Debut Records, showcased new musicians and produced some of the best live jazz recordings of the era. Visual artist Romare Bearden challenged conventional norms with his vivid and striking work that placed African American imagery in the context of the universal experience.

In addition, he founded Cinque Gallery as an exhibition space for other marginalized artists. Although he is best known for his collages, Bearden also mastered painting, drawing, and songwriting in his lifetime. Max’s dream is to live in Paris, a pivotal place for many of the artists that came before him. In 1950, Bearden studied at the University of Paris and spent seven months enraptured with the city. Jazz legends who worked with Mingus Jr., like Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, went on to experience great success overseas with French audiences. Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, leaders of the beat movement, congregated in Hotel Rachou (now known as the Beat Hotel) to collaborate with fellow poets and debate creative ideas. “Wonderful ideas can come from anywhere,” but Paris has a special pull on our lucky dog and the artists who made that pilgrimage before him.

Max the beat-poet and Bruno the painter of invisible paintings would have fit right in with this community of artists and are modern additions to their legacy. As Max states, “This book is about dreamers. Wishful thinkers. Dreamy blinkers. Crazy nuts.” Who could have asked for a better dog to keep the beat going and the words flowing? onstage and off Adapter & Director Liz Diamond shares her vision for Max Makes a Million We asked Adapter & Director Liz Diamond to share a few details about what she envisions for her adaptation of Maira Kalman’s one-of-a-kind book, Max Makes a Million. Here’s what she had to say: In this show, New York itself is a main character: a cacophonous, crazy kaleidescope of 8 million dreamers from all over the world. And at the heart of it, is our poet dog, Max, the most ardent dreamer of all. Whenever Max steps out into the city in our show, its colors and noise engulf him; he merges into its chaos until suddenly he snaps back into focus as he finds himself waiting in an orderly pack for a red light to turn green, or tucked into a tidy lunch counter, or entombed in an empty elevator. Our show aims to generate these little moments of life the way Kalman floats them from her pages, beautiful, individual, and vitally important lives constantly dissolving and recombining in the big city, making the whole of it a jazzy poem of life. Recombining elements is basic to the way an artist works – a jazz musician, a painter, a dancer, a poet. All are taking in the world and expressing their experience of it with the elements unique to their art, playfully recombining them to tell their special story their way. This is what Max is learning to do with words, and it is what we are trying to do with all the elements of theatre in bringing his story to life onstage. Making a work of theatre of Maira’s wonderful book is so much fun because her books are themselves so theatrical. Her words dance on the page, her cityscapes explode with color, and her characters are so delightfully idiosyncratic and human (especially Max the dog!). Maira’s world is a world, as Max says, of crazy dreamers. It’s the way New York feels to me – surreal, wild, an illogical frenzy of sensation and movement and noise, and, at the same time, full of the most uncanny little moments of individual beauty, of life. 16 ALLIANCE THEATRE | ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

LOUISA THOMPSON (Scenic Designer) is a designer and a creator of theatrical work for young audiences. She received the 2019 Obie award for Sustained Excellence as a Set Designer. She created Washeteria, a sitespecific all-age event that featured the work of Cesar Alvarez and Charise Castro-Smith and New Victory Theatre LabWorks participant. In addition to the 18 years she has taught at Hunter College, she has designed for a variety of theatres: Signature Theatre, Elevator Repair Service, Soho Repertory Theatre, The Play Company, Target Margin Theater, Clubbed Thumb, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Theatreworks USA, Playwrights Horizons, The Foundry Theater Company. profiles LIZ LEE (Lighting Designer) always enjoys her work with the Alliance. Her previous designs include Goodnight, Tyler; Sheltered; Hand to God; Too Heavy for Your Pocket; Ugly Lies the Bone; Ethel; The C.A. Lyons Project; Steel Magnolias; In Love & Warcraft; The Whipping Man; God of Carnage; Sleuth; Cuttin’Up; Tick, Tick … Boom!; and Top Dog/Under Dog. Based in Atlanta, she was producer at the Center for Puppetry Arts for 20 years and continues as their resident lighting designer, most recently designing Beauty and the Beast and Harold and the Purple Crayon. CLAY BENNING (Sound Designer) has been the Alliance’s resident sound designer for 18 years and has designed more than 100 productions for the Alliance, including 29 world premieres, 31 musicals and 28 Theatre for Young Audiences productions. Recent works include Hospice, Winnie the Pooh, Native Guard and Candide. He’s also done design work at Georgia Shakespeare, Atlanta Ballet, Cincinnati Playhouse, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Theatrical Outfit, Geva Theatre, Synchronicity Theatre and the Georgia Aquarium. Awards: Seven Suzi Bass awards for outstanding sound design with 14 nominations. MIKE TUTAJ (Projection Designer) returns to the Alliance Theatre after having designed projections for Ride the Cyclone in 2019. She is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal. MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as general manager, and in 2016 became managing director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as associate producer, production manager and resident stage manager. While in Baltimore, he spent seven years as an adjunct faculty member at Towson University and guest lectured all over the East Coast. Schleifer began his career as a stage manager and has dozens of stage-management credits in New York and regionally. He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben. JODY FELDMAN (Casting Director) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the assistant general manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Feldman is the Allliance’s producer and casting director. She joined the company in 1991 as casting director. We asked Oglethorpe student D’Zerrea Richarte to respond to the themes of the play and to reflect on the importance of having dreams. After working so hard with passion, everyone deserves a chance to reach their dreams. Sometimes, it may seem that a dream won’t become a reality when there are no positive outcomes that follow. In Max Makes a Million, Max exemplifies a model dreamer who is resilient through all obstacles. Old or young, everyone can smile and laugh as Max shares how his dreams come true. When I first read Max Makes a Million, I could not help but remember when my dreams became a reality. After months of studying and working hard, I was able to finally reach my dream of studying abroad in England at Oxford University. Much like Max, I finally had the chance to see a world that I’d only dreamt of. I had the chance to write about and study plays I wouldn’t have come across otherwise. This play is for “Dreamers. Wishful thinkers. (And) Dreamy blinkers.” Nothing makes a dreamer happier than making a dream a reality. In January 2019, the Alliance opened its new, state-of-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 116 productions including nine that have transferred to Broadway. The Alliance education department reaches 90,000 students annually through performances, classes, camps, and in-school initiatives designed to support teachers and enhance student learning. The Alliance Theatre values community, curiosity, collaboration, and excellence, and is dedicated to representing Atlanta’s diverse community with the stories we tell, the artists, staff, and leadership we employ, and audiences we serve. www.alliancetheatre.org. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre.
