What’s your favorite Cinderella story?

I’m not talking about the storybook version — I’m talking the “They came from nowhere and look where they ended up” version. The 1980 U.S. Hockey Team version. The Meghan Markle version.

What’s yours?

Here’s one of my favorites. It’s about a theater that — once upon a time — locked arms and hearts around an idea of what it wanted to be when it turned 50. It’s a story of investing in local artists with a launching-pad laboratory. A story of doubling down on a commitment to make world-class theater for young people, and to do so with partnerships that would advance literacy and empathy. A story of being an exporter of new work, not an importer. And a story of building a new theater that would give the audiences and artists that so generously support it a beautiful place to experience and craft the work they make possible.

Here’s the happily ever after part.

You all liked that story, too. And because of that, here we are. Launching the Cinderella story that is Ever After in the Cinderella story that is the Alliance Theatre at 50. Part of what made me fall in love with Ever After was its brilliant decision to make Leonardo da Vinci the fairygodmother figure who catalyzes transformation. A real, palpable, giant-hearted genius who constantly asked, “Why not?”

YOU are our magic. You catalyzed the Alliance’s transformation and said “why not” with equally great heart – traveling around the city with us while we built a theater, supporting enormous aspirations with equally enormous generosity and being here today.

our white mice will never be four white horses, at least not in Ever After, the musical that christens the Alliance Theatre’s new Coca-Cola Stage. You’d best not expect a pumpkin turned carriage, either. And there’s no fairy godmother chirping “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo.”

In this telling, the heroine figures out how to save herself and others, although Leonardo da Vinci does show up to lend a hand.

Ever After, from the New York songwriting team of Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich, helps celebrate the Alliance’s 50th anniversary season and unveil its $32 million mainstage renovation. It’s adapted from the 1998 movie of the same name with Drew Barrymore as Danielle de Barbarac (the Cinderella character) and Anjelica Huston as her longsuffering and rather realistic stepmother.

who directs. “This is a problem-solving heroine with wit, heart, intelligence and a capacity to see beyond the limits of ‘it’s always been this way.’ ” Danielle “isn’t waiting around for someone to rescue her,” Goldrich says.

The Alliance cast features a number of familiar Broadway faces, including Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid) as Danielle, Rachel York (Victor, Victoria) as Rodmilla the stepmother, David Garrison (Wicked) as da Vinci and Terry Burrell (Dreamgirls) as Queen Marie of France. Atlanta actor Chris Kayser plays France’s King Francis.

Booth says she’s drawn to stories of transformation and was particularly smitten by da Vinci’s presence. The artistinventor who died in 1519 in France fits nicely into a 1509-set story. Booth also appreciates the musical’s “fierce intelligence to both the characters and the context.”

We return to fairy tales, she says, “because they’re archetypal tropes that help us understand the good, bad and the ugly of being alive. It’s why they exist. And particularly in times of circumstantial chaos, we need the solidity of those

stories. The more troubling our real lives become, the more we hunger for ‘once upon a time.’ ” Ever After began its trip to the Alliance about 15 years ago, when Heisler and Goldrich were asked to write the book and score. The show had its world premiere at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse in 2015, and the two have been tweaking it intermittently ever since.

Ever After removes a lot of the “becauses” from the old story, including the famous TV and stage versions told by the great Rodgers and Hammerstein.

It’s more about “why” than “because,” Heisler says. “I’m a huge fan of ‘Ten Minutes Ago’ and the magic of what can happen across a crowded room. But I’m also a big fan of two very human people stumbling toward love.”

“The neat thing about this story is that Danielle challenges the prince,” Goldrich says. “The fact that she’s not very interested makes him interested. That’s so much more relatable than the ‘across a crowded room’ thing.”

Heisler and Goldrich are probably best known for creating children’s musicals ( Junie B. Jones, Dear Edwina), but their

contemporary songs (“Taylor the Latte Boy”) are popular with performers like Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming.

The two met 25 years ago on a wickedly hot day at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop, the foremost training ground for aspiring Broadway songwriters.

“It was like finding a kindred spirit across the room,” Heisler says. “We sat next to each other, and from the beginning it’s been this inexplicable connection. It’s always felt like we’re in mid-conversation.”

They stick to one hard and fast rule when working: Goldrich gets the final say in any debate over music or rhythm; Heisler makes the call on dialogue and lyrics.

It matters deeply that Ever After springs from two strong women, Booth says, calling the team’s songs “gorgeous and deceptively complex” and adding “they hit your ear and stay there — but they also hit both head and heart and stay there.”

Building a show is like building a family, Heisler and Goldrich say. It’s a long and bumpy road — especially for a musical hoping to reach Broadway.

“Sometimes you write shows and sometimes shows write you,” Heisler says. “You never know for sure what song will spin off or what ideas will take shape. You can’t expect to rush it.”

“The real joy, for us, is in writing the songs,” Goldrich says. “And some shows just take longer to bake.”

Once Upon aTime is Now. . .

W

hat comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Once upon a time?” Do you hear birds chriping or are you overcome, perhaps by the sweet smell of pie cooling in a frosty window?

“Once upon a time” can invite the most pleasant, childlike memories and nostalgia. Visions of alluring princesses

flying down carpeted stairwells or colossal towers that overlook acres of lush greenery may take over your senses and sweep you off to a place far, far away.

But what if I told you, that “once upon a time” isn’t so far away? That, in fact, “once upon a time” is as close to as our living-room remote controls.

Once upon a time, there were two

everyday girls, one born in Los Angeles, the other in Berkshire, England. Both loved the arts and humanities. Although they lived 5,405 miles apart, they had several things in common.

Neither came from royal wealth or money, but they became passionately interested in — and pursued — a life in the arts.

Meghan Markle graduated from Northwestern University’s School of Communication with a bachelor’s degree in theater and international studies.

While completing her double major, she worked at the American Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Kate Middleton graduated from Scotland's University of St. Andrews with an M.A. in art history. During a gap year, she traveled to Chile to take part in a Raleigh International charity program.

Well-traveled and well-versed in their respective areas of art, Markle

and Middleton’s worlds would one day collide.

Markle, now the Duchess of Sussex, and Middleton, now Duchess of Cambridge, are on our vision boards, social media blogs and in headlines.

They are the educated, thoughtful, fashion-forward princesses we imagined when wrapping our 5-year old selves in gown-like sheets, waving to our stuffed animals from makeshift carriages.

Our “once upon a time” isn’t really so far away after all. Our once upon a time is today. We are the royals of our time.

We are the fairy-tale endings of our own wildest dreams.

We must first learn to look inside ourselves for the royal fanfare that we sometimes seek. And as for the handsome prince? Well, fairy tales really do come true, don’t you think? Once upon a time was yesterday, is today and will be ever after.

As a pianist, she played on Broadway for Titanic, Oklahoma! and Grand Hotel, among others. Zina graduated from the University of Southern California’s prestigious Scoring for Motion Picture and Television Program, where she studied with Jerry Goldsmith.

MARCY HEISLER (Book & Lyrics) won the Kleban Prize for lyrics and received the Fred Ebb Award in collaboration with Zina Goldrich. Credits include Dear Edwina (Daryl Roth Productions, off-Broadway,

SUSAN V. BOOTH (Director, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on such projects as The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. She has directed world premieres by such writers as Pearl Cleage, Janece Shaffer, former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Stephen King, John Mellencamp and Kristian Bush. She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. JODY FELDMAN (Casting Director) began her theater career as an actress in Atlanta before moving into administration as the assistant general manager at Frank Wittow’s Academy Theatre. Feldman is the Allliance’s producer and casting director.

She joined the company in 1991 as casting director. She has cast and produced more than 200 LORT B, D and TYA productions at the Alliance, encompassing a range of world premieres that includes The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry, What I Learned in Paris by Pearl Cleage, Broke and Troubadour by Janece Shaffer, In the Red and Brown Water by Tarell Alvin McCraney and more than 10 years of Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competitionwinning plays plus such world and regional premiere musicals as Tuck Everlasting, Aida, The Color Purple, Sister Act: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, Harmony, A New Musical and The Prom. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as associate producer, production manager and resident stage manager.

While in Baltimore, he spent seven years as an adjunct faculty member at Towson University and guest lectured all over the East Coast. Schleifer began his career as a stage manager and has dozens of stagemanagement credits in New York and regionally. He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben.

Annette Tanner, founder and president of Broadway Dreams, a nonprofit performing arts organization, talks about the relationship between the Alliance and Broadway Dreams and the future of American musical theater.

Synopsis …

Danielle, orphaned after the death of her father, is raised by her stepmother. To fund a lavish lifestyle for herself and her daughters, her stepmother slowly sells off everything of value in the house, including the family servants who are Danielle’s makeshift family. To save her house and her friends, Danielle impersonates a countess. Henry, a young prince, is disaffected with his life and resists his parents’ attempts to marry him off to royalty. He escapes to the forest, meets Danielle and, during a series of adventures, they fall in love. On the night of the great ball, Henry discovers who Danielle really is. Will the prince and the commoner find their happily ever after?

about the alliance theatre Celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually. In 2007, under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance received the Regional Theatre Tony Award for sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement. In January 2019, the Alliance opens its new, state-of-the-art performance space, The Coca-Cola Stage at Alliance Theatre. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 110 productions, including nine that transferred to Broadway. The Alliance education department reaches 90,000 students annually through performances, classes, camps and in-school initiatives designed to support teachers and enhance student learning. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of three committees working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit the theatre.
