My heart is bursting with emotion. The Alliance Theatre is 50 years old and I have been a part of its journey for 30 of those years. In that time, the Alliance has produced A Christmas Carol 29 times and I have had the good fortune to have been a creative part of many of those productions. I appreciate how this story can get under your skin in a very real and wonderful way. I know I am not alone. But why? Why do we want to immerse ourselves in this particular narrative? I think it is more than the knowledge (spoiler alert) that everything is going to turn out all right and that the curmudgeon will change. It’s like a really good roller-coaster ride that we return to time and again. We know the dips and turns are coming, but we are still thrilled because we WANT to be emotionally engaged. So let’s have at it. Let’s dance with the Fezziwigs, toast with the Fred party, laugh and cry with the Cratchit family, and face those persistent spirits that have haunted us in Christmas Carols past. Or, if this happens to be your “first time” (gasp), welcome to the ride! Theater has the power to entertain, teach, heal, ignite, reassure and hopefully help us to become better human beings. The chance to both see ourselves onstage and connect to someone who is quite different is an advantage to be embraced and celebrated. Though it may take a “Scrooge” longer to get there, empathy will enlighten the darkest mind. I dedicate this production of A Christmas Carol to ALL of the artists, designers, volunteers, board members and staff who have supported, worked on or played in any of the 29 productions to date. And thank you all very much for being at this performance to share in the joy of our anniversary season. As a very wise young person has observed, “God bless us, everyone!” Happy holidays,

ne of Rosemary Newcott’s first life-changing theater experiences came as a New Jersey fourth-grader when her dad took her to Manhattan to see the Lerner & Loewe musical Brigadoon. From that day on, she says, he often reminded her “how she glued her eyes to the stage and didn’t take them off the players for a moment.” 6 ALLIANCE THEATREA| ALLIANCETHEATRE.ORG

This year’s Christmas Carol is the Alliance Theatre’s 29th. Directing it, says Rosemary Newcott, “is really about making sure that you hit those marks of ‘real’ when they happen. And you’ve got to love it or you can’t do it.”

Her first time onstage came in eighth grade. She played The King and I’s Anna Leonowens in a school revue, singing in a lyric soprano voice and getting to know the royal Siamese children. Then there were the Christmas stories. From about thirdgrade on, Rosemary would lead — she says “instigate” — her siblings (one sister, three brothers) in doing a Christmas play for their parents. “Sometimes it would be from different ENCORE ATLANTA | ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCOREATLANTA.COM

perspectives,” she says, “like from the shepherds’ perspective or the innkeeper’s. One time it was from the donkey’s perspective. I realized years later that these were early ‘devising/directing’ experiences. Crazy, huh?” Not so much. Plus it’s a great backstory. Little surprise, then, that Newcott has spent the bulk of her Alliance Theatre career focusing on shows that speak to families and younger audiences — including the company’s annual A Christmas Carol. This season, the show’s 29th, is different. It’s the last time Newcott directs this show as a full-time member of the Alliance staff. On May 31, 2019, she ends her 20-plus-year tenure there, largely as the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families. She has plenty of Christmas Carols on her Alliance résumé — as actor (Scrooge’s sister Fan, Mrs. Cratchit, Scrooge’s lost love Belle), assistant director and director. Charles Dickens’ Victorian ghost story, which she faithfully rereads every season, has never lost its wonder for her. “It’s a story that does not die,” she says. “You see the effects of it year after year after year. In the direction of it

you have to pay attention to what is real, because it can easily become a machine. It just churns itself out in terms of how many scenes are in it, how much movement is in it, how much singing is in it.” Directing it, she says, “is really about making sure that you hit those marks of ‘real’ when they happen and make sure that they’re solid. And you’ve got to love it or you can’t do it.” Newcott moved to Atlanta after finishing graduate school at Northwestern University. She did her undergraduate work at Jersey City State College and, as somewhat of an overachiever, earned bachelor’s degrees in theater, education and English in four years. Just after grad school some Northwestern friends from Atlanta hooked her up to teach with the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program. She didn’t plan to stay, thinking she’d return to Chicago, where she’d made professional contacts. Then she ran across Frank Wittow and his Academy Theatre. It was 1979 or 1980, she says. Wittow (1930-2006) was an Atlanta legend. The Academy was a proving ground for young artists, with a repertory company that included future ENCORE ATLANTA | ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCOREATLANTA.COM

Horizon Theatre co-founders Lisa and Jeff Adler, Out of Hand Theater’s Adam Fristoe, director Mira Hirsch, Tony Award-winning actor Dana Ivey, actor-director Kenny Leon, actor Carol Mitchell-Leon and stage/film actor Bill Nunn, among others. “When I got in the door, Frank Wittow said, ‘What I’m interested in is people who want to act and direct and teach. And do all three.’ And I was like, ‘Ding! Ding! Ding! You pushed all my buttons. That’s exactly what I want to do.’” Atlanta has been her home ever since. Newcott did her first Christmas Carols at the Academy, joining the Alliance family in 1988 on a two-year contract to understudy the great Mary Nell Santacroce in Alfred Uhry’s Driving Miss Daisy. Santacroce was box-office gold. Newcott was an unknown in her 20s. When she went on, which happened only rarely, she’d cover her ears so as not to hear theatergoers groan when they learned Santacroce would not perform. the Alliance’s artistic director in ’88. Some 11 years later, he hired Newcott as the company’s director of theater for youth and families. She’s steered dozens and dozens of shows since then — for families, for middle-schoolers, for the very young (ages 0-5) and for adults. Her acting career became a backburner item. She’s hasn’t ruled out acting going forward but thinks she’ll focus on directing and working with other companies that want to create theater for the very young programs. And she may do some university work. “I just like to keep myself open to whatever projects come my way,” she says. The fourth-grader who thought she was too shy to chase a career in theater has done all right. Newcott recently received a Suzi Bass Lifetime Achievement Award, given to individuals whose “body of work has had a significant and long-term effect on the Atlanta theater community.” She’s previously been named an Atlanta Lexus Leader ENCORE ATLANTA | ATLANTA’S PERFORMING ARTS PUBLICATION | ENCOREATLANTA.COM

of the Arts, best director of 2002 (by The Atlanta JournalConstitution), received a Princess Grace Foundation Fellowship and a Princess Grace Special Projects Award, and earned a 2010 Spirit of Suzi Bass Award, which recognizes a person or organization dedicated to bettering the arts and Atlanta’s artistic community. For now, Newcott is immersed in bah humbugs, Cratchits, holiday carols and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come. Directing A Christmas Carol is different than doing other shows, she says. The cast features a lot of returnees, some repeating their roles, some doing new roles. “You have to honor where they are,” she says, “because everybody comes back to it in a slightly different space. “Some people completely forget the lines and have to re-remember them. Some people pick up right where they left off. And some people bring something very new to the experience, some very new element to their character that you didn’t expect to see.” In that way, it’s a bit like opening a shiny, new gift while spending the holiday with dear, old friends. Newcott expresses it simply: “A Christmas Carol,” she says, “is part of my life.” A

Theatre for The Very Young

o you need to be a certain age to appreciate theater? To be an Alliance subscriber? Do you need to know how to walk? To talk? To sit still? The Alliance Theatre would answer each of those questions with a decisive “no.” Since 2011, the Alliance has been producing professional, original theatrical work for the youngest members of our community (newborn to age 5) through the Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young.

The form breaks the theatrical fourth wall and invites audience members to participate in the telling of the story on their own terms. They’re free to joyfully discover the power of live theater in their own way. They’re not expected to be quiet, sit still or behave in a certain way. Theatre for the Very Young invites participation inspired by the performance. Each show is developed with help from the target audience, with Alliance artists engaging partner preschools and pre-K students as co-collaborators. The work is

created for, by and with the children and designed with their cognitive abilities in mind. To date, the Alliance has developed 10 original productions that have been done on the Woodruff Arts Center campus and at hundreds of preschools in Georgia. These shows have been presented at national Theatre for Youth festivals and have inspired subsequent productions from colleague theaters across the country. They’ve been performed in English, Spanish and multilingually.

There’s a three-play Theatre for the Very Young subscription series available and an annual festival titled Toddler Takeover. The festival is produced on the Woodruff campus in partnership with the High Museum of Art and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, due to a generous gift from Kathy & Ken Bernhardt, longtime Alliance supporters, Theatre for the Very Young was endowed. Thanks to their generosity, so long as there is an Alliance Theatre, there will be work created for the youngest in our community.

She is a 2009 recipient of the Princess Grace Special Projects award and several Suzi Bass awards, including the 2010 Spirit of Suzi award and the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award. She has served on the boards of TYA/USA and Kennesaw State University’s theater department. Rosemary has degrees from Northwestern University and New Jersey City University. She is a member of AEA and SDC. This is Rosemary’s final season as Alliance AD of TYF, and she will be forever grateful for the many gifts she has been afforded through her association with so many remarkable human beings. She has designed costumes for Disney Cruise Lines, Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, SeaWorld San Antonio and Viking Cruise Lines. Mariann has received design awards in New York City, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta, and received distinguished achievement awards from her undergrad and high school alma maters. She leads the costume design program at Boston University College of Fine Arts’ School of Theater. MIKE SCHLEIFER (Managing Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2014 as general manager, and in 2016 became managing director. While at the Alliance, Schleifer has led the administrative team on more than 50 productions and was one of the architects of the “On the Road” season, in which the Alliance produced 12 shows at 12 venues. He is proud to have started the Alliance’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and to serve on the League of Resident Theatre’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. Previously, he spent 13 years at Baltimore’s Center Stage, working as associate producer, production manager and resident stage manager. While in Baltimore, he spent seven years as an adjunct faculty member at Towson University and guest lectured all over the East Coast. Schleifer began his career as a stage manager and has dozens of stage-management credits in New York and regionally. He is married to theater director and educator Laura Hackman and is the proud father of two boys, Jack and Ben.

BOOTH (Jennings Hertz Artistic Director) joined the Alliance Theatre in 2001 and has initiated the Palefsky Collision Project for teens, the Alliance/ Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, local producing partnerships and regional collaborative productions as well as commercial partnerships on such projects as The Prom; Tuck Everlasting; Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; The Color Purple; Bring It On: The Musical; Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away; Sister Act: The Musical; Bring in ’ da Noise, Bring in ’ da Funk; and Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. She has directed world premieres by such writers as Pearl Cleage, Janece Shaffer, former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Stephen King, John Mellencamp and Kristian Bush. She has directed nationally at the Goodman Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, New York Stage and Film, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, Court Theatre and many others. She holds degrees from Denison and Northwestern universities and was a fellow of the National Critics Institute and the Kemper Foundation. She has held teaching positions at Northwestern, DePaul and Emory universities and is a past president of the board of directors for the Theatre Communications Group, the national service organization for the field. She is a trustee of Denison University and a member of the Carter Center’s Board of Councilors. Booth’s leadership is underwritten by the BOLD Theater Women’s Leadership Circle, an initiative to support and promote women’s theater leadership funded by the Pussycat Foundation. She is married to Max Leventhal and is the proud mother of Moira Rose Leventhal.

In celebration of our 50th anniversary season, we’ve asked Alliance artists, friends and family to Chris Kayser, who has been in more than 20 productions of A Christmas Carol, shares his thoughts on the timeless classic. I’m still thrilled by A Christmas Carol, even though at 69 years old, I’ve done the play almost half my life. Charles Dickens is known as one of the greatest writers in the English language for a reason. The story is a brilliantly imagined and brilliantly written meditation on redemption. And since I’m pretty confident that none among us is ready to cast the first stone — we need this story. Scrooge is old. That’s important because he has very little time left, and behind him is a lifetime of cold removal, of arming himself with money for self-protection. His mother is absent in his youth. Later he has a chance at love, but he messes it up. If there was ever a guy who needed women in his life, it’s Scrooge. And yet, and yet — this guy makes it over the finish line. He opens his heart and makes himself vulnerable. So, if Scrooge can do it, surely the rest of us can. We need this story.

Synopsis … Ebenezer Scrooge, a stone-hearted Victorian accountant and money lender, learns the true meaning of Christmas after he is visited on Christmas Eve by four fantastic spirits: the ghost of Jacob Marley, his former partner in the counting house; the Ghost of Christmas Past; the Ghost of Christmas Present; and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. The specters reveal to Scrooge the seeds of his loneliness in his youth, opportunities for happiness still within his reach, and his dire future if he continues in his mean and miserly ways.

about the alliance theatre Celebrating its 50th anniversary season, the Alliance Theatre is the leading producing theater in the Southeast, reaching more than 165,000 patrons annually.
