Plains, TX, District 8 POSTPONED FOR 2021

At the September board meeting, Lea County Electric Cooperative, Inc. (LCEC) board of trustees made the difficult decision not to participate in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association 2021 Government-in-Action Youth Tour trip. This decision was determined due to the current pandemic, unexpected future travel restrictions between states, and unforeseen restrictions while visiting Washington, D.C. LCEC’s main priority is its members’ health and safety.

The Government-in-Action Youth Tour trip is an opportunity that has been available to students since 1978. LCEC is a proud sponsor of this program as local area students learn about electric cooperatives, the State government, and the United States government. LCEC’s board of trustees has full expectations of participating and sponsoring students in the Government-in-Action Youth Tour trip in the future. If you have any questions, call the Marketing and Member Services department at 575-396-3631.

2Ways to Save Energy in the

Kitchen During the Holidays

Ah, the kitchen. It’s undeniably one of the most-loved rooms in our homes. It’s where we gather with family and friends for our favorite meals and memories. But like most of us, you probably aren’t thinking about saving energy when you’re planning that perfect dish. Here are four ways you can save energy in the kitchen with minimal effort.

1. When possible, cook with smaller

kitchen appliances. Using smaller appliances, like slow cookers, toaster ovens, and convection ovens is more energy-efficient than using a large stove or oven. According to the Department of Energy, a toaster or convection oven uses one-third to one-half as much energy as a full-sized oven. Use smaller kitchen appliances, like slow cookers, toaster ovens and convection ovens when possible.

2. Use your dishwasher efficiently.

Only run full loads, and avoid using the “rinse hold” function on your machine for just a few dirty dishes; it uses 3-7 gallons of hot water each use. You can also save energy by letting your dishes air dry. If your dishwasher doesn’t have an automatic air-dry switch, simply turn it off after the final rinse and prop the door open so the dishes will dry faster.

Scholarships Open

All LCEC district offices will remain open on the deadline to receive all applications until 5:00 p.m. Scholarship awards will be announced on or before May 2021.

Lea County Electric Education Foundation Scholarship

Lea County Electric Cooperative, Inc. (LCEC) is committed to the youth of our communities. Since 1988, the LCEC Education Foundation has offered educational scholarships to active members and their dependents to help those seeking higher education. The Foundation has issued over $3.9 million to 2,166 recipients since inception. The scholarship is a one-time scholarship, and the Board of Trustees has increased it from $ 5,000 to $7,500 for the fall 2021.

Eligibility and requirements of applicants:

▶ Be an active member or dependent of a member residing within a county served by LCEC ▶ Be a graduating senior in the current year from an accredited public or private high school, homeschooled, or have obtained a New Mexico/Texas

GED or equivalent within a county served by LCEC ▶ Be entering the military within four months of high school graduation ▶ Be 19 years of age or less

A listing of all requirements is listed on the application. Scholarship applications may be obtained by contacting any LCEC office, high school guidance offices in the LCEC service territory, or online at www.lcecnet.com. An independent panel of judges will review applications during the selection process.

Jackie C. Noack Scholarship

LCEC also manages the Jackie C. Noack Scholarship Foundation. Jackie C. Noack was a respected lineman at Lea County Electric Cooperative, Inc. (LCEC) from 1968 until 1996. On August 8, 1996, Mr. Noack was killed in the line of duty serving the members of LCEC.

On November 18, 1996, the Jackie C. Noack Memorial Scholarship was established at his family's request to honor his memory. Since that date, 16 deserving students have benefited from this scholarship in pursuit of higher education.

Scholarships are available in the amount of $375 per semester. They are renewable up to a maximum of four semesters (excluding any summer or interim semesters) with the total scholarship not to exceed $1,500. Renewal will be subject to confirmation that the requirements of grade point and enrollment have been met. Applications are available at any LCEC office or high school counselor's office.

Power Tip

Close your fireplace damper unless a fire is burning. Keeping the damper open is like keeping a window wide open during the winter.
