Manuel Finol is a visual artist by vocation, study and commitment, a cultural promoter by conviction and dedication. Son of Zulia of proven reciprocal love. He wanted to be a painter and to get it started entering the School of Plastic Arts of Maracaibo. There he had as teachers, among others, Carlos De Solaeche, Rubén Suárez and Víctor Valera.

Venezuelan art ran for the time in which that group of students in Paris created the movement called Los Disidentes, whose air impregnated desires for renewal in decadent art academies, especially in Caracas and later in Maracaibo.

Driven by these events and the fact that the School of Arts of Zulia was going through a period of stagnation and abandonment, some students, led by Manuel Finol, José Fajardo, Eduardo Morán and Régulo Díaz, raised their disagreement with the Ministry of Education , ascription body for that time.

It was in 1951. Promises of investigation and attention to the approach that were not met resulted in the expulsion of qualified claimants students of insurgents.

The Free Zulia Art Workshop was born, organized by those same students, inspired by the experience of the School of Caracas, which had already expressed its rejection of academic practices without renewal. Although they did not proclaim any manifesto, there is no doubt that Taller Libre marked the course of Manuel Finol as an artist, free of thought and action, reflective before the changes, open-minded to the new proposals, in which he ventured without clinging to them .

In 1954 he entered the School of Plastic Arts "Cristóbal Rojas" of Caracas, where he had as teachers Pedro Ángel González, Ernesto Maragall and Francisco Narváez. He returned the landscape as an academic practice, drawing as a method and sculpture as an element of practical expression. Of this time are his works Tolstoy, David, Ramses, Beethoven.

Nuclear Explosion, Matter in Transformation, Cosmic Maternity ", Conquest Dream, The Magic Eye . It is in a way an alert to the present of the earth. All this can happen. The energy is present.

From the Cosmic to the Human (1973) it seems to derive from a philosophical approach, giving visual possibilities to the esoteric reader that he also finds a clear message for him, because indeed the work of Finol, in any of its stages, expresses a high feeling human. This sample suggests an attempt to relate the work of man and place it harmoniously in the cosmic context, that is, with the rest of the created, in a subjective manner consistent with the artist's thought at the time of its creation.

Things of Our Time (1979). It consists of forty markedly expressive works of Social Realism, school whose most recognized exponent in the country was Gabriel Bracho. In fact these figures are beings with an irreverent tendency to decomposition that frighten. They are by-products of a world struck down by pollution and hunger. Again his painting is alert. Procedure that the artist has used to motivate an opinion committed to the subject fact of the work.

But the anecdote is presented without concessions to the tragic. What is exposed are beings that call for reflection but the nobility in the use of stroke and color soften the emotion of the message and the eyes stop at each singularly approached detail, in such a way that the whole reflects harmony.

In 1988, the Collective Anniversary Exhibition was organized at the Ateneo de Caracas. Professional artists participated in it. Finol won the Second Prize with the work Personaje del Siglo XVI. Testimonies of the Memory (1996). Lucky choice of the name for this sample, inscribed in the New Figuration trend. It consists of serene encounters with sleep and memories. They are translucent human figures, without defined features on the face, with a background framed by lines that express stillness. They are groups that refer to the memory of the family album.

Strong colored backgrounds support the whole. Finol is a master of color.

Finol ventured for a short time in what he called "geometric experiences".

The search for an own language oriented him towards Informalism, for the freedom to avoid forms and to enhance the value of color as a noun of the work. The manifestations of this time of work and achievements were reflected in the exhibitions that were held for more than a decade (1955-1968) in the art halls of the country.

On May 12, 1958, Finol was twenty-four years old and that day another expression of his rebellions was inaugurated: the Hall of Rejection. Unpublished exhibition that was exhibited at the headquarters of the Venezuelan Association of Journalists, on Avenida Andrés Bello in Caracas. It involved twenty-nine artists, some of whom subsequently received the National Prize for Plastic Arts. Finol presented three pictorial works. This Hall was organized in clear protest by the discretion with which the authorities of the Official Hall accepted or rejected the participants, without the merits of the works were decisive.

In 1969, the Petrochemical Exhibition was held at the Palace of Industries, Caracas. Two hundred and seventy-four paintings by professional artists were presented. Finol won the Second Prize with the play "Nuestro Origen".

As of 1970, his work showed a different language to that used up to that moment. His creations aroused a certain enthusiasm and were criticized as timidly abstractionist. In short, his work from that time was recognized. Participated in the Air Force Hall of Venezuela, whose sample was composed of seventy-seven paintings and won the First Prize with his Radioactive Insect.

It became clear, no doubt, that Abstractionism had won it. It is proved by his exhibitions Space and Matter, Cosmic Images, From the Cosmic to the Human, Things of Our Time.

In Cosmic Images (1971), he presented thirty-three works in the Vía Margutta Gallery, in Caracas, and later in Maracaibo and Barquisimeto. With this exhibition he moves away from his previous motivations and responds to his personality. The serene exploration, constant and fascinating at the same time, achieves a result implicit in the hallmark that distinguishes it: a vigorous stroke, impregnated with color and texture, that surprises and captivates, an essential function of art. In these works he expressed his dreams and what he senses of the cosmos as a space outside the earth and even a threatening, premonitory futuristic vision of what could happen. Hence, these works received, among others, the names of Explosion, Lunar Walk, Cosmic Space, Floating Figures, Module, Monster Vision,

Manuel Finol embodies a life dedicated to culture. As a plastic, creative and transforming artist, standing up without petulance but with dignity, he has remained alert and observant in the face of fashion and trend and then try and experiment with his own language and stamp, thus achieving a work of recognized talent, strengthened by his perseverance and commitment His works are in various collections of public and private institutions, as well as in countless private collections. Teaching has allowed him to share knowledge and, as an active member of a community, he is the axis of a movement for which the dissemination of music is essential. Simultaneously, he has performed administrative tasks in public bodies and private institutions, always in the cultural field.

In addition to his work in the visual arts, his desire to be a man who creates culture has manifested itself in other areas: insinuating figures as subtle shadows, in human groups of undeniable elegance and sobriety. There is no doubt: Finol transmits serenity of spirit in this evanescent show and as Pedro Francisco Lizardo pointed out in the catalog, "Manuel Finol is in search of transparency as a definitive element of his inalienable artistic condition".

From a very young age he ventured into the theater, in the mid-fifties, he worked as set designer and costume designer for the pioneer Grupo "Mascaras" together with César Rengifo and Humberto Orsini among others.

In 1991, he founded with a group of notable intellectuals and artists the Society of Friends of Culture that later in 1994 would become the New Athenaeum of Los Salias and offered as his headquarters his own residence in the Urbanización Las Polonias Viejas, San Antonio de los Altos. From there he develops an intense cultural activity standing out the School of Painting and Sculpture, under his charge; he prepared the radio program "Cultural Activity in Sintonia", on Radio Sintonía, through which weekly reviews and interviews were presented to various personalities of the country's cultural life.

Since 1996, each year assumes the organization, production and general coordination of the Festival of Symphony Orchestras in the Altos Mirandinos, through which tribute is paid and the work of recognized composers, both foreigners and Venezuelans is publicized. Up to 2010, fourteen Festivals have been held.

Simultaneously with his craft as a plastic artist, he carried out organizational work, always in the cultural area, in public organizations such as INCIBA and CONAC and has been a promoter in private institutions.

Currently, in full physical, artistic and spiritual maturity, he continues to develop intense activity in the company of his children Isabel Cristina and Manuel Enrique, the latter, a plastic artist and photographer who owes the selection and reproduction of the material illustrated in this text.

On the eve of the celebration of the 229th anniversary of the National Day of France "La Féte Nationale", the French Embassy in Venezuela, through the French Alliance, has organized a wonderful exhibition that brings together an important group of works of art masters universal, under an exquisite and specialized team selection Enatem Llc. Spectators and collectors will be able to enjoy a pleasant aesthetic experience with emphasis on representative works of geometric abstraction, constructive art and other trends of modern art, which aims to delve into the knowledge of artists of great notoriety and universal projection , such as: Víctor Vasarely (1908-1997), the history of art considers him as the father of Op-art; Joan Miró (1893-1983), is one of the greatest representatives of Surrealism, in his works he reflects his interest in the subconscious, in the "infantile", in the culture and traditions of his native Catalonia; Alejandro Otero (1921-1990), important Venezuelan painter and sculptor, exponent of abstract and kinetic art, represented in large national and international art collections; Mateo Manaure (1926-2018), master of abstractionism, distinguished by his emblematic works in the University City of Caracas and large-scale public projects; Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923), maximum representative of the kinetic art worldwide, his research has contributed to the art a new form of knowledge about the phenomenon of color, considerably expanding his perceptive universe; Francisco Narváez (1905-1982), an important Venezuelan sculptor, is characterized by a strong ethnic component, expressed in a language of his own synthesis with Negroid and indigenous reminiscences; Rafael Bogarín (1946), a constructive artist who conscientiously manages forms and resources as part of an autonomous language; Luis Chacón (1927-2010), extraordinary master engraver who applied in his engravings the concept of unique work, as if it were paintings avoiding repetition, arrives at three-dimensionality with constructive approaches; Esteban Castillo (1941), artist who has developed in a virtuous manner an extensive constructivist work, based on color and geometry; Darío Pérez-Flores (1936), in his works creates a subtle optical vibration that attracts the viewer towards its center, stimulated by a visual and mysterious emotion; Francisco Hung (1937-2001), consecrated painter, in his works the signs and gestures constitute his plastic language, the force of color fills the void with lines; Hugo Arapé (1942), graphic artist of profuse category, has developed a work with a great poetic charge; Antonio Pérez-Melero, an artist with outstanding skills in art, uses fundamentally the interaction of color, light and form in his work; Manuel Finol (1934), a Venezuelan painter with a long career, presents works from a stage of exploration on geometric abstraction; Gabriel Marcos (1938), artist interested in the constructive plan, highlighting the value of pure colors; Rubén Vásquez (1955), an artist who has developed a brilliant career in the arts, taking on expressive abstraction as his own language; Oswaldo Vigas (1926-2014); Venezuelan artist, his work is an original synthesis between the cultural roots of the Latin American continent and the plastic currents of modernity.

Jean Cocteau said: "When a work seems ahead of its time, it's just that time is behind the work." Undoubtedly, art acts as a catalyst of daydreams and utopias, at the same time it makes us problems and opens enigmas. Build the collective memory of societies and project a future of changes. The French Alliance presented the exhibition Grand Masters that was framed in the programation of the Week of France 2018.

The opening was in charge of Romain Nadal, Ambassador of France; François Dumiot, General Director of the French Alliance; and the Collector Claudio Giummarra.

The exhibition, which was held at the headquarters of the French Alliance of La Castellana, brought together works by Víctor Vasarely, Joan Miró, Alejandro Otero, Mateo Manaure, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Francisco Narváez, Rafael Bogarín and other consecrated Artist.

In this way, the French Alliance continues its action of projecting culture and being a bridge between France and Venezuela.
