LETTER FROM THE CHAIR & PRESIDENT
Ian Aitken, M.S.C., CFA Enactus Canada Founder & Chair Enactus Canada Alumnus
The only constant is change. While this may be a truism, Enactus teams across Canada continue to embrace change to create impact, not only for themselves, but the communities they serve. The 2022-2023 year at Enactus Canada was a year for firsts. For the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to gather in person, and gather we did. We hosted five flagship events in a single year, bringing together the brightest minds in academia and business from across Canada in the spirit of competition, collaboration, and celebration. For many, this was their first chance to attend an in-person event. A chance to connect with business and philanthropic leaders, but most importantly each other, to experience the magic of Enactus - together. New partnerships were formed, best practices were shared, and we all pushed each other to improve - all in the name of making a greater impact on the people we work with and for.
Ian Aitken - M.S.C., CFA Founder & Chairman Enactus Canada
Our National Champion team, Wilfrid Laurier University, is a shining example of embracing change and using it to foster innovation. Their hard work and dedication to helping build better lives for those in Indigenous communities earned them a final four finish at the Enactus World Cup 2023, joining other World Class teams from Australia, Egypt, and Tunisia on the big stage. This marks the 8th consecutive year a Canadian team has made the final four, dating back to 2016. At Enactus Canada, we are only as good as the community we foster. That’s why, thanks to the feedback of our students and the generosity and vision of our funders, we’ve doubled down on programming that focuses on inclusion, climate action, and mental health. Looking to the year ahead, we are proud to report that along with new programming, Enactus Canada is moving forward with a new Strategic Plan designed to streamline operations, better our offerings, and let the rest of Canada in on what we believe is its best kept secret. Our four strategic imperatives are: Enhancing the Enactus Experience – by ensuring all our stakeholders, new and long-standing, get to experience the best Enactus has to offer Growing Our Brand – by telling the world about the amazing work we do together. Strengthening Our Financial Health – by securing the resources from a variety of sources to be even better than we are. Pursuing Operational Excellence – by building on the solid foundation that is Enactus Canada to ensure we are performing at the top of our game so you can be enabled to do the same. We have made such a large impact in the last year and we’re just getting started. With that in mind, we are pleased to pass the torch to our new President and CEO, Catherine Fowler, effective December 2023. We both welcome Catherine and offer gratitude to all the Enactus stakeholders, from our national office staff to our board of directors, the funders to the faculty, and of course, the inspiring students for making Allyson’s time at Enactus magical. Here’s to a great future.

WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY
ENACTUS CANADA NATIONAL CHAMPION ENACTUS WORLD CUP 2023 FINALIST
Imagine living in an overcrowded home with moldy walls that are making you ill but with limited options for relocation. Or if you had to feed your children milk that you’re afraid can make them sick because you really have no other choice. These are just two of the harsh realities that people in vulnerable communities are facing every day. Our National Champion team from Enactus Laurier has set out to change the way we think about housing and food through their two flagship initiatives, Kuponya Innovations and Safi.
Kuponya Innovations is an initiative that works with Indigenous communities in the Canadian Northwest Territories to address the more than 42% of housing that fails to meet national housing standards. Students co-create sustainable, climate-resilient, cost-effective tiny homes with and for remote communities to help people transition to healthier living situations. The team’s approach includes working with residents in the areas of construction and maintenance, building small businesses to support housing needs, and promoting energy-efficient designs. Each Kuponya home diverts more than 450,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills and costs a third of the price when compared to traditional home building in Northern Canada. With contracts in place, the team is set to launch their first pilot home this coming spring. Safi is a simple solution that aims to help the 90 percent of farmers in East Africa that do not pasteurize their milk, putting many people at risk of life-threatening diseases. Safi is a portable, easy-to-use pasteurization device that kills harmful pathogens in milk without compromising taste. The team is currently working with 2 milk cooperatives to pilot over 300 devices with small-scale farmers in Rwanda.
OKANAGAN COLLEGE UNUSUALLY GOOD FOOD COMPANY ENACTUS CANADA NATIONAL RUNNER UP What if you could turn a natural resource that constantly goes to waste and turn it into a delicious snack that can help feed the 5.8 million Canadians who struggle with food security? What if you built a social enterprise with recurring revenue streams to fund your work while also saving millions of liters of water and diverting CO2 emissions? The team from Okanagan College made these “what if” a reality and started the “Unusually Good Food Company” to address the nearly 470 million apples that are sent to waste annually. Apples that are perfectly edible but fail to meet grocery store vanity standards. With the help of a local non-profit, Unusually Good Food Company uses an innovative process to dehydrate perfectly edible apples and turn them into healthy apple chips.
These apple chips are then donated to breakfast and lunch programs at local schools, food banks in the Okanagan community, and internationally, to countries like Ukraine, Syria, Cuba, and Sri Lanka. The team innovated even further by once again using the same beautiful, imperfect apples to produce a high-quality juice with an extended shelf life. By creating a recurring revenue stream with their juice, they’re able to pay farmers for the apples that would have otherwise gone to waste, fund their work, and expand their product line to create new products like cherry juice, fruit pomace candles, and even a hard cider. In 2023, Unusually Good Food Company secured contracts to sell thier unusually good juice in 19 Loblaws locations in Canada, generating $76,000 in revenue. The team has donated over 27,000 servings of apple chips which has diverted 83,000 lbs of waste, conserved 31,000,000 litres of water, and diverted 251,000 lbs of CO2 emissions.
SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY SQUARE ROOTS & BIOVAULT ENACTUS CANADA NATIONAL FINALIST According to a report by Second Harvest, 58% of food produced in Canada is wasted annually. From that 56.5 million tones of food, 32% of this could be redirected to support Canadians in need from coast to coast. The cost savings of this potentially rescuable food is nearly $49.46 billion dollars that can help feed a hungry country. Square Roots is a community interest corporation and Enactus Saint Mary’s longestrunning project. Started in 2016, students work in tandem with local farmers to tackle both food waste and insecurity by taking perfectly edible produce that doesn’t meet grocery store vanity standards and helping to feed hungry communities. Each one of their 10 locations and 15 community entrepreneurs are empowered to source ‘seconds’ produce from farmers and sell them back to the community at a $1/pound. In 2023, the team secured 152,000 lbs of produce that helped feed hungry Canadians. Produce was donated to 17 schools, 9 food banks, and a retirement home, What happens to the produce that can’t be sold? Enactus Saint Mary’s innovated and identified a way to complete the cycle by taking organic food waste and using technology to turn it into opportunity. Their newest initiative, Biovault, uses anaerobic biodigesters to turn food waste into fertilizer and fuel. The mechanical stomach is fed with organic refuse that is then decomposed by bacteria in an oxygen-free environment to return a nutrient-rich fertilizer that is then sold to farmers. Ensuring that the entire growing process sees as little waste as possible, while producing food to help feed hungry communities across Nova Scotia.
UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA NIBI ENACTUS CANADA NATIONAL FINALIST Did you know that there are more than 150 long-term water advisories in Indigenous communities across Canada, where water is declared to be unsafe for human use or consumption. Many of these have been in effect for more than 25 years, leaving more than 2 million people without access to a reliable source of clean drinking water. Drawing on the lived experience of one of their team members, Enactus University of Ottawa created Nibi, a social enterprise that facilitates access to safe and clean drinking water through community-tailored filtration infrastructure. Students work with Indigenous communities under boil water advisories and industry experts to conduct water quality testing and identify contaminants. Because no one community is the same, no single solution will be the same. That’s why the team then collaborates with water specialists and engineers to develop a solution tailored to that specific community. Their upcoming pilot program is projected to help provide 22 homes with 10,500,000 litres of clean drinking water, saving 300,000 water bottles worth of plastic waste, 12,000 lbs of oil, and 36,000 lbs of CO2, and conserve 498,000 litres of packaged water from having to be shipped to remote communities.
ARIELLE LOK STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR NATIONAL CHAMPION
Enactus Canada operates the Student Entrepreneur National Competition, proudly presented by HSBC Bank Canada. It is the only national initiative of its kind that celebrates the commitment, determination and achievements of full-time students who also operate their own business. This year’s Student Entrepreneur National Champion was Arielle Lok, owner of Peko Produce. It’s no secret that the food waste is a big problem in Canada. According to Second Harvest, $49.46 billion dollars worth of avoidable food waste happens every year in Canada, and of that, 31% is due to vanity standards and overstocking. This food waste accounts for 8-10% of GHG emissions responsible for climate change. Combine that with the highest increase in food costs since 2010 and we’re left with one big question: How are we, as a society, wasting so much food while so many people in Canada are struggling to put food on their plates? Peko is Western Canada’s first online grocery store for “peculiar” goods. A 21st century solution with a simple mission: Fight food waste and empower access to affordable, healthy diets.
The Peko team rescues “peculiar” & surplus food products from suppliers that would otherwise go to waste, and uses it to create their own virtual grocery store. Peko’s team of dedicated packers creates 12+ lbs boxes of this produce which contains 9-10 varieties of imperfect fruits and vegetables. These are then sold to consumers on a subscription or one-off basis for $30 and delivered on specific days throughout the week. This provides savings of up to 40% on healthy groceries. Since May 2021, Peko has saved 200,000 lbs of produce from reaching landfills, filling stomachs, and saving Canadians more than $750,000 in groceries. By leveraging business relationships and their supply chain, Arielle and the team at Peko have been able to increase profit margins while keeping consumer costs exactly the same, with the ability to increase margins even further, as they continue to scale in a volume-based industry.
STUDENT LEADER OF THE YEAR Alexander Smith Wilfrid Laurier University
The Student Leader of the Year Award, proudly presented by John Dobson Foundation recognizes the Enactus student leader (president or copresident) who has made the most outstanding contribution to their Enactus team. This award has encouraged student leaders to go above and beyond to make remarkable contributions to their Enactus teams, ultimately leading the development of creative and innovative programs that address the unique social, economic and environmental needs in their communities. The 2023 Student Leader of the year was Alexander Smith of Enactus Wilfrid Laurier University. For three years, Alexander navigated Enactus Laurier through the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic while maintaining a clear and strong vision for the team. If anyone had concerns with respect to how the team would make it through, all you had to do was “talk to ‘Zander”. He was the face of strength, calm, positivity, and (most of all) kindness in the face of unprecedented and uncertain circumstances. Alexander made key decisions that helped the team both grow and thrive in the face of adversity. He led Enactus Laurier’s transition from being a business student club to being part of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union (WLUSU), exposing the team to a wider and more diverse group of students and strengthening the team as a result. This paved the way in merging both the Waterloo and Brantford campuses to create one unified Enactus Laurier team.
Alexander led his team to three National Championships and two runner-up finishes at Enactus World Cup. Enactus Laurier’s championship pedigree is supported by the strong foundational pillars that Alexander set in place: Building processes for sustainable enterprise creation, laying out clear expectations for all team members, and exposing Enactus to a wider student audience.
HE WAS THE FACE OF STRENGTH, CALM, POSITIVITY, AND (MOST OF ALL) KINDNESS IN THE FACE OF UNPRECEDENTED AND UNCERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES Alexander graduates with a legacy as more than just a team president; he was a quiet leader who didn’t seek the spotlight. He was a steady, dependable motivator that brought out the best out of his teammates and helped them to realize their true potential. His passion, determination, and unwavering spirit remind us all of the power that lies within ourselves to make a real difference and create a better world.

Once a year, the Enactus World Cup brings together an international network of student, academic and business leaders to showcase how our participants around the world are making a difference. National Champion Enactus teams meet at the Enactus World Cup where they present the results of their sustainable business and entrepreneurial action projects to a group of business, policy, and other global leaders. This event is the culmination of millions of hours of dedicated and innovative work by our student teams — a celebration of projects, jobs, and opportunity that all maps to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Enactus World Cup 2023 was organized by a joint venture between Enactus Netherlands and Enactus Canada. The event was supported by many generous Canadian donors to ensure it would take place in October at Royal Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. A field of 29 challengers comprised of National Champions from Enactus country operations around the world competed in the prestigious Enactus World Cup championship. Enactus Wilfrid Laurier University joined the National Champion teams from Egypt, Tunisia, and Australia in delivering their world-class presentations to a panel of global business executives during the Final Round of Competition at Enactus World Cup 2023. With a Top 4 finish at the Enactus World Cup 2023, Enactus Wilfrid Laurier University cemented an 8th consecutive appearance for Canada at the Final Round of Competition, dating back to the Enactus World Cup 2016 in Toronto, Ontario. The competition was just one of many elements of the four-day event. Other aspects included SDG Excursions highlighting innovations in the Global Goals around the Netherlands, the finals of the Action with Africa Challenge, a screening of the Enactus France documentary “Always Dare,” an executive Dare to Lead dinner, a special session to discuss SDG 12: Responsible Consumption & Production, and the Global Goals Square on the Jaarbeursplein outside the Beatrix Theatre.
