Trust the Process

Denise Bernard has always been determined to do more than what was expected. This NY born Dominican has always put herself in position to succeed. Now, as Program Manager (PgM) at Google, she is doing it for others. We recently sat down with Denise to further understand her journey and see what she has in store for us next.

JDV: What exactly does a PgM do and how did your career journey place you in this role?

DB: A Program Manager is the person that creates order out of chaos. We strategize, organize, plan, and ensure every stakeholder understands their role in the end to end execution of a project. My career has been non-linear. Prior to graduating from Manhattan College with a bachelors in Computer Information System, I had interned at American International Group (AIG), an insurance company. Post graduation, my former manager, offered me a position to lead an internship program for students at AIG. This program was in partnership with the All Stars Project (ASP),

a non profit organization that provides quality after school programming for students. This was the same program I had done years prior and gave me the opportunity to work on my first “project”. After a successful internship, I was offered a position in Compliance.

To this day, I have not met a single person that’s actually applied for a compliance role, you land in the role. To say I learned how to thrive in ambiguity is an understatement and during this time, I learned how to execute and scale projects. After three years, I pivoted to Google, and the size and complexity of our programs is what keeps me challenged and engaged.

JDV: What were some of the hurdles you encountered on your career/personal journey?

DB: On a personal note, I lost my mother to breast cancer when I was 20, and it has been the single most defining moment in my life. I am both grateful to have experienced her for the time we had, and for how much her absence has evolved me. In her last months of life, my mother used to say, “this apartment is dusty” and my response was “Mami, this apartment is clean”. The day we buried her, I went home and gasped when I finally saw the dust, she was right, and now I could see it too. On that day, I became truly aware of my surroundings, learned to be present, and actively search for ways to be of service. I genuinely appreciate the life I get to live, the people that nurture and love me, and the opportunity to reciprocate that love. From a career perspective, I unexpectedly experienced imposter syndrome when I began my career at Google. People kept asking me, how did you get in? Quite honestly, I didn’t know anyone working in tech or anyone within the company. I just applied online and was hired. In my first three months, I failed at my project. The feelings of, am I smart enough, do I really belong here, started to creep in. Luckily, I worked for a company that had a no blame culture and believes in post mortems. I was able to get the support I needed, was paired with a mentor (turned friend, hey Michee!), and found a community of people that I could relate to. Five years later, I’ve learned to take risks and fail fast, because that is where growth happens.

JDV: Would you say that your personal hurdles outweighed the career hurdles you encountered?

DB: Yes, my personal loss taught me resilience, empathy, determination, and how to maximize life, because we are on borrowed time.

JDV: How do you make yourself of service to others?

DB: This is a full circle moment for me. I am a national board member for ASP, the same non profit that opened so many doors for me. I’m personally honored by the opportunity and continue to financially support as well as mentor students of the business program, Development School for Youth (DSY). I recently helped organize an event called Pathways to Google, to demystify roles in tech for high-school students. Black and Latinx students (including students from DSY) learned about different roles including, UX, Product Management, Sales, Product Marketing, and Software Engineering. Awareness sometimes is half the battle for young people, so seeing the students evaluate the skills needed for those roles, and being confident they can acquire these skills, was just priceless.

JDV: What are some of your favorite things to do in New York and back in DR when you are visiting?

DB: Lately, I have felt the need to slow down. My current favorite things to do in NYC are visit coffee shops, do hot yoga, go to museums, and I’m also a huge fan of sensory deprivation (must visit Vessel Floats in Brooklyn). I like trying new restaurants with friends, even though, Dominican food from Washington Heights, is my happy place. When I’m back in DR, I savor all of the simple things and I love a good resort. My father grew up in the countryside of Santiago. So envision roosters crowing at 6am, picking mangoes and avocados from the tree, and pitch black nights. Besides all of the amazing food and reconnecting with family, I love watching the stars, it’s just a beautiful sight. At a resort, give me a pool, a drink, and a spa, and my smile will say the rest.

JDV: JDV: How does JDV fit into your everyday?

DB: JDV has been a serendipitous surprise in my life. I was invited and signed up to go to Barbados without any knowledge of what I was doing or who I was going with. Considering all of the unknowns, I had a blast, and today I feel like I’m part of a vibrant community. There’s so many great people with a passion for exploring and traveling to the unknown. It gives me the opportunity, to come out of my own shell, and engage with like minded individuals.

JDV: Truly appreciate the time spent during this amazing conversation Denise. Looking forward to being a part of whatever you have in store for your future!
