Hi Disc Golf fans, I’m so glad that you have a chance to read the first ever Chasin’ the Chains magazine. We are proud to unveil the magazine at The Glass Blown Open.

We work year-round to put on what we believe is the best event in the world and we appreciate you making the commitment to coming to Emporia for the week.

This magazine is a celebration of the sport that we all love so much. The growth of disc golf is evident not only in Emporia, but across the world.

Dynamic Discs is committed to providing the best products, the best customer service, and best tournaments of anyone in the world. Our success comes from you, and that is why we are so passionate about delivering you the best products.

Each new year allows us to introduce new products to the disc golf market. While many of these products hit the shelves in March and early April, there will certainly be more as the year continues.

In February, we seemed to break the internet with all of the hype and excitement around the Sheriff release. We couldn’t keep this disc in stock and the same could be said for the retailers who were selling these in record fashion. In March, we introduced the Slammer, Patriot basket, and backpack cart by Züca. April brings the highly anticipated Criminal, Junior Judge and the Junior Recruit basket. The Deputy will become available in May for the Trilogy Challenge, and we hope to release the Scout, our most portable basket to date, for the holiday season.

The Junior Judge and Junior Recruit are new products that we are excited to introduce to elementary schools across the world. Our mission is to grow disc golf at the junior level, and we believe that placement of these in schools will allow PE classes to introduce and teach the fundamentals of the game to children at a younger age than ever before!

We are excited to host the PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championship in Emporia for 2018, 2019 and 2020. Course improvements at Jones Park and Peter Pan Park began in March to better accommodate players of all skills and abilities. To host an event like the Junior World Championships, we need to have more courses that are suitable for junior play, and these changes have made that a reality. We are dedicated to growing disc golf at the junior level and appreciate what Emporia has done to support the growth of disc golf.

Two new nine-hole courses at the Flint Hills Tech College and Hammond Park are pivotal to being able to host the Junior World Championships. We have dreams to plant another course or two in the Emporia area over the next several years, which will allow the Glass Blown Open to expand even further with the total number of players.

With four RVs traveling the country and hosting events on a daily basis, we have no shortage of things going on throughout all parts of the United States. For the last three years, we rented AT&T Stadium to host a disc golf event. I’m excited to take the Disc Golf Experience to Nashville, Tennessee and host an event inside Nissan Stadium on July 15th. We look to rotate this event from stadium to stadium so that we can play disc golf in as many different stadiums as possible.

“I do feel that I’m way more at the top of my game than I have been before,” Pierce said. “I don’t know how these ladies are feeling, but I know if I’m at the top of my game I’m going to be hard to beat.”

It has been quite a year for Pierce.

She returned home to Dynamic Discs after several years of sponsorship with another company. Returning to Dynamic Discs has energized her. The support and enthusiasm of Jeremy Rusco and the entire Dynamic Discs family not only encourages Pierce, but helps grow the sport She said the relationship between sponsor and player is “symbiotic” — with all parties involved benefiting from the relationship. The sponsorship, which took effect on January 1, was sealed with a handshake and promise to work together. »

“For me, personally, sponsorship is being supported — financially, emotionally — in all aspects,” Pierce said. “Support comes in many forms. Anyone can pay you — any of these companies can pay you. They want me here and I want to be here. All of the promotion is awesome.

Right away they said, ‘what is your favorite disc, let’s put your name on it.’ Just walking through this office with their 40 employees, they are all so helpful and welcoming. Everyone is benefiting from it.”

The Paige Pierce signature disc is the Lucid Convict. She said the disc is versatile and dependable.

“Rusco gave me a signature disc,” Pierce said. “It will be the Lucid Convict Signature Edition. I love it — absolutely love it. I wouldn’t pick a signature disc that I didn’t throw and love. I feel like it is the most versatile fairway driver that I have ever thrown. It is very dependable and just goes exactly where you want it to go. It is going to be a very useful tool in my bag, and to have my name on it is just awesome.”

It’s an amazing sport; it is great exercise, it is fun, it’s competitive.

Pierce, who averages a throw of 400 - 425 feet in tournament play, knows her discs. Her bag contains other go-to favorites in addition to the Lucid Convict. When it comes to putting, she is using the Marshal often and for mids the EMAC Truth is a favorite. She is also a fan of the Defender for a driver.

Offseason training for Pierce has been more extensive this year.

The nicer weather has given her more opportunities for practice. She shared her practice schedule, which most frequently occurs a few steps outside her doorway in Plano, Texas.

“I walk outside my door and take about 50 steps and there is a huge park,” Pierce said. “When we moved there when I was in fifth grade, I don’t think my parents had any idea how much I would use the park. I have a training schedule. »

Pierce doesn’t hold herself to a set timeframe for practice each day. Rather than gauge her practice success on the clock, she focuses instead on a feeling of accomplishment. She listens to her body and when her body tells her practice is over she calls it a day.

Disc golf practice for Pierce began at the age of 4 when her dad first put a disc in her hand.

She fell in love with the sport and only hopes to see it grow as more children are introduced to the game. She encourages parents to give their children discs and let them have fun.

“Let the kids choose — if you really want them to play — show them the sport and make it fun and exciting, but if you force them I feel like they kind of stray away,” she said. “It’s an amazing sport; it is great exercise, it is fun, it’s competitive. If you are a disc golfer, every bit of free time you get you try to do it. Put the disc in their hand and let them fall in love with it on their own.”

Disc golf is a sport anyone can play and see success. While not everyone can be a world champion like Pierce, she said all types of people can play well if they can utilize all parts of their body correctly.

“I think it is about using your body properly, and the proper technique and form can translate into a great shot no matter what your body type is,” Pierce said. “For me, I just try to use every part of my body and work together to propel the disc. If you

use all parts of your body correctly and get the timing down in one fluid motion, then it works out really well.”

Having the right discs doesn’t hurt either, according to Pierce. She believes that Dynamic Discs’ partnership with Latitude was a great move that results in a consistent product. She said the discs are quality “straight off the shelf” and rarely have inconsistencies — something other companies cannot claim.

She offers beginners a valuable tip — don’t overload on discs. Instead, focus on getting comfortable with the discs you have.

“I almost think you can have too many discs,” Pierce said. “That is one of my beginner

tips. Just carry five to 10 discs. And when you find a mold you like better, grab 10 of them. Don’t grab 40 different molds because you are complicating it. If you take out the variables, your game is going to be more precise.”

When it comes to Emporia, Pierce said people may not realize the impact disc golf has on the city. She is adamant Emporia is not “a” disc golf town, but is “the” disc golf town. The number of courses available, the Dynamic Discs operation and the number of tournaments held in Emporia make it a destination among disc golfers.

“Emporia is the disc golf town,” Pierce said. “Whether you are a fan of Dynamic Discs or you throw another brand, whatever it may be, when you think, ‘where is the place to go that is a disc golf town’ it is Emporia. People may not fully realize — what this is as a disc golf empire. It is unheard of — absolutely unprecedented. There is nothing like it.”

Dynamic Discs and Pierce are focused on growing the sport. Pierce calls the growth of disc golf during 2016 “explosive.” Disc golf is garnering national attention — much of which can be attributed to the efforts of Dynamic Discs. The massive marketing campaign launched by Dynamic Discs has been effective.

Pierce said in addition to spots on ESPN and other national news shows, Dynamic Discs has tapped into the power of social media. The company recently participated in a mannequin challenge that was viewed more than 200,000 times online. Dynamic Discs regularly releases new products — everything from discs to bags to cool new shirts — that are quickly snatched up by eager disc golfers.

“Another thing that drew me into Dynamic Discs is how often they are putting out new product, whether it be discs, banners, Bobby Brown coming up with new videos,” Pierce said. “They are coming out with shirts, hats, baskets and bags.

Literally there is nothing they don’t have their hand in. I think with Rusco being so young and hip, he and his whole crew really know what is popular and what the general public wants, and I think they do really well at keeping it fresh.”

In years past, Pierce spent hours explaining what disc golf was to people. Now she said people recognize the logo or her and approach her with questions. Rather than explaining what disc golf is, she is connecting with fans and sharing pointers. or more than two decades, professional disc golfer Eric McCabe’s passion was winning national tournaments. In that time he has earned almost 100 wins and was crowned the 2010 PDGA World Disc Golf Champion.

McCabe still relishes a good win, but his bigger joy is designing disc golf courses all across the country for others to enjoy.

“It has been an honor to have someone like Dynamic Discs standing behind my name and us putting our names together, collaborating to help grow the sport.” McCabe said.

With the explosion of sport, McCabe is seeing a dramatic increase in demand for his services. He is having to work overtime to keep up.

McCabe currently has several 18-hole courses under development and a large, 27-hole championship course in Michigan.

Dynamic Discs and Eric McCabe offer a turnkey design and installation services for clients.

McCabe’s years of experience play into developing a better course.

“As a touring professional for more than 20 years, I have played every type of course imaginable,” McCabe said. “Some good, some bad. As a professional I know what pros look for, so it gives me an ability to create a championship course.”

ne of the newest disc golf courses in Kansas receiving rave reviews by disc golfers is in Cottonwood Falls, which is only a short 20-minute drive from Emporia.

Cottonwood Falls Mayor Boyce Baumgardner helped develop the project and called on McCabe to design a championship-level course in Cottonwood Falls.

“From the beginning of the design concept, the goal was to blend the course into the scenic vistas of Swope Park, while embracing the native limestone heritage of Chase County,” Cottonwood Falls Mayor Boyce Baumgardner said. “We have stayed true to that vision and added the elusive challenges of Buck Creek.”

“There is not another course in Kansas that can compare to the challenges of this course,” McCabe said. “I’m very excited to be involved in the design of the Chase Disc Golf Course.”

There are two design features that will make this course unique to almost any known disc golf course: The rugged Buck Creek area features several holes that cross along and over the water, with challenging elevation changes.

A set of limestone stair steps are evocative of the area, and hole 14 features a formation of Cottonwood Limestone Outcrop stones that will be the iconic feature of the course and represent the signature hole. The pyramid formation elevates the basket to more than 12 feet from ground level.

The project started in 2015 with a groundbreaking in November and was completed by the summer 2016. The course was funded through donations, and is open to the public at no charge.

“This course is a hidden gem because it has a little bit of everything with some holes in the woods, some holes with tight fairways, some longer open holes, some creek crossings and an island hole.” McCabe said “It has really come together as one of my personal favorite courses that I have put in.”

Having a championship-quality course will be beneficial to Chase County and officials are looking forward to having the best players in the world challenge themselves on this new Eric McCabe Signature Course. n

FHTC and Dynamic Discs partner for a

CAMPUS DISC GOLF COURSE

W

hat started out as a simple solution to provide more practice space for the Glass Blown Open players, has now turned into a partnership that benefits the Flint Hills Technical College students and the community with a new permanent disc golf course.

During the 2015 Glass Blown Open Tournament, Dynamic Discs installed a temporary course on FHTC’s property to accommodate the many disc golfers in town for the tournament.

After the tournament FHTC president, Dean Hollenbeck, and Jeremy Rusco, owner of Dynamic Discs, then discussed the idea of how to create something more permanent.

The result is a 9-hole course on Flint Hills Technical College’s main campus at 3301 W. 18th Avenue that was designed by 2010 PDGA World Champion Eric McCabe and also a Champion Disc Golf Course Designer.

McCabe looked forward to putting a course on the campus because he was familiar with the

location and knew it would be a popular feature for the students.

“I had often drove past FHTC and visualized a disc golf course on the campus,” McCabe said “I’ve always thought it would be fun to play out there. Now that has become a reality.”

As the only 9-hole course in Emporia, it allows a quick and enjoyable round of disc golf suitable for all skill levels.

“In comparison to the Emporia High Middle School course, there are a few more holes with elevation,” McCabe said. “There is a little more length on some of the holes and some baskets sit on the edge just to add a little more flare to the course. The basket placement on holes 3 and 7 are fantastic.”

Dynamic Discs donated the baskets and the course design and the project was installed by FHTC’s maintenance crew.

Since its installation during the summer, the course has received a warm reception. FHTC students are often using the course during breaks

as well as after classes. Community players are playing the course as well.

“Having the course on the college campus has been a great way to introduce people to the sport,” McCabe said.

“This is yet another opportunity to create partnerships with the community and activities for our students. It’s really a win-win situation.” Hollenbeck said. n

WANT TO BUILD A DISC GOLF COURSE? Learn about these friends’ challenges to bring Eagle Disc Golf Course to life

T

he 18-hole course winds around Olpe Lake and combines challenging obstacles, narrow fairways and many shots over the water. But people say it is not the hazards that will get players — it’s the wind.

The course was the creation of Charles Harper, Mike Smith, Ron Ziglar, Adrian Aleman, JD Chanley and a large team of volunteers.

Smith lives in Olpe and has been a disc golfer for more than 20 years. He and his friends spent years discussing and dreaming of putting a championship course those in neighboring Emporia in Olpe. Then, one day the men got to work. Thousands of manhours and thousands of dollars in donations later, the course is now a reality.

Spencer Stone: What originally pushed the idea of putting in a course at the Olpe Lake location?

Michael Smith: Originally there were four of us who played disc golf all the time together — myself, Charles Harper, Ron Ziglar, and Adrian Aleman — and in 2014 we thought it would be 20 DYNAMICDISCS.COM

fun to have our own course. The [Olpe] lake was a big area, but the backside was impossible to access. We’d joked about it a few times, and eventually, my brother, Charles, approached the city council about the possibility of putting in a course at the lake. They were for it almost immediately, but needed more from us to make a decision. They wanted us to take some time to scout out the land to see what it would take. It took us about a month to gather as much raw information as we could.

My brother took the initiative of what started as a running joke to the first step in making our own course happen.

SS: Were there any issues that came up during the design phase? Or getting ideas to fit the land?

MS: Like I said, that backside of the lake was a mess. From hole 7 to 15, we couldn’t access with all the overgrown brush, thorn bushes and trees.

We had to take machetes out to just find areas to walk through. My original idea, which was shot down, was to put in two 9-hole courses spread apart over the accessible areas and where the city does upkeep. We ended up moving past that idea into a full 18 and found between what is now holes 12 - 15 a fence that went all the way into the lake.

Our first plan was to put new dirt in between the two areas. We were looking at 300 feet of dirt as a pathway to get around that fence. We brought all our information to another council meeting and told them the ideas. They took some time to talk with the State Wildlife Department, and then the National Geological Survey crew.

The property was checked, and we found out that the fence causing us so much headache was on city land. Talks with the local farmer opened up the entire backside of the lake for us. It was

overgrown and beat down from cattle grazing, so trying to flag-mark tee pads and baskets was impossible until I brought my tractor down with a brush hog. We took turns clearing the area, which opened up options, and placements began to change immediately. The backside of the lake was the biggest issue we had to deal with. Hundreds of trips with my 20-foot trailer full of debris let us see the course for the first time.

SS: Could you describe some of the unique holes out there? Why were they chosen?

MS: Initially our unique holes were about the look. I’ve only ever seen one other hanging basket anywhere else, and I want to say it was at Blue Ridge up in Kansas City. I remember » Chasin’ the Chains 21

thinking how cool that basket placement was, and thought, ‘why can’t we have one?’

Hole 2 was originally in the ground, but after the city helped us clean the former dump site, we found that massive tree would be perfect for the idea of hanging a basket in the air.

On hole 7, we obviously could’ve cleared out all the trees, but we thought about how few holes around here give options for either hyzer or anhyzer shots to the same fairway location. Not to mention that it’s the only hole I can think of within the area with 50 - 60 trees in the middle of the fairway.

Hole 12 had a lot of mixed reviews after last year’s GBO because it was so difficult. Two big throws followed by an accuracy shot seemed like a cool idea — at least we thought. That island has proven to be just too small of a target to hit consistently.

Hole 18 was just happenstance for us. What 22 DYNAMICDISCS.COM

better way to finish a round than with a 350-plusfoot shot across the lake the course is featured around?

SS: Once construction began, what were some of the biggest obstacles you guys faced?

MS: When we did all the scouting for the council, the lake was drained. It was receded about 50 feet or so to make room for the installation of the piers out there now. For every tee pad and basket placement, we were estimating where the water levels would be when the lake was full.

There was a ton of guess work. Several calls to the Wildlife Department and their biologists to get an idea where crest lines would be and potential flood areas were our only options.

(Hole) 12 is a perfect example of that trial and error. All the numbers we had said that we built it up high enough, but obviously, it got washed out completely last year.

Hole 13 got buried by all the pasture runoff that couldn’t accurately be accounted for. My wonderful team of Charles Harper, Ron Ziglar and myself along with many, many off-and-on volunteers spent a countless number of man-hours with the ground work involved, making these holes work for future events.

SS: So what hole is your personal favorite? Why? MS: I have to say hole 2. It’s the elevation change, the look, the basket daring you to run at it for an ace. Everything about hole 2 is great, even when I recall the development of it from a design standpoint.

SS: Was it difficult obtaining sponsors, and hole sponsors?

MS: It wasn’t so much hard; it was just a lot of research in developing a sponsorship package that took some time. I got together pages of disc golf history, how fast it’s growing, PDGA membership and registration numbers, and just broke it down for them. After that came the money pages — breaking down the costs of everything from lumber, nails, baskets, rock, soil to the equipment needed to move forward. Sutherlands sponsored bridges with lumber and nails and John Deere was invaluable for any big equipment that none of us had. I mean, I even used a CAD system for images as well as dimensions for both the city and state to approve certain safety aspects of the course. Being as specific as possible helped us, in the long run, to get as many sponsors as we did.

SS: What all is entailed with course upkeep now that it’s all set up and functional?

MS: As of now, we have a verbal agreement with the city of Olpe. They currently take care of holes 1 - 6 and 16 - 18 with mowing, and general »

lake upkeep. From the green of hole 6 to 15 is all volunteer. We’ve had people out here push-mowing at times to try and keep the backside growth under control, and until a sponsor paid for a 100-inch deck finish mower for my tractor, it was very tedious to say the least.

SS: How has the feedback been from disc golfers, lakegoers and locals?

MS: During the scouting and construction processes, we had lake-goers out walking to the holes we were working on. I think it’s important to remember that the backside of the lake used to be completely impassable. As a matter of fact, we met some sponsors from them wanting access to the entire lake area. Our course would give them that, so they were on board on principle alone.

There are people from town who just drive out to the lake to walk our course and see all the work put into making the lake a better destination. As for disc golfers, there’s been mixed feedback. We’ve heard things from ‘4.5-out-of-5 difficulty and it makes me a better player’ all the way down to ‘I’ll never play it again. it was too hard.’

From a recreational/intermediate player, I expected those kinds of reactions. I get it. I had a hand in making the course, and there are times I finish plus-3 and some rounds plus-23 out there.

SS: Well, of course. I mean, I was born in Emporia, and grew up here being spoiled by the courses that are within the city limits my whole life. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I’ve mastered the courses in town, but from a local standpoint, some of the courses can get repetitive because I’ve thrown an Enforcer here for three years and it’s worked, so I’ll throw an Enforcer again. When I played Olpe, it made me feel like I’ve never played before and forced me to figure out what to throw and where.

Athletes need that kind of mental stimulation, whether they admit to it or not.

MS: Exactly. Our course teaches you something about your game. You have to be willing to adjust for wind changes on every hole, and it can humble you within only a few throws. The more I pay attention to disc golf, I ask myself, ‘How many courses actually challenge top pros?; I mean, I’m not surprised you see guys throwing rounds at minus-14 or even lower at some events. That kind of mindset is what led to the difficulty level you find out at our course, and why we’ve had our share of negative feedback. I’d love to see the scores after a round with top pros playing out on our course.

SS: The course can definitely be unforgiving at times.

Do you have any advice for disc golfers playing the Eagle Disc Golf course for the first time?

MS: Yeah. Bring stable discs with you even if you don’t regularly throw them. Bring spares, and discs you can afford to lose. I try to get in and fish for plastic as often as I can, and even pulled out over 150 after last year’s GBO. What players like to forget is that hazards are part of the game, and you can’t find every disc every time you send one into the water.

SS: Are there any new additions or improvements to look forward to in 2017 and beyond?

MS: Eric [McCabe], Doug [Bjerkaas] and I went over some new tee pad areas for rec and intermediate players on some holes. Some basket changes have already been implemented, but a total of four holes will have new settings. Make sure to go check them out. For future tournaments, OB line shifts have been discussed, but those are always hard because we simply can’t please everyone.

There are plans for a sweet billboard to be put in by hole 1 as a marquee to the course. Hopefully, we can eventually use that idea to bring in ways to collect donations for the gas required to keep the course neat all year round.

SS: Well Michael, I like the course. It may be hard, but traditionally athletes enjoy a challenge. Any closing statements you’ve got for readers or anyone ‘on the fence’ about putting in a disc golf course in their area?

MS: Well thank you. It’s good to hear that, no matter from who or where it comes from. For starters, I want to give recognition to my disc golf team, Shooting 4 Chains.

They, along with the design team of Charles Harper, Ron Ziglar, J.D. Chanley and Adrian Aleman, helped make this project possible from day one and helped make the dream come true. This course was put in for a fraction of the cost other courses usually require. I heard of a golf course being put in around El Dorado that cost something like $68,000-plus, where we spent somewhere in the $15 20,000 mark. We were all-in with volunteer work though, and a lot of what you see when you play was done by individuals without payment. Volunteer work, donations and countless hours of labor are what made the course possible. The more people we see out there, the happier it makes all of us who were able to make it a reality. n

Can the COLOR of Discs Make A FLIGHT

DIFFERENCE?

Jeremy Rusco answers readers’ questions

1 Do you think the color of discs can make a difference in flight or distance?

Interesting question and something that I have always wanted to understand. There are arguments, either way, it seems on this topic, and I wish that the answer was simply, NO. The more that I have been involved, and the more that I have learned along the way, prove differently.

The truth to it is, color can make a difference in the flight characteristics of a disc because the color pigment can affect the way that the plastic shapes up in the cooling process. Certain colors may, in fact, 26 DYNAMICDISCS.COM

behave differently than others when the disc is cooling, and that will slightly affect the shape of the disc. This minimal change will make a disc fly differently, and that is why you hear players talk about certain colors being more or less stable than others.

While we try to do everything that we can to produce a consistent disc, the reality of the disc-making process is that it will never be done with 100 percent consistency regarding flight characteristics unless the decision is made to not add any color to the disc (and no disc golfer wants that).

At the end of the day, our discs are very consistent and produced in an amazing production facility that focuses on being the highest quality in the disc golf industry. Most discs will fly the same or very close to the same regardless of color, but there are times when the color will change the flight characteristics slightly. Higher-speed drivers that feature a very wide rim are affected the most, but these changes are typically so minimal that most players will never know the difference.

2 How did you decide to name your discs after the legal system and who gets to name them? Who has named the most discs?

We don’t necessarily have a specific committee that is assigned to naming the discs, but there are certainly a few individuals and decision-makers who have always been a part of the disc-naming process. Clay Houser, Adam Searle, Eric McCabe

and myself have been involved in every disc-naming decision. There have certainly been others but these three have been around for a LONG time at Dynamic Discs and are always involved in the naming process.

As we moved into manufacturing in September of 2012, it consisted of some major decisions in regards to the naming of not only the plastic types we use, but also the disc names. Many ideas were thrown around, most of which I don’t even recall.

Then one day, one of my best disc golf friends

and DD supporters sent out a newsletter from his new wine company, Wheat State Wine Co, and the name of his newest wine was Trespass. It all clicked right then, and I knew that Trespass needed to be the name of one of our first four discs. We had plenty of other names on the drawing board that seemed to fit this theme.

Escape, Fugitive and Judge all fit the theme, and there were plenty more to go along with it.

discussion board to last a few years. Four years later and we haven’t run out of names, but the list is certainly getting shorter.

4 How long does it take from first thinking of a disc to selling the first one and what are some of the steps?

Wow, this is a great question and one that won’t be easy to summarize, but I’ll do my best.

The short answer is that it takes six to nine months for us to take the initial ideas for the new discs and get them released into the disc golf market, so it is no quick task for us to introduce something new.

Each year we release four to six discs and plan to continue to release three to four for the next several years.

Below is an overview of how our disc design process works: The first part of the process is listening to our customers and our team players to find out what they want.

From the feedback and requests of our team and our customer, we determine what we need to release for the upcoming year. In Q3 of 2016, we decided what we needed to release in 2017 to improve our lineup with more diversity.

We needed an overstable putter (Slammer), an understable putter (Deputy), an overstable fairway driver (Criminal) and a stable high-speed driver (Sheriff).

We communicate this with Tomas Ekstrom over at Latitude 64 and provide him with as much detail as possible, which includes flight characteristics, rim width, shape, etc. Tomas then takes this information and does his own thing. A couple of weeks pass, and then we are provided with a 3D virtual rendering of the shape and profile of the

disc and Tomas’ best understanding of how the disc will fly and how it will perform.

We review and approve what Tomas has sent over for our review and request to move forward with making the molds. Tomas sends this over to the mold maker, and the mold typically takes around four weeks to get back. Once that happens, there is a prototype run of discs made and sent to us to test and approve. We have Eric McCabe and plenty others around which is certainly a huge benefit as we can test all skill levels quickly. There have only been a few molds that haven’t received approval on the first prototype run of discs.

We send our approval, and then it just comes down to when we want to release the product. To help provide even more perspective, I’m going to put the timeline of the Criminal in front of us.

July-August 2016: Dynamic Discs communicates with Tomas Ekstrom at Latitude 64 about the flight characteristics, shape and feel of the 2017 Criminal overstable fairway driver.

September 2016: 3D virtual renderings sent to Dynamic Discs from Tomas for approval (approved instantly).

October 2016: Initial prototype testing

happened during my trip to Sweden, but these discs were then brought back for McCabe and others to test. Approval from McCabe was given instantly after test throwing at the Dynamic Distribution “proving grounds.”

November 2016: Dynamic Discs determined when we would be releasing all 2017 molds so that production planning could happen. The decision was made to have the Criminal be an April 2017 Glass Blown Open release, so this allowed for some additional time for production to begin.

February 2017: Criminal production began and placed on a container for ocean shipment.

Each container sent takes approximately five to six weeks to land in Emporia, Kansas.

March 2017: Small shipment sent by air for the Dynamic Discs team members and Special Edition release for the Dynamic Discs buyback retailer partners.

April 2017: The container lands it usually takes us about a week to get everything organized in the warehouse and implemented in our systems. The wholesale newsletter goes out and is sent to our customer base with orders happening right away. » Chasin’ the Chains 29

5 What has been your proudest accomplishment?

I’m not exactly sure how to answer this one as I’m a pretty humble person and just like to take care of business.

The entire Dynamic Discs story is somewhat of “The American Dream.” I guess you could say that Dynamic Discs was created out of almost nothing (an $800 investment back in March of 2005). I had no dreams or ambitions for my college-based eBay hobby to become more than just a hobby. More importantly than that, the realization that my first employees and friends who were hired are still working at Dynamic Discs today and are my most trusted and most valuable assets to the business.

It is amazing to think that so many lives have been impacted by being employed at Dynamic Discs and the fact that real jobs and careers have been created for so many along the way. I take a lot of pride in the fact that our employees are loyal and passionate about what they do. We have hired and kept 18 Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College graduates and relocated nine different families from out of state to work at Dynamic Discs amongst the 45 different employees in Emporia alone. Those kind of numbers are impressive to me and something that I would have never imagined.

I’m thankful to have hired and relocated my brother and family to Emporia in October of 2014. I am also thankful to have my parents as a new part of the Emporia community so that my entire family can be together all because of the opportunities that the business has provided. We love Emporia and look forward to being a part of the community for a very long time.

On an Emporia standpoint, the 2016 season was a tremendous success. The Glass Blown Open was the largest event in the history of disc golf with 1,120 competitors, and the Professional World Championships were the best in the history of the event regarding operation, activities and payout.

We have a lot to be proud of in Emporia in regards to disc golf, and we hope only to continue to grow Emporia as the disc golf capital of the world!

6 Starlin, your English Bulldog, has 51 fewer followers on Instagram than you have. Are you worried that Starlin will achieve more followers than you this year?

Haha! This is funny! @StarlinTheBulldog will probably have more followers on Instagram by the time this goes to print. Starlin is also significantly more involved, or social, than I am on Instagram and is certainly better looking. :) I guess you could say that I’m not all that worried about Starlin making more friends on Instagram as I can’t keep up with all the things happening on social media.

I love taking Starlin out to the disc golf course, and she makes friends with everyone that she comes across. Her visits to the Dynamic Discs retail store and warehouse bring joy to everyone as she quickly becomes the center of attention. Starlin hopes to meet and say hi to everyone in attendance at the Glass Blown Open and will be excited to shake hands and wish you good luck! n

Oswalt’s day job is being a graphic designer for a large international company in Kansas City, but in his free time he creates disc designs and posters for tournaments across the country.

Oswalt’s tournament designs have many saying his Kansas City series are some of the best designs to ever appear on discs.

“Designing for disc golf is so much fun,” Oswalt said. “There are a lot of good graphic artists designing discs today. It makes me strive to put my best work out there. I want to set the bar higher with each design.”

He took up disc golf seven years ago and, after playing in tournaments and getting to know some tournament organizers, they started asking him to do designs for tournaments.

Oswalt does designs for both hot stamp and DyeMax. The Kansas City stamp collection receiving so much attention used the Dynamic Discs DyeMax Technology.

“I would like to do more DyeMax but just haven’t had a lot of opportunity to,” he said. “I really like the full use of color that is available with DyeMax and it really expands the design options.”

As the sport grows, Oswalt looks forward to doing a lot more designs for the industry.

“It’s exciting to see disc golf grow each year and am thankful I can contribute in some capacity,” Scott said. n

I would say to go out and find a park and seclude yourself for an hour or so and just learn your discs. We get caught up in what’s new and hot and start to trail off into discs we are unsure of. Stick with what you know and work on repetition so you learn said disc with 100 percent confidence. When you get to this point, you will still mess up, but at least you will know why and how to fix it!

I would have to say, without a doubt, it was winning my first World Championship. I can remember the events like it was yesterday. I was 19 at the time and had not proven myself quite yet. It was in Santa Cruz, California, which was the home of the 4-time World Champ Val Jenkins and she was obviously the one to beat. I felt confident in my skills, but I had yet to have to execute them in such a high-pressure setting before. It was a true test. When the week was over, I came out victorious and could not have felt more ecstatic with the outcome. It gave me the confidence to believe I can compete against the best, even in a setting where all odds are against me. Anytime I am feeling a bit down and out, I try to replay the events of that week for a little reassurance.

The Convict is a great complement to the Felon with the same feel in the hand but with less stability. The Convict is perfect for those times when you need a straight disc for most of the shot but have to have some stability at the end of the flight. The Convict can also hold the anhyzer you give it before coming back to flat. This disc allows for you to shape your shots to avoid all of the obstacles that are trying to increase your scores.

I really enjoy Hole 10 at Jones East. It is an open, elevated tee pad and the basket is tucked into a tree tunnel. I throw my Paige Pierce Lucid Convict at the left side of the trees and let it flip into the gap and then Hyzer back towards the basket. I even got an ace on this hole during the PDGA Professional Worlds Mixed Doubles in 2016!

AVIATOR takes Flight ast year, Dynamic Discs gave flight to the Aviator. While this new item is not for the disc golf industry — Dynamic Discs does hope disc golfers will want to have one.

The Aviator is Dynamic Discs answer to making an improved disc for the sport of ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee has been around since the late 1960s and combines aspects of flag football and playing catch with friends.

Dynamic Discs set out to make the Aviator more stable than the other Frisbees on the market.

One of the largest knocks on other ultimate Frisbees is that they simply don’t hold a decent line when ripping them downfield during a match. Wind and power throws can compromise ideal flights.

The Aviator was designed to ensure a consistent flight, even in adverse conditions. The next step was durability. This feature can go hand-in-hand with stability the older the disc gets, because time is the enemy of all throwing plastic.

A higher-grade plastic was purposely chosen to last longer than all other discs available. Add this to a slight reinforcement on the disc’s rim and you get an ultimate Frisbee that retains its ‘fresh out of the box’ flight line for a longer period of time.

The Aviator has a slightly deeper rim and will glide further. That depth also provides more room for error when catching the Frisbee — aesthetically speaking.

So why should disc golfers care about the Aviator? To have fun of course.

ynamic Discs and the Sweet Granada, a gourmet chocolate store located in Emporia, Kansas, teamed up to create a disc golf disc that is truly unique: a disc made entirely of chocolate.

Instead of being thrown, its primary purpose is to be eaten and enjoyed.

Kim Redeker, owner of the Sweet Granada, said the response has been amazing to this exact three-dimensional replica.

“It’s fun to see people’s reactions when they hold it in their hands because it’s so similar to a real Dynamic Discs Truth,” Redeker said.

Currently, the chocolate discs are available only in Dynamic Discs’ Truth mold and come in either milk chocolate or dark chocolate, with the milk chocolate being the biggest seller. Eighty percent of people choose the milk chocolate while 20 percent choose the dark chocolate.

Redeker said creating the three-dimensional disc was a challenging and daunting process.

“We had to have a custom mold created and they used an engineering CAD system to get the exact disc dimensions,” Redeker said. “After we got the mold back, then it was four weeks of trial-and-error making them and remaking them, but we finally got it figured out. It finally took paint sticks and we had to create our own clamping system to get it to work.”

Redeker is pleased they are being received so well.

“It was a commitment in time and money, but it has been worth it,” Redeker said. “They have sold fantastic this year.”

This Year’s

Glass Blown Ale Big Surprise BRINGS A

t’s obvious when things just go together.

Like peanut butter and jelly or Bonnie and Clyde, disc golf and beer are a natural pairing. There’s nothing quite like enjoying a cold and refreshing beer after a long round of birdies and ace runs. When it comes to tournament time, visiting a brewery can be a great way to unwind after a strenuous round.

In years past, local Emporia brewery Radius Brewing has created a batch of ale specifically for patrons of the Glass Blown Open and it’s sold out in no time.

For 2017, Radius decided to take on a partner to make their special drink even better - the couple behind Bevel Craft Brewing, disc golf’s own Nate Doss and Valarie Jenkins, have teamed up with Radius to bring their own take on the Glass Blown Ale for this year’s GBO.

First, A Little History Lesson For those of you in the know, it should come as no surprise that Doss and Jenkins have been perfecting their brewing craft for some time now. If this information comes as news, let’s briefly review how two of the top disc golfers in the world got involved in creating craft beer, and where they plan to take their passion.

Back in 2012, both Nate and

Val visited the Midwest to take a brewery tour at Boulevard Brewing. This brief jaunt to Kansas City sparked a new interest for Nate, and he has since been studying and perfecting the art of homebrewing. Just like his mission to always improve on the disc golf course, Doss was committed to making each batch of beer better and better. Playing as touring professionals was still a priority for both of them, yet Nate and Val completely fell in love with this new hobby.

They talked about their hopes and dreams for someday opening a brewery and eventually made the decision to move forward with their passion. They founded Bevel Craft Brewing and launched their first branded brew on St. Patrick’s Day 2016.

Why the name Bevel? Given that disc golf has been such an integral part of their lives, the couple wanted to link the sport with their company without it being overpowering. Describing the beveled-edge of a disc as revolutionizing disc golf, they hope to transform the IPA market with their own unique creations.

Prior to officially founding their company, they worked in partnership with brewers at Fiddlehead Brewing Company in Vermont. Nate had a great time there working with Matt Cohen, brewmaster and passionate disc golfer, to create a signature beer that debuted at the 2015 Green Mountain Championship. It received rave reviews, and their work on the Glass Blown Ale brings their collaboration count up to five. » Chasin’ the Chains 41

Their plans for the future?

“We have set a goal to eventually do a collaboration in all 50 states,” Val said. “And while that might seem like a large feat, disc golfers are everywhere!

We know we can make it happen.”

In order to help fund their trips to Emporia to work on their GBO brew, as well as to continue to raise capital for a brick and mortar brewery in their hometown of Bend, Oregon, Nate and Val have been selling a limited run of discs titled the “2017 Bevel Collaboration Series.” It’s this blend

of support from disc golfers and their talent for homebrewing that have propelled them thus far.

Val nods to the similarities between the disc golf community and those who love craft beer.

How Is Radius Brewing Involved In The Mix? As Emporia’s only craft brewery, Radius opened its doors in April 2014, with a vision to keep the business as local as possible. One of their founders, who goes by JJ, explains their goal, saying, “The name Radius came from the idea that we wanted to keep our focus on a short radius around Emporia. We make every effort to source ingredients from our community as well as give back to it as much as possible.”

The trio of owners at Radius have made it their mission to create a memorable experience when you enter their doors. Not only do they brew exceptional craft beer in-house, it’s literally made in the middle of the dining room. As the town’s first brewery since prohibition, Radius offers an impressive menu of beers and food alike, with gastronomical creations prepared right before your eyes. If you thought Emporia was a destination location for disc golf, you’ll soon see that Radius is a destination for exceptional food and drinks.

Seeing the natural connection between their product and the disc golf community they were a part of, it was only a matter of time before a partnership came about between Radius and Dynamic Discs. “The GBO, and disc golf in general, are part of what makes Emporia really unique,” JJ said. “With us being a brewery in Emporia, and beer and disc golf going together so well, it made a lot of sense for us to brew a beer to commemorate our town’s biggest annual disc golf event.”

successful at tournament time, and they can expect an awesome creation from them every year. In fact, the demand for their Glass Blown Ale has been so large in past years that JJ had to change the gameplan for 2017. Their brew system typically only creates six kegs at a time, meaning that during previous tournaments, only one batch of the Glass Blown Ale has been made.

“Last year it sold out in about 16 business hours.” JJ said. “This year the plan is to brew four batches. Two batches will be bottled and sold to-go at Radius, and the other two will be available for draft-only, on-site consumption.”

A Perfect Pairing With two awesome brewers in the disc golf circle, it didn’t take long before the idea to collaborate on a GBO brew was born. Doss and Jenkins have been fans of Radius from the beginning.

“We have been coming to Emporia for the GBO since 2009, but we can distinctly remember how excited we were to see that this little town opened their own craft brewery, Since then, Radius has been our go-to stop in Emporia for great beer, delicious food and [is] the overall place to be.”

The pair officially met JJ during 2016 Pro Worlds, and they immediately hit it off. Nate

mentioned to JJ that he would love to do a collaboration, and the rest might as well be history.

“We discussed the idea briefly then, and I’ve been looking forward to doing it ever since,” JJ said.

“The process of designing the beer has been a lot of fun.”

It takes explicit communication when brewing beer with someone long-distance, and while Nate and Val have made trips to Emporia to work on the batch, they had to rely on teamwork to get the job done right.

Given that the Glass Blown Open is the leading event for Dynamic Discs’ yearly schedule, they wanted to do as much as possible to assist in the collaboration. DD Event Coordinator Doug Bjerkaas noted the beauty behind the match.

“We have always looked for ways to promote local businesses during the Glass Blown Open,” he said. “Radius felt that the GBO was big enough for them to do something special for the event. It has now become a tradition as Radius has become synonymous with the GBO.” This year’s Glass Blown Ale officially debuted at Emporia’s brewfest held downtown just two nights ago.

kinds of IPAs. When they talked with JJ about what kind of beer they’d like to make, the idea came about to make a version of a farmhouse ale. Val describes it as: “A ‘Hoppy Saison,’ a farmhousestyle beer with a fresh hoppy aroma but light on the bitterness. It’ll be the perfect refreshing after round beer.”

Swedish tradition celebrates new disc golf season and friendships

ost people on the disc golf circuit probably don’t know what Walpurgis Eve celebration is.

The three Glass Blown Open disc golfers from Sweden, however, probably do — and they are likely looking forward to it.

The other 1,101 Glass Blown Open participants probably need a little more information, but since most disc golfers enjoy a good celebration — this is one multi-cultural event at which they’ll want to be.

Glass Blown Open players were first introduced to the Swedish Walpurgis Eve celebration in 2015, and this year the event will return from 7 - 11 p.m. April 28 at the Dynamic Discs Distribution Center at at 3601 W. Sixth Ave. Valborg, as it’s known in Swedish, is a celebration of the return of the sun and summer after a long, cold winter. Bonfires are lit at the setting of the sun, and those in attendance gather around the warm 60 DYNAMICDISCS.COM

Kansas is also known for long, cold winters — and with the Glass Blown Open being in April, in many ways it also symbolizes warmer days coming. It’s a celebration of being able to play more disc golf and the new disc golf tournament season.

Walpurgis Eve origins date back to the Middle Ages (roughly the 5th-15th century), and is when the administrative year ended on April 30. The celebrations were usually held with all members of a community in attendance. Merchants, craftsmen, farmers and peasants all came as a town or village meeting was held with eggs and schnapps served as refreshments.

These meetings signified the selection of a new alderman (mayor) for each town. The gatherings also meant the local livestock were being released to field to graze, but

it wasn’t until the 1700s that the bonfire was implemented as a way to stave off predatory animals.

These native predators were a much larger problem for our ancestors, and the bonfire was only one option to keep the predators at bay.

Merrymaking, music, cowbells and just being jovial humans celebrating around the bonfires also helped.

Walpurgis celebrations are not family get-togethers, but instead are typically organized by large groups to reinforce a “sense of community spirit” within the neighborhood.

After the bonfire has burned out, many in attendance move to pubs or houses to keep the celebration going all through the night. It is important to note that forms of this celebration can vary in different parts of Sweden, and even between different cities. Bonfires, strong drink and singing are largely recognized throughout each area.

We hope that if you are currently attending the 2017 Glass Blown Open, you are having a great time. If you have already attended and are reading this magazine after the fact, we hope you did have a great time.

If you were unable to participate in the 2017 Glass Blown Open, we hope you are planning to get to Emporia soon to experience a great Dynamic Discs event for yourself!

Sixteen months ago I started a new chapter of my disc golf journey.

Little did I know that it would turn into one of the most exciting and busiest years of my life. In late 2015, Jeremy Rusco asked if I would come to Emporia and spearhead the disc golf tournaments that Dynamic Discs was hosting. I accepted the event coordinator position with DD and started in January 2016.

With the tremendous support of the DD staff, the city of Emporia, the Emporia Country Club, Emporia State University, the city of Olpe, scores of local businesses, several sponsors from around the globe and an incredible community of disc golfers, we were able to pull off two of the most incredible national disc golf events I have ever been a part of.

Last April, the Glass Blown Open proved to be the largest singlelocation tournament ever and was received tremendously well by the participants (even with the weather being awful). Four short months later, the 2016 PDGA Professional World Championship was held in Emporia.

Looking back at the footage and photography from this event still gives me goosebumps. Awarding checks to Ricky Wysocki for $10,000 and to Valarie Jenkins for $5,000 for their MPO and FPO wins at the 2016 Pro Worlds still inspires me.

2017 brings us another GBO and a new stadium event in Nashville, Tennessee. We will continue to push to run better and more successful events. The PDGA recently awarded DD and the city of Emporia the 2018, 2019 and 2020 Junior World Disc Golf Championships.

Planning and delivering these great national events will be a challenge, but the rewards of growing the sport and seeing kids play competitive disc golf at the highest level will make every minute of work worth it!

Dynamic Discs is committed to growing our sport one disc golfer at a time. We hope you will come take part in our events all across the country as well as pass a disc along to someone who is new to the sport.
