Emilio is a fantastic example of resilience and determination; he joined our organisation just before the Coronavirus pandemic, with only three weeks in the sales field. He managed to promote himself to leadership but then the world came to a halt. Working part-time in a supermarket covering night shifts, he continued to pursue his training online with the team whenever he could, ensuring he was as prepared as possible when the time came.

Matt Nicholson spoke highly of all three individuals, commenting on how they’ve made a concerted effort to become part of the team, going the extra mile to get to know people and learn from those around them. The people I was working with at the time were just living for the weekend; they made their money and went home. There was no sense of wanting to be there. When I met Phil, I could see he really cared about what he was doing and took it seriously. There was a genuine passion for the company and what they were achieving for their clients. I wanted to feel like that about my work too.

When I was growing up I was bullied a lot, so, if I’m honest, I’ve always seen confident people as threats. I was on edge around people if I didn’t know them. Even on my very first day with The Promotions Company my adrenaline was pumping; these people seemed to have their lives together and I felt like an imposter quite frankly. But I didn’t want to be. To come into a place where the team is actually doing something with their lives and for good causes, I wanted to have more meaning to mine and be a part of that.

What skills did you learn right away?

When I joined I was only with the team for a little while before I went travelling, but I managed to learn so much even in that 013

I practised, practised and practised, and it’s because of that I became somebody that I feel deserves to be in the position I’m in now. Yes and no. Although I wasn’t confident, I knew I was capable. I’m not more capable than anyone else, but I have been consistent with how I wanted to learn, and I continually try to improve.

What skill set are you currently focusing on?

Managing others. Training is different to leading, and leading is different again from managing. I think I’m quite a good coach where skill development is concerned, now what I’d like to improve on is motivating and inspiring others to achieve their potential.

The industry has offered so much to me in the way of personal and professional development, I’d like to now pass that on effectively to the people on my team. Or anyone for that matter!

Have you found you’ve changed your habits at all?

I was a nightmare when I started, I wasn’t particularly

I’m a lot more comfortable in my own skin now too. Previously, I worked in salons where I always felt a bit ‘too much’ for people. This is the first industry I’ve worked in where I can be myself; I’m loud, everyone’s best mate and it’s most welcome. I feel more authentically me and I think that’s why I’m doing quite well.

What motivates you to stay consistent?

It sounds so annoying, but I hate the idea of being average. Mediocracy just isn’t what I’m aiming for. The bulletins go out every week and the thought of everyone thinking “Oh, that’s just Sophie” keeps me motivated. I want them to think I’m great at what I do!

Each day is different, but that’s good as you’re learning with the variety; the objections, the challenges, the different scenarios, the technical issues etc.
