Celebrating a Bold New Course

Emory University kicked off its visionary 2O36 campaign amidst Homecoming and Reunion Weekend revelry.

The Emory Quad took on something of a futuristic look in late October, with five geodesic domes and a grand stage erected to tell the stories behind the university’s new 2O36 campaign and usher in a busy Homecoming weekend.

At the launch event open to the entire Emory community on Friday, October 22, President Gregory L. Fenves encouraged everyone—students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends—to think about their role in shaping the future of Emory, Atlanta, and the world. “The future starts now,” Fenves said. “The future starts with you.”

Named for Emory’s bicentennial, 2O36 is about investing in people for the benefit of people. In addition to supporting priorities across all nine of the university’s schools, multiple centers and institutes, and Emory Healthcare, Fenves introduced the three core areas where the campaign will place special emphasis. They are: 1. STUDENT FLOURISHING: Seeing students realize their potential, preparing them for a lifetime of accomplishment beyond graduation, providing an inclusive environment, valuing each student, and enabling them to excel in academics and all aspects of their lives. 2. FACULTY EMINENCE: Recruiting and retaining a diverse, top-tier faculty; investing in the faculty’s big ideas and scholarship; and creating a campus where all faculty have the resources and infrastructure to thrive in their research, teaching, and service. 3. RESEARCH EXCELLENCE: Launching the next era of Emory excellence in research and discovery to answer the most pressing questions and address the crucial needs of the nation and communities

Fenves announced the campaign’s goal of adding 154 endowed faculty members, doubling the current number in an underfunded area. He also emphasized the importance of reimagining and increasing student support by creating more scholarships, revamping career services, and doubling down on mental health and well-being.

Fenves concluded by saying, “With the partnership of our greatest supporters, student success becomes student flourishing; competing with the best becomes being the best; and having a research breakthrough becomes having the research breakthrough that changes an entire field. With the success of this campaign, in 2036 we will be a research university without equal in a class of our own.”

The campaign event helped kick-start Emory’s Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, which featured a full slate of concerts and events. Student-led activities throughout the week followed a “Swoop’s Streets” theme.

The fun for all continued on Saturday with the traditional Homecoming Parade around campus, as well as the Homecoming Festival and Concert on the Quad, featuring performances by Yacht Rock Schooner, Lennon Stella, and headlining act Black Pumas.

ALUMNI OF TOMORROW Students were invited to connect with Emory alumni during the 2O36 campaign and Homecoming and Reunion Weekend events that ranged across the university’s campuses, mixing learning with fun.

“As a first-generation immigrant, my life was forever changed by the opportunity to attend Emory University. 2O36 is about passing that opportunity forward—allowing students with backgrounds like mine to experience the transformative power of Emory. This bold and ambitious vision for the university’s future isn’t just about making Emory a better place, but making the world a better place. I chose to make a planned gift because it’s my way of making good on that future, embarking on a long-lasting commitment, and ensuring the best and boldest students have access to an unparalleled education.”
