S

ummer has been anything but quiet down in the ONR, with proposals going out the door and awards coming right back in! Please take a few minutes to read about these diverse and exciting new awards – and our wonderful faculty who received them. I know our entire school is proud of their efforts and their success. What is especially fun to see is the range of awards, from two spectacular HRSA grants (Amar, Clevenger) to support our students to two awards for investigating epigenetic contributions to adverse cardiac (Butts) and maternal-fetal (Dunlop) outcomes. And in between, studies of cognitive behavioral therapy and insomnia (Routledge), smoking and RAGE in mice (Downs), and statistical modeling of dynamic changes in protein structure, which may sound confusing but is our

School’s first award to analyze big data (Paul).

Also, please welcome our School’s new postdoc, Dr. Irene Yang, joining us from the University of Louisville, and the ONR’s new post-award specialist, So Yung Wilson, joining us from the School of Medicine. We are very happy to have them both on board.

Welcome also to all of our new faculty. Please stop down to the ONR anytime, grab a cup of coffee, and chat about budding ideas you may have, or firm plans you have, for submitting proposals in the fall or spring. We thrive on talk and action in the ONR, and look forward to doing both!

Dynamic Statistical Modeling of Small Angle Scattering Images of Proteins aims to utilize the output images from this technology and implement a spatial and temporal method for analyzing dynamic image frames of protein molecules in solution. This will help estimate shape and structural characteristics of molecules and provide a crude method of identification.

J. So Yung Wilson has joined the Office of Nursing Research as our Post-Award Specialist where she will be responsible for all post award activities, including monthly expenditure reports, award setup, salary distribution and effort reporting.

So Yung comes to us highly recommended from the Department of Medicine Research Administrative Service (RAS) Unit where she did post award management. Previous to that she worked in sponsored programs (pre and post award) administration in the Department of Endocrinology and the Department of Anthropology

here at Emory. Prior to coming to Emory, So Yung worked at the University of North Carolina and at the Ohio State University. So Yung has a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Malone University.

Dr. Irene Yang PhD, received her PhD in 2014 from the University of Louisville.

Her experience as a maternal newborn nurse in Kentucky was the impetus for her interest in the health behaviors of low-income pregnant and postpartum women. Her dissertation examined factors influencing the relationship between socioeconomic status and prenatal smoking with

ur 2nd Annual Spring Fling was held on Friday, May 16, 2014. The Office of Nursing Research recognized the hard work and dedication of all the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing researchers who received new grant awards. We celebrated by giving out seasonal plants.

Awardees included: Dr. Charles Downs, Dr. Ken Hepburn, Dr. Ursla Kelly, Dr. Lisa Muirhead, Dr. Sudeshna Paul, and Dr. Julie Zuniga. Congratulations to all!

a focus on the role of psychosocial mediators or moderators of that relationship.

Dr. Yang began her postdoctoral work on the T32 training grant in July of this year under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Corwin. Her work at Emory will expand her current research focus to include other prenatal risk behaviors as well biological and physiological links between those behaviors and prenatal outcomes.

Her long term goal is to contribute to knowledge and interventions that will improve the health and well-being of socioeconomically vulnerable women and their newborns.
