New Research Awards Congratulations to the following researchers for their new awards: DEBORAH WATKINS BRUNER, PHD, RN, FAAN Dr. Deborah Watkins Bruner is the Roberts W. Woodruff Professor of Nursing. Dr. Bruner’s teaching focuses on quantitative research methods, randomized clinical trials, health disparities and the acute and late effects of cancer along with symptom management.

American College of Radiology (ACR) Grant, “Phase III Trial of Dose Escalated Radiation Therapy and Standard Androgen Deprivation Therapy with a GnRH Agonist vs. Dose Escalated Radiation Therapy and Enhanced ADT with a GnRH agonist and TAK-700 for Men with High Risk Prostate Cancer.” Dr. Bruner’s major roles in this study are to prepare the draft of study, develop data collection forms, and monitor progress of the study.

She will also identify problems with treatment delivery, toxicity, and data collection. Furthermore, she will monitor and participate in the preparation of a manuscript, reporting the final results of the study.

EDITH BRUTCHER, NP Ms. Brutcher is an Adult Nurse Practitioner specializing in Oncology. She has 25 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, and the past 7 years as an Adult Nurse Practitioner.

Ms. Brutcher's clinical specialties include GI and Aerodigestive cancers and she is a chemotherapy infusion specialist.

Daisy Foundation Grant, “Zinc Deficiency in GI Cancer Patients.” The purpose of this study is to see if patients with upper GI caner who are receiving chemotherapy are more likely to have zinc deficiencies.

ASHLEY DARCY, PHD, RD, NNP-BC Dr. Ashley E Darcy’s area of interest is in neonatology, infant health, developmental pediatrics and brain injury. Her research is focused on developmental outcomes of high-risk infants.

Florida Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners Grant, “Head Ultrasound Findings in Late Preterm infants.” The purpose of this study is to understand findings of infants born late preterm. This study will also advance the understanding of cogitative and behavioral risk that affects outcomes in the perinatal period and subsequent child development.

BRYAN WILLIAMS, PHD Dr. Bryan Williams’ research is focused primarily in the areas of perinatal, pediatrics, and environmental epidemiology and policy. His research also involves the examination of factors related to health and educational disparities among children.

Georgia Career Academic Grant, “State Level Analysis of College & Career Academy Outcomes.” The purpose of this contract is to conduct a statewide level analysis of College and Career Academy Outcomes.

ONR Welcomes JUANDALYN COFFEN Juandalyn Coffen is a data analyst working with the Office of Academic Advancement and the Center for Neurocognitive Studies (CNS). Juandalyn completed her Bachelor of Science (BS) degree at Spelman College in Environmental Science while working in several Analytical and Organic Chemistry labs throughout her undergraduate career. She obtained her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, which focused on the association between mother’s exposure to air pollution and low birth weight in Mexico City, Mexico. A native of Atlanta, GA, she loves everything about her city and state, and considers herself a real “Georgia Peach”.

She enjoys spending time with her family, meeting new people and learning new languages (related to both linguistics and computer programming, of course)! She can be reached via email at j.l.coffen@emory.edu.

JEFF MILLS We are pleased to announce that Jeff Mills has joined the School of Nursing, and the Office of Nursing Research, as a Research Administrative Assistant. He previously was a Support Specialist at Coca-Cola.

Jeff has hit the ground running and is quickly learning the Emory procedures and systems. We trust that he will be a strong asset to the support services provided by the Office of Nursing Research. Research Symposium Day

On April 16, 2013 the School of Nursing hosted the "2nd Annual Emory Nursing Research Symposium: Achieving Clinical Excellence through Research and Evidence Based Practice”. The event was attended by 204 students, clinical nurses and faculty representing organizations such as the School of Nursing, Emory Healthcare, the Atlanta VAMC, CHOA, and other regional schools and hospitals. Nationally recognized nurse researchers and clinical nursing leaders, Shirley M. Moore, PhD, RN, FAAN and Marianne Chulay, PhD, RN, FAAN, started the day off with the importance of full inclusion of persons with disabilities in research and clinician research teams for improving patient care.

Oral presentations (selected from a total of 52 abstract submissions) covered diverse and timely topics in areas such as pediatrics, symptom management, adolescent health, and evidence based practice. A stellar group of students and faculty also presented posters equally as various and important. An expert panel composed of Stuart Zola, PhD, Andrew Miller, MD, Deborah Watkins Bruner, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Nadia Ali, PhD, shared insights into cutting edge research approaches useful in studies on symptoms of cognitive and mood disturbance. The Office of Nursing Research, Center for Neurocognitive Studies, Sigma Theta Tau, and Emory Healthcare sponsored the event.

Spotlight on Postdoctoral Fellows Postdoctoral Fellows have a new home within the ONR team.

CHRISTINE FEELEY, PHD, RN Dr. Feeley received her PhD in 2012 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During that time, she also worked as a staff nurse at Children’s of Alabama on the pediatric pulmonary unit and developed an immense respect for the time and effort that goes into caring for a child with a chronic illness. Her dissertation work involved maternal caregivers of young children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and examined their sleep quality, stress, depressive symptoms, quality of life, and caregiver burden. Upon obtaining her PhD, she moved to Emory to begin post-doctoral work on the T32 training grant at Emory. Her mentor is Dr. Ann Rogers. Dr. Feeley’s research interest has shifted to caregivers of children with cystic fibrosis (CF), and has expanded to include both the caregiver and the child. She hopes to conduct a study involving both the parent and the child with CF to examine sleep, stress, and anxiety.

JESSICA WELLS, PHD, RN Dr. Wells is a postdoctoral fellow working under the mentorship of Dr. Deborah W. Bruner. Her research interests include health disparities, women’s health, oncology, and treatment adherence.

She received her PhD in nursing at Emory University where her dissertation examined decision making to chemotherapy adherence in women with early stage breast cancer. During her postdoctoral training, Dr. Wells is interested in

examining adherence to guideline recommendations for follow up after an abnormal Pap test in a sample of HIV and HPV positive women. Her research has been funded by NINR National Research Service Award, American Cancer Society, and Sigma Theta Tau. She is also a fellow of the 2012-2013 Public Voices Thought Leadership fellowship.

JENNIFER RUNKLE, PHD, MSPH Dr. Runkle is completing a postdoctoral fellowship focused on environmental and occupational health disparities in vulnerable agricultural populations. Her mentor is Dr. Linda McCauley. Dr. Runkle is an environmental epidemiologist with experience in community-based participatory research using a mixedmethods approach to address and ultimately eliminate health disparities. She completed her PhD in 2011 from the University of South Carolina. Her dissertation work examined the long-term impact of an environmental public health disaster on health system performance and access to care for medically vulnerable populations. She is committed to answering the tough questions community members struggle with upon discovering they have been exposed to an environmental contaminant. Dr. Runkle will continue to focus on the following research goals in her postdoc: (1) explore underlying biologic and social mechanisms driving environmental health disparities; (2) develop and implement action-based research and targeted interventions; and (3) address gaps in research on priority populations using participatory action research.

CANHUA XIAU, PHD, RN Dr. Xiao is completing a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Deborah W. Bruner, and her research in this fellowship focuses on cancer-related symptoms. Dr. Xiao obtained her PhD in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, and her dissertation work examined symptom clusters in patients with head and

neck cancer. During her postdoctoral training, Dr. Xiao continues to work on symptoms related to cancer and its treatment, specifically, the underlying molecular and genetic mechanisms of cancer-related fatigue. Her long-term goal will be relieving cancer patients’ symptoms and eventually improving their quality of life. Her research has been funded by University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, American Nursing Society Foundation, and the Oncology Nursing Society Foundation.
