Six artists break records at Christie’s
GAMG
Defying predictions, Christie’s 20th-century evening sale demonstrated a robust market for American abstraction and European masterpieces, with significant sales of Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, Pablo Picasso, and René Magritte. After its sporadic 21stcentury sale earlier this week, Christie’s brought in $640.8 million in its 20th-century evening auction—its highest result for a non-single owner sale since November 2017.

Art Market’s New Equilibrium
GAMG Newsletter
The Spring 2023 auctions saw mixed results with less competitive bidding and sale totals at Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips, down 18% year-over-year. We are now seeing collectors more focused on quality and curation, and less on speculation and trendiness, regardless of category. Demand for rare, A+ works within the Old Master, Impressionist, Modern and Post-War categories is formidable. While the overall art market was down yearover-year, watches and jewelry became the third largest auction category, growing by 21.4% just this season.
Emily Fisher Landau’s Prized Picasso
Vol.Two
Sotheby’s sold the most significant artwork by Picasso since 2010 for $140 Million. A favourite of Emily Fisher Landau from her personal collection this artwork is said to have more of an impact than any other of this ‘other woman’ works. The $140 Million hammer price is the second highest for Pablo Picasso. Marina Adams 12x9_101, 2016

Reparations at the Carlos In August, The Chronicle of Higher Education led an investigation that found hundreds of items in Emory University's Michael C. Carlos Museum to known antiquity traffickers. Following this investigation, the museum has ceded ownership of five pieces, repatriating some of them to Italy. These works include an ancient plate, a plate fragment, and three pieces of pottery.
Activists Attack
GAMG
On November 6th, two activists were arrested in London after attacking The Toilet of Venus by Diego Velázquez at the London National Gallery. The activists attacked the painting with emergency rescue hammers while sporting shirts with "Just Stop Oil" sprawled across the chest. After a few blows, they turned to address the crowd, calling for action to stop new oil and gas licensing. They likened their activism to the feminist movement in the early 1900s when the suffragette Mary Richardson attacked the same painting with a meat cleaver.

ART FAIRS Paris + Par Art Basel
In October, Paris + par Art Basel held a highly successful art fair in the Grand Palais Épémère. With a range of exhibitions from the solo exhibition of Lonnie Holley to the large-scale video installations by Lu Yang, Paris + showed 153 different artists and galleries. The fair aimed to draw on its French roots by incorporating the Parisian culture and location.
Pokémon x Van Gogh The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam recently opened a new exhibition: Pokémon x Van Gogh Museum. This exhibition aims to get children interested in the works of the 19th-century Dutch master. Although this may seem like an odd pairing, Japanese art played a large role in inspiring Van Gogh's work, and he even wrote, "We wouldn’t be able to study Japanese art, it seems to me, without becoming much happier and more cheerful.” This exhibition features six famous Van Gogh paintings repainted to incorporate Pokémon characters and Pokémon x Van Gogh merchandise.
Atlanta Art Fair Two art fair organizers, Art Market Productions (AMP) and Intersect Art and Design, have joined forces to create the Atlanta Art Fair at the city’s Pullman Yards, which has played host to immersive exhibitions and movie productions. The new fair, helmed by AMP director Kelly Freeman, will have its first edition in October 2024 during Atlanta Art Week, the second iteration of which is currently underway. The exhibitor list will be announced next spring, but the fair plans to have around 50 galleries participate, as well as robust public programming and large-scale projects organized by Nato Thompson.
