As worship leaders, everything we do on platform is meant to bring glory and attention to God. So, the clothes we wear need to be considered with intentionality. 1 Samuel 16:7 says “...People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” So, we acknowledge that although God looks at the heart, people still look at the outward appearance; we should aim to dress
• wear earth tones
• wear layers
• wear solids (add a jacket if you want!)
with excellence and modesty as we represent Emmanuel. Personal style should never cross the line of distraction. Your worship expression should speak more boldly than your clothing.
As you select your clothes, keep in mind you are not only representing yourself, but Emmanuel. Make sure it’s comfortable enough to allow you to worship in a free manner. Consider how every piece and all accessories will move with your body as you jump, dance, kneel, and raise your hands in worship.
Have an additional clothing item to replace any clothes you are not 100% confident will be appropriate for the platform. Having options on hand is always good anyway in case of spills or stains.
Shirts should not be too tight and should not show your stomach or underarms when you raise your hands. Your shirt should also fully cover your shoulders. It should be long enough to fully cover your back if you kneel.
*Avoid very bright or pale colors
Wear cool colors, natural tones, and pastels to keep the congregation’s focus on your face instead of your outfit. That said, drab earth tones could blend into the background too much. White often looks too bright on video, and it can even appear to glow. Too much black looks too dark, especially next to brighter colors.
“White often looks too bright on video”
TV broadcasting cameras can’t handle high contrasts between bright and dark objects, including skin and clothing. If you have pale skin, avoid black and very dark colors as they will make you look paler. Those with darker skin should avoid white and light colors.
Colors also have meanings behind them. Blue is a calming color. Too much red could distract people or make your face look flushed. Other bright, hot colors like hot pink, orange, yellow, and purple can have the same effect.
*Avoid hot or very intense colors
• No tight patterns or checkered shirts that may conflict with cameras (not applicable at nonbroadcast).
• Pants may be distressed, but no major holes or unsightly tears. No holes where skin may be visible above the knee.
• T-shirts can be worn as long as they have no words or large logos.
• Don’t wear white jackets or high contrast outfits.
• Shorts should not be worn on platform.
• Avoid over accessorizing.
• Flip flops are not reccomended.
• Hats can be worn if the brim doesn’t cast a shadow over the face.
For everyone to know Jesus, grow together, and live with purpose.
