My desiretocreatethisZinearosefromaparticularinternal impulse:tosharemy experienceinthecity of Molfettawhile reflectingonmy feelingsandexperiences.It’sacurioustask becauseit’sbeenalongtimesinceI’vededicatedmyself to deeply thinkingaboutmyself andtheexperiencesof recent years.Today,I will addresstheexperienceof adefeminized LatinAmericanbody livinginsouthernItaly,specifically in Molfetta.Inmy case,thismeanssubvertingtheinnate heteronormativegender.
Beforearrivinghere,I decidedtoabandontheremnantsof femininity I still performed,suchasclothing,hair,and makeup.Evenbeforedisembarking,I wasalready thinking abouthowI wasusingmy body andhowI couldexploreit, beingapersonwithpolitical awarenessandknowingthe consequencesthiscouldhaveonmy volunteerexperience.
Andwhatroledoesthecity play inall of this?InMolfetta,I felttruly free.I didnotfacejudgmental looksregardinghowI presentedmy gender.Thisisextraordinary because,even thoughitisatownintheinteriorof Puglia,peoplehereallow otherstobehumanized,regardlessof theircontext.

My firstimpressionsof Molfettawerepositive,althoughI arrivedwithacertainfearof theunknown.Forme,itwasa bigsurprisebecauseI neverimaginedthatoneday I would liveinItaly.AsaBrazilian,I alwaysthoughtitwastoofarfor me,andsuddenly,ithappened:I washere.
I movedtoMolfettabecauseof the European Solidarity Corps programandbecameavolunteerattheAssociação InCoMolfetta¹.Afteradaptingabit,I decidedtoexplorethe city more.Every stepwasadiscovery of unknownand intriguingpleasures!Thestreetswithwhitestonesthat reflectthesunlightinauniqueway,thegreenwindowsthat representwherethelocalslive,thebeacheswithstones² thatofferauniquesetting,andculinary delightslike panzerottisandfocaccias.
ThepizzafromtheBooh!³restaurantandthegelattofrom SanMarco⁴becamefamiliar,addingasenseof belongingto whatwasonceunknown.I rememberaparticularly happy day whenI wenttoBooh!andtheownertoldmeitwashis nameday.I decidedtogivehimawineandachocolateasa gift.Hisgrateful smilewasagiftinreturnforme.
Thiscity,whichwasoncejustadistantpointonthemap,is nowahomefull of lifeandpersonal stories!
