THE SANCTUARY A place of safety and serenity

The Sanctuary is a co-housing project from the first semester of my master’s programme. It seeks to revitalise a deteriorated site to create an intergenerational housing community that fosters social interaction, sustainability, health and wellness. The Sanctuary seeks to provide affordable housing solutions, as well as create green spaces and recreational areas for the community.

The housing crisis is a popular issue today. This is due to the fact that most houses are designed without a target audience in mind. Most housing typologies are similar. They are similar in the sense that majority of housing schemes are town houses or flats. A town house as a typology discriminates in the sense that not everyone can afford it as it doesn’t cater to groups such as students or young adults unless they use house-

share schemes.

My design solution consists of multiple typologies with each typology designed to accommodate a specific class/ age group. This will be further explained in the typology section of my project. The collage ‘the life cycle’ shows how buildings on the site at every point cater for the user as they grow and evolve.

To create a inclusive co-housing community, it is essential to analyse the human as a social being and determine what activities to include in the community/shared space. This will promote inclusivity and will create a sense of community promoting interaction between members of the co-housing.

The site is located in Bradford, Manchester which is a historical mining town. It is at a close proximity to various bus stops and the tram station. Thus, providing an opportunity for harnessing green transportation solutions.

Introducing Flexible Spaces The Flex. Space (Flexible space) is a space which has no pre-defined function like the bedroom, living room or toilet. It is a space whose function that depends solely on the building owner. The space could be an electric wheelchair charging area, an extra bedroom, a nursery for a new born, a fitness room, basically anything.

A house is not a machine to live in. It is the shell of man, his extension, his release, his spiritual emanation.

Town House Adaptability Strategy Most buildings are rigid structures that have a fixed preset. This design gives users a degree of flexibility in the configuration of their space.

1. The Existing Town house: The existing configuration features a living area, flexible space and a kitchen, dining area alongside a bathroom and pantry.

ANCOATS COMMUNITY LIBRARY Utilising the moss as a restorative tool to aid reading whilst tackling social isolation and loneliness

The Ancoats Community Library (A.K.A. Moss house of knowledge) is a retrofit of the Bridge 5 Mill in Ancoats, Manchester. The building was re-purposed to serve as a library for the community aiming to tackle social isolation and loneliness. It was part of a master plan project which consisted of a group of 5 members including myself. Each group member eventually focused on their own individual project.

The project sought out to harness the restorative attributes of the moss to replenish the depleted mental resources caused by continuous directed attention while reading to create a positive and stress free environment for studying. The project glorifies the preservation of existing materials to show the patina of time whilst also integrating new materials and construction to address issues from the building analysis and community analysis at large.

Health has many dimensions from physical health to mental health.

One’s mental health is crucial for their overall health and well-being.

Loneliness and Social Isolation are becoming prevalent in the modern age, and these severely impact ones mental health and can lead to issues like depression, suicide and stress. Thus it is essential to tackle this issue and prioritize social connections and help improve the health and well-being of the public.

The library can serve as a central hub for the community, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. They’re also places where people can come to meet others. Reducing social isolation is an important issue in the context of improving well-being. The library also serves a venue for life-long learning and access to educational resources.

Buildings were isolated and there was only one entry point for each of the building.

The materials from the deconstructed buildings and walls will be reused.

Con n ec tivity Between Build in gs Buildings will be interconnected both spatially and physically by bridges and accesses to allow users to access multiple functions on the site.

L an d scape & Cen tral Plaza The site will be landscaped, allowing direct access to green spaces for each building. There will be a multi-functional plaza in the central area to host a wide range of activities.

The existing building was preserved as much as possible however, new additions were constructed to address the level change and fire escape stairs concerns. The new additions were made to blend with the existing structure to make it look like it was intentional and not an after thought. Also part of the extension building was de-constructed to permit circulation.

An atrium was introduced to improve lighting within the space.

Utilising the atrium for more than lighting: The atrium serves as an additional seating space for studying. To create a non-discriminatory space, an anthropometric study was conducted.

Moss walls purify the air by absorbing harmful pollutants and also by providing Oxygen. Mosses have no roots so there are no negative structural implications.

Restorative Lobby which serves as a point of transition.

This is a metaphor referring to it being a space where you go to replenish your mental resources and reduce your stress levels before reading again.

Details: Year: 2022 Construction Status: Ongoing Office: Ngonyama Okpanum & Associates Building Use: Mixed Use Project Description: The project sits in the heart of Abuja City center surrounded by all the major cultural and government sites. The scheme is within touching distance of Eagle Square, the Federal Secretariat and the Ministry of

Foreign affairs to the Northeast; the National Square and Cultural Centre and Millennium Tower to the Southwest; and the National Mosque further west.

The Citrine Residence is a self-contained, mixed-use development encompassing high-rise towers of residences, offices and hotels strategically placed above podiums containing shops, restaurants, cafés, bars, cinemas, supermarkets and every commercial activity to be found in a city. The project is set to become a major landmark in the city, offering stunning views and access to a wide range of amenities and services. It is expected to create jobs and stimulate the local economy.

Details: Year: 2022 Construction Status: Proposal Office: Ngonyama Okpanum & Associates Building Use: Residential Project Description: Growth in the urban cities in Nigeria and in most developing countries are happening in unhealthy built residential developments this manifests on the poor social, cultural and economic conditions of these countries.

Moreover, the quality of the residential developments in these countries is related to health issues that manifest in continuous reemergence of all types of communicable diseases.

Therefore, residential development must address these urbanizationrelated health issues occurring due to bad residential development and the poor quality of our built environments in our cities. The Jabi Health City seeks to address this by creating a healthy urban setting and adopting the key principles of salutogenesis in its design process.

The city is designed to maximize access to green spaces, promote active transportation, and create social spaces for interaction. Additionally, the city will focus on promoting healthy lifestyles and providing appropriate health services.

The soil test and analysis indicate that the predominant soil type is clayey soil, and a water table was not encountered during the inspection. The structure should be supported with reinforced concrete pad footing at a minimum depth of 1.5m, and 165 KN/m2 should be adopted as the alloying bearing capacity at this depth.
