introduction How can the modernist society move their publications and display around without having to pack and unpack bags?

Our agenda is to challenge the students to think of applications of our vocation outside of the built environment. Students are required to design and build a scale model of portable, folding storage/ display unit to be used at fairs and events to transport and display literature and trinkets sold by the Modernist Society. This year we are collaborating with the Modernist Society, a creative project founded in 2009 by Jack Hale, Eddy Rhead and Maureen Ward, to celebrate modern architecture through publishing, events, exhibitions and collaborations. We are also thrilled to be working with Pobi Shop, a bespoke furniture craftmanship in a joint effort to assist us in the process of building the adaptable display unit.

A 1:2 scale model of a transportable sales trolley and as well as a pop-up exhibition is produced.

Key skills to be learnt in participating this event include interacting with a live client, concept development and model-making techniques, curation and exhibition skills. We have also conducted seminars and tutorials such as SketchUp, Indesign, Photoshop and AutoCAD for the Year 1 and 2 students, that would be useful for them in the future. The Year 1 and 2 students have been very participative and helpful in designing this project. They were divided into groups and designed three adaptable trolleys for a week and reviewed by our client, the Modernist Society’s member, Eddy Rhead. One team was chosen for fulfiling all the requirements made by the Modernist Society.

walking tour of manchester BA student perspective To get inspired, we walked around Manchester to locate some of the Modernist buildings in the city. As well as recording their form, we speculated on materiality and structure, studied areas of shading and exposure, and observed people’s movement and interactions with the buildings.

In exploring these factors, we were able to find similarities between the buildings, and using sketching and photography allowed us to successfully communicate these ideas and share them with each other.

Precedents

The final design is a mixture of all the member’s best ideas. Things naturally got adapted along the process as we started taking into account materials, needs and size.

Team 3’s main precedents are the client’s products that will be displayed on the trolley, as each space is designed for a certain product. Another very influential precedent is the modernist buildings, as they have a very simplistic but functional design, the same approach was used for the trolley. This led to a functional, compact and simplistic design that is movable as well as fixed.

Areas can be pulled out to work as product displays, such as the pull-out bookshelf for the books, the pull-out board for the badges and the pull-out drawer for posters. Storage is a drawer on the Precedents bottom of trolley.

what materials you need: The principal materials of the structure lies in wooden battens joined by glue and screws. Hinges fixed on the foldable partition, allows the mechanism to lock the planes flat and fold back down into the main body.

summary

The events unit is designed to bring BA and March students together, this collaboration is to encourage us to share skills and learn from one another, then apply that newly acquired knowledge and problems solving to a project in an industry outside of our vocation to demonstrate the transferability of the skills gained on this course. It is safe to say that throughout the two weeks we have all gained new insight in one area or another and will be able to apply this to future endeavours. The experience has been equally as valuable for the master students as the bachelors.

A we come to the end of our event, we reflect on the fact that it has been an event with a lot of energy and spirit from both BA and March student, where we delivered a precise 1:2 physical model for the client meeting the brief to the clients satisfactions. We feel very proud of the work achieved in the last two weeks , and we hope nothing but the best as events keeps on developing at the MSA. We’re really grateful for the collaboration of the BA, as they’ve been attending with punctuality and showing great enthusiasm from day one. The hard work certainly does not end here, but we’re grateful for the opportunity of learning news skills as they will be more than useful in the years ahead.
