A look inside someone’s backpack is like a look into their psyche. When one of my friends leaves their backpack around me unsupervised, I can’t control the temptation to take a peek inside and see what secrets they have in there... enjoy the dive into my psyche!

Pick one and add up your letter score to find out what roommate you are at the end!
1. When an issue arises, you...
A. Speak about it immediately to solve it.
B. Do things you know will aggravate your roommate. “You’re irritating me; I’ll reciprocate it.”
C. Stay silent and suffer through it.
2. When do you wash your dishes?
A. As soon as you’re done with them.
B. Nah, I’ll get to it later. (Piles up in the sink)
C. I’ll wash mine and my roommate’s dishes.
3. Do you replace the toilet roll?
A. I’ll replace it if I finish it off.
B. Yeah, I don’t. My roommate has that covered.
C. Yeah, of course! I added more toilet rolls to the cabinet, too.
4. Do you snoop in your roommate’s stuff when they’re not around? (Tell the truth)
A. Look, they have interesting stuff, and I’m curious.
B. Oh, I use their stuff when they’re not around.
C. NEVER, that is such an invasion of privacy.
5. Do you eat food that isn’t yours? (Fridge sharers, let’s be honest)
A. Sometimes, only if I am really desperate.
B. Yeah, what’s theirs is mine. We live in the same space, bro.
C. Absolutely not. I will always ask before taking!
You’re a good roommate, you might be a little controlling or a neat freak. But overall, you’re wholesome, we appreciate you.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news… but you’re not a very good roommate. You’ve got to reevaluate some of your decisions. Perhaps start by talking to your roommate about what they would like you to help them out with within the living space.
You’re a great roommate. I mean, sure, there are many things you don’t really want to do, but the people pleaser in you comes out. It’s okay. We appreciate all that you do.

Hey, boys, let’s take a look at some clothing items we can wear for the winter season because Summer is officially out, and if you don’t get booed up by now, you’re going to spend another Christmas lonely. So, hopefully, after this article, you’ll be able to find your fashion Bae.
Baggy jeans are super trendy right now. It’s essentially a TikTok uniform. Basic? Maybe but we need to start somewhere. If you don’t want to look like your trend riding, you could look for alternatives, such as selvedge denim or perhaps a vintage pair that looks worn in.
Cashmere Beanie in Blue Monday, $306

Obermeyer TB
Big Sur Beanie, $31.99
ACU Military Digital Camo Beanie (found on Ebay) $21.12

Boys, can we please throw away our skull cap beanies with the spider web or the ones with the bubble words on it? What about we lean into something more friendly? Blue-coloured ones, yellow ones, red ones, patterned ones whatever, make it fun. You can honestly pair it with whatever boring outfit you had planned that day, and it will make it better.
JNCO Crown Vintage Baggy Jeans, $150

$1,000
Hiking boots are a great alternative to the TikTok Warrior Instagram explore page Timberlands. Make sure they have metal lace holes in them. If you want a bit of fun, you could add colourful laces onto them. I think it looks really cool, and if you get the right boot, you could honestly wear it every day, everywhere.
Danner Mountain Light GTX Hiking Boot, $579.99

Stüssy x Timberland World
Hiker in Black, US$375
Soccer scarfs are a nice and warm accessory to any winter fit. Let’s just say it’s a good way to retire the soccer jerseys from the summer. We’re still going to be in “Bloke Core,” but let’s make it the winter edition. It’s just like a soccer jersey, samba Jorts kinda thing, but a different font. Jokes aside, I think that soccer scarfs are a nice alternative to your typical Joe Fresh, H&M or Acne dupe scarfs. They add a bit of colour to your outfit, and they can be worn in lots of fun ways. Perhaps you might fancy the babushka form, which you wear over a hat. I think that looks pretty cool. They’re also light and not too heavy, and they make you look casual.

Okay, listen, I’m not talking about any black puffer. I mean the perfect one. Guys, I promise you, all you need is one nice fitting black puffer that you can wear every day, and you will be set for the winter. The perfect black puffer looks like decent quality, fits about your waist or a little lower, and is not a statement piece. Again NOT A STATEMENT PIECE. LEAVE THE SHINY MONCLER
JACKET PLEASE. YOU ARE NOT A ROADMAN. It’s a nice basic piece that you can honestly wear with anything and looks good with anything. A black puffer is to winter style as rice is to an Asian. It’s consistent, it’s a staple, and can be paired with anything. Good quality black puffers can be found at Lululemon, Uniqlo, Aritzia (Men’s superpuff), Northface (and no, don’t get the 1996 Neptune one. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it), and if your budget allows, Arcteryx.

AFC Wimbledon Shop
Double Crest Scarf, $22.63

Nuance Studios Puffer
Jacket in Obsidian, €159,90

Banana Republic
Water-Repellent Puffer

On November 17, BUSA’s annual Amateur Hour took place with performances of all types. Competing for cash prizes or just for fun, we were able to see some of Burman’s talents. From musical instruments and singing to spoken words and dancing, this year’s Amature Hour was one for the books. Starting off with a dance performance from BUSA, the crowd was excited to see what was in store for this year. After that, there were multiple singing performances by Gabe M., Josh R., Erika, ‘Misfits,’ ‘Kay the Artist,’ and ‘Boys of Burman.’ Following the vocals, instruments took over, with Jaden playing the saxophone and Johnathan H. playing multiple instruments. With the crowd singing along or getting hyped with the MC Joshel, it was a fun night, not just for those on stage. Two spoken words were also given by Rosshellyn and Lefika, using the power of words. The last student performance was ‘midjeans’, who performed a dance, hyping up the crowd. While the judges deliberated, the students heard from the professors in their own band who performed three different songs. The night was filled with laughter, singing, and dancing, and it was one for all to enjoy. Congratulations to the winners, Midjeans, Jaden, and Kofi (in order from third to first), and congratulations to everyone else who performed for a job well done!

Homophobia is defined as discrimination against, aversion to, or fear of homosexuality or gay people (Merriam-Webster). Burman University’s Sexuality Statement (2014) states that “We hold that all people, regardless of their sexual orientation, are loved by God and should be treated with respect, fairness and kindness.” Is this statement being upheld on campus? I emailed a survey to all Burman students, and here’s what they had to say:
entitled to their beliefs however, I believe there is a fine line between opinion and hate speech. Somehow, the discussion led to the topic of gay people, and there were multiple individuals talking about how
- Survey Response “ “
I have witnessed a lot of ignorance in my time here, and I am only a first year. I can’t imagine what it’s like for LGBT students who’ve been here for longer.
“I am not gay however, I sat through a horrible discussion about gay people. It was a talk in religion class about what is and is not accepted in Christianity. Everyone is
“because the bible says” there shouldn’t be gay people - which is fine as that is their opinion, but one individual also compared being gay and gay marriage to the same level of “sin” as murder.”
“I have not personally experienced anything
directly affecting me. However, I often hear students speaking badly about the LGBTQ community. More than once, I have heard someone use gay as an insult without being gay themselves. I have also heard people use the F-slur unapologetically to describe “feminine” behaviours they partake in. I’ve also noticed the way people talk about gay people like they’re an exotic animal. I see this in the way they talk about how they ‘thought’ a boy was gay just because he was acting friendly and laughing about it, as if gay people do not actually exist, especially here on campus. I do not think this would be a problem if they actually had gay
friends. I have also had a conversation with someone who said the LGBTQ community were demons (they did not know I was a lesbian). Nothing too terrible has happened to me directly yet, however, I have witnessed a lot of ignorance in my time here, and I am only a first year. I can’t imagine what it’s like for LGBT students who’ve been here for longer.”
“I’ve seen it in the language used between students. I have not had anyone speculate on me specifically, but hearing people discuss other’s sexuality and gender identity and paint it in a negative light to others really makes me feel upset. I’m out of the closet in my personal life but
have not formally come out to other Burman students. I’m worried to speak up and defend my fellow queer students at the fear of becoming one that is judged and discussed negatively because of my sexuality.”
- Survey Response “
I’m worried to speak up and defend my fellow queer students at the fear of becoming one that is judged and discussed negatively because of my sexuality.”
“[I’ve heard] comments on it being sinful, I have more issues with acceptance of my gender identity. I don’t feel safe enough to fully come out with my gender identity here.”
It is important to note that there is a 2SLGBTQIA+ population here at Burman, even though it may
not seem like it. While not every person who answered the survey had experienced homophobia, a number of people had, most commonly in the form of offensive jokes. No matter what your stance is, I ask you to reflect on what kind of culture we are creating or endorsing through our actions and words. Meditate on these words from the Bible: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35 NIV)

What is it?
U-Experience is the coming together of students from different high schools across Canada to experience what it’s like to be on a University campus. However, Burman University does a little differently. At BU, it’s joined with Northern Classic, one of the biggest volleyball tournaments on campus. The programme?
On the afternoon of the 6th of November, students from high schools such as Deer Lake, Crawford High, Kingsway College and others arrived and were checked
into our very own dorms. Students get the full experience of sharing a room with a Burmanite, meaning they get to see behind the scenes what we, as college students, really face. And of course the games! That’s what everyone was here for; the high school students and our Burman supporters felt the excitement for volleyball!
How do our Burman Members feel about it?
for some of us students with anxiety having every area that we use for studying, group work, etc… However, it is a good thing that Burman gets to show its community to potential students.”
How do the BU Student Hosts feel?
“It’s a nice thing to see the campus so full and lively. Everyone is so eager to be here; the campus feels alive!”
“It is a little overwhelming
“It was fun to have some of our friends from high school over and get to see them experience what the next part of life will be like. I was one of these students last year, and it’s nice to do the same thing.”

“It was a little chaotic dealing with them at first, but overall, it was a good experience.”

Interviewed by Teresa Bruce
Hi Moyin! Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
Full meaning of my name translates to “I praise the Lord”. I was born to Immigrant Nigerian parents. From my father’s side, I descended from Nigerian Royalty. I was raised, and I’m still a member of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church. I was brought up in Calgary and graduated from Bishop O’Byrne Senior High School this past school year.
So what brought you to Burman?
Well Burman was initially not even an option. In fact, the only time I’ve ever been to Burman was when my family got lost while we were driving. But when we arrived, we took the time to walk around the campus and explore. I initially applied to the University of Calgary for Biomedical Science and Computer science. However, things didn’t work out as I needed to have a certain grade in math, and my final grade didn’t come in time for the cut-off date. Early this summer, while waiting for my diploma grades, my father encouraged me to apply to Burman, so I did, and I got accepted!
So far, what would you rate your Burman experience?
Well, like any place, there are good things and bad things. I enjoy the small community and I like that everyone is connected to each other. However, it can be bad when secrets start to spread and word gets around.
I don’t eat oysters, they give you diarrhea.
Speaking of which, what’s the most exotic food you’ve tried?
Well, just for the fun of it, I tried an ant. I picked it right off the ground, and it had a lemony zing to it.
Do you anticipate you’ll be eating more ants in the future?
Get to learn more about
Moyin Oyeyemi, a 1st year biology
Have you had a secret of yours spread around yet? Or have you spread anyone else’s secrets around?
No, but if there is a food shortage, we need to be ready to start eating insects.
Could you share with me some accomplishments that you’re proud of?
I invoke the fifth. Who would I tell secrets to?
Well, I’m happy to hear that you aren’t contributing to the chain of secrets, but I guess the world is your oyster.
I play the piano. My mother has made me play ever since I was four, and I have gone through the Royal Conservatory program and went all the way up to level nine. I enjoy practicing, but sometimes it can be annoying and stressful. In Junior High I learned to play the trumpet for the school band. I also played the recorder and the guitar. If we are going by merit, the highest ranking is my high school diploma. In high school, I did partial IB, so although I
was in the program, I didn’t get the IB diploma. I also consider myself to be a writer. I love writing poems.
Could you share with me some of the titles of the poems you have written?
Hope Uplifting, First Snow, Dernière, For all the Girl’s I’ve liked before, The Queen - for Narcissus and his followers, and Eyes.
When you’re writing poems do you have a certain process to come up with ideas or do you always have a bank of ideas ready to go?
Well, let’s start with the poem Hope. I wrote this one when I was feeling a little depressed, and so I just put pencil to paper and wrote all of this in one sitting. As for other poems, it’s more like I have an idea in my head, and when I start writing, it all just comes out. I call this the writer of the story, because even though I’m writing, when I put the pencil to the paper it just comes out.
Which poem are you most proud of? Do you have a favorite poem?
one of the saddest poems I’ve ever written, but I am so proud of my work. Hope I wrote as a work of encouragement, as hope is what keeps us going when things are crashing down around us. I also wrote a story for Halloween in three days. My poem about the first snow fall:
are due later on, I tell my fellow classmates that we should just do it another time and then it all creeps up on us. For me, it really helps to find a place to do homework separate from my room, because I get too distracted if I’m in my room. I often go to the lobby or the library and listen to a wide variety of music.
I like all my poems. But I think Eyes is one of my favorites. Dernière is
First Snow.
First snow, first fall, first snow fall
Cold, colder, blanket covers earth Snow white, snow bright, snow fall, snow storm, Winter, it is time, bring the logs, fire warm for cold nights
Cold wind, warm night, inside night of love, warmth
First snow, first fall, snow fall, winter snow
How do you balance school work with other activities?
Life is about seeking a balance. With school work I have a tendency to procrastinate. The thing about schoolwork is that the hardest part is getting to the point of doing it. Once you’re doing it, you enter into a different frame of mind. As for balancing with other activities, I try to stay on top of things. Although I must admit when I find out things
Who are your favourite musical artists?
When it comes to music, there are only three artists that I believe will never be surpassed: Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Now if you could have lunch with one significant figure who would it be?
Jesus; I have some questions.
What advice would you give to new or prospective Burman students?
Beware of the cafeteria food; it’s not terrible, but it may just take some adjustment. But on a more serious note, even though I struggle sometimes to believe it myself, people really do care about you. Seek them out; they’re always people who care
about you. It will help. Even when you feel you are a lone drop in the ocean of life, there are other drops; seek them out and don’t isolate yourself.
Can you share something about Nigerian culture?
When speaking to adults, you never refer to them by their first name. If you are referring to someone who has kids, let’s say they have a kid named Moyin, they would be called Baba Moyin (father of Moyin) or Mama Moyin (mother of Moyin). In my family, there is great argument over what my father should be called since he has three children.
On another note, how do you feel about Dr. O calling you out in class?
Singles Appreciation Day! I would make it mandatory for all the couples to have to break up for a day and be single and lonely.
Well on the unfortunate topic of love, do you think your future spouse is here at Burman? There seems to be this idea that coming to a Christian university means you will leave with a spouse?

Well, I need to start coming up with my own snappy comebacks. Like the other day when he asked if I was alive, and I responded “no, I’m actually dead”. I’ve even considered bringing a pillow, blanket, eyemask, and pajamas to class.
If you could invent a holiday which one would it be, and why do you think it’s worth celebrating?
Do you subscribe to this idea?
Well, I know that when you take a bunch of adolescents and coop them up in one space without parental supervision, coupling up tends to happen. For me, I’m really not sure. Statistically, I may have a 0% chance, but of course, I would like to find someone who
will complement me as a person.
Can you share some red flags?
Someone who isn’t a believer or who doesn’t close the lid after they flush. Someone who plays with my heart like it’s a toy. Or someone who’s first name starts with T and last name ends with E.
This feels like a personal attack, but fair enough :) Well, as we wrap up, is there anything you would like to close off with?
If it is hard, then it will be soft; the stone comes before the rainbow, weeping in the night, joy is the morning, and victory comes after the bloody war.
Basically, things will get worse before they get better. I came up with that phrase, but then a few months later, the prime minister of the UK started saying that. So I think he stole it from me.
Thank you Moyin for being our student spotlight for this month!
O dabo, which means goodbye in Yoruba!

Burman University boasts a student body of esteemed academic, athletic, musical, and overall outstanding individuals. But beneath the surface, Burman is a campus teeming with quirks. Now, what type of quirks, you may ask? Why every sort, all sorts! This article attempts to capture and share a glimpse of the ample passions upon this hilltop. Who knows, you may just find your own echoed in some of your fellow Burmanites (we are all insane - you are no exception).
“I love cars! Sports cars, Formula 1, hypercars, and JDM. My favourite car brands would be Lamborghini, Rimac, Audi, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, McLaren, and Toyota. My hot take is that I’m not really a big fan of muscle cars or mopar. I also really like anime. Some of my favourites aren’t the most PG, but I would recommend Naruto, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Jujutsu Kaisen. I also like spending quality time with my friends and family. I don’t have any family here in Lacombe, but the friends I have made have become my family. Speaking of family, I love my baby sister to death.” - Anonymous
“I actually really love cars, my favourite brand being Porsche. My least favourite would have to
be any cars in the Muscle group. Also anything Ford or American in general. I really like Japanese cars like JBM. My Dream car would be the Porsche 911 sports classic.” - Elena
“I am passionate about the world around me, from the people to the little things about nature. I just love living.” - Denora
“I am passionate about reading. You may see me become particularly riled up over “The Inheritance Games” or the “Folk of The Air” (otherwise known as “The Cruel Prince”) series.” - Mephew
“The school work has made it difficult for me to spend my time doing what I like, but if I had to say what I am most passionate about in my daily life right now, I would say badminton. I play once a week, maybe twice, and it makes me so happy and is a great way to destress. I’ve also signed up for a badminton club. I’m not very good at it, but it’s my new favourite hobby. If you’re feeling stressed, or are in need a break or want to just have some fun, try badminton! It’s really worth it.” - Seeui H
“I really like earthworms! Maybe this is a slight stretch, but ever since I was a kid I’ve been enamoured by
them. Whenever it rains, I like to go outside and “save” the worms that have wandered to the middle of roads and parking lots. I also adore pill bugs (the fun roly poly bugs) and Garra rufa fish (the fish that nibble away at dead skin). I begged my parents to let me order a bunch during the pandemic, but they firmly denied my humble request :(”- Teresa

“Coaching and playing sports. I like drawing football plays. I like the game planning aspect of it. ”- Tyler Borges
“I don’t really have one big passion right now, and I’m totally fine with that. Honestly, I think I enjoy many little things—like I love reading, picking up new facts, and going on adventures with friends. I also think passions can change over time, so what I am passionate about now won’t always be the case.” - Sigmund Albrecht
So there you have it, Burman is a place of academic brilliance, athletic prowess, musical wonder, and rich personality! Aren’t you proud to call this place home?
