Size: 97,000 SF The Salus Mothers’ Center empowers young women by offering them a safe and supportive environment where they can access the resources and support they need to make informed decisions about their child’s and their own health, education, and career paths for a better future.

The focus of the design of the space is to create a calm, inviting, and comforting environment for women receiving healthcare or other support, providing them with a judgement-free place to go where they can get help that they would otherwise not be able to receive.

RESIDENTIAL UNITS Salus Mothers’ Center is located in the Boyle Park neighborhood of Little Rock, Arkansas. The selected building offers an ideal location proximate to hospitals and amenities such as The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Campus and Medical Center, as well as restaurants, shops, parks, and additional medical facilities Its enclosed outdoor courtyard space ensures a safe and private environment for young children and mothers.

Arkansas has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the United States, with 26.5 teens giving birth per every 1000 females ages 15-19 in 2021. The lack of proper sex education in the American South contributes to higher rates of teen pregnancy and disproportionately effects low income and minority demographics. Salus Mothers’ Center provides a safe space and resources to help users navigate the difficulty and uncertainty that many young women experience when dealing with an unplanned pregnancy.

Salus is Latin for safety, salvation, and welfare, and was the name of the Roman goddess of safety and well-being. Inspired by the conch shell, the animal’s built in sanctuary and armor, the space features soft, neutral colors and materials with warm pink accents. Combined community and private spaces throughout meet different users’ needs. The incorporation of biophilic elements through materials and organic forms create a calming effect and inviting atmosphere. The design is meant to give users the feeling of stepping away from the outside world into a safe and comforting place where everyone accepts and understands what they are going through.

Level Two

The first floor of the center contains a serene lobby space that invites people into the building. To the right is a restaurant and café where young mothers can work to earn money. To the left is a daycare for infants and toddlers to provide childcare while mothers work or go to school. Curved shapes and neutral colors make the space feel luxurious and serene.

The second floor of the center contains a medical clinic where mothers can receive pre and post-natal care. A lab and pharmacy make it easy for women to get testing and pick up prescriptions all in one place. There is a Gym where users can exercise in a way that is customizable for their comfort with low impact yoga and cycling classes. The juice bar provides healthy and convenient options and the spa is a place where they can decompress and relax.

Level Three The third floor of the center contains a resource center with education, legal, and career services to provide counseling for mothers to establish a brighter future. The workshop space work as classrooms for parenting classes, networking workshops, and community outreach. Study rooms provide a quiet space for users to work alone or in groups Residential units provide women with nowhere else to go a safe place for them and their children to stay until they can secure permanent housing.

Level Four The fourth floor of the center contains more residential spaces, study rooms, and another workshop space. There is also a library and computer lab to provide books, tutoring, and technology to women who may be in school or seeking employment. The fourth floor is also home to the center’s main offices.

Work Stations

An Oasis in Dallas

Work stations are divided into neighborhoods by studio. Ample storage space and flexible, adjustable furniture allow employees to customize their workspace to create a sense of identity and attachment. Felt ceiling baffles and privacy screens acoustic and visual comfort and privacy.

Size: 15,000 SF NEXT is a global architecture and interior design firm in Dallas, Texas with a team of 46 employees composed of architects, designers, and support staff. Key design focuses for this office space included integrating technology for a hybrid workspace, fostering an open and collaborative studio culture, and promoting wellness in the workplace.

Inspired by the oasis, the NEXT office is a hub of growth, diversity, and creativity in Dallas’ urban sprawl. Natural materials, abundant daylight, and indoor plants emulate the natural environment to promote wellness in the office.

Open workstations and a variety of group ideation spaces encourage collaboration and foster community amongst employees. Technology is blended throughout the design to keep people connected to the office wherever they may be to make working from home seamless and to allow personal, real-time communication with clients from around the world.

Work Café Inspired by the watering holes of the desert, the work café serves as a gathering space for everyone in the NEXT office. A variety of seating options provide flexibility, with zones for larger groups, one-on-one meetings, and individual work.

Hillsides is a non-profit organization that provides support services for at-risk youth. This space serves as a community center for the organization in Los Angeles for children and young adults facing instability and hardships where they can seek support, mental health treatment, and educational resources they may not otherwise have access to. the concept Grove is inspired by the history and sunny weather of Los Angeles, but also by the idea of growing together as a community. Vulnerable youth are empowered to reach their full potential through counseling, educational support, and a community involvement.

Library Community Interface Program The library houses sixteen computers and four private study rooms where children from the community can come for tutoring and technology classes.

Hillsides members can make a positive impact through tutoring others, or learn and receive help themselves.

On-Campus Retreat Size: 535 SF This team project is a space that caters to the needs of first-year students seeking refuge from stress and anxiety.

This space is designed for mindfulness and meditation, with a communal area and three meditation pods. The space features biophilic design elements, such as live plants and organic seating, to enhance mental well-being. A fountain and adjustable lighting are also incorporated to provide a soothing atmosphere. The meditation pods offer a secure haven with acoustic privacy and customizable lighting levels and color.

Responsibilities: Design and renderings of the common area and exterior

Seating inspired by rocks and pebbles and a water fountain make the space feel serene and ease stress and anxiety. Plant life, daylight, and natural materials provide elements of biophilia to destress users, and acoustic materials absorb sound, creating a quieter and calmer environment.

Meditation Pods Lighting brightness can be adjusted to what each student needs.

Daybeds give users a place to lay down and decompress when they have nowhere else to go, or simply need a break from the stressors of student life.
