The culmination of the exhibit is fitted to 20% of the total exhibition space, allowing visitors to physically feel the spatial comparison of what we have accomplished in such a short time and how much of the century is left to fill up with humanity’s contributions.

The final exhibition is the Reflection Room, where viewers of the exhibit can take a moment to reflect upon humanity’s progress and make a pledge on how to improve in the remaining part of the century using the social media hashtag #OurNext80.

he Caribbean Heart is inspired by a play on the h istory of the original building. The McCarthy Building, affectionately nicknamed t he “ ” due to its proximity to the center of downtown Syracuse, was an existing commercial space under renovation. Through site visits and minimal floor plans provided, students assessed the conditions of the space, finishes, fixtures in its demolition phase, and took a ccurate measurements of the space as a group.

S tudents also assessed the site conditions of the location, taking observations an d measurements of the sun path and amount of direct sunlight coming into t he spa ce, temperature and geographical conditions, population demographics, a mount of foot traffic, proximity to bus routes, access to car parking, and more.

Why repurpose a church structure?

As many people move away from religious ways of life and towards secularism, places of worship are being left behind. These spaces can be simply demolished, or . Apart from the books, materials, and collections, libraries serve a similar role in its societal function, offering a place for the public to gather and create a sense of community.

From an architectural perspective, the existing high ceilings and stained glass windows were emphasized in order to and further elevate the design concept of illumination.

This research aims to understand how the indoor environment impacts human productivity by focusing on a niche subject group - university design students. While workplace design is a widely investigated topic for understanding productivity among the creative class, research that examines work environments for college students is limited. What environmental attributes do students identify as the most conducive or detrimental to their ability to effectively engage in design work?

This study appropriates a qualitative approach to investigate, utilizing anonymous online surveying and in-person interviewing strategies. The participants are undergraduate students at a private American university who are enrolled in one of five design degree programs: environmental and interior design, communication design, fashion design, design studies, or interaction and industrial design. The programs share one building.

Preliminary data suggests that distinct environmental attributes support effective work environments for design students. The attributes include customizable spatial arrangements, accessible yet secure work areas, lighting, acoustics, and perceived indoor air quality. These findings are expected to evolve as the study progresses towards thematic saturation.

This research reveals what undergraduate design students need to be productive in work spaces on campus. This knowledge can be used to design more supportive environments for design students, and to evaluate the adequacy of existing spaces. The long-term goal of this study is to discern the attributes of effective work environments for design students from those for design practitioners; we should not assume that they are the same.
