Typefaces: My first step for both languages was to explore the poem set in a variety of typefaces. For the Greek set, I included less popular fonts, such as Comic Sans, to explore how the characters change shape.

Typefaces: My first step was to explore the poem set in a variety of typefaces. The Malayalam writing system isn’t widely available on Adobe Fonts, so this exploration was very limited; however, I did notice a curling, almost doodle style, flow to the characters in the poem.

In Illustrator, I broke apart each character of the poem, creating shapes from the strokes and the counters. In doing this, I found a handful of relatively recognizable shapes: cane, headstone, shark tooth (or wave), horseshoe, cherry, and butterfly. I am incredibly in love with the idea of using the shapes of the characters to create a coloring book.

When two glyphs were combined, it created a shape resembling a bumblebee. I arranged this symbol into a hexagonal beehive pattern.

Process: Script Analysis, History, and Culture

Malayalam is a segmental writing system, or abugida, in which consonant-vowel sequesnces are written as a unit. The unit consists of a consonant letter followed by a vowel notation (top image). The writing system is partially alphabetic and partially syllable-based. The writing system consists of 15 vowels, 42 consonants, an a few other symbols. Malayalam script is read from left to right.

History of Malayalam Script: Malayalam is first recorded in 830 CE and continues to be used today by 45 millian people worldwide. It is a direct descendent of Grantha script and pulls heavily from the Grantha alphabet. A 7th century example of the Grantha alphabet is featured below.

Malayalam is the official language of Kerala, located on the southern coast of India (map below). During the harvest festival Onam, Kerala’s biggest celebration, Keralites create pookkalam (floral carpet) designs in front of their houses. Kerala has five classical dance forms that each come with their own distinctive makeup and costumes.

Coloring Book Type: I explored two different outline typefaces to determine which would be used to write the poem in the coloring book. I feel the script face is the best option because it has such a great juxtaposition/contrast with the crazy lines of story—similar to adult coloring books that use script typefaces for snarky words and phrases. I traced the prevously created mandala shapes and the first line of the poem to create a basic prototype of a page in the coloring books. Based on this exploration, I think the type needs thicker lines to rise above everything more clearly. Also, additional mandala shapes will need to be created to fill in the space. Looking at it on the computer, I am also wondering if the top mandala shape should show through the eye to convey a sense of emptiness within the character.

Coloring Book Prototype:

I wanted the color of the product line to capture the bright and rich colors found in Kerala art and dance. While exploring color palettes, I looked for a golden color to fit with the last line of the poem: “Can I help writing poems about monkeys with teeth of gold?” I also looked for a deeper, darker color to represent the madness conveyed in the poem. More varied color palettes outside of the criteria also caught my eye because of the colorful nature of a coloring book. I ended up exploring designs with the bottom two palettes. The final color palette was chosen for its connection with the Kerala dance costumes.

This pattern was made by using the word madness, which was created using Malayalam glyphs, to form a pattern. The pattern was then rotated and changed to a lower opacity. I used the darker color palette to create this pattern.

This pattern was made by using the counters of multiple Malayalam glyphs. The counter shapes resembled seeds which tie into the line of the porm describing how granny dried up and burst into seeds. I used the darker color palette to create this pattern.

The Madness Art Box offers an artistic alternative to the typical bath salt and a candle self-care boxes.

Upon first glance, the letterforms of the Malayalam language conjured images of fluid lines and intricate swirling patterns. There was a sense of doodling in a notebook and daydreaming. It is a beautiful written language system. After reading the English translation of poem and discovering the dark, morbid nature of the poem, I thought it was such an interesting juxtoposition: the beautiful, delicate letterforms conveying the dark, twisted meaning. Immediately, I thought of irreverent adult coloring books that display cuss words in elegant scripts.

Ayurveda is an ancient form of holistic medicine found in India that is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between mind, body, and spirit. A meditation practice is considered an essential tool for bringing the mind back into balance.

Coloring is widely considered, by the mental health community, to be a highly meditative act. The focus required to color the small details induces the same state as meditating by reducing thoughts.

The final six mandalas that will be used as the coloring book designs. All of the mandala layers were created by combinng and manipulating Malayalam characters.

For the coloring book pages, the coloring elements are in a thin stroke, while a thicker stroke for the words to ensure that the words stand out on top of the design. Sections of the design were filled with white to create layers within the composition.

Coloring Book Interior: Each page of the coloring book has two lines of the poem. The first line is on the coloring page and the second line is on the back. The back pages also have the Malayalam translation of those lines and a featured mandala. The end pages have been designed to highlight all six mandalas in the brand colors.

The word madness is set in Malayalam, then overlaid in a “frantic, chaotic” manner to capture the sense of craziness. I plan to use this pattern on tissue paper inside the kit packaging. When someone first opens the kit, they will see all of the pieces wrapped in this tissue paper, with a sticker connecting the pages.

This symbol was created from a Malayalam character and then treated with the same, then overlaid, “frantic, chaotic” style. This pattern might be used for the gift wrapping paper with the logo covering a large portion.

Madness Art Box

I used different pens and markers to write "Caution Madness Within," and then created mulitple versions of the phrase. Then I explored different combinations of handwriting and digital type. Following class feedback, I chose to use digital type for Caution and Within, and the more chaotic, handwriting for Madness

Logo Process Work:

Malayalam characters were transformed and combined to create characters that resemble the Latin alphabet.

Creating the Madness:

Inside the coloring book, each page has two lines of the poem. The first line is on the coloring page and the second line is on the back. The back pages also have the Malayalam translation of those lines and a featured mandala. The cover and end pages have highlight all six mandalas in the brand colors.
