ABOUT ME

EDUCATION

I am a fifth year at the University of Cincinnati and this is my fourth year in Urban Planning. I originally came to the University of Cincinnati to study Civil Engineering but I have found my true passion for Urban Planning.

University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati OH B.S. in Urban Planning Certificate in Professional Communication

GPA 3.3 May 2023

Mayfield High School, Mayfield Heights OH Diploma

GPA 3.4 May 2017

I grew up in a small suburb about 30 minutes east of Cleveland. In high school, I attended a college preparatory program called Excel TECC where I was in the CADD (Computer Aided-Drafted Design) program. While I was in this program I fell in love with drafting and data analysis.

Excel TECC CADD Engineering Technology, Mayfield Heights OH Diploma

GPA 4.0 May 2017

I hope to continue my education by pursuing a Master’s in Community Planning through the University of Cincinnati. At the time of graduation, I will also have a certificate in Professional Communication.

My third co-op was in my hometown, Cleveland, Ohio. I worked for Cuyahoga County Planning Commission (CCPC) as a planning intern. My work primarily focused on creating plans and plan elements in Adobe Creative Cloud and Sketchup. I additionally prepared research in the form of case studies, grant background and more. Additional impactful work included community outreach. Navigating community outreach during COVID-19 created an interesting challenge, especially when engaging with a community with very limited internet access.

One of the most exciting this about being an intern is that you enter projects in every stage. I was fortunate enough to be at CCPC during the tail end of the Lakefront Public Access Plan.

The Lakefront Public Access Plan is a plan to connect the public to the lakefront and fortify the shoreline to prevent any future erosion. On the left, is a map of the area with corresponding project pictures. This was created to be placed in a news article to help promote the project. A huge part of this project was getting individual property owners on board.

Something the city of East Cleveland wants to focus on is a safer and more desirable place to live. During the study it was found that 90% of residents live within a 10 minute walk to a park. So, the city decided to focus on the parks and the surrounding areas. This map shows a 10 minute walk shed around the park, highlighting what areas should be prioritized for repair.

One that I touched very frequently was the East Cleveland Parks and Greenspace Plan. East Cleveland is an area that has been consistently loosing population since 1970. The area has a very low median household income and limited access to Internet and other amenities.

COLLEGE YEAR 3

How to Protect the East End, Cincinnati from Flooding My fourth studio focused on making the East End, Cincinnati resilient. The East End is located eat of Cincinnati right along the Ohio River. This makes the area very prone to flooding. My focus was to create a plan to separate the existing sewer system.

6

WHY? Cincinnati has a very old water management system. The current infrastructure will need to be replaced very soon. Instead of replacing the existing system, money should be directed towards separating a new system and implementing green infrastructure.

PROS: - Long-term solution - Increases capacity for sewage to go to treatment plant - Decreases wastewater in river, leads to cleaner water going into river - Green infrastructure beautifies street-scape CONS: - Costly $$$ - Long-term project - Stormwater is no longer sent to treatment plants

PROPOSED

EXISTING

Separate Sewage & Stormwater System

WALWORTH AVE.

On Walworth Ave. the existing median will be replaced by a bioswale, as shown in green. The sewer systems will be separated. Allowing stormwater runoff to go directly to the river or wetland. This area was meant to change as little as possible on the surface. Programs Used: Adobe CC

7

EXISTING

Programs Used: Adobe CC, Sketchup

Programs Used: Adobe CC, Sketchup

In addition to separating the wastewater and stormwater systems, two bioswale will be added on Riverside Dr. The road will be modified to allow the bioswale to be adjacent to the sidewalks on either side. Effectively taking up the space that is currently used as bike lanes.

In addition to separating the wastewater and stormwater systems, a bio-swale and trail will be added in place of the existing railroad. Smaller streets like this without room to expand will still benefit from the separated system even if green infrastructure is not put in place.

1

PHASING: PHASE 1: Everything south of Riverside Dr. This allows for the area most vulnerable to flooding to have some alleviation for storm water. PHASE 2: Area in light blue. This is the area north of Riverside Dr. that is not highly elevated to protect from flooding. PHASE 3: Area shown in orange. This area is elevated and is not as high risk for flooding. Phases 1 and 2 would alleviate some risk of flooding while phase 3 waits to be completed. FUNDING: Referencing North East Ohio Sewer District’s funding plan, funds for this project will come from a variety of locations including: -Bonds -Impervious surface tax -Grants -Investors Most often, funding does not come from the federal level for these projects. According to NEO Sewer district representative, most funding comes in the form of bonds.

1 inch = 1,500 feet

The larger the area of impervious surfaces the larger sum of money that the developer will pay towards the sewer project. In theory, the larger the area of impervious surfaces the more stormwater run-off there is on a site. This tax also makes it financially beneficial for developers to implement pervious surfaces on their sites.

Co-op #1 & 2

University of Cincinnati: Planning + Design + Construction My first two co-op rotations were at University of Cincinnati: Planning, Design and Construction (PDC). I worked in the renovations department to make changes to existing buildings and structures on campus. Most of the work I touched involved making changes to existing plans through redlining, making phasing plans and helping visualize the designs through Revit renderings.

10

One project that I worked on heavily was the transformation of a lab space. The space consisted of many rooms connected through doors. The room was reconfigured and refurnished to accommodate upcoming classes as well as two large pieces of equipment. The vent hood shown in the bottom left corner of the bottom image had to stay in place because of existing venting. But a new piece of very sensitive equipment was being added to the room, shown in the top left of the top image. It was an interesting challenge to create a workable space, as the existing room was obvious not updated or taken care of for a long time. Programs Used: Revit

Another project I was involved in was the reconstruction of the offices off-campus inside of Usquare. This image shows the first of three phases in a phasing plan to create new spaces for two groups at University of Cincinnati. The office of Gender Equity and Inclusion and the Faculty Senate. The plan created three office spaces, one to become empty for potential use in the future. Programs Used: AutoCAD 12

PHASE 2

The above plan details the second phase of the three part phasing plan for the offices at Usquare. The priority was to get the office of Gender Equity and Inclusion up and running as soon as possible. That office would be temporarily held in the north section of the building, highlighted in phase 1. Then moved to their permanent place in the south side of the building, show in phase 2. In the 3rd and final phase, the north offices would be converted to the Faculty Senate space and an empty office for future use. Programs Used: 13 AutoCAD

COLLEGE YEAR 2

Steps on How to Plan a Site My third semester at the Unversity of Cincinnati my studio focused on the steps it takes to plan a site. From researching the site and its respective zoning codes to creating a proposed plan. The site that my class was given is outlined in red.

14

The site is located in Middletown, Ohio which is about a 45 minute drive from the University of Cincinnati campus. The site was located just east of the major highway I-75 and just west of a Fischer homes development. Programs Used: Adobe CC ArcGIS

Conceptual Plan

This map hows a conceptual plan for the site. Planning out zoning districts based on the existing zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan for the area. My goal for the site was to make a ‘park-like’ setting. I focused on separating the types of uses on the site so the residential area was quiet and not disturbed my the commercial area near the highway west of the site..By using a topographic map as a base I was able to plan around large changes in topography. Programs Used: ArcGIS 16

Overall

This overall plan was the final product from the conceptual plan, I was able to modify the plan t lots, buildings and greenspace. These changes w conceptual plan for Middletown as well as zonin car to pedestrian based modified the plans road Programs Used: Adobe CC, ArcGIS

Plan

e site planning studio. Taking pieces from the to account for changes to square footage of parking were made so the plan would be in line with the ng ordinances. Additionally, turning the focus from dways.

Land Use Plan This map shows the proposed zoning for the site. The goal was to one large neighborhood center at the northwest and then have a smaller center just south of the main center. With the addition of mixed use buildings pedestrians become the focus of the area. Programs Used: Adobe CC, ArcGIS

COLLEGE YEAR 1

AN ANALYSIS OF OVER-THE-RHINE My second semester of Urban Planning focused on an area of Cincinnati known as Over-The-Rhine (OTR). OTR has been a key factor in the growth and decline of Cincinnati from the very beginning. Throughout the semester, analysis was been done to understand Over-The-Rhine deeply. Asplanners, we must understand the people of an area to create projects that impact those within it correctly. Each student picked a site to revitalize in the area.

18

An important aspect of this studio was making sure we were revitalizing the area we choose, without displacing the existing residents. CAGIS was used very often in this studio. CAGIS is a company that provides GIS information about the Cincinnati Area and the greater OKI (Ohio Kentucky Indianna) Region. Programs Used: ArcGIS

19

In order to help visualize my original perceptions of Over-The-Rhine an impressions map was made. The impressions map is meant to give a basic interpretation of the area. The focus is on what areas stood out or made an impression. Programs Used: ArcGIS

20

Based on Kevin Lynch’s The Image of a City this map was created to help understand how observers look at Over-The-Rhine. Lynch had a five-year study that helped to understand how users understand surroundings in consistent and predictable ways. It was found that in each mental map created by an observer five elements where used: paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. This map uses those five criteria to show OTR. Programs Used: Adobe CC, ArcGIS

The top image shows the original elevation of the Kroger site. Where the bottom image shows the elevation of the rest of the street. In order to fit both images on the page, they are not in the same scale. But, it is still shown how drastically different the Kroger site’s elevation is compared to the rest of the street. The proposed redevelopment plan moved the building forward in order to keep the same elevation as the rest of the street. This helped increase uniformity on the street and allowed for a better feel of the street.
