ABOUT ME I am a fourth year at the University of Cincinnati and this is my third year in Urban Planning. I originally came to the University of Cincinnati to study Civil Engineering but I have found my true passion for Urban Planning. I grew up in a small suburb about 30 minutes east of Cleveland. In high school, I attended a college preparatory program called Excel TECC where I was in the CADD (Computer Aided-Drafted Design) program. While I was in this program I fell in love with drafting and data analysis. I hope to continue my education by pursuing a Master’s in Community Planning through the University of Cincinnati. Theater Throughout my adolescence, I was involved in Mayfield Youth Theater (MYT). MYT is a theater involving students from various schools and ages. At MYT I played small roles in many shows and had lead roles in the shows a Midsummer Nights Dream and Our Town. As I got older, I became involved with my high school’s drama department. After playing an ensemble role in Tarzan the Musical, I became involved with stage management and technical work. THE STEPS ON HOW TO PLAN A SITE
My third semester at the Unversity of Cincinnati my studio focused on the steps it takes to plan a site. From researching the site and its respective zoning codes to creating a proposed plan. The site that my class was given is outlined in red. The site is located in Middletown, Ohio which is about a 45 minute drive from the University of Cincinnati campus.

The site was located just east of the major highway I-75 and just west of a Fischer homes development. This map was created with an underlay of an ArcGIS map which was then converted into a handdrawn conceptual map. Then finally converted to an Adobe CC Illustrator file.

After researching the history of the site. My studio looked at the existing zoning codes in the area to determine what could be developed on the site. In addition to this, we looked at the conceptual plan for the area to see what officials in the Middletown area desired. With this information, suitability graphs and maps were made to show what areas on the site were the best.

From the suitability map I was able to create a conceptual plan for the site. Planning out zoning districts based on the existing zoning ordinance and comprehensive plan for the area. My goal for the site was to make a ‘park-like’ setting. This design was completed right after the passing of my grandmother who always said she wanted to live in a ‘park-like’ setting, so I hope to one day create one like this for her. I focused on separating the types of uses on the site so the residential area was quiet and not disturbed my the commercial area near the highway west of the site.Another aspect to consider on the site was the changes in topography. By using a topographic map as a base I was able to plan around large changes in topography. This map is hand drawn over a base map that was created in ArcGIS.

This overall plan was the final product from the site planning studio. Taking pieces from the conceptual plan, I was able to modify the plan to account for changes to square footage of parking lots, buildings and greenspace. These changes were made so the plan would be in line with the conceptual plan for Middletown as well as zoning ordinances. Additionally, turning the focus from car to pedestrian based modified the plans roadways. This map was created with Adobe CC over a basemap that was created in ArcGIS.

This map shows the proposed zoning for the site. The goal was to one large neighborhood center at the northwest and then have a smaller center just south of the main center. AN ANALYSIS OF OVER-THE-RHINE
My second semester of Urban Planning focused on an area of Cincinnati known as Over-The-Rhine (OTR). OTR has been a key factor in the growth and decline of Cincinnati from the very beginning. Throughout the semester, analysis was been done to understand OverThe-Rhine deeply. As planners, we must understand the people of an area to create projects that impact those within it correctly. Each student picked a site to revitalize in the area. This map was created with ArcGIS using data from CAGIS.

In order to help visualize my original perceptions of Over-The-Rhine an impressions map was made. The impressions map is meant to give a basic interpretation of the area. The focus is on what areas stood out or made an impression. This map was made by using ArcGIS and drawing over a printed map with markers.

Based on Kevin Lynch’s The Image of a City this map was created to help understand how observers look at Over-The-Rhine. Lynch had a five-year study that helped to understand how users understand surroundings in consistent and predictable ways. It was found that in each mental map created by an observer five elements where used: paths, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. This map uses those five criteria to show OTR. This was created using ArcGIS and the Adobe Creative Cloud Programs.

After analysis of the areas demographics I choose to take the Kroger site on Vine Street in OTR and redevelop it. This project focused on accessibility and neighborhood feel. By keeping the building facĂŁde the same as those on the street and moving the building forward, the building fits better than a typical new build. The top image shows the existing Kroger site and the bottom image shows the apartment building/shop that would replace it. The apartment would be affordable housing options and the bottom level would create room for shops that would supply similar items to the Kroger that was being removed. This was created through a combination of AutoCAD and Adobe CC programs.

The top image shows the original elevation of the Kroger site. Where the bottom image shows the elevation of the rest of the street. In order to fit both images on the page, they are not in the same scale. But, it is still shown how drastically different the Kroger site’s elevation is compared to the rest of the street. The proposed redevelopment plan moved the building forward in order to keep the same elevation as the rest of the street. This helped increase uniformity on the street and allowed for a better feel of the street. These were created in AutoCAD and then edited in the Adobe Creative Cloud programs.

AN ANALYSIS OF SAFETY ON CAMPUS
Throughout my first semester at DAAP I worked on a project surrounding the idea of safety on campus. In order to determine what can make a space feel more or less safe, I focused on the idea of encloser. Using the same coloring as the last page with dark red-brown being the least safe and light blue being the safest. As this infographic shows, the more enclosed space is the more uncomfortable a space will feel. This comes from the natural human desire to want to be aware of your surroundings. This piece is a hand drawn gradient taken into Adobe CC programs to become a graph.

HIGH SCHOOL
FOUNDATIONAL WORK IN REVIT, AUTOCAD AND SOLIDWORKS
During my time at Excel TECC CADD, I also learned several programs including Revit. This page shows my semester final of my senior year in the program. The project was to create a ‘man-cave’ or ‘she-shed’ and include everything we would like in one. The class was given restrictions including how large it could be and a few minimum interior requirements. Since I am always working on something and I love to cook, I made sure mine had a small business nook and a full kitchen.

Before coming to the University of Cincinnati I was apart of a postsecondary program at my high school called Excel TECC CADD. This program focused on Engineering and Architecture. While I was in this program I had the opportunity to create a prosthetic hand for a recipient in my neighborhood. The hand is completely 3-D printed and works with the bending of the wrist. My recipient Manny lives in a neighboring city to my hometown and was 10 years old at the time of the creation of his hand. He was born without fully developed hand and this hand allowed him to participate in things he always wanted to.

After Manny was awarded with his hand, the design of the hand went to several competitions and even to Germany. The design was awarded first place at the SkillsUSA Ohio competition and then went on to win fifth place at the national SkillsUSA competition. This photo shows former President Obama and the former Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel seeing the hand at the largest trade fair in the world that is hosted in Munich, Germany every year. The created of the 3-D printer that was used to make the hand (MakerGear) took the hand to Germany to show how 3-D printers can impact others.
