Setless Architecture is a small architectural firm based in Toronto that focuses on custom high-end residential homes. Over the last 3 years, I have taken a 10,000 sq.ft. residence in the Toronto neighbourhood of Forest Hill from schematic design into the construction administration phase. The project team was composed of myself working under the supervision of the firm’s owner.

As the project moved from from DD into CD, more detailed drawings were required as I started to coordinate with various suppliers. This phase allowed me to review and comment on shop drawings , such as window, steel, and rebar.

The project is currently under construction.

Due to the complex nature of the project, extreme attention to detail was needed in the coordination of all engineering systems, landscape design, and interior design. The project required very detailed drawings to sufficiently communicate the complex coordination of these systems. I was able to illustrate the extensive concrete beams, suspended slab, and any sleeving that was required in two drawings. elevation render

CAMP LAKE COTTAGE firm SETLESS ARCHITECTURE

This black metal-clad cottage is located on a remote portion off of a lake in the Lake of Bays region. The pitched roof is made more dramatic by cantilevering the main massing off of a landscape wall, exaggerating the already hilly landscape.

Through SD to DD, I translated a schematic layout into a realized detailed set in preparation for permit submission. A structural system was worked out with the engineer, and schematic truss designs were started.

This project is still in its design development phase.

Arquitectonica is an award winning multi-disciplinary firm with offices all over the world. During my year in the New York office, I worked on a number of projects with a small team of four. The main project I was involved in was Carlyle South, a 34-storey residential tower in Alexandria, Virginia.

Due to the demands of the project, it was my responsibility to set up and maintain project standards in AutoCAD, Photoshop, and 3DS Max for drawings and renderings. I was also responsible for keeping track of project requirements including parking, FAR, efficiency, and unit count. These standards were incredibly important to the project due to the amount of design changes the building went through during its conceptual and schematic design phase. During these phases, I designed the parking and unit layouts for the building with consideration for future phases.

For important client and city meetings, I became responsible for the communication with the out-of-house renderers in regards to mark-ups and ensuring on-time completion due to deadline shifts. As a result of the masterplan size, I also gained experience in communicating with outside consultants, including landscape and city.

DIALOG is a nation wide Canadian multi-disciplinary award winning firm. Their work ranges from architectural projects, interiors, and urban design.

During my 4 month internship, I worked closely with the design team managed by Donna Clare on the Royal Alberta Museum.

The work cumulated into preparing the final schematic design package. My main responsibilities for this important deadline included testing out designs through 3D modelling, aiding the clean up of the Revit model, rendering, and photoshoping final renders. Another major part of my job was to make and maintain a working 1:100 scale model of the entire museum that was continually updated over this time to reflect design changes and options.

This project was presented at the 106th ACSA Annual Meeting: The Ethical Imperative, Grow Op: Artist Talks, and accepted to the EKU Living with Animals Conference. A portion was exhibited at Grow Op 2018 and awarded the Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts Award.

Military landscapes are seldom seen as ecologically diverse territories, full of life. Yet, there is growing evidence that these volatile lands are finding a second life as animal refuges, born out of necessity under the growing effects of the Anthropocene and sixth wave of mass extinction. It is the very nature of the military landscape – weaponized, contaminated, protected – that deters regular human activity and allows this new, damaged Nature to appear. These new cyborg landscapes tell a story of a posthuman future where new ecological relationships are formed between the military artefacts and the animals that inhabit the land. These artefacts range from chemical contamination to landmines, nuclear fallout to defensive perimeters. Although this is a worldwide phenomenon, the thesis focuses on the United States in recognition of their $611 billion military-industrial complex that places them at the forefront of this investigation.

No Man’s Land presents two test sites to illustrate these new complex relationships: Johnston Atoll (closed/abandoned) and Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge (closed/reused). By recognizing the ecological importance of these landscapes, the thesis argues to re-introduce these territories back into the American imagination as the ‘involuntary park’ – a kind of posthumanist National Park. A series of interventions have been proposed to leverage human engagement by reaching out to the civilian public under the guise of ‘voluntourism’ to further encourage animal occupation. The thesis aims to interrogate the contradictory nature of these landscapes and question their future in an increasingly anthropocentric world.

The placement of the animal as the primary stakeholder in the Anthropocene and the rise of a new cyborg landscape calls for a proposal: to create a new series of parks akin to the National Park System fit for a posthuman 21st century that argues for continued animal occupation. Within this is the choice to remove the responsibility from the Department of Defense in regard to their dismal track record and a rejection of the myth of “pure nature”. Looking back to 1988 where the first round of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) commission was seen, only 3% of the contaminated sites had been completely cleaned up within 5 years with a budget of $164,773,000. In 2018 the requested budget for the next round of closures in 2021 is $255,867,000, less than that of 1988 given inflation. Given these trends, the thesis chooses instead to engage elsewhere. In discussing the idea of a new National Park System, many issues must be considered. What notion of agency does the design necessitate and who is it for? How much or how little design is needed to be successful? What does it mean to design for non-human species?

The design for these involuntary parks chooses a combination method must be employed that sets up a unifying methodology with design objectives (top-down) that allows room for a highly calibrated response at the bottom (bottom-up). Then, the design objectives are as follows: 1. Strengthen ecological connections and needs by encouraging colonization by the animal.

2. Ensure flexibility in response to site-specific needs and conditions.

3. Consider material cycles.

4. Consider growth over time.

Johnston Island, or Kalama Atoll to Native Hawaiians, is a 13 km2 atoll located in the Pacific Ocean. Its 4 islands are currently unincorporated territory of the United States and has been under the control and jurisdiction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service since 2003. Prior to this, the islands were occupied by multiple branches of the U.S. military in which many technological pollutants have been left behind due to its 69 years of intense military activity. site plan

Between 1934 and 2003 (figure 2.41), the islands were used for many activities, including a naval refuelling depot, airbase, chemical weapons storage and disposal site, nuclear and biological weapons testing, and space recovery. Many of these activities were incredibly harmful to the existing environment and remain present to this day, altering the atolls’ ecological network. The main island, Johnston Island, quadrupled over 20 years, while 2 new islands, Akau and Hikina, were created.

rocky mountain arsenal national wildlife refuge

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge is a national refuge maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service located on the border of Denver, CO. However, the site was originally an arsenal opened by the U.S. Army to manufacture chemical weapons in World War II. Near the end of the war, the army leased out parts of their facilities to private industries like Shell Oil Company who manufactured pesticides and herbicides.

The processes undergone on this site - the manufacturing and demilitarization of weapons, the manufacturing of pesticides, and the dumping required for both, left behind one of the most polluted landscape in America. Because the site was allowed to remain undeveloped before and during remediation efforts, animals began to re-occupy the landscape. Once this was noted, President George W. Bush established the land as a wildlife refuge in 1992, and a cleanup program was initiated by all 3 bodies (U.S Army, Shell Oil Co., and USFWS) between 1992-2010.

This project was shown at the Rome Show at Bridge Centre for Architecture + Design.

In Rome, an excavated city of simultaneous stories, there is constantly a life that exists between what is above and below the ground. The placement of a museum on this site, a serene but underused neighbourhood park along the Aurelian Wall, required a great sensitivity to the ground plane.

The four themes: Forma Urbis, Imago Hominis, History and Myth, and Nature and Landscape were developed into a mnenosyn atlas broken down into 4 eras of Rome’s history. Architectural qualities were then used to organize a linear movement through the exhibits: Scale, Framing, Obstructing, and Revealing. These exhibits and additional program sit in and on the landscape to form a dialogue with the public park redesigned along the site.

The relationship between above and below ground was explored through landscape elements that represented the influence that the built museum had on the park above. Using the towers as an organizing element each plot of land had a different program to help create a rhythm along the Aurelian Wall.

Grow Op is an annual exhibition held at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto that “examines how humans and other species live within and without natural systems of growth, change, abundance, scarcity, decay and life” through art and design. A portion of my thesis work, seen earlier, was selected through a juried process to be shown on the 2nd floor of the Gladstone Hotel. The show received press from Canadian Architect, Toronto Life, and BlogTO with over 1,800 in attendance over its course.

My work was awarded the Toronto Friends of the Visual Arts Award valued at $2000.

This project was installed for Nuit Blanche. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZRJyRqY6nw) For Nuit Blanche, F_RM lab, a student-led collective at the University of Waterloo, was chosen as an independent artist to install a large canopy in downtown Toronto. The installation asks the viewer to contemplate the issue of light pollution, while imagining how we could regain a connection to our skies.

My main role was as a fabricator and coordinator. Through the process of creating the mesh canopy, I kept the process organized and taught volunteers the methodology. I also assisted in set-up and take down, as well as ran the event overnight for 12 hours.
