Welcome to Birch Creek!

It is my pleasure to welcome you back to another music-filled season here at Birch Creek Music Performance Center! We have all experienced a couple of very challenging years. We are now excited to be reopening at full capacity this year after operating at half capacity a year ago and being shut down in 2020. Enhanced protocols and facilities improvements are allowing us to reopen in a safe environment for all.

We thank you for your continued support of Birch Creek throughout these challenging times for the performing arts. Together, we strive to fulfill our mission of providing performance-based education for these young, gifted students. Your presence here is an important part of that experience.

letter from the executive director Dear friends and music lovers, Welcome to Birch Creek’s 47th season!

This is a place with unique stories of life-changing music education, performances, and the fascinating career paths our students have chosen after leaving Birch Creek. These stories are testaments to the richness of the academy experience for our students and faculty, and the forward thinking of Birch Creek’s leadership through the decades. They create Birch Creek’s fascinating history and tell of the thousands of young musicians whose lives have been touched by Birch Creek. These stories are our legacy for those who follow.

We learned a lot during the pandemic. Music does not stop. The future of music is alive and well with our young people, faculty, and now with the adults who attend our music retreats.

With confidence, parents and teachers send their students to experience Birch Creek. Our worldclass faculty expand the horizon of possibilities by mentoring students to reach beyond their abilities and experience a snippet of the life as a full-time musician.

Our staff, faculty, Board of Trustees, and Associates volunteers work tirelessly to provide the most excellent, rewarding musical experience for friends and music loving concertgoers like you. Your attendance here today fulfills our mission to provide a live audience for our performing students and faculty.

This summer, the Birch Creek campus returns to pre-COVID-19 capacity--full student enrollment, a full contingency of faculty and teaching assistants, 30 concerts in the Dutton Concert Barn and another 30 free outreach concerts within the Door County peninsula and growing adult music programs. We know this 47th season will be phenomenal because of you and your confidence in us.

A Birch Creek Timeline

1975

1976

Birch Creek Founders Jim and Fran Dutton purchase the A-frame on County E across from the current campus.

The Duttons begin a music school in their A-frame home with 12 students. The A-frame is also the site of the first public concert. That winter, the 19th century farmstead that is Birch Creek’s home was purchased from the Tischler family of Baileys Harbor.

1977 - 1986 1977 The Granary is renovated for use as a student dorm, the barn for performances. First performance held in the barn.

1978 Student enrollment is 53; 11 concerts are performed over a 5-week session.

1979 Enrollment is 103, and faculty includes Russell Dagon, principal clarinetist with the Milwaukee Symphony, marimbist Gordon Stout and Lovell Ives, both of the UW–Green Bay jazz program.

1980 Twenty-two concerts are performed in a full summer season including four free Sunday family matinée concerts.

1982 G. Allan O’Connor from Northern Illinois University begins the Steel Band program at Birch Creek; enrollment is 143, concert attendance 3,950.

1984 A new dormitory capable of housing 38 students and 6 faculty is built.

1986 Birch Creek’s 10th anniversary is celebrated with performances by Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra conducted by Buddy Morrow.

1988 - 1998 1988 The Birch Creek Associates volunteer organization is formed.

1990 The Picnic Grove is planted and the Gazebo is built by the Associates.

1991 Popcorn has its debut as a scholarship fundraiser.

1992 Birch Creek management passes to a reorganized Board of Trustees after the campus is purchased from the Duttons.

1994 A new administration building and a faculty dorm are built.

1995 20th Anniversary celebration includes dedication of the James N. Dutton Concert Barn.

1998 A new kitchen/dining room is added to the Student Dorm. Student enrollment is 178; overall concert attendance exceeds 9,000.

1999 - 2003 1999 A new music library is begun in the farmhouse. Jazz pianist Marian McPartland continues the tradition of great guest artists at Birch Creek. The Jazz Ambassadors band is formed as part of Birch Creek’s outreach program.

Jim Dutton passes away.

2000 Birch Creek celebrates its 25th season, welcoming guest artists Peter Schickele, Gene Bertoncini, Harold Jones and Freddy Cole.

2001 A piano lab, new popcorn stand and gift shop make their campus debut.

2002 The Associates Bench Project begins. Stage extension is added to accommodate growing ensemble of student performers. The Dutton Concert Barn gets a new roof.

2003 The Farmhouse undergoes major refurbishment.

2004 - 2008 2004 Clifford Alexis, world-renowned steel pan builder and tuner, performs masterclasses for students and concerts for audiences.

2005 Birch Creek celebrates its 30th season.

2007 Perfect Pitch Capital Campaign to add three new buildings begins on opening night.

2008 The new Rehearsal Center, Faculty Dormitory and Maintenance Facility are completed and dedicated on June 30, effectively doubling Birch Creek’s footprint.

2010 - 2017 2010 To close out the Capital Campaign, the Final Pitch campaign is launched.

2011 “Jazz at Birch Creek” is recorded by Wisconsin Public Television in August and airs in 2012 throughout Wisconsin and in Rochester, NY. 2014 The Final Pitch campaign concludes.

The Associates’ new concession stand in the East Granary opens in celebration of their 25th anniversary. Wisconsin Public Television records Symphony and Percussion & Steel Band sessions for broadcast in 2015.

2015 Birch Creek celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Fall Concert Series is introduced.

2016 The Dutton Concert Barn’s South Wall is replaced and a new infrastructure plan begins.

2017 New electrical service to the west campus and an improved campus water filtration system were completed; the barn received lightning protection and new stage lighting.

2018 - 2021 2018 Adult Band Camp returns for second year. Phase III of the Infrastructure and Technology Plan is completed as office systems are moved to the Cloud.

2019 Chamber Music Retreat for adults is offered for the first time in August.

Dutton Concert Barn stage is named “Stage of Stars” and the gazebo is named by Jackie and Steve Kane.

2020 COVID-19 pandemic causes Academy sessions and all summer concerts to be cancelled. Office staff work from home and Birch Creek Online is launched.

2021 Academy reopened at half capacity with outdoor concerts.

Percussion & Steel Band Dan Moore Program Director Dan Moore is in his 24th year as a Birch Creek faculty member and has served as Director of the Percussion & Steel Band Program since 2016. Dr. Moore is Professor of Percussion and Director of the award-winning percussion program at The University of Iowa where he recently received the Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. Moore is an internationally known musician, composer, and educator. He is a Yamaha international performing artist, a signature mallet artist for Innovative Percussion, and a performing artist for Sabian Cymbals, Gon Bops Percussion, and Grover Pro Percussion. His music is published by Row-Loff Productions, Innovative Percussion, Alfred Publishing, and Cricket City Music and Media. At Birch Creek, Moore leads the faculty ensemble and teaches marimba/vibes performance, improvisation, leadership, snare drum technique, ensemble performance, and musicianship.

Liam Teague Steel Band Director This year marks Liam Teague’s 27th season with Birch Creek and his seventh as Steel Band Director. Teague is Professor of Music and Head of Steelpan studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where he also directs the renowned NIU Steelband. He is also the recipient of an NIU Presidential Research, Scholarship and Artistry Professor Award. His commitment to demonstrating the great musical possibilities of the steelpan has taken him throughout the world, and he has received many awards from his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Humming Bird National Award (Silver) and the Ansa McAl Caribbean Award for Excellence. Teague has also performed with many diverse ensembles which include: National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony, Czech National Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, Panama National Symphony and Chicago Sinfonietta. He has appeared in concert with Grammy-Award winning musicians Paquito D’Rivera, Dave Samuels, Zakir Hussain and Dame Evelyn Glennie. Teague serves as arranger for the Nutrien Silver Stars Steel Orchestra at Panorama (the most celebrated steelband competition in the world).

Symphony Faculty Ricardo Castañeda

Program Director, Sarah H. Wright Chair

2022 marks Ricardo Castañeda’s 25th year at Birch Creek. Castañeda received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance from Northwestern University, where he was a student of Ray Still, former Principal Oboist of The Chicago Symphony. He is a winner of the Northwestern University Concerto Competition and a recipient of the Wade Fetzer award for excellence in performance. Having made his solo debut with the National Symphony of El Salvador at age fifteen, he has since appeared as a soloist in Latin America, Europe, the United States and, more recently, Japan.

Castañeda is currently Principal Oboist with the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Sinfonietta, and solo English Horn with The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a member of the Chicago Ensemble and Barossa Woodwind Quintet. Previous positions include Principal Oboist with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Elgin Symphony Orchestra and solo English Horn with the Mexico City Philharmonic. An active freelance musician, Castañeda enjoys performing all genres of music. He has played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera Orchestra, Grant Park Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theater and has been principal oboist for orchestras for The Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theater, and Joffrey Ballet, as well as numerous Broadway in Chicago shows.

Taka Matsunaga Guest Conductor As the recipient of the 2021 Conductor of the Year granted by the Illinois Council of Orchestras as well as the third-place winner of the 2020 and 2021 American Prize in Orchestral Conducting, Taka Matsunaga is currently the Director of Orchestras and Assistant Professor of Music at Elmhurst University, where he conducts the University Orchestra. He is also a Founder and Music Director of the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Matsunaga came to the United States in 1998 to pursue his violin studies with David Taylor, Joseph Golan and Robert Chen while attending Roosevelt University and Northeastern Illinois University, where he received his master’s degree in music. From 1999-2001, Matsunaga was a regular member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, a training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Matsunaga went on to join the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, South Bend Symphony Orchestra and the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra, where he served as an Assistant Concertmaster.

As a conductor, Matsunaga made his debut at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2018 with the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra. He has conducted in Vienna, Salzburg, Detroit and at Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center in Chicago. Matsunaga presented his conducting workshop for young conductors at the Illinois Music Education Conference virtually in April 2021 and also in January 2022 in Peoria, Illinois. He was also invited to conduct as a guest conductor at the Northern Illinois High School Orchestra Festival at Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa, Illinois in January 2022.

Symphony Faculty Brian Groner

July 4 Concert Conductor, Farewell Concert

Birch Creek’s July 4 concert marks Brian Groner’s farewell concert and 27 seasons as conductor of the Birch Creek Symphony Orchestra. A conductor known for his keen musical sensitivity, Brian Groner is deeply committed to empowering orchestral musicians and has a thorough understanding of the process of orchestra building. Groner has the ability to invite his players into a state of mind that separates the exceptional conductor from the merely competent. Known by his audiences for his witty interpretations and history lessons of serious orchestral pieces, Birch Creek is grateful for the decades of musical accomplishments under his baton. Groner’s accomplishments include a successful 23-year tenure with the Fox Valley Symphony in Appleton, Wisconsin, which wrapped up in 2019. Formerly, Groner was the Music Director of the Fox Valley Orchestra in Illinois and the Artistic Director for the Midwest Mozart Festival. As a guest conductor, he has appeared on the podium for many notable ensembles including the Shenzhen Symphony (China), The San Diego Symphony, The Czech National Symphony Orchestra (Prague), and The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Maestro Groner’s concerts have been broadcasted via satellite by National Public Radio in over 50 major cities across the United States. He has also conducted the world premieres of over twenty substantial new American compositions.

Alan Snow

Concertmaster, Charlotte Lukes Chair

Alan Snow was appointed 2nd Associate Concertmaster of the Omaha Symphony in July of 2021. Since his performance with the Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra at age 13, Alan has performed solo and chamber works internationally, including appearances at Chicago’s Symphony Center, London Symphony Orchestra St. Luke’s, la Sala Manuel M. Ponce in Mexico City, and others. Previous concertmaster appointments include the Evansville Philharmonic, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, Festival Napa Valley Music Academy, Britten-Pears Young Artists Program, Indiana University’s top orchestras, Carmel Symphony and Music Academy of the West.

An avid chamber player, Alan studied closely under the Pacifica Quartet and the Takács Quartet and has recorded two chamber music albums. Additionally, Alan is an active chamber music coach and teacher, having served on faculty at the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival, the University of Evansville Music Department, and the Evansville Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

A Chicago native, Alan participated at Midwest Young Artists for nine years, where he received intensive orchestral and chamber music training. He studied with Gerardo Ribeiro at Northwestern University before receiving his Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University under Sibbi Bernhardsson of the Pacifica Quartet and Alexander Kerr, concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Alan was a student at Birch Creek in 2010 and a winner of Birch Creek’s concerto competition.

Big Band Jazz Faculty Jeff Campbell Program Director and Academy Jazz Orchestra Director, Jazz I & II 2022 is Jeff Campbell’s 34th year at Birch Creek and his 25th as Jazz Program Director. Dr. Campbell is Professor of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media and department chair at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY. He has carved out an impressive career as a bass player fluent in both the jazz and classical idioms. As a jazz bassist, Campbell has performed with Marian McPartland, Gene Bertoncini, Rich Perry, Trio East, Harold Jones, and the Eastman Jazz Quartet featuring Harold Danko. In high demand across the globe, he has performed at such prestigious European musical events as the Nice, Montreux, North Sea, Riga, and Parnu jazz festivals and has also appeared in the former Soviet Union and the Baltic Republics. Additionally, Campbell is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra bass section. He has numerous CDs to his credit.

Jazz I Faculty Jim Stombres Studio Band Director, named in his honor 2022 is Jim Strombres’ 34th season with Birch Creek. Stombres retired in 2015 after more than 30 years as director of bands in three suburban Chicago high schools, finishing his career at St. Charles North High School in St. Charles, Illinois. He holds a diploma in sacred music from the Moody Bible Institute, a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois State University, and a Master of Music Education degree from Northwestern University. He is active in the Illinois Music Educators Association and the Illinois Chapter of the International Association of Jazz Educators. Under Stombres’ direction, the Naperville North Wind Ensemble performed at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival and received the DownBeat Student Music Award for Outstanding Wind Ensemble. He is also a co-director of Birch Creek’s Wind Ensemble Retreat (formerly Adult Band Camp).

Gil Wukitsch Lab Band Director, Anthony and Judith Licata Chair Gil Wukitsch has been teaching at St. Charles East High School since 1997, where he teaches Jazz Band, Wind Symphony and AP Music Theory. Along with his teaching duties, Gil serves as the Lead Teacher for Fine Arts, overseeing the Drama, Music and Visual Arts departments. Wukitsch has a degree in music education from DePaul University, as well as a Masters in Educational Leadership from Aurora University. While at DePaul, he was a member of the nationally recognized Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra, and studied trumpet with Ross Beacraft and Bob Lark. Gil began attending Birch Creek as a student in 1989 and since then has been a member of the Academy Big Band as both a teaching assistant and faculty member, as well as serving as the Lab Band and Studio Band Director.

Jazz II Faculty Steve Sveum Lab Band Director Steve Sveum is the retired Director of Bands at Sun Prairie High School in Sun Prairie, WI, where jazz ensembles under his direction were selected twelve times as finalists in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Essentially Ellington” national jazz competition, placing third three times. Sveum has been a faculty member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Band Director Academy and has worked as a clinician at festivals around the United States. He was also a 2014 recipient of the DownBeat Jazz Education Achievement award. This is Sveum’s 19th season at Birch Creek.

He is also a co-director of Birch Creek’s Wind Ensemble Retreat (formerly Adult Band Camp).

Nic Meyer Studio Band Director Nic Meyer serves as Director of Jazz Ensembles at New Trier High School, where he oversees a comprehensive jazz program consisting of four large jazz ensembles and six jazz combos. Under his direction New Trier’s Jazz Ensemble 1 has opened for Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra at Birdland in NYC, Delfeayo Marsalis and his Uptown Jazz Orchestra at Snug Harbor in New Orleans, along with many other artists at New Trier’s annual Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival. Prior to joining the New Trier faculty, Meyer was the jazz program director at Midwest Young Artists. 2021 Student Awards The Birch Creek Student Awards are presented at the end of each two-week session and are based on musicianship and leadership. First-place winners are eligible for a partial tuition scholarship for the following season. In the event that a first-place winner cannot return, the runner-up or honorable mention is eligible for the scholarship. The two first-place winners of the Concerto Competition are eligible to perform one movement of a concerto on opening night of the following season. Artists in the Schools / Community Outreach Birch Creek’s Artists in the Schools outreach program (AIS) brings nationally acclaimed Birch Creek faculty members back to Door County after the summer performances have concluded to serve as clinicians for Door County public school music students. Faculty members offer powerful insights into music practice and performance and demonstrate techniques that can be immediately applied in the classroom.

The first Artists in the Schools was launched in 2002 with Percussion & Steel Band faculty as clinicians. The AIS program continued each year until 2020, when COVID-19 forced school closings and season cancellations. Birch Creek plans for a safe return of AIS to continue the joyful exchange between professional musicians and Door County students.

Michael Stryker - The 20 year club Michael Stryker is Clinical Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Stryker’s doctoral studies at the Eastman School of Music were completed fall of 2009 with the degree awarded spring of 2010. Past degrees include a B.S. in Biology from Purdue University in 1985 and both the B.M. and M.M. in Jazz Performance from DePaul University in 1996. Previous teaching positions include Western Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University, DePaul University, and the University of California at Berkeley. Stryker has been a faculty member and performer in the Birch Creek Jazz I Orchestra since 2002.

2022 Inductees Faye Seeman The 30 year club Faye Seeman, principal harpist of the Chicago Sinfonietta and Joffrey Ballet orchestras, is adjunct professor of harp studies at Wheaton College, Northern Illinois University, College of DuPage and Northeastern Illinois University.

Seeman has been a Birch Creek faculty member and performer in the Birch Creek Symphony Orchestra since 1991.

Reggie Thomas The 30 year club Pianist/Organist Reggie Thomas is Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Northern Illinois University, and has taught at Michigan State University and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Reggie performs with an illustrious number of talented musicians and fronts his Chicago based group, Trio Nexus with George Fludas and Dennis Carroll. Reggie is Ensemble Coach for NYO Jazz Orchestra, the national youth jazz orchestra of Carnegie Hall and is host of their NYO Jazz Instagram Show “Reggie Interviews.” He has held “The Count’s Seat” as member of The Count Basie Orchestra and rhythm section accompanist for the Herbie Hancock International Jazz Competitions. For years he was a consultant/clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center for their Essentially Ellington Program and Band Director Academy. Reggie has a number of recordings and has been performing at Birch Creek since 1990.

This season, we continued implementing phases of our Infrastructure and Technology Plan by installing a wireless internet bridge between the Associates Play It Again Stand and Dutton Concert Barn; boosting the strength of cellular provider signals on Birch Creek’s campus, upgrading fire safety equipment in the West Dorm and Kitchen, and continuing to improve health protocols by transferring to touchless towel dispensers and ticketing system.

Or so I thought back in 1978.

Vicki Peterson Jenks welcomes audiences back to Birch Creek for an outdoor concert under the evening skies in 2021.

After picking those ubiquitous buckets of cherries, my husband and I stopped with my in-laws in Sturgeon Bay to have dinner on our way home. As we were leaving, I saw a poster that intrigued me, advertising a two week stay at a place called Birch Creek to study with the incredible world-class percussionist, Gordon Stout! A percussionist myself, I wondered how I could possibly pass that up? So, I registered posthaste, met Jim and Fran Dutton, stayed in their A-frame house across from Birch Creek, worked diligently in both marimba classes and orchestra, and fell in love with the ambience of Birch Creek!

For 44 years, I have melted into the heartbeat of Birch Creek, become part of the closely-knit faculty, developed friends for a lifetime, been transported around the world via the amazing artistry of Birch Creek’s Percussion & Steel Band faculty, learned more from my students than they could ever learn from me, sat around the campfire with “my kids” in the evening, and have had my soul strengthened. Birch Creek is a living legacy I want to see continue.

Named Gifts My husband, Lou Williams, and I discovered Birch Creek much as we discovered so many other treasures of Door County. A friend recommended that we attend a concert on a steamy summer evening. We loved the whole experience of listening to Big Band music in the historic Dutton Barn.

In time, we got engaged again with Birch Creek. I had just retired from my job in downtown Chicago. Lou had retired a few years earlier. We were both looking for a meaningful commitment as we transitioned into retirement. He found his creative outlet in becoming a wood turner. I answered a call to serve on Birch Creek’s Board of Trustees. That led to a truly fascinating six-year journey as a board member.

I watched the organization blossom and rise to meet Mary Moster enjoys the 2018 Valentine’s Day challenge after challenge. Most gratifying was to watch the Concert in Juniper Hall. students grow and blossom in their performances from one summer to the next and to see the energy and dedication of the faculty. We had such fun inviting friends to concerts where everyone left with big smiles, tapping toes and happy hearts. That made it an easy decision to become members of the Legacy Circle in 2017. When Lou passed away later that year, it was with all these memories top of mind that I made the decision to name a cello chair in the endowment as a lasting memory to the wonderful times we spent at Birch Creek. It’s been a privilege to be a part of this great organization.

Birch Creek Administration Mona Christensen

Executive Director

Mona Christensen came to Birch Creek in 2015 after 27 years at UW-Green Bay as the Director of Camps and Conferences. Her lifelong administrative vision engages leadership, faculty, staff, and volunteers to serve students of all ages, from youth to senior citizens. She is experienced in meeting the educational needs of musicians and students, as well as implementing and improving technologies needed to operate a music education program. Mona holds a music degree and a Master of Science degree in administrative science-management. She is a flautist who taught flute privately for 20 years. In addition, she was the Ministries Director for five years at a megachurch in Green Bay and has performed in several community and church bands, flute choirs and orchestras.

Kristen Johnson

Assistant Executive Director

Kristen Johnson brings 20 years of non-profit leadership experience to the new position of Assistant Executive Director at Birch Creek, helping carry forward Birch Creek’s mission. She earned a degree in business administration with honors from Trinity International University. Through the Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management at Northwestern University, she received two certificates: Resource Development and Marketing/Communication. Kristen is skilled in management and communication within organizations that serve her community.

Michelle Naese

Office and Registration Manager

Michelle started with Birch Creek in 2015 as Administrative and Office Support Assistant and she is currently the Academy’s Registrar and Office Manager. She holds an Administrative Professional Associate Degree from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College–Green Bay. Michelle has 10 years of experience as a law office clerk. A musician herself, she played the trumpet throughout middle school and high school.

Camille Orgel

Operations Assistant

Camille joins the staff at Birch Creek as the Operations Assistant. She brings to Birch Creek over seven years of experience with large scale project and team management, budget creation and oversight, and creative problem solving in the entertainment/ advertising industries. Her roles have ranged from production assistant and production coordinator to producer working with clients such as Disney, TaylorMade, Marvel, and the NFL, among others. As a member of professional teams, her work has won Clio Entertainment awards and a Golden Trailer award. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Media with a Concentration in Multimedia Production.

Grants and Development Manager

Kate is an arts educator with experience in a variety of environments including public and private education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Education Degree with a minor in English and has completed postgraduate courses in arts education and professional fund raising. Kate served her local and state communities through board leadership, arts advocacy, grant writing guidance, and as a grant review panelist for competitive grant programs. She has been with Birch Creek since 2005.

Laura Smith

Marketing Manager

Laura Smith joins the Birch Creek Staff with six years of marketing experience in the jewelry insurance industry. Her past work also includes a 15-year career as a TV news reporter and anchor serving Northeast Wisconsin. She is experienced in building relationships, communicating with people, video production and photography. She holds degrees in Broadcast Journalism and Communication Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Bob Volpe

Facilities Manager

Bob Volpe joins the Birch Creek staff with several years of maintenance experience in the villages of Sister Bay, Ephraim and at Fish Creek Condos. While in the US Navy/Naval Reserve he developed technical training materials for operations and maintenance, along with managing budgets, personnel training and oversaw day to day operations. Bob is a local volunteer firefighter and emergency medical responder. He has a degree in Computer Information Systems.

The Birch Creek Associates

Concessions moved outdoors in 2021 and Associates take a brief break before the arrival of a sold-out audience for the July 4th celebration concert.

Our dedicated volunteers—known as The Associates— are the friendly faces you see greeting you around campus and are an integral part of Birch Creek’s success. For 30 years, this group of volunteers has helped with fundraising, concert nights, handing out programs, staffing the gift shop, preparing the campus for students, faculty and visitors, assisting with registration, gardening, housekeeping, and office work. In a typical season, members provide more than 3,000 hours of service. The Associates have raised more than $400,000 for scholarships, equipment purchases and capital projects.
