Welcome to Birch Creek Welcome back to Birch Creek Music Performance Center! It has been a long, unusual year for all of us. We have really missed the activity and sound of music on campus here at Birch Creek. But thanks to your continued support throughout the pandemic, we are back and we are so glad that you are here with us!

It has been a challenge working to come up with the safest way to provide a quality learning environment for our students as well as offer an enjoyable music experience for you, our patrons.

Our staff and music directors have done an outstanding job of developing what we believe will be a great comeback season for all of us. It may look or feel a little bit different, but that unforgettable Birch Creek sound will still be here.

letter from the executive director Dear friends and music lovers, Welcome to Birch Creek! Thank you for joining us today!

Considering all that the world has gone through this past year, and what we continue to go through as we emerge from public health advisories and the inability to gather, this season affirmed what we knew all along…music is essential. We all need the creative expression of the soul. In this reopening year, the Birch Creek family—staff, board, faculty, students, parents, donors, patrons and volunteers—has committed to this season’s modified emergence. With a deep hunger for the melodies and aesthetic expression that connects us, we are fully committed to a one-of-a-kind season! What have we learned? Music makes a way!

You may recall the abrupt change of direction Birch Creek made last May. Within six weeks of announcing that we had to cancel our onsite programming for the season, we developed and launched Birch Creek Online. Our stellar and experienced program directors, Dan Moore, Ricardo Castañeda and Jeff Campbell, connected with students and faculty from all over the country in weeklong, online sessions.

Fulfilling our mission is always at the forefront of our initiatives. Our faculty and students know that Birch Creek is the place where they can reunite with colleagues and friends to display their commitment to performance-based music education. Serious music students cannot stop learning and performing. They search out ways to develop their skills and they find mentors to encourage them. These amazing young people have not only hung on, but thrived during these challenging and uncertain times. Especially this summer, Birch Creek students truly are our champions! Music makes a way!

You are helping us to create an environment of health and safety for all. Thank you for practicing social distancing to keep our living and performing environment safe for Birch Creek students and faculty. Thank you for adhering to our safety protocols. For us to safely celebrate our students and faculty in concerts throughout this reopening season, it is imperative that we all work together.

A Birch Creek Timeline

1975

1976

Birch Creek Founders Jim and Fran Dutton purchase the A-frame on County E across from the current campus.

The Duttons begin a music school in their A-frame home with 12 students. The A-frame is also the site of the first public concert. That winter, the 19th century farmstead that is Birch Creek’s home was purchased from the Tischler family of Baileys Harbor.

1977 - 1986 1977 The Granary is renovated for use as a student dorm, the barn for performances. First performance held in the barn.

1978 Student enrollment is 53; 11 concerts are performed over a 5-week session.

1979 Enrollment is 103, and faculty includes Russell Dagon, principal clarinetist with the Milwaukee Symphony, marimbist Gordon Stout and Lovell Ives, both of the UW–Green Bay jazz program.

1980 Twenty-two concerts are performed in a full summer season including four free Sunday family matinée concerts.

1982 G. Allan O’Connor from Northern Illinois University begins the Steel Band program at Birch Creek; enrollment is 143, concert attendance 3,950.

1984 A new dormitory capable of housing 38 students and 6 faculty is built.

1986 Birch Creek’s 10th anniversary is celebrated with performances by Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra conducted by Buddy Morrow.

1988 - 1998 1988 The Birch Creek Associates volunteer organization is formed.

1990 The Picnic Grove is planted and the Gazebo is built by the Associates.

1991 Popcorn has its debut as a scholarship fundraiser.

1992 Birch Creek management passes to a reorganized Board of Trustees after the campus is purchased from the Duttons.

1994 A new administration building and a faculty dorm are built.

1995 20th Anniversary celebration includes dedication of the James N. Dutton Concert Barn.

1998 A new kitchen/dining room is added to the Student Dorm. Student enrollment is 178; overall concert attendance exceeds 9,000.

1999 - 2003 1999 A new music library is begun in the farmhouse. Jazz pianist Marian McPartland continues the tradition of great guest artists at Birch Creek. The Jazz Ambassadors band is formed as part of Birch Creek’s outreach program.

Jim Dutton passes away.

2000 Birch Creek celebrates its 25th season, welcoming guest artists Peter Schickele, Gene Bertoncini, Harold Jones and Freddy Cole.

2001 A piano lab, new popcorn stand and gift shop make their campus debut.

2002 The Associates Bench Project begins. Stage extension is added to accommodate growing ensemble of student performers. The Dutton Concert Barn gets a new roof.

2003 The Farmhouse undergoes major refurbishment.

2004 - 2009 2004 Clifford Alexis, world-renowned steel pan builder and tuner, performs masterclasses for students and concerts for audiences.

2005 Birch Creek celebrates its 30th season.

2007 Perfect Pitch Capital Campaign to add three new buildings begins on opening night.

2008 The new Rehearsal Center, Faculty Dormitory and Maintenance Facility are completed and dedicated on June 30, effectively doubling Birch Creek’s footprint.

2009 Perfect Pitch reaches 90% of its $3M goal. The new year-round facilities are utilized by community groups during the winter months.

2010 - 2017 2010 To close out the Capital Campaign, the Final Pitch campaign is launched.

2011 “Jazz at Birch Creek” is recorded by Wisconsin Public Television in August and airs in 2012 throughout Wisconsin and in Rochester, NY. 2014 The Final Pitch campaign concludes.

The Associates’ new concession stand in the East Granary opens in celebration of their 25th anniversary. Wisconsin Public Television records Symphony and Percussion & Steel Band sessions for broadcast in 2015.

2015 Birch Creek celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Fall Concert Series is introduced.

2016 The Dutton Concert Barn’s South Wall is replaced and a new infrastructure plan begins.

2017 New electrical service to the west campus and an improved campus water filtration system were completed; the barn received lightning protection and new stage lighting.

2018 - 2020 2018 Adult Band Camp returns for second year. Phase III of the Infrastructure and Technology Plan is completed as office systems are moved to the Cloud.

2019 Chamber Music Retreat for adults is offered for the first time in August.

Dutton Concert Barn stage is named “Stage of Stars” and the gazebo is named by Jackie and Steve Kane.

2020 COVID-19 pandemic causes Academy sessions and all summer concerts to be cancelled. Office staff work from home and Birch Creek Online is launched.

Percussion & Steel Band Dan Moore Program Director Dan Moore is in his 23rd year as a Birch Creek faculty member and has served as Director of the Percussion & Steel Band Program since 2016. Dr. Moore is Professor of Percussion and Director of the award-winning percussion program at The University of Iowa where he recently received the Iowa Regents Award for Faculty Excellence. Moore is an internationally known musician, composer, and educator. He is a Yamaha international performing artist, a signature mallet artist for Innovative Percussion, and a performing artist for Sabian Cymbals, Gon Bops Percussion, and Grover Pro Percussion. His music is published by Row-Loff Productions, Innovative Percussion, Alfred Publishing, and Cricket City Music and Media. At Birch Creek, Moore leads the faculty ensemble and teaches marimba/vibes performance, improvisation, leadership, snare drum technique, ensemble performance, and musicianship.

Liam Teague Steel Band Director This year marks Liam Teague’s 26th season with Birch Creek and his seventh as Steel Band Director. Teague is Professor of Music and Head of Steelpan studies at Northern Illinois University (NIU), where he also directs the renowned NIU Steelband. He is also the recipient of an NIU Presidential Research, Scholarship and Artistry Professor Award. His commitment to demonstrating the great musical possibilities of the steelpan has taken him throughout the world, and he has received many awards from his homeland of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Humming Bird National Award (Silver) and the Ansa McAl Caribbean Award for Excellence. Teague has also performed with many diverse ensembles which include: National Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony, Czech National Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, Panama National Symphony and Chicago Sinfonietta. He has appeared in concert with GrammyAward winning musicians Paquito D’Rivera, Dave Samuels, Zakir Hussain and Dame Evelyn Glennie.

Teague serves as arranger for the Nutrien Silver Stars Steel Orchestra at Panorama (the most celebrated steelband competition in the world).

Symphony Faculty Ricardo Castañeda

Program Director, Sarah H. Wright Chair

2021 marks Ricardo Castañeda’s 24th year at Birch Creek. Castañeda received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music performance from Northwestern University, where he was a student of Ray Still, former Principal Oboist of The Chicago Symphony. He is a winner of the Northwestern University Concerto Competition and a recipient of the Wade Fetzer award for excellence in performance. Having made his solo debut with the National Symphony of El Salvador at age fifteen, he has since appeared as a soloist in Latin America, Europe, the United States and more recently Japan.

Castañeda is currently Principal Oboist with the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Sinfonietta, and solo English Horn with The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a member of the Chicago Ensemble and Barossa Woodwind Quintet. Previous positions include Principal Oboist with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, Elgin Symphony Orchestra and solo English Horn with the Mexico City Philharmonic. An active freelance musician, Castañeda enjoys performing all genres of music. He has played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera Orchestra, Grant Park Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Opera Theater and has been principal oboist for orchestras for The Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theater, and Joffrey Ballet as well as numerous Broadway in Chicago shows.

Benjamin Firer Guest Conductor An award-winning conductor, Benjamin Firer is active throughout the Chicago area. He holds conducting positions at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras and Lewis University. Firer received his Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University and a Master’s Degree from Yale University. As an orchestral musician he has recorded for the Naxos and Albany labels.

Firer has made appearances with the symphony orchestras of ChampaignUrbana, Dubuque, DuPage, Miami, Fargo-Morehead, Orchestra de la Francophonie, Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra, Northwestern University Opera Theatre, Alice Millar Brass Ensemble, and New Music New Haven.

Recognized for his musical entrepreneurship, he was granted the SUNY Thayer Fellowship in the Arts and the Emma Peters Hooper Endowed Award. Firer was selected as an Emerging Conductor with the Peninsula Music Festival and as the conducting fellow for the Atlantic Music Festival. He has garnered awards including The American Prize in Conducting, The Woolsey Concerto Competition, Yale Chamber Music Competition, Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship, and the Long Island University Conductors Award.

Symphony Faculty Marcia Henry Liebenow

Concertmaster, Charlotte Lukes Chair

Marcia Henry Liebenow is Concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and teaches violin, viola and chamber music at Bradley University. She leads a multi-faceted career as a teacher, recitalist, chamber musician, and soloist across the U.S. and abroad. She is a member of the Concordia String Trio and Peoria Lunaire, a new music ensemble. In the summer, in addition to Birch Creek, Marcia is a faculty artist at the Red Lodge Music Festival in Montana, and has performed and taught at festivals in Italy, Alaska, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, and Vermont. She has three CDs on the Centaur label - the Grieg Violin Sonatas with internationally acclaimed pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi, and two Concordia String Trio CDs — American Vistas and Viennese String Trios. Her work has been recognized with the Outstanding Studio Teacher Award from Illinois ASTA, and she was named a Distinguished Alumni of Ohio University School of Music. Marcia earned degrees in Violin Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and Ohio University. 2021 marks her 23rd year at Birch Creek.

Big Band Jazz Faculty Jeff Campbell Program Director and Academy Jazz Orchestra Director, Jazz I & II 2021 is Jeff Campbell’s 33rd year at Birch Creek and his 25th as Jazz Program Director. Dr. Campbell is Professor of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media and department chair at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY. He has carved out an impressive career as a bass player fluent in both the jazz and classical idioms. As a jazz bassist, Campbell has performed with Marian McPartland, Gene Bertoncini, Rich Perry, Trio East, Harold Jones, and the Eastman Jazz Quartet featuring Harold Danko. In high demand across the globe, he has performed at such prestigious European musical events as the Nice, Montreux, North Sea, Riga, and Parnu jazz festivals and has also appeared in the former Soviet Union and the Baltic Republics. Additionally, Campbell is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra bass section. He has numerous CDs to his credit.

Jazz I Faculty Gil Wukitsch Student Band Director Gil Wukitsch has been teaching at St. Charles East High School since 1997, where he teaches Jazz Band, Wind Symphony and AP Music Theory. Along with his teaching duties, Gil serves as the Lead Teacher for Fine Arts, overseeing the Drama, Music and Visual Arts departments. Wukitsch has a degree in music education from DePaul University, as well as a Masters in Educational Leadership from Aurora University. While at DePaul, he was a member of the nationally recognized Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra, and studied trumpet with Ross Beacraft and Bob Lark. Gil began attending Birch Creek as a student in 1989 and since then has been a member of the Academy Big Band as both a teaching assistant and faculty member, as well as serving as the Lab Band and Studio Band Director.

Jazz II Faculty Phillip Crews Student Band Director Phillip Crews received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the VanderCook College of Music, Chicago, IL. He directed the band programs at Thornton High School and is starting his 18th year as band director at Rich Central High School.

Crews was recognized in 2009 for excellence in teaching by the Illinois State Board of Education receiving the “Those Who Excel” award and was honored with the Mary Hoffman Award of Excellence in recognition of teaching excellence in music education at the 2018 Illinois Music Education Conference. He was inducted into Phi Beta Mu, the International Bandmasters Fraternity in 2017. Crews was a Birch Creek student in 1989 and is joining us for an 8th season as a faculty member.

Birch Creek Online During the summer of 2020, Birch Creek faculty transformed on-campus program rehearsals, masterclasses and lessons into virtual experiences that combined the joy and intensity of the Birch Creek campus setting with an interactive experience of summer music instruction. Led by Birch Creek’s Program Directors, music students from across the country zoomed with faculty and fellow students at Birch Creek Online sessions in Percussion & Steel Band, Symphony and Big Band Jazz. These creative sessions were made possible by generous donors Joan Guasta and MMG Foundation.

The students of Birch Creek Online’s academy sessions attended daily classes, demonstrations and performances during one-week sessions of Percussion & Steel Band, Symphony and (2) Big Band Jazz.

Fall and Spring Studio Sessions Whether you are a music student preparing for a musical career or a community band or orchestra member wanting to learn more, Birch Creek’s Studio Sessions extend music education beyond its summer sessions. These one-hour instructional Zoom sessions are tailored for today’s student & adult musicians and are taught by Birch Creek’s nationally and internationally known professional musicians.

Past students from all over the country enjoyed camaraderie with like-minded musicians and access to our beloved faculty for a very small fee. Studio Sessions will be scheduled this Fall and Spring. Stay tuned to our website for details.

2020 Student Awards The Birch Creek Student Awards are presented at the end of each two-week session and are based on musicianship and leadership. Due to the cancellation of the 2020 Academy season, 2019 award recipients have been invited to return for the 2021 season. Additionally, Birch Creek Online’s Symphony Session held the 2020 Burton Concerto Competition and selected two winners. The two first-place winners of the 2020 Concerto Competition are eligible to perform one movement of a concerto on opening night of the following season. In the event that the first-place winner cannot perform, the runner-up or honorable mention is eligible for the honor.

Robert Everson

Robert Everson is the timpanist with several orchestras in the Chicago area, including the Chicago Philharmonic, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, the Lake Forest Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, and the Joffrey Ballet Orchestra. He has also performed as an extra with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Grant Park Symphony and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has played with dozens of pop artists, including Celine Dion, Harry Belafonte, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, the Moody Blues, Andrea Bocelli, Aretha Franklin and Art Garfunkel, and for many Broadway shows, commercial jingles and TV broadcasts.

Everson earned his Bachelor and Master degrees in Percussion Performance from DePaul University and is the percussion instructor at Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois. He has been a Birch Creek faculty member and performer in the Birch Creek Symphony Orchestra since 2001.

Steve Horne

Steve Horne‘s career as a trombonist includes working with some of the world’s most renowned entertainers. He grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and went on to study with John Marcellus at Catholic University of America, and continued his studies at North Texas State University. He spent 15 years in Las Vegas where he was the lead trombonist for Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Johnny Mathis, Ray Charles, Julio Iglesias, Natalie Cole, Burt Bacharach, Liza Minelli, Lido de Paris, televised telethons, HBO specials, Las Vegas Symphony, Opera, and many more. Horne is a freelance musician performing at venues in and around Chicago. He maintains a private teaching studio at his home in Glenview, Illinois, as well as at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois and Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois. Horne has been a faculty member and performer in the Birch Creek Jazz II Orchestra since 2001.

Alan Steiner

Alan Steiner is a former member of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, L’Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec and the Canadian Opera Company.

He was a soloist in the world premiere of Likht un Shotn with the Park Ridge Civic Orchestra.

He maintains a private studio and teaches at A.E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois.

Steiner has been a Birch Creek faculty member and performer in the Birch Creek Symphony Orchestra since 2001.

Bob Chmel

Bob Chmel graduated from Kent State University with a B.S. in education and a M.A. in performance. Chmel was awarded Alumni of the Year by Kent State in 2003. He is currently performing with The Nevada Pops.

“Las Vegas drummer Bob Chmel, a drummer for Frank Sinatra, Jr., worked the drum kit effortlessly. Thanks to him, the audience was not only treated to memories of great singers, but they were also reminded of drumming greats like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. The perfect mix of precision and fun, Chmel was a joy to watch and exciting to listen to.” - Deseret News concert review, 2012 Chmel has been a Birch Creek faculty member, performer and historian in the Birch Creek Jazz I Orchestra since 1991.

Gil Wukitsch

Gil Wukitsch has been teaching at St. Charles East High School since 1997, where he teaches Jazz Band, Wind Symphony and AP Music Theory. Along with his teaching duties, Wukitsch serves as the Lead Teacher for Fine Arts, overseeing the Drama, Music and Visual Arts departments. He has a degree in music education from DePaul University, as well as a Masters in Educational Leadership from Aurora University. While at DePaul, he was a member of the nationally recognized Jazz Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra, and studied trumpet with Ross Beacraft and Bob Lark. Wukitsch began attending Birch Creek as a student in 1989. Since then, he has been a performer with the Birch Creek Jazz I Orchestra, a teaching assistant and faculty member, as well as serving as the Lab Band and Studio Band Director.

Artists in the Schools / Community Outreach Birch Creek’s Artists in the Schools outreach program (AIS) brings nationally acclaimed Birch Creek faculty members back to Door County after the summer performances have concluded to serve as clinicians for Door County public school music students.

Faculty members offer powerful insights into music practice and performance and, through hands-on teaching, demonstrate techniques that are immediately applied in the classroom.

The first Artists in the Schools was launched in 2002 and featured Liam Teague and Robert Chappel from the Percussion & Steel Band Session. AIS was established with the support of a grant from the Peninsula Arts Association and has continued as a Birch Creek outreach program each year since then. Artists in the Schools is now underwritten by a grant from The Skinner Family Fund of the Door County Community Foundation. The program continues to bring nationally-recognized musicians into Door County schools for hands-on workshops.

The Birch Creek Campus Birch Creek continued to move forward with Infrastructure and Technology planning in the past year, now in PHASE VI of implementation. To reopen the campus for face-to-face learning, we coordinated the highest safety conditions for students, faculty, staff and audiences, beginning with healthy air quality inside buildings on campus. The “Safer Air Initiative” added UV upgrades to HVAC systems in Miller Music Center, added ducted ventilation to the first and second floors of the West Dorm, and employed natural methods (doors and windows) to take advantage of fresh air and light winds…including moving concerts outdoors.

New windows were installed on the north and south sides of the West Dorm to increase natural light and air flow throughout the student dormitory.

The systems/upgrades helped provide effective solutions that could not have been completed without the help of donors who believe in Birch Creek. Shade awnings (sails) and a sound mixer will help concertgoers enjoy outdoor concerts. The addition of Wi-Fi to housing south of the West Dorm will broaden internet access for our summer staff.

Campus views were opened up from inside the West Dorm with the addition of new windows.

For grants given to assist us in reopening, we thank the following: Dwight and Linda Davis Foundation Duct work sections were pre-assembled prior to installation for 2nd floor ventilation upgrades in the West Dorm building.

Passing Tones In Loving Memory of Kaye M. Wagner 1952 – 2021 The song is ended, but the melody lingers on. ~ Irving Berlin Measures of Influence Birch Creek’s first Executive Director, Kaye M. Wagner, died unexpectedly while en route from Tucson, AZ to her beloved home in Baileys Harbor, WI on April 30, 2021. Kaye was named Birch Creek’s Executive Director in 1998 and retired in 2012.

Under Kaye’s leadership, Birch Creek established Artists in the Schools outreach program and the Birch Creek Endowment. She guided the Perfect Pitch capital campaign and construction of three new campus buildings that added faculty housing, a second concert hall, a new student dorm, a maintenance facility, plus increased rehearsal, practice, and meeting spaces. Her 14 years at Birch Creek were marked by many accomplishments which continue to benefit today’s students, faculty, concertgoers and staff.

Kaye’s Birch Creek legacy includes the commission and world premiere of Concertino for Tenor Steel Drum and Chamber Orchestra by Libby Larsen; rebroadcast of Symphony Session performance highlights by Wisconsin Public Radio from 2001 through 2005; the production of 25th and 30th October 2007, l to r: Board members Lolly anniversaries CDs; and the live production of Jazz at Birch Ratajczak, Jon Kordon, and Charlotte Lukes with staff Lyn Huber (Operations Manager), Creek in 2011 by Wisconsin Public Television. Guest artist Kaye and Campaign Honorary Chairpersons residencies during her tenure included Marian McPartland, Dave and Vonnie Callsen to break ground for Peter Schickele, Freddy Cole, the Brubeck Brothers Quartet, the new buildings which opened in June 2008. and Woody Herman. She introduced every concert, attended picnics, ice cream socials, Board and Associates meetings, and special fundraising events.

After retirement, Kaye continued to attend Birch Creek concerts and keep affectionate and steadfast relationships with Birch Creek’s program directors and performing faculty.

Kaye had a successful career as a musician, educator and arts administrator from Colorado Springs to New York before becoming fully grounded at Birch Creek. Once in Door County, she continued teaching flute privately. Birch Creek benefited from her administrative and educational experience as they transitioned from a small to a large music performance and education organization.

Above all, Kaye loved Birch Creek. She was caretaker of the integrity, professionalism and rich history of the place and will be missed by those whose lives she touched at Birch Creek and beyond. We share our heartfelt condolences with Kaye’s family and friends.

I

n 2007, when we had both retired and moved to Door County, we attended our first Birch Creek concert as curious music fans of big band music; we were enthralled.

In the summer of 2008, our neighbors invited us to come with them to a meeting of the Birch Creek Associates and learn about volunteering opportunities. We were hooked.

The popcorn stand became our “thing” and Bob Koehler, our mentor. It was the perfect alignment of our passion for music, education and young people. Our volunteer commitment continued to grow. Birch Creek was the place we made new friends who shared the same interests and commitment.

A few years later another of our neighbors introduced Sam to the idea of volunteering for a subcommittee that led to an invitation to join the board. Music education was formational for both of us. The importance of ensuring that future generations could have the opportunity to have their lives shaped by music as ours had been is so important to us. What better way to do it than becoming members of Birch Creek’s Legacy Circle?

We love being able to be a small part of carrying on the vision of Jim and Fran Dutton, transforming lives.

The Erickson Listening Library in the Historic Farmhouse

In Birch Creek’s early years, Miriam and Howard Erickson attended concerts and volunteered as a team. After Howard passed away in 2004, Miriam carried on their tradition of philanthropy as a Trustee and President of the Board of Trustees, a member of the Associates, a Legacy Circle member, and through her endowment chair. On concert nights, Miriam brought her many friends and family to marvel, as she does, at Birch Creek’s excellence in music education. The Erickson Listening Library honors this devotion to learning and Miriam’s lifelong career as an educator and media specialist.

Annual Giving at Birch Creek Play It Forward Annual Fund The Play It Forward Annual Fund is used for operational expenses and bridges the gap between tuition paid by families and the true cost of program delivery. See page 28 for more details.

Annual Scholarships Scholarship donations provide sustaining, continuing tuition support enabling Birch Creek to recruit promising young musicians, encourage students to return in following years, and, for some families, remove barriers to a Birch Creek education that tuition imposes. Birch Creek Administration Mona Christensen

Executive Director

Mona Christensen came to Birch Creek in 2015 after 27 years at UW-Green Bay as the Director of Camps and Conferences. In addition, for five years she was the Ministries Director at a mega church in Green Bay. Her lifelong administrative work engaged administration, faculty, staff and volunteers to serve students of all ages, from youth to senior citizen clientele. She is experienced in meeting the educational needs of musicians and students, as well as technologies needed to operate a music education program. Mona holds a music degree and a Master of Science degree in administrative science-management. She is a flautist who taught flute privately for 20 years. In addition, she has performed in a number of community and church bands, flute choirs and orchestras.

Jim DuFrane

Facilities Manager

Jim DuFrane became Birch Creek’s Facilities Manager in January 2018. Jim’s skills in repairing, restoring and creating nearly anything come from his work experience as a machinist, cabinet maker, carpenter, signmaker and glass artist. He worked at Mid-States Aluminum and FZE Manufacturing in Fond du Lac and at Palmer Johnson in Sturgeon Bay before opening and operating his glassworks gallery, G&J Glassworks, on Madison Avenue in Sturgeon Bay from 2010-2018.

Emily Maher

Marketing Manager

Emily joined Birch Creek in September 2017 and brings a background in marketing, advertising and business administration. Her work experience includes Associate Director of Corporate Communications for a real estate investment/development company and Creative Services Director for an ad agency in Chicago. Since moving to Door County in 2004, Emily has held positions as the Programs Director at the Peninsula School of Art and Office Manager for On Deck Clothing Company. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in business combined with fine arts studies.

Michelle Naese

Office and Registration Manager

Michelle started with Birch Creek in 2015 as Administrative and Office Support Assistant and she is currently the Academy’s Registrar and Office Manager. She holds an Administrative Professional Associate Degree from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College–Green Bay. Michelle has 10 years experience as a law office clerk. A musician herself, she played the trumpet throughout middle school and high school.

Amy Phillips

Business Manager

Amy Phillips joined Birch Creek in October 2019 as Business Manager and brings with her a background in finance. After earning a degree in accounting from Madison Area Technical College, Amy worked as Financial Specialist for the University of Wisconsin system at both the UW-Baraboo/Sauk County and UWRock campuses. Since moving to Door County, Amy has held positions in health information management for CIOX Corporation as well as Business Manager for the Sturgeon Bay Boys & Girls Club.

Grants and Development Manager

Kate is an arts educator with experience in a variety of environments including public and private education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Education degree from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh with a minor in English, and has completed a course in Fund Raising for the Professional from the Lilly Family School for Philanthropy. Kate serves her local and state communities through board leadership, arts advocacy and as a panelist for grant reviews. She has been with Birch Creek since 2005.

The Birch Creek Associates

Concession Stand Volunteers make popcorn and sell beverages, cookies, CDs and Birch Creek merchandise from the renovated Granary (one of the original farm buildings on the Birch Creek campus).

Our dedicated volunteers—known as The Associates— are the friendly faces you see greeting you around campus and are an integral part of Birch Creek’s success. For 30 years, this group of volunteers has helped with fundraising, concert nights, handing out programs, staffing the gift shop, preparing the campus for students, faculty and visitors, assisting with registration, gardening, housekeeping, and office work.

In a typical season, members provide more than 3,000 hours of service. The Associates have raised more than $400,000 for scholarships, equipment purchases and capital projects.
