letter from the executive director Dear friends and music lovers, Just like you, we will never forget the summer of 2020! Though it may seem like a season of pause for many, it isn’t so for Birch Creek. Amidst the heartache of needing to cancel our summer residential academy season due to COVID-19, we are inspired by the opportunity to develop new online programming that will engage our students with our world-class faculty. It is a time to reflect on the importance of Birch Creek’s mission and adjust our methods to bring a taste of Birch Creek’s signature model of instruction to our talented, bright and eager musicians. Time and circumstances will tell if we will be able to offer our adult programming, e.g. the Adult Band Camp and the Adult Chamber Music Retreat in August. We are hopeful and planning to offer our Fall Concert Series, featuring our beloved faculty on Saturdays starting on Labor Day weekend, September 5, and culminating with our highly popular Christmas concerts on December 5. Stay tuned to our website, birchcreek.org/ covid-19 for season updates. As a musician myself, my absolute favorite thing in the world is to hear music in the air emanating from our buildings, practice rooms, and outside areas. It takes me back to music school! Now, as I walk through the campus alone, this quiet idyllic gem is yearning for your return…students & parents, faculty, donors, sponsors, advertisers, concert goers, volunteers and staff. Remembering the hearty applause and moments of awe and sweet harmonies takes us back to normal times when greetings were met with handshakes, hugs and smiles. Birch Creek is a family, and you are part of it! We miss you and want you to know that we need you during this unprecedented time in our history. Birch Creek Strong is the name of our “forward together” campaign to help us recover from unprecedented revenue shortfalls from closing the academy—and sustain Birch Creek as we move forward through the immediate season and into the new year. Our goal is to start 2021 stronger than ever. We begin building Birch Creek recruiting and registration systems months ahead of December 1, when our online registration form ‘goes live,’ so that we are ready to receive and process applications when registration opens. For us to draw students from across the country and internationally, we must invest in the registration and recruitment phases in order to attract the highly talented students we need to fill our ensembles for 2021. All of this adds up to keeping our permanent staff of six employed, to keeping communications with parents, teachers, donors and community members flowing, and to maintain our historic nine-building campus. Would you help us by investing in Birch Creek Strong during this season? Would you make a donation? Instead of buying tickets, would you donate their value? Instead of sponsoring a concert, would you sponsor our new online educational endeavor? Instead of advertising, would you donate those funds for operational support? We need you more than ever! Though you won’t be here with us for this summer concert season, would you help us be future thinking for the 2021 season? Please help us be Birch Creek Strong! Musically yours, Mona Christensen, Executive Director The Steve and Jackie Kane Chair

Birch Creek Mission Statement To provide intensive, performance-based instruction to promising young musicians by immersing them in a professional, mentoring environment.
From the President of the Birch Creek Board of Trustees When I think of Birch Creek’s early years in the late 1970s, I remember Jim Dutton standing in the driveway of our resort. He was talking and laughing with my husband, Howard…and fundraising. In those early years, Jim invited us to support a young, artistic, educational organization that grew to have a place of importance in our community…and in our family. I always loved the multi-generational involvement at Birch Creek, which can be seen in my own family. It makes Birch Creek a true part of the Door County community. The summer of 2020 will be different. But the quiet summer stage cannot change your support for Birch Creek. Your giving can hopefully be enhanced this year to help us overcome the unusual circumstances that we find ourselves in with the cancellation of our academy and concerts. Because of your support, Birch Creek will continue to flourish. It has become a unique and vital part of the outstanding arts community in Door County. I’m proud to be part of it.

A Birch Creek Timeline
1975
1976
Birch Creek Founders Jim and Fran Dutton purchase the A-frame on County E across from the current campus.
The Duttons begin a music school in their A-frame home with 12 students. The A-frame is also the site of the first public concert. That winter, the 19th century farmstead that is Birch Creek’s home was purchased from the Tischler family of Baileys Harbor.
1977 - 1986 1977 The Granary is renovated for use as a student dorm, the barn for performances. First performance held in the barn. 1978 Student enrollment is 53; 11 concerts are performed over a 5-week session. 1979 Enrollment is 103, and faculty includes Russell Dagon, principal clarinetist with the Milwaukee Symphony, marimbist Gordon Stout and Lovell Ives, both of the UW–Green Bay jazz program. 1980 Twenty-two concerts are performed in a full summer season including four free Sunday family matinée concerts. 1982 G. Allan O’Connor from Northern Illinois University begins the Steel Band program at Birch Creek; enrollment is 143, concert attendance 3,950. 1984 A new dormitory capable of housing 38 students and 6 faculty is built. 1986 Birch Creek’s 10th anniversary is celebrated with performances by Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra conducted by Buddy Morrow.
1988 - 1998 1988 The Birch Creek Associates volunteer organization is formed. 1990 The Picnic Grove is planted and the Gazebo is built by the Associates. 1991 Popcorn has its debut as a scholarship fundraiser. 1992 Birch Creek management passes to a reorganized Board of Trustees after the campus is purchased from the Duttons. 1994 A new administration building and a faculty dorm are built. 1995 20th Anniversary celebration includes dedication of the James N. Dutton Concert Barn. 1998 A new kitchen/dining room is added to the Student Dorm. Student enrollment is 178; overall concert attendance exceeds 9,000.
6
1999 - 2003 1999 A new music library is begun in the farmhouse. Jazz pianist Marian McPartland continues the tradition of great guest artists at Birch Creek. The Jazz Ambassadors band is formed as part of Birch Creek’s outreach program. Jim Dutton passes away. 2000 Birch Creek celebrates its 25th season, welcoming guest artists Peter Schickele, Gene Bertoncini, Harold Jones and Freddy Cole. 2001 A piano lab, new popcorn stand and gift shop make their campus debut. 2002 The Associates Bench Project begins. Stage extension is added to accommodate growing ensemble of student performers. The Dutton Concert Barn gets a new roof. 2003 The Farmhouse undergoes major refurbishment.
2004 - 2009 2004 Clifford Alexis, world-renowned steel pan builder and tuner, performs masterclasses for students and concerts for audiences. 2005 Birch Creek celebrates its 30th season. 2007 Perfect Pitch Capital Campaign to add three new buildings begins on opening night. 2008 The new Rehearsal Center, Faculty Dormitory and Maintenance Facility are completed and dedicated on June 30, effectively doubling Birch Creek’s footprint. 2009 Perfect Pitch reaches 90% of its $3M goal. The new year-round facilities are utilized by community groups during the winter months.
2010 - 2017 2010 To close out the Capital Campaign, the Final Pitch campaign is launched. 2011 “Jazz at Birch Creek” is recorded by Wisconsin Public Television in August and airs in 2012 throughout Wisconsin and in Rochester, NY. 2014 The Final Pitch campaign concludes. The Associates’ new concession stand in the East Granary opens in celebration of their 25th anniversary. Wisconsin Public Television records Symphony and Percussion & Steel Band sessions for broadcast in 2015. 2015 Birch Creek celebrates its 40th anniversary. The Fall Concert Series is introduced. 2016 The Dutton Concert Barn’s South Wall is replaced and a new infrastructure plan begins. 2017 New electrical service to the west campus and an improved campus water filtration system were completed; the barn received lightning protection and new stage lighting.
2018 - 2020 2018 Adult Band Camp returns for second year. Phase III of the Infrastructure and Technology Plan is completed as office systems are moved to the Cloud. 2019 Chamber Music Retreat for adults is offered for the first time in August. Dutton Concert Barn stage is named “Stage of Stars” and the gazebo is named by Jackie and Steve Kane. 2020 COVID-19 pandemic causes Academy sessions and summer concerts to be cancelled. Office staff work from home and Birch Creek Online is launched.

Artists in the Schools - October 2019 “Thank you so much for bringing us the Artist in the Schools series. Our students were inspired by the fabulous music and encouraged to hear that they could make mistakes in practice and grow from them. Our students are now inspired to practice. Our students loved the experience!!! What a treat it was to have Rick, Reggie and Jeff. It is awesome to see friends make music and use their sense of humor in their music. We are ever so grateful for this opportunity for our band, choir and general music students at Sturgeon Bay High School.” – Heidi Hintz, Band Director, Sturgeon Bay High School More than 370 Door County students from choir and band programs at Gibraltar, Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay schools took part in Birch Creek’s “Artists in the Schools” program on Monday, October 14, 2019. Artists in the Schools began in 2002 as a way for Birch Creek and its faculty to give back to the community. Each year, nationally-acclaimed faculty return to Door County and share their talent and experience with local public school music students. Birch Creek Jazz Faculty members Jeff Campbell (bass and Jazz I & II Program Director), Rick Haydon (guitar) and Reggie Thomas (piano) played classic jazz and popular tunes for the music students at each campus and gave their Gibraltar High School music students gather for Birch Creek’s Artists in the advice on how to improve as young Schools program on October 14, 2019. musicians. Each of these Birch Creek faculty musicians traveled from far away (New York, St. Louis and Chicago, respectively) to present a mix of performance with lessons and discussion. During each session, Jeff, Rick and Reggie discussed their journey to becoming professional musicians and gave specific advice on how to approach practice and performance as music students. Birch Creek, together with the artists, thanks the Skinner Family Fund for project sponsorship.

Planned Giving at Birch Creek The Legacy Circle With appreciation and affection, Birch Creek wishes to honor Tom & Marlys Regan by reprinting their interview from 2009. Their words ring as true today as when they were first spoken. Their strength reminds us of how very fortunate Birch Creek is to have philanthropic leadership, especially during these unprecedented times. At an evening concert at Birch Creek years ago, we were astounded by the quality of the music we heard.
Tom and Marlys Regan in 2019 at the home of
Motivated by the students’ performance, we began what Lyn and Karl Huber, where they co-hosted a we considered to be our privilege: an annual contribution to Birch Creek percussion concert and reception Birch Creek. Our gift would provide future young musicians for Legacy Circle members. with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of learning from and performing with some of today’s best musicians and educators. In addition to becoming members of the Legacy Circle, we have named a room in the Faculty Building to honor past presidents of our volunteer organization, The Associates. Don Makuen and Charlie Dickson dedicated years of service to Birch Creek. We were inspired to think beyond our lifespan when supporting Birch Creek. Therefore, we have made arrangements in our trust to set aside a portion to go to Birch Creek. By doing so, we hope to keep Birch Creek going—and growing—for young people from all over the United States through our legacy gift. Please join us in doing the same. – Tom and Marlys Regan Members of the Birch Creek Legacy Circle have listed Birch Creek as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Members are of any age and gift amount. What they all have in common is that they wish to guarantee Birch Creek’s excellent music education and mission for future generations. For more information, please contact Mona Christensen at Birch Creek at (920) 868-2240.

Annual Giving at Birch Creek Play It Forward Annual Fund The Play It Forward Annual Fund is used for operational expenses and bridges the gap between tuition paid by families and the true cost of program delivery. See page 20 for more details. Birch Creek Strong Birch Creek Strong is the name of our “forward together” campaign to help us recover from unprecedented revenue shortfalls from closing the academy and cancelling concerts for the 2020 summer season. See page 21 for more information. Annual Scholarships Scholarship donations provide sustaining, continuing tuition support enabling Birch Creek to recruit promising young musicians, encourage students to return in following years, and, for some families, remove barriers to a Birch Creek education that tuition imposes. See donors list on pages 36-37. Concert Sponsorship Concert sponsorship allows Birch Creek to continue attracting some of the finest musicians and performers in the country, as well as providing our students with the invaluable experience of performing before live audiences. Capital Gifts Capital gifts support infrastructure projects vital to ongoing student and patron safety, and projects to repair or replace aging infrastructure essential to our growth. See page 19 for more information.
