PROGRAM BRIEF
P R OJ E C T S T A T E M E N T Next is an architecture and interior design company looking to expand their firm to another office in Dallas, Texas. Next has many desires and criteria for this space including originality, diversity, and wellness. Next desired a young perspective on what modern-day offices should incorporate. They wanted a space that brought new innovations and was not a replica of their previous offices. The Next office needed to have a balance of collaborative and private spaces for all possible employee needs. The design needed to be catered to ever y need the user may have and incorporate universal design components. Next also places a focus on wellness and desired for this to be evident through the design. Next’s office also required that the consideration of remote workers and in-person employees be incorporated into the office to mend the gap between these working styles. Next fostered a par tnership with Steelcase Inc. to supply furniture that was used throughout the entire office. A specified programming list including private offices, workstations, a cafe, meeting rooms, and more was provided to ensure this office not only satisfies the needs of Next but enables them to find success throughout their future.

DESIGN CONCEPT
I D E A T I O N
C R E A T I O N
“Ideation to Creation” is the concept chosen for the design of the Next office. This concept indicates the intentions of designing a user-focused space for the purpose of bringing ideas into creation. This concept was derived from the focus of three main principles: collaboration, innovation, and resolution. These principles indicate the values of Next and the process of design from beginning to end. The “ideation” process represents the beginning steps of the design phase from brainstorming and precedent studies, to developing a strong preliminar y design. The “creation” par t of the concept represents the later steps of the design process and bringing the ideas to life. The “ideation to creation” concept allows for an innovative workplace that not only meets the needs of Next but enables them to

APPLYING CONCEPT TO DESIGN During the schematic design process, an integral part of the programming was applying the concept of ideation to creation directly to the layout. Because of the existing structure, the concept was easily applied by differentiating the east and west side to these two functions. This layout significantly helped drive the following design decisions and create a distinct language for the office and these two sides.

MEZZANINE FLEXIBILITY
NIGHT-TIME WORK PARTY
DAY-TIME SEPARATED CAFE AND CL ASSROOM
DESGINING FOR USER NEEDS This mezzanine was designed to have the ultimate flexibility the Next office may need. The first iteration shows the day time function with a separated work cafe and training classrooms. The second iteration shows a nighttime variation allowing for employees to open up the entire north side of the mezzanine to accommodate for a larger meeting or work event. This mezzanine is able to serve many other functions such as a larger classroom or workshops, with the help of movable furniture pieces and an open, innovative design.

The design of this cafe was focused on catering to the various needs of its users. The work cafe features two sides separated by the mezzanine-level meeting room. The communal side (pictured above) features an open layout with cafe amenities and ample seating for employees to eat and converse with one another if desired. The private side of the work cafe features more individual seating for users that n e e d t o w o r k w h i l e t h e y e a t . This first office layout was designed for one of the three design directors. The position of design director leads their department design projects and works closely with their team as well as the studio directors. Because of these needs, the office is located in the west “ideation” side of the building with direct access to workstations, design and studio director offices, and resource areas. The office features a glass wall and door for visibility into the open office area as well as carpeting, wooden wall paneling, and a slatted ceiling for acoustical balance as well as comfort for the director and various guests of the space.
Managing Director Office
Studio Director Office
This second office layout was designed for the managing director. This position oversees all office productions, meets with clients, and helps out throughout all departments. Because of these needs, the office is located in the east “creation” side of the building, with close adjacency to the reception for client access, meeting spaces, and the sustainability director who has similar tasks. With this design, the managing director is able to meet with co-workers or clients when necessary or create a more private setting when focus is needed.
This third office layout was designed for one of the three studio directors. This role is responsible for staffing design projects and ensuring they run smoothly, while working closely with their team. Because of these needs, this office is located in the west “ideation” side of the building with close proximity to workstations and other offices for easy communication between departments and access to resources and team projects.
