EMERSON BUTT

I am a Design & Architecture graduate based in Melbourne. With the experience and expertise acquired, I approach the design process with both an open yet grounded mindset and often set off to showcase a unique perspective. After graudating in 2021, I have explored a variety of creative pursuits and travelled internationally to study foreign forms of design and broaden my repertoire. With this, I have revisited my works from my undergraduate degree with a new lens.

LUMEN HOUSE

Typology: Dual-Occupancy Terrace House

Location: Carlton, Victoria

Light is the cornerstone of interaction, connection and enrichment in all things living. Lumen House is an infusion of light and modernity in the context of an often dark and rigid typology, while holding sentiment to the heritage foundations.

The dual-occupancy dwelling sees light not only in the physical, measurable sense, but also by way of permeability, flexible thresholds and textural diffusion. It is designed for a multigenerational client, and aims to adapt to the post-pandemic needs of the family. Lumen House brings atmospheric enhancement in all spaces, fosters indoor and outdoor ecology and creates moments of connection at the individual and communal level and passive supervision within.

THE LIBRARY OF SYSTEMATIC DISRUPTION

Typology: Public Library

Location: Chinatown, Melbourne CBD

In this public library, the rigidity of the urban fabrics of the city are disputed and intentionally disrupted. The individual experience in Melbourne is restricted by the horizontal and vertical and there is lack of play between the two. Both are distinct in their form and program, with the horizontal fabric being the most frequented; hosting culture, cuisine, illumination and linearity. The vertical is marked mostly by privacy and habitat and is much less experienced by the average city-goer.

The library acts as a commentary on this rigidity, and aims to systematically disrupt and interweave these fabrics to foster a unique user experience. The project deals with a continuous manipulation of the ground plane as a building form and the program opposes hierarchical expectations of the typology. Architecturally, ground becomes wall, and wall becomes ceiling. Chinatown is brought up into the vertical and the library sinks down, all the while embracing the existing urban fabrics from neighbouring buildings. An embedded and contained “disruption”, the library creates a new public domain without formal boundaries.

A SENSORIAL SANCTUARY

Typology: Multi-Residential Complex

Location: Brunswick North, Victoria

The current age has often confined life to four walls and diminished our primal necessity to engage our senses in the living world. In a high-density living context, this project aims to reinvigorate the individual and collective psyche through visual, auditory, gustatory, olfactory and tactile stimulants. The sanctuary not only looks to enhance these five standard senses, but also the less acknowledged metaphysical senses: chronoception (perception of time), kinaesthesia (sense of movement) and equilibrioception (the sense of balance).

The design intent is actualised in a multitude of ways catering to the senses:

Vision scatterings of light, framed external stimuli, continutiy and shifting eye level.

Olfaction

perfumed flowers, cafe aromas, passive communal interactions of cooking

Audition attraction of wildlife, rain sounds brought into the home

Gustation accessible veggie and herb gardens

Somatosensation

materiality, grass beneath feet, reflexology pavement

Chronoception

sky hue changes, birds flocking, building illumination, deciduous flora

Kinaesthesia

swaying canopies, wildlife, visual rhythm of built forms

Equilibrioception

building heights, balacning of textures and vegetation

1:400 Studio Typology

Simple, flexible form, stepped-down areas for spatial gradations without vertical thresholds.

1:400 One Bedroom Apartment

Flexibility in dining/living/ study areas. Often connected to communal or private decking. More size options to cater for singles and couples.

1:400 Two+ Bedroom Apartment

Comes with semi-private decking area, or outdoor garden/balcony space. Often, these typologies will be the most flexible by means of space conversions and expansions.

1:750 Site Plan

There is no repetition to the units, giving rise to a more personalised experience for each resident and establishing a stronger ground for a home rather than a house. With the tetrising of blocks, the dwellings capitalise on all cardinal directions to enhance the sensorial experiences.

OTHER WORKS

MODELLING AND UNDERSTANDING CONSTRUCTION

This 3D model is a curation and demonstration of construction knowledge and representation, founded in analyses of plans, drawings and photographs of H2O Architects’ McKinnon Secondary College Senior Centre. It is the result of evaluating, selecting and implementing design solutions to a variety of architectural ideas.

DESIGN VISUALISATION TECHNIQUES

This project focuses on constructing a narrative using industry-level software - 3DS Max and V-Ray - through detailed modelling and rendering. Through compositional techniques, the narrative is based around the dichotomy of an online influencer’s daily life, where aestheticism and functionalism clash.
