We are proud to share this report on philanthropic funding for Emerson Health for fiscal year 2025. Health care systems across the Commonwealth and the nation continue to face significant financial challenges, and Emerson is no exception. Despite these pressures, we remain financially stable and are meeting them head-on. Your support is essential to our mission, and together we are making a lasting impact on the health of our community.
We remain firmly committed to our vision for a new Emergency Department on our hospital campus. To date, we have raised more than $37.5 million toward our $60 million goal. The first phase of this transformative project is underway, with demolition of the White House clearing the way for the new facility.
During the past fiscal year (October 2024–September 2025), gifts and pledges to the Emerson Health Foundation exceeded $12.6 million. More than $4 million supported hospital operations, strengthened by an extraordinary bequest. Over $7 million advanced the Transforming Health Campaign, with remaining funds supporting other essential capital, endowed, and memorial initiatives.
Your philanthropic support drives critical investments in our clinical staff, equipment, facilities, and community access. Our strong quality and safety performance—and the warmth of our patient experience directly reflect these investments.

The Auxiliary’s Centennial Celebration
On October 25, 2025, the Auxiliary’s Centennial Celebration at Gibbet Hill marked an extraordinary moment in the organization’s shared history, honoring more than 100 years of partnership with Emerson Hospital. What better way to celebrate this legacy than by coming together in such a meaningful and joyful way. Through the remarkable generosity of attendees, donors, and event sponsors, the Auxiliary raised more than $300,000 in support of the Pediatric and Adolescent Behavioral Health space in the proposed Emergency Department.

What if healthcare fundraising began with pride instead of trepidation? What if we viewed building a new Emergency Department (ED) as a reflection of what our community can do together? A place where our neighbors receive exceptional care, equipped to treat the whole person, mind and body, with skill and compassion.
If we only think about emergency care in crisis, fundraising can feel connected to trauma or to situations we would rather not imagine. If we choose to invest while we are healthy and our loved ones are safe, we have the clarity to see what our community deserves: the best care possible for every family.
For me, this is not theoretical. It is personal. As a mother of two and a primary caregiver during my mother’s eight-year journey with dementia, I have experienced healthcare as a strategist and as a daughter sitting in waiting rooms and navigating hard decisions. That experience shaped my perspective on what families need most in moments of uncertainty—clarity, competence, and care that honors both the clinical and emotional realities of the situation.
It is about supporting families in some of their most vulnerable hours, including mental health crises and complex medical moments that ripple far beyond the hospital walls.
My journey as part of the “sandwich generation” inspired my podcast, ‘wiched generation, to give voice to caregivers balancing children and aging parents. Caregiving changed the way I see healthcare infrastructure. Emergency care is not just about immediate stabilization.
In the decade I have spent in healthcare management, strategy, and innovation, I have seen how rapidly the healthcare landscape is shifting. From hospital closures and workforce shortages to the growing demand for behavioral health integration, community hospitals cannot stand still. They must evolve. That evolution is what excites me most about Emerson’s future.
Over the next five years, I hope to see Emerson continue to strengthen its role as a comprehensive regional health system, supported by modern facilities, expanded behavioral health support in the Emergency Department, and
compassionate, technologyenabled care close to home. As many communities lose local access, Emerson is a model of sustainable, highquality community care.
The community’s role is equally critical. A community hospital is only as strong as the people who stand behind it. Financial support, advocacy, and participation all matter. When community members invest their time, talent, and resources, they are not simply funding buildings; they are strengthening the safety net that every family may need.
For me, volunteerism is a strategic act. Time is my currency, and I dedicate it where I believe the impact is tangible. From funding newborn safety initiatives and supporting patients experiencing mental health crises, to advancing the new Emergency Department, The Friends focus on practical improvements that directly touch patients and caregivers and improve the experience for all.
My experiences—as a community leader, health strategist, daughter, and caregiver—have all led me to the same truth: local healthcare is vital. When a community rallies around its hospital, it builds more than infrastructure. It builds trust that matters in both everyday and life-altering moments. This is why I urge people to choose Emerson first before heading to Boston.
I want healthcare that is positive, local, and impactful. Emerson represents that vision, and together, we can strengthen it for the next generation.

To Provide Exceptional Regional Care
Emerson Health is embarking on a bold, multi-year transformation to ensure our community continues to receive the highest level of care—close to home. Through a $120 million investment, including a minimum of $60 million in philanthropy, the Transforming Health campaign will reimagine how and where care is delivered across our region.
This effort is about more than new buildings—it’s about creating a better experience for every patient and family we serve.
Key priorities include:
• A new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department, designed to improve flow, comfort, and safety, with a dedicated behavioral health unit
• Expanded outpatient and ambulatory care space on campus and throughout the region to increase access and convenience
• Modernized facilities and advanced technology to support our expert clinicians and deliver the most effective treatments available
Cardiac Rehabilitation: A New Home for Healing
As part of the Transforming Health Campaign, Cardiac Rehabilitation has moved to a larger, newly updated space on the first floor of the main campus. The expanded environment enhances comfort, accessibility, and capacity—allowing us to serve more patients and support their recovery with the personalized care they deserve.
Their move to new space in the Hospital allowed us to take down the White House, the first step in making room for the new Emergency Department building at the front of the Hospital campus.

The Lipcon Family Legacy
For Meghan and James Lipcon, supporting the Transforming Health Campaign at Emerson Health is not just a philanthropic investment—it is about strengthening the future of community-based medicine. Their history with Emerson spans generations, milestones, and moments of profound vulnerability, and anchored by trust and a shared belief that compassionate care shapes life at every stage.
A Lifetime of Connection
James’s connection to Emerson began at birth. Growing up in Concord, the hospital was a constant presence—the place for everything from stitches and sprained ankles to routine visits at Baker Avenue. For James, Emerson wasn’t just a building; it was a pillar of his community.
Meg, a Waltham native, first experienced the “Emerson Difference” after moving to Stow. “The first day you set foot at Emerson, you can feel it,” she says. “They care. There’s heart here.”
The Healing Power of Presence
That “heart” became a lifeline when Meg’s mother grew seriously ill and required daily rehabilitation. While the proximity allowed for daily visits, it was the atmosphere that left a lasting impression. “It’s the people,” Meg reflects. “Positivity makes a tremendous difference when you’re navigating uncertain moments. It eases worry and builds confidence. It heals in ways that go beyond medicine.”
Both Patient and Provider
The care her mother received at Emerson was not a surprise. Five years earlier, Meg had pivoted, changing her life to pursue her true calling. After 20 years as an insurance underwriter, Meg returned to school to become a nurse with one goal: “I will do anything to work at Emerson.” Today, she serves as a nurse in the Endoscopy & Digestive Health Center, fulfilling that promise every day. “I love it at Emerson. We care about patients and you care about us (the staff). It’s a perfect recipe for our family’s giving.”
Investing in Excellence
James shares Meg’s appreciation for the clinical heart of the hospital and also views Emerson through a strategic lens. He recognizes the immense pressure modern healthcare systems face—from financial complexities to the emotional weight of patient outcomes.
“It’s a challenging business,” James says. “Success starts at the top and trickles down. Emerson’s leadership brings in exceptional people, and that stability is why we feel so confident investing in its future.”
A Shared Future
As they now navigate the care of their aging parents, the Lipcons remain deeply committed to the hospital that has been there for every stage of their lives. By supporting the Transforming Health Campaign, they ensure that the cycle of care continues for future generations.

Lifetime of Caring: Why Wilma Johnson Chose to Make a Planned Gift to Emerson Health
For nearly a century, Wilma Winberg Johnson lived defined by purpose, generosity, and service. A longtime Bedford resident, she passed away peacefully at CarletonWillard Village on August 31, just weeks before her 100th birthday. Her life was filled with intellectual curiosity, music, adventure, and a profound commitment to helping others. Among the many organizations she supported, Emerson Health held a special place in her heart—so much so that she chose to make an unrestricted bequest that will continue her legacy for generations.
Born in Hudson, New York, Wilma moved with her family to Waltham in 1926. After graduating from Waltham High School in 1942, she attended the University of Massachusetts, earning a degree in psychology. At UMass, she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma, beginning more than eight decades of involvement with the sorority and establishing herself as a dedicated mentor and philanthropist.
Her academic journey continued at Iowa State University, where she helped establish a new KKG chapter and earned her master’s degree in psychology. There she met her husband, Aldie, and began a partnership marked by adventure, learning, and deep family life. Their path eventually led them to Bedford in 1957, where Wilma raised three children and immersed herself in the town’s civic and cultural fabric.
Wilma’s contributions were numerous: she served on the Bedford School Committee, led 4-H groups, participated in the League of Women Voters and the Bedford Historical Society, and continued playing four-hand piano concerts well into her 80s. In every endeavor, she embraced opportunities to connect, contribute, and uplift her community.
Wilma’s relationship with Emerson Health became one of the most meaningful parts of her life. Initially connected to the Emerson Hospital Auxiliary as a community member, she quickly found her purpose in a project that combined creativity with compassion: coordinating the sewing and distribution of teddy bears for pediatric patients.
What began as a small local effort grew into a beloved tradition. Each month, the Bedford Auxiliary group gathered to sew teddy bears. Under Wilma’s enthusiastic leadership, the project expanded well beyond Bedford to community centers, classrooms, and retirement homes, inspiring new volunteers wherever she went. To Wilma, the teddy bears were far more than handmade toys—they were symbols of comfort and reassurance for children in vulnerable moments.
Wilma’s life was shaped by service, enriched by music and adventure, and anchored in community. Emerson’s values –neighbors caring for neighbors – aligned closely with her own and by including Emerson in her estate plans, Wilma created a legacy that reflects her lifelong commitment to service and encourages others to give in meaningful ways.
Wilma’s dedication to Emerson Health stemmed from gratitude, community spirit, and her belief in the power of compassion – a reminder that a single person’s kindness can ripple outward for years – whether through a handmade teddy bear or a gift that supports future generations.
