Dear Friends, We are proud to share this report on philanthropic funding for Emerson Health for the fiscal year 2024. As hospitals and programs have closed throughout the Commonwealth, we remain fully committed to ensuring you have local access to high-quality care. Your support is vital, and together, we make a lasting impact on our community’s health.

Although the healthcare environment presents ongoing challenges in the postCOVID world, Emerson maintained financial stability last year—one of the few Massachusetts health systems to do so—thanks to generous donors like you.

Our team is dedicated to meeting you wherever you are on your health journey, and we appreciate your unwavering support.

In the past fiscal year (October 2023 – September 2024), gifts and pledges to the Emerson Health Foundation exceeded $9.5 million. More than $3.2 million funded hospital operations, while $4 million was committed to the Transforming Health Campaign. The remaining funds support essential capital, endowed, and memorial funds. Many individuals include Emerson in their estate planning, and we deeply appreciate their generosity.

Your philanthropic support drives investments in our clinical staff, equipment, facilities, and community access. Our high marks for quality and safety and the warmth of our compassionate patient experience reflect these investments.

Ryan Jessee first complained of back and stomach pain in the spring of 2022. The 35-yearold Bedford resident visited Boston-area emergency rooms, where doctors prescribed pain relievers and muscle relaxants, but did not provide a diagnosis or further treatment. Ryan and his family grew frustrated after long emergency room waits with no answers.

Ryan works for the Holland Company in the South End of Boston, rehabilitating old homes. “I guess they saw a guy in his mid-30s who worked construction and thought it was just aches and pains because of my work,” Ryan said. “I was about to give up.” But his life changed August of 2022 when his brother drove him to Emerson Hospital’s Emergency Department.

LIFE-SAVING CARE

Ryan Jessee’s Story

Emergency Room physician Dr. Kring listened to Ryan and ordered tests and imaging.

Hours later, Dr. Kring delivered news that no one wants to hear: Ryan had a tumor on his pancreas that was causing pain in his spinal cord.

“He saved my life,” said Ryan. ”Him taking me seriously was huge.”

Jim added that Dr. Kring’s “insight to do something no other doctor had” made all the difference. “Our son would not be here today without it.”

“I was grateful to care for Ryan and to be part of the Emergency Department team that helped to make this crucial diagnosis,” Dr. Kring said.

“In Ryan’s case, we were able to make an important, lifechanging diagnosis and most importantly, connect him with the care he needed to get on the road to recovery.”

Ryan and three of his four siblings attended high school in Concord and still live in the area. His parents, Jim and Kimberly, lived in Concord until 2014 before relocating to Boston.

“It was a different story at Emerson,” said Jim.

“We are beyond grateful for Dr. Kring, who took the time to truly listen to Ryan as he described his pain,” Kim said. “We are confident that Dr. Kring’s swift decision to order a CT scan helped save our son’s life.”

An extraordinary donation Due to the extraordinary care Ryan received at Emerson, the family made a generous donation towards Emerson Hospital’s new emergency department in honor of Dr. Kring and “with gratitude we can never fully put into words,” Kim said. “We just celebrated our third holiday season since Ryan’s diagnosis, and we all realize how precious our time together is,” said Jim. “There are no guarantees, but it was Dr. Kring’s insight that saved Ryan. It is a rough thing for a family to go through. They made a difficult situation somewhat bearable.”

Doctors biopsied Ryan’s tumor, and he immediately started treatment to shrink it before it could metastasize and spread to other organs. He underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and eventually immunotherapy at the Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital. “They were fantastic,” said Ryan.

“I was impressed by Ryan’s resilience in the face of a challenging diagnosis and thankful for the opportunity to care for him and patients like him every day,” said Dr. Kring.

Now, two years later, Ryan is scheduled for a Whipple procedure in March.

“This experience has taught our family to truly appreciate each other, and every day,” said Kim.

LIFE-SAVING CARE

Honore Weiner and Bill Lott Honore Weiner and Bill Lott are among the most enthusiastic supporters of Emerson. Through multiple medical issues, they credit the exceptional skill at Emerson Health as the reason they have beaten the odds every time.

Defying the odds

The couple’s relationship with the hospital and its ancillary therapeutic programs dates back to 1988 when Bill, then 45, experienced his first heart attack. He participated in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Emerson and the care and support he received, combined with the relationship that he crafted with Ginny Dow, RN, were invaluable in promoting his recovery. Over the next year, he entered the Cardiac Rehab program two more times: after he experienced an additional series of cardiac episodes, and then again after two failed double bypass surgeries at another hospital.

Honore was told that his life expectancy at that time was about 5 years.

Thirty-six years later, Bill proudly and repeatedly shares how grateful he is that the support, care, and compassion provided by Ginny Dow and the Cardiac Rehabilitation team enabled him to beat the odds.

Honore ‘s experiences are more recent.

In February 2021 she experienced a slip and fall on black ice and shattered her left shoulder. The initial concern was that the damage was so significant that a full shoulder replacement could not be completed. However, Dr. Peter Kok, Orthopedic Surgeon, performed a complete reverse shoulder replacement with excellent mobility and range of motion – an extraordinary result.

In June of 2021 Honore was taken to Emerson’s Emergency Department after collapsing at home. Dr. Claire Carrazco, Neurologist, and Dr. Scott Paparello, Infectious Disease Specialist completed extensive diagnostic testing and determined a diagnosis of herpes encephalitis. Honore’s family was told that if she survived, her level of functioning might require full-time care. Honore once again defied the odds and improved enough to be released and receive home care. She worked with the Neuro team at the Clough Family Center for Rehabilitation and Sports Therapies where she received intensive neurological therapy under the guidance of Nicole Kelly, OT, Neuro Service Line Supervisor.

Nicole guided Honore through visual processing and brain-body integration exercises to improve task efficiency and accuracy. “Honore demonstrated remarkable perseverance and full commitment to her recovery,” Nicole said.

Honore continued her therapy for two years and, through hard work, dedication and incredible progress, was able to resume all aspects of her life successfully. Nicole and her team enabled Honore to regain her skills, confidence and sense of well-being.

In August, 2024 an annual mammogram revealed a breast cancer diagnosis for Honore. Treatment was provided quickly, effectively and compassionately through a collaboration between Dr. Andrea Resciniti, Surgeon, Dr. John McGrath, Radiologist, and Dr. Uma Narayanasami, Oncologist. She received physical therapy with Kara Lammerding, PT, at the Clough Center to lower the risk of reduced flexibility, mobility and range of motion in the left shoulder due to the radiation treatment. Today, Honore is extremely grateful to be cancer free and without any compromise to her left shoulder functioning.

Honore shared, “I am passionate about expressing how absolutely outstanding my care was in all our experiences.

Emerson enabled me to beat the odds every time. The impressive skills of the medical practitioners extended well beyond their specialties. They were exceptionally kind, compassionate, considerate, respectful and supportive.

I am profoundly grateful that, as a result of the care that Bill and I received through Emerson, we each experienced the best possible outcomes. Thanks to Emerson, we have both definitely beaten the odds!”.

Honore and Bill’s history and experiences led them to make donations to the Cardiac Rehabilitation program early on and more recent donations to Emerson Health, Emerson’s Cancer Center, and the Neuro team at the Clough Family Center.

Donors Leslie and Rob Bergman With three active daughters, the Bergmans relied on Emerson often for emergency and routine care. “Every time we visited the Emergency Department, we received a teddy bear hand-made by Emerson’s Auxiliary. This soothing gift provided a lasting reminder of Emerson’s compassion,” Leslie says.

Now their daughters are grown, but Leslie and Rob still live in Concord and depend on Emerson for a wide array of health needs, including a hernia, tonsillectomy, and colon surgery with a six-night hospital stay to treat complex diverticulitis.

Winkie Bush Leaves Her Mark “Pioneer” “Trailblazer” “Determined” Winkie started her own professional accounting firm, one were all adjectives people used when describing Winifred “Winkie” Bush. Winkie lived a robust and active life up until her death in February, 2023 at the age of 102. Winkie’s last residence was at the Newbury Court in Concord, where she was an active community member and a generous philanthropist.

of the first women to do so and operated her company in Concord for over 39 years. In fact, when Winkie was 96 years old she was still doing taxes for clients. Her hard work, determination and tenacity was unparallelled. When Winkie was not in the office, she was an avid golfer at the Concord Country Club, where she was a golf club champion.

Winkie left an indelible mark on Emerson Health through her philanthropy and her giving spirit.

Throughout Winkie’s life she provided numerous gifts to Emerson Health. In 2010, she made a substantial donation supporting the installation of a new linear accelerator (technology used to provide radiation treatment) in the Cancer Center. Winkie’s motivation was, in part, a tribute to her husband, Walter, who passed away from cancer in 1993 and had to travel to Boston for treatment. With the Mass General Brigham Cancer Center at Emerson, patients are able to receive the best care without the need to make a trip to Boston.

Winkie not only supported Emerson philanthropically but was also a patient. While in the hospital, she would proudly point out to staff the plaque that was placed outside the Linear Accelerator Control Room that noted her donation to Emerson.

The Bush family had a history of supporting the hospital and Winkie, a Concord resident since the 1950s, was a devout volunteer at Emerson Health. She worked at the reception desk for many years, along with devoting time to other community organizations including the Concord Chamber of Commerce, Concord Family Services and Concord Free Public Library.

In 2024, Emerson Health was the grateful beneficiary of an unrestricted $1.5 million bequest from the estate of Winkie Bush.

Winkie was a donor to Emerson throughout her lifetime, and thoughtful estate planning enabled her to support the hospital in an even more substantial way after she died. She recognized the value of Emerson Health to her quality of life and the community where she lived. Her bequest will help ensure that Emerson remains a strong regional healthcare provider for many years to come.

Like Winkie, benefactors who include Emerson Health as part of their estate plan are recognized as members of the Casper Jenney Society. Over the years, support from these generous individuals has had a substantial impact on patient care and has contributed to Emerson’s role as the premier health care provider in the region.
