It is with great pleasure that we share with you this report on philanthropic support to Emerson Hospital for fiscal year 2018. Emerson continues to have a meaningful impact on the communities we serve, just as your support has a significant impact on what we are able to do in those communities. We are very fortunate to have so many donors and volunteers who step forward each year to help transform health and wellness in our community. Together we are truly having an impact.

Thanks to your generosity and the skilled leadership of our Board and senior team, Emerson had a positive financial outcome for the eighth consecutive year. Thoughtful strategic planning and a focus on outstanding patient experience and clinical quality are key factors in our financial success, and philanthropy, of course, plays an equally important role. Our plans project continued excellence in quality and strong financial results as we expand and strengthen the hospital’s diversified service offerings across the continuum of care.

We are committed to maintaining Emerson’s independence while continuing to build strong clinical affiliations with Partners HealthCare. We continue to make capital investments in the hospital to meet the demands and expectations of all those we serve. These investments in our clinical staff, equipment and facilities continue to reap rewards, with the hospital receiving high marks for the quality of our care, as well as the warmth of our patient experience. We are very proud of our physicians, nurses and all those who serve our patients, in both the inpatient and outpatient Centers of Excellence at Emerson Hospital.

During the past fiscal year (October 2017-September 2018), gifts and commitments to the Emerson Health Care Foundation totaled more than $2.7 million. More than $1.1 million of those dollars were donated to the Annual Appeal. The remainder of the giving was directed toward a variety of important capital, endowed and memorial funds.

Emerson Hospital relies on you and all of our generous supporters and volunteers. On the following pages, we recognize many of the individuals and organizations who are helping us further extend the Emerson difference in advanced, quality care. In this report, we share four individual profiles that showcase examples of those who donate their time and resources in support of the hospital. We are extremely grateful to them and all of our friends and supporters.

For Lee McGowan, financial planning included a planned gift to Emerson Lee McGowan remembers the first time he was at Emerson Hospital. It was 2010, and he wasn’t a patient. Rather, he attended an event as the guest of Byron Woodman, cofounder and president of The Monument Group Companies in Concord and a longtime hospital friend and donor.

“The new linear accelerator was being unveiled, and Byron wanted me to see it and experience the energy at an Emerson event,” recalls Mr. McGowan, managing director, CCO and partner at Monument Group Wealth Advisors.

No wonder: the state-of-the-art technology, which delivers precision radiation therapy, was equal to any linear accelerator in Boston. A successful fundraising initiative covered the substantial costs associated with installing the equipment at the Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital-Bethke. Countless patients have benefited from Emerson’s commitment to providing the highest-quality cancer care.

Mr. McGowan was impressed. Before long, Mr. Woodman nominated his colleague to become an Emerson corporator— someone who spreads the word on the hospital’s programs and outreach to the community. “I’ve been a corporator since 2011, and it’s provided me the opportunity to learn a great deal about Emerson,” says Mr. McGowan, who is a CFA charterholder and CFP® practitioner.

Since moving to Sudbury, he and his wife, Rose, have grown to appreciate Emerson. “The hospital certainly has evolved since we moved here, thanks to the collaborations with other medical facilities, the renovations and expansions and, of course, the technology,” says Mr. McGowan.

The McGowans have shown their support for Emerson by making a planned gift— including Emerson in their estate plan. As a result, they are members of the Casper Jenney Society. Mr. McGowan knows a good deal about planned giving because he advises individuals, couples and families on their finances. He is also a member of Emerson’s Planned Giving Committee.

Planned giving tends to be misunderstood, he says. “There’s a misconception that planned giving is for just the very wealthiest of families. But as we point out to clients across the wealth spectrum, there’s another way to look at it. Planned giving is a way to make more of a commitment to an organization at any level of wealth. It’s a thoughtful way to show your support.”

The other misconception is that making a planned gift is complex, time-consuming and involves a lot of paperwork. “That’s not true,” says Mr. McGowan. “For example, it is very easy to add Emerson as a beneficiary of part of an IRA or other retirement account. In fact, adding Emerson as a beneficiary is generally as straightforward as pulling a beneficiary form from your online account or requesting a form from your advisor.

“Donating funds from a pre-tax retirement account may be one of the most taxefficient methods of supporting a favorite charity at one’s passing,” he adds.

The simplicity of a planned gift might surprise some people, he notes. But Mr. McGowan is never surprised to see the level of comfort that settles on individuals when they know they have planned to provide support to the people and organizations that they care most about.
