It is with great pleasure that we share with you this report on philanthropic funding to Emerson Hospital for fiscal year 2019. Emerson continues to make a meaningful impact on the communities we serve; just as your support significantly impacts what we are able to do in those communities. We are very fortunate to have so many donors and volunteers who step forward each year to support health and wellness in our community. Together, we are truly making an impact.

The industry in which we operate is unlike any other in the economy. As many of you know, we are not always fully reimbursed for the services we provide. We are in a very competitive labor market and need to compensate our physicians, nurses and staff at market rates.

Pharmaceutical costs continue to escalate. Technology investments, campus infrastructure and new equipment needs all place a heavy burden on the hospital. All that said, thanks to your generosity, and the skilled leadership of our Boards and senior team, Emerson had a positive financial outcome last year. Our future plans project continued excellence in quality and strong financial results as we expand and strengthen the Hospital’s diversified service offerings across the continuum of care. Your support helps us invest back into the community as we continue to build our health care network.

We are committed to maintaining Emerson’s independence while continuing to build a deep clinical affiliation with Partners HealthCare. We continue to make capital investments in the Hospital to meet the demands and expectations of all those we serve. These investments in our clinical staff, equipment and facilities continue to reap rewards, with the Hospital receiving high marks for the quality of our care as well as the warmth of our compassionate patient experience.

In the past fiscal year (October 2018 – September 2019), gifts and commitments to the Emerson Health Care Foundation totaled over $3.5 million. Over $1.25 million of those dollars was donated to the Annual Appeal. The remainder of the giving was directed toward a variety of important capital, endowed and memorial funds.

Emerson Hospital relies on you and all of our generous supporters and volunteers. On the following pages, we recognize many of the individuals and organizations that are helping us further extend the Emerson difference in advanced, quality care. In this report, we share four individual profiles that showcase examples of those who donate their time and resources to support the Hospital. We are extremely grateful to them and all of our friends and supporters.

A commitment to community Joshua and Claire Nelson are stepping up to the plate

Joshua and Claire Nelson were drawn to Concord for its great community resources including the schools, library, museums and the hospital. They are passionate about having a successful, vibrant community hospital and supporting other key non-profit institutions in the community. Josh, who grew up in a small community outside of Portland, Maine, joined the Emerson Foundation Board in 2016. Claire grew up in Hong Kong and is on the Board of Governors of the Concord Museum and the Board of Trustees of the Massachusetts Historical Society. She heads the history department at Concord Academy, Josh is a managing director in the health care practice at Thomas H. Lee Partners. They met at Princeton, where both attended college.

“We have been in Concord since 2008 having lived previously in New York and Boston. We now have three children who are 13, 11 and 9.

We moved here because it is such a wonderful community to raise our kids. With an active young family, we have made good use of the hospital and always had excellent results. We really appreciate having an exceptionally capable hospital right in our own backyard. We want to support that.

“I am drawn to Emerson both personally and professionally. In my day job, my firm invests in a wide range of health care-related companies.

Here at home, we understand what a huge impact the hospital has on our day-to-day lives.

All health care is local.

“We find that few people realize how many community hospitals can be challenged given today’s health care climate. Emerson, like many other community hospitals, truly relies on the strength and support of donations and contributions to help support its mission. That is important feedback to share with the community.

We don’t want people to take the hospital for granted.

“Emerson is very important to us. I always tell people that I think Emerson has the best of both worlds: premier clinical care with an outstanding record of accomplishments and awards recognizing that they deliver exceptional care; and delivering that care in a local setting with the feel of an institution that takes care of its community. Emerson provides exceptional care in a way that is very personalized.

“We grew up in families that believed in the importance of contributing to the communities in which we live. Concord is such a special place because the people before us have invested so much time and so many resources to make it that way. It’s now our generation’s turn to build on this and work to ensure the vibrancy of these wonderful community institutions for future generations. It’s important to us that institutions like Emerson Hospital are financially supported and strengthened. It is a tremendous privilege to be able to support the hospital and the great care that is being delivered.”

Physician, neighbor, patient Dr. Deborah Greene understands Emerson’s vital role in the community

As a newly-trained Emergency Medicine physician, Deborah Greene, MD never imagined that she would take a position in Concord, the town where she grew up. Working at area Emergency Departments allowed her to compare academic medical centers with those in the community. Before long, the reputation of the Emerson Hospital Emergency Department (ED), the teamwork she observed there and the mutual respect among the physicians and nurses convinced her to join the staff in 2004.

Today, Dr. Greene is Associate Chair of the Emerson Emergency Department and oversees its Quality Assurance initiatives.

“Growing up in Concord, I know my brother and I were brought to the ED from time to time and now I rely on the hospital and our medical staff to care for myself and my family. I volunteered at the hospital when I was taking pre-med classes.

I worked in the ED on weekends, mostly keeping patients updated and bringing people coffee and blankets. The facility was much different – it was a big room with curtains! We have of course come a long way since those early days when ED medicine first became a recognized specialty.

Now we have an opportunity to envision how best we can deliver the vital life-saving care that our community needs in the decades to come.

“Working in the ED, I have witnessed that, time and again, we are able to save lives by being here in the community and having the depth and breadth of skills and resources that are the hallmarks of Emerson. Minutes really matter in an emergency. Moreover, during the past decade, many hospitals across Massachusetts have closed or they have eliminated vital community services – Intensive Care Units, pediatric departments, maternity services. Emerson has done just the opposite – deepening its commitment to the community and expanding care and services. I realize how important it is to have a hospital in the community that serves everyone – expectant moms, patients with sudden strokes and serious heart attacks, active children with sports injuries and asthma attacks.

For all of our patients, Emerson really matters and it is so important for us to be here.

“About a year ago, I was privileged to join the Foundation Board of Directors. I am excited to think about being tasked to help build the Emerson of tomorrow. Working here makes me an excellent ambassador to speak with potential donors about what a reimagined new ED could mean to area residents. The challenge with Emergency Medicine is that you are not seeing people at their best, you have never met them before and you might have to give them devastating news that changes their lives forever. Having an advanced state-of-the-art and comfortable facility for all of our diverse patient populations will help to make these challenges easier for both the staff and the community.

“When I talk to my friends and neighbors about Emerson, I always tell them that I wouldn’t work at a place that didn’t treat people the way I would want my own family treated. I am very proud of the extremely high quality care that Emerson delivers, 24/7.”

A volunteer who sees the benefits of her work in action Deb Van Walsum saw early in life the difference a Hospital Auxiliary makes to the patient experience.

Today, Deb is the President of the Auxiliary of Emerson Hospital, a volunteer organization that annually raises over $100,000 to enhance the patient experience. Ms. Van Walsum sums it up modestly, “At the end of the day, we’re a group of thoughtful, committed volunteers who strive to do a good job.” An understatement if there ever was one. Volunteering with the Auxiliary provides its intergenerational members opportunities to connect with each other during social events and provides a meaningful way to give back through informing the community about Emerson Hospital services, fundraising and community education programs. From funding initiatives, state-of-the-art facilities and advanced medical equipment to handcrafting teddy bears that comfort young patients and hanging art to create a warm and caring environment, the Auxiliary improves the patient experience in all areas.

For Ms. Van Walsum, her curiosity about volunteerism began when she first accompanied her grandmother to an auxiliary meeting. “When I was growing up in New Jersey, my grandmother was an auxilian at our local hospital. It left an impression on me that these people came together and were doing something bigger than themselves by helping the community.”

“As a young woman who was given a lifechanging health diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis, I coped by getting involved with the Arthritis Foundation. I was recognized for leading a support group with their organization.

I believe that volunteerism is part of the equation of being healthy. Doing something that connects you with the community can help your personal wellness.”

Upon moving to Carlisle 10 years ago, Ms. Van Walsum met Betty Ann Killian, past President of the Auxiliary, and also a Fenn School parent.

Soon after, Ms. Van Walsum was asked to become involved with one of the Auxiliary’s beloved long-standing traditions: Tree of Lights, a moving ceremony that memorializes lost loved ones and celebrates those important in our lives during the holiday season. “This wonderful event provides an opportunity to recognize our shared humanity.”

Ms. Van Walsum has a practical approach to volunteerism. “People think volunteering should be completely altruistic. However, I do believe that volunteering should be a little bit about yourself. You should be passionate about the organization where you are volunteering.

It should be a venture that fills your heart and gives you purpose. I feel the Auxiliary is where I am meant to be right now. It is extremely rewarding.”

Ms. Van Walsum, who is also a Corporator, donor and on the Foundation Board, receives health care at Emerson and so can seamlessly talk to her community about Emerson Hospital and the Auxiliary. “Living in Carlisle, I find it very easy to talk with people about what Emerson means for the community. I have seen “Emerson in action” for friends and neighbors. I encourage them to use Emerson services and to volunteer for this warm-hearted, yet strategic, organization where they can witness those rewards in action.

It is a unique and special experience. Emerson is very focused on delivering the best care they can for the community. And the Auxiliary is here to bridge the gaps in programs and services, supporting a health network that provides expert, compassionate care.”

It all started with a doctor’s appointment Amaresh and Sadhana Mahaptra grew to appreciate Emerson’s many resources

Amaresh and Sadhana Mahaptra of Acton trace their involvement in Emerson Hospital back to a visit that Mr. Mahaptra had many years ago with his primary care physician, Dr. Henry Valliant of Acton Medical Associates. “It was about 16 years ago,” remembered Mr. Mahaptra. “I was having a chat with Dr. Valliant about how I could get involved with the hospital after a check-up and he told me that he was recommending me to be a corporator. I had no idea what that was.”

Mr. Mahaptra soon learned. “We have lived in Acton since 1986 and our youngest daughter was actually born at Emerson. Through the years, we had many opportunities to use the hospital for ourselves and our family. We always had an excellent experience at the hospital. When I became a corporator, I had an opportunity to attend the breakfast briefing meetings and really learn about all the amazing procedures and services that the hospital has to offer. Those meetings were very informative and a great way to learn about the hospital.”

Both Sadhana and Amaresh have been exposed to health care from an early stage because of several doctors in their families. “We are so lucky to have a place like Emerson in our community. It is amazing to have this kind of expertise so close to home. I can’t say enough about how important that is. At some point in time, all of us will need these services. Anyone who understands the breadth of services that Emerson provides can appreciate how dedicated the hospital is to fulfilling its charitable mission.

For this reason, Sadhanna and I want to support Emerson as much as we can.”

Mr. Mahaptra’s involvement expanded significantly when he joined the Emerson Board of Directors in 2008, serving for nine years and three consecutive terms. In his role on the Board, Mr. Mahaptra chaired several key committees including the Governance Committee and the Community Benefits Committee. He also served on many other committees and taskforces.

“Chairing the Community Benefits Committee really opened my eyes about how important Emerson’s role is in meeting the health and wellness needs of our community,” he said.

“Emerson has always been so supportive of our area residents, which is why so many of us want to give back to the hospital in return.

“When we talk to people in Acton and elsewhere about Emerson, we encourage them to get involved at some level by donating, by volunteering or by becoming a corporator. It is an institution that truly belongs to us. It takes care of us. I also point out to them that their feedback and their opinions matter. The hospital greatly values and responds to community concerns.”

After his service on the Board of Directors, Mr. Mahaptra came back to the place where it all started and continues to serve the hospital as a Corporator. And his trusted advisor Dr. Valliant? He too is now retired and serving the hospital as a Corporator. They both appreciate what a treasure Emerson is and understand how much the hospital means to the communities in our region.

Endowments A robust endowment helps ensure the financial well being of Emerson Hospital and the continued delivery of high quality health care for future generations. Since the hospital’s founding in 1911, many donors have contributed to its endowment.

Emerson receives $1 million gift thanks to thoughtful estate planning from the Garth family

Benefactors who include Emerson Hospital as part of their estate plan are recognized as members of the Casper Jenney Society. Over the years, support from these generous individuals has had a substantial impact on patient care.

In 2019, Emerson was the grateful beneficiary of an unrestricted $1 million bequest from Granville Garth. The Garth family were long-time supporters of the hospital. Granville Garth and his mother Sally Garth were Concord residents and generous donors for many years.

Sally (Sarah) died in January, 2015 at age 97. She was a long-time volunteer at Emerson and a consistent contributor to the Annual Appeal since 1969. “When I once asked Mom if the hospital knew how old she was (probably late 80s at the time) she said, please don’t tell them as they might not let me continue,” said her daughter Susan.

Sally’s son, Granville, passed away in May 2019 at age 69. He started contributing to the Annual Appeal in 1974. “Mom was the reason Granville gave his gift to both Emerson and the Concord Free Public Library,” said Susan. “Mom broke both hips, each ten years apart (at 87 and 97) and Emerson repaired them. Wheeler 6 helped mom recover. She was determined not to be in a wheelchair until the last weeks of her life.”

Susan shared some additional family history. “Mom’s Dad, my grandfather, did not finish high school because his father died when my grandfather was 14. Pop went to work as a messenger at the First National Bank in Little Rock 22

Arkansas, where he got an on‑the‑job education in banking and cotton financing, became a Vice President at Guaranty Trust in New York City and moved his family to Pelham, New York.

Mom and her three older brothers were each named the “student who had attained the highest mental, moral and physical development” at Pelham High School. Perhaps because my grandfather did not finish high school, he made sure his daughter, as well as his sons, went to college.

“Granville lived with Mom until she moved to Newbury Court in 2004.

Mom taught Granville, by her own example, about contributing to his community. In addition to supporting the library, Granville also volunteered on the tech crew at the Concord community theater. Granville made it possible for Mom to stay in her home into her late 80s.

“Before my Dad died in 1975, he made financial provisions for Granville. Since Granville had a job assembling printed circuit boards and lived with Mom, the funds Dad left for him grew dramatically in the next 40 years. Mom encouraged Granville to put the hospital and the Concord library in his estate plan.”

The Garth family were consistent and generous donors to Emerson during their lifetime. Generous estate planning enabled them to support the hospital even more after they died.

They recognized the value of Emerson Hospital to their quality of life and the community they loved. This bequest will help ensure the financial stability of the hospital’s future.
