As we reflect on another unprecedented year, it is hard to believe that the pandemic is still with us. Despite the ever-changing environment, I am proud of our team’s unwavering dedication to providing life-saving and compassionate care. We are incredibly grateful for our donors and volunteers, who ensure our ability to care for our community now, and for years to come.

With great pride, we share with you this report on philanthropic funding to Emerson Hospital for fiscal year 2021. The pandemic profoundly impacted healthcare delivery. Access to local, high-quality care is more important than ever before, and your support is equally essential to ensure our community’s health and wellness. Together, we can truly make a difference.

The Hospital returned to more normal operations in 2021 as we all learned to navigate the COVID environment, allowing the Hospital to fully care for the community. COVID-19 remains part of our lives, and the complexities of our community’s healthcare needs continue to evolve.

Only with your philanthropic investment can we stay financially strong. We are grateful to be in such a supportive community.

During the past fiscal year (October 2020 – September 2021), gifts and pledges to the Emerson Health Care Foundation totaled over $3.8 million, with more than $1.7 million donated to the Annual Appeal. The remainder was directed toward various essential capital, endowed, and memorial funds. We were also the beneficiary of some incredible planned gifts this past year.

We are so fortunate that many people include Emerson in their estate planning.

With your help, we continue to invest in the Hospital, clinical staff, equipment, and facilities.

Emerson’s high marks for quality and safety and the warmth of our compassionate patient experience are testaments to our investments. We are also committed to maintaining our independence while deepening our clinical affiliation with Mass General Brigham.

Westford couple identifies a need during the pandemic The Greenwood Nurses’ Scholarship Fund is born

After college, Ann trained to be a medical technologist at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston. After graduation, she worked at Seton Hospital in Austin and Rome City Hospital in New York. Today, she is the Administrator of the Westford Suzuki School, where she has been an active part of the school family since its founding.

“Our earliest interaction with Emerson was when our older daughter Lara enlisted as a student volunteer, culminating in an award for 300 hours of service. She is now an aviation professional living in Somerville with her family. Her sister Emily lives with her family in Henderson, Nevada where she teaches elementary art,” said Ann. Darryl and Ann have been married 53 years and have three grandchildren.

Ann and Darryl’s ties to Emerson came by way of their primary care physician, Edwin Knights, MD of Acton Medical Associates, who continues to care for the couple.

Although Darryl visited the Emerson Emergency Department a few times for minor injuries, he is happy to have never been hospitalized.

In 2008, Ann was treated for breast cancer at the Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital – Bethke. Following a

Ann and Darryl Greenwood are transplanted Texans by way of upstate New York. They came to Westford in 1975 to begin Darryl’s career with MIT Lincoln Laboratory, after he earned his PhD in electrical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and following four years of active service in the U.S. Air Force. “At that time, Westford had a turkey farm and a flea market but no stores, so we travelled to Acton or Littleton to shop,” said Darryl.

lumpectomy and radiation, Ann quickly returned to normal life and remains cancer-free. She praises the care she received at Emerson. In 2017, she had a hip replacement, and, although she was not overjoyed to be in the hospital, she shared that “the staff were wonderful.”

Though Ann and Darryl have been regular contributors to Emerson over the years, they wanted to make a more significant contribution. In 2021, they decided to “up the ante,” as Darryl says, and create the Greenwood Nurses’ Scholarship Fund with an initial $25,000 contribution for continuing education. “We read a lot during the pandemic about the challenges of nursing recruitment and retention and decided to do something to help,” explained Darryl. “We wanted the nurses at Emerson to feel recognized and appreciated. It seemed obvious that this profession is under considerable stress.”

“This wonderful gift from the Greenwood family has created such a gratifying feeling for the staff to know how much the community is supporting them,” said Mark Mahnfeldt, RN-BC, MBA, MSN NEC-A, Emerson’s Vice President of

Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer.

“This significant gift will help us to continue to invest in the professional growth of our nursing staff.”

“Scholarships empower our nurses to progress in their professional growth from obtaining certifications in their specific areas of practice to advancing their scholastic degrees from associate’s through doctorates,” explained Mark. “These investments are critical to our front-line nurses and leaders and could not be more timely in light of the challenges posed by the pandemic. We are piloting a new partnership with the Massachusetts chapter of the Organization of Nurse Leaders (ONL) to develop a new education curriculum for nurses, offering continuing education credits through conferences, lunch and learn seminars and other educational offerings. We are so incredibly grateful to the Greenwoods,” he concluded.

“Emerson is our hospital and we want to make sure it is there when we need it,” said Darryl. They have certainly made an investment to help ensure that their goal is met.

Easing the Storm Inside Bags Help Anchor Young Patients During Mental Health Crisis Mental health issues are on the rise across the country. Youth especially are hurting, exacerbated by isolation, disruptions to normal school and life, and family economic insecurity as a result of the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control, between January through mid-October, 2021 emergency department visits related to mental health increased 24% for children ages 5-11 and spiked 31% among ages 12-17 compared to the same period in 2020.

As Christine Schuster, RN, MBA, President and CEO at Emerson Hospital explains, “As a hospital leader, I have the perspective to see the far-reaching effects of the pandemic on the emotional well-being of the community. Our community, including our youngest members, needs help. Each week on average, five to eight children, ages 8-18, come to Emerson’s Emergency Department (ED) in crisis requiring mental health care.”

“Our ED team works hard to stabilize these young patients, but they often require specialized inpatient care at a psychiatric hospital for children,” explains Tanya Bergen, Psychiatric Team Triage Leader at Emerson. “Due to the shortage of pediatric psychiatrists and psychiatric beds in the state, these children often stay in our ED for several days until a bed is available at a psychiatric facility.”

Recognizing how difficult this waiting period is, the Pediatric Intervention Team’s Child Life Specialists, Vicky Hopley and Mallory Harrison, responded by creating the Anchor Bag Program.

Anchor Bags, modeled after Emerson’s popular “Coping Kits”, are given to behavioral health patients, ages 8 and older, to provide tools for coping and to help them stay focused in the present while they await future placement.

Generously funded by Emerson’s Auxiliary and donations, the bags contain: journals, markers, pads of paper, decks of cards, stress balls, fidget items, word searches, and relaxation exercises.

Hopley explains, “The items in the Anchor Bags not only help patients pass time but also give them safe tools for relaxation and expression of emotions.” Harrison shares, “Parents and patients frequently express gratitude when they receive the bags and appreciate its therapeutic value.”

“We do everything in our power to provide the best possible care for children while they await placement at a pediatric mental health hospital,” says Christine Schuster. “I am very grateful to our Pediatric Intervention Team for creating the Anchor Bags and to our Auxiliary, community donors and the Emergency Department Team for supporting the Anchor Bag Program.”

In addition to supporting the Anchor Bag program, the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) has partnered with Emerson to create a new resource. This new list provides information about mental and behavioral health support programs and tools for navigating the Massachusetts behavioral health care system.

They understand the importance of giving back Concord’s Megan and Mark Pesce are making a difference

With that motto, Mark along with his business partner and wife, Megan, did what many would call unthinkable. In the midst of a global pandemic, they doubled the size of their company. “When times get tough, the key for us is that we have a great relationship with our people.” Mark says earnestly. “I think that’s one of the things that sets us apart,” adds Megan.

What also sets them apart is a deep commitment to giving back, to Emerson and to their community at large. Throughout COVID, the Pesces donated breakfasts for Emerson staff and area first responders several times in the long, difficult days of the pandemic. Of course, numerous other Concord-area businesses also stepped forward with nourishment and support.

The Pesces, however, continue to find new and meaningful ways to support the hospital. They appreciate the care that Emerson has provided to the couple’s family, including sons Andrew, 18 and Jack, 15.

Megan became a Corporator in 2020 and the couple make regular philanthropic gifts to Emerson. In 2021, when patients were still somewhat hesitant to return to the hospital, the Pesces created a partnership with Emerson whereby anyone who made an appointment at the Hermel Breast Health Center for a mammogram received a coupon for a free cup of Dunkin’ coffee or tea.

“Happy customers and happy employees.

If you have those two things, you can do anything,” says Mark Pesce. With 30 years of experience under his belt, the owner of 19 Dunkin’ franchises is no stranger to budgets and balance sheets. But if he had to sum up his business plan in one sentence, that would be it.

In November, 2021, in celebration of the remodel of the Dunkin’ on Thoreau Street in Concord, the couple donated a pound of coffee to anyone who donated a pint of blood at the hospital. As part of the grand re-opening, the store also donated $2,500 to Emerson.

Just last month, the Pesces partnered with Margot Kimball from Art for All for Valentine’s Day. With funding from Megan and Mark, Margot coordinated the creation 40 Valentines thanking hospital employees. The Pesces also added a $5 Dunkin’ gift card to each Valentine.

It is hard to deny the Pesce’s commitment to their community. But before they were business partners, they were partners in life. After college, Mark took a job in Florida overseeing five Dunkin’ locations.

Megan worked at Disney World. They met through friends, began spending time together, later married and moved back home when Mark accepted a position at Dunkin’ Corporate. In 2003, Mark joined two partners and bought a group of

Dunkin’ stores. They grew the business to 60 locations in three states. In 2019, Mark bought the Bay State stores from his partners, Megan closed her own thriving interior design business to join Mark, and the Pesce Network was born. In January, 2020 the Pesces bought four more stores.

Within weeks, the pandemic was surging.

“It was really tough because many of our stores are in towns that don’t allow drive-thrus,” recalls Mark. “Like everyone, we had to pivot quickly.” Mark proudly shares that not one of their stores ever shut down one day during COVID. “With our business, we are not ZOOMing from home,” he says.

Just like Dunkin’, the Pesces recognize that of course Emerson could not shut down either during COVID. Emerson continues to be there for the community with advanced, quality care and the Pesces greatly appreciate having this care available so close to home. They both recognize what a treasure Emerson is for the communities in the region.

The 2021 5k Run~Walk for Cancer Care was held virtually for a second year in a row due to the pandemic. With an initial goal of $110,000 the community came together and raised a record $175,000. Funds raised support cancer patients and their families receiving treatment at Emerson Hospital. Support includes financial assistance with living expenses, patient support groups, nutrition services and other therapeutic services.

Dawn’s Dream Fund was created in honor of Dawn Chapman, a Belmont native and patient at Mass General Cancer Center at Emerson Hospital – Bethke. After Dawn’s death in 2020 from stage-four lung cancer, her daughter and son-in-law, Jen and Dan Sargeant, wanted to support families and patients living with cancer.

As a cancer survivor myself, treated at Emerson, I underwent intensive chemotherapy with many serious side effects. I understand the toll that treatment can take on a patient. It can be a strenuous process even with a strong network; without support it can be overwhelming. When Dawn was diagnosed, Jen and I were her primary caregivers. Knowing the physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial toll that cancer can exert on all those involved, we wanted to create a fund to help make the process easier for patients and caregivers.

Lynn Martin: Emerson exemplifies the power of community Lynn began volunteering at Emerson in 1989, became a corporator in 2002, and shortly after started to support Emerson financially through the Annual Appeal.

In 2009, she joined the Annual Appeal Committee and eventually served as Committee Chair. In addition, she is a member of the Auxiliary and served as a patient advocate and Chair of the Foundation Board.

“I enjoy being a part of the hospital community and learning about the latest advancements in care and Emerson’s clinical affiliations with Mass General Brigham. When someone I know needs care, I guide them appropriately because I know what Emerson is capable of and all of the new service areas and locations developed in recent years.”

For nearly thirty years, Lynn Martin has been an integral part of the Emerson community. She chose Emerson to have two of her three children, and it is where she goes for her health screenings and medical appointments. Many of her loved ones rely on Emerson for life-saving care.

“A friend was having a stroke and arrived at Emerson’s Emergency Department where he received fast, expert evaluation.

Through the 24/7 TeleStroke program, a Mass General Hospital neurologist specializing in stroke care evaluated him via video conference and consulted with

the Emerson neurologist who treated him. Emerson’s Emergency Department was there for him, they did everything right and he is now recovering well.”

Reflecting on when Lynn started to develop a relationship with Emerson, she explains, “I had my first child at a Boston hospital because that was where my obstetrician was located. I chose to have my second child at Emerson. The experience was very different. The people were wonderful, I received amazing care, and it was close to home. It made me think – I really love Emerson.”

Recently, Lynn and her family have become very familiar with Emerson’s Parkinson’s Disease Program. “My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s (PD) a few years ago. His neurologist is with Emerson and he receives physical therapy at Emerson’s Clough Family Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies to increase his mobility and balance. He attends virtual education sessions with Emerson’s care team to learn about the latest advancements in treatment and best practices for living well with PD. Thank goodness we have Emerson in our community and in our lives — we are very grateful.”

Emerson receives very generous gift thanks to thoughtful estate planning Benefactors who include Emerson Hospital as part of their estate plan are recognized as members of the Casper Jenney Society.

Over the years, support from these generous individuals has had a substantial impact on patient care.

In 2021, Emerson was the grateful beneficiary of an unrestricted bequest from the estate of Audrey Chase, who passed at age 92 in 2005. Around Newbury Court in Concord, her last residence, Audrey was known as a bridge player, golf partner, crossword puzzle expert, volunteer, church member and general all around good friend and neighbor.

Undoubtedly, many of Audrey’s strong moral and work ethic traits, as well as those of her four sisters and brother, were likely inherited from her parents, Frederick and Anna R. (Johanssen) Williams. They immigrated to America from Wales around 1911 and settled in Lowell and later Billerica. Audrey was actually born in Llandudno Wales in 1913 during a return visit. Her father came from a family of craftsmen and farmers and had a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Her mother, a highly creative woman, came from Denmark from a family of artists and ships’ captains. Her family was actively involved in the resistance during World War II. According to her nephew Bob Williams, Audrey exuded a very commanding presence but was also a woman of courage and accomplishment. She graduated from Howe High School in Billerica and continued her education in the field of business at Lowell Technological Institute, Boston University, Boston College and the School of Modern Languages. During the war years, Audrey served as a Red Cross nurse’s aide and driver. She was active in the Women’s Club and the Garden Club. Audrey was an officer in the Order of the Eastern Star, President of her Alumni Association and was also a member of the Vesper Country Club.

Audrey was an international traveler. In 1939, she and a friend embarked on a bicycle tour of Europe. “When I traveled around Europe by plane and car, I marveled that my petite aunt would have had the physical strength and personal bravery to do the same on a bicycle,” said her nephew, Bob, during his eulogy to her.

Sometime in the early 1950s, a local travel agency recruited her.

In the early years, she led many of the tours herself, eventually becoming a company Vice President. In 1971, she married Edward Chase, and moved to Concord where she was an active volunteer at Emerson. She shared interests with her husband in photography, reading, golf, bridge and languages.

During her lifetime, Audrey traveled to more than 100 countries and almost as many islands, meeting many famous people in the process. “Her interest in international travel continued into retirement where she and Ted taught themselves Spanish and would speak it to each other exclusively on Mondays,” said Bob. “At almost 93, she lived a full and vigorous life, with her greatest happiness coming from her family and strong relationship with husband Ted.” Audrey and her family were consistent and generous donors to Emerson throughout her lifetime. Generous estate planning enabled her to support the hospital in an even more substantial way after she died. She recognized the value of Emerson Hospital to her quality of life and the community where she lived. Her bequest will help ensure that Emerson remains a strong regional healthcare provider for many years to come.
