Recognizing friends and supporters of Emerson Health

2022-2023

People make the difference.

Emerson – A Name You Can Trust

Emerson provided expectant parents, Chelsea and Michael, with many reasons to trust us with their family’s health. So when it came time to name their newborn, the choice was clear: he was named Emerson.

For Chelsea and Michael, the name echoed the expert care and compassion that surrounded their baby’s arrival. It is where they welcomed their son into the world, and where he received excellent care in the Special Care Nursery until it was time for him to go home. It is also where their older son learned how to be a big brother at the New Sibling class.

The Emerson Fund, formerly called the Annual Appeal, was renamed to capture the Emerson difference. This fund supports departments across our system, directly benefitting our patients and their families. When looking for care that is exceptional and compassionate, we agree with Chelsea. The choice is clear: Emerson Health.

“We knew after the exceptional care he received, the name Emerson was a definite. I will always remember our special experience bringing our own little Emerson into the world.”

Dear Friends,

While the past year was challenging for many healthcare organizations, Emerson Health, with the support of our community, continues to provide quality care. Aligned with our clinical partner, Mass General Brigham, our team remains dedicated to meeting you wherever you are on your health journey. We are proud to share this report on philanthropic funding for Emerson Health for fiscal year 2023. Access to local, high-quality care is more important than ever, and your support is vital. Together, we are making a difference.

In the past fiscal year (October 2022 – September 2023), gifts and pledges to the Emerson Health Foundation totaled over $5.6 million, with more than $1.5 million donated to the Emerson Fund and $3.2 million to the Transforming Health Campaign. The remainder was gifted to essential capital, endowed, and memorial funds. We are fortunate that many people include Emerson in their estate planning.

Your help has allowed us to invest in our clinical staff, equipment, facilities, and community access. Our high marks for quality and safety and the warmth of our compassionate patient experience are evidence of those investments. We are committed to providing premium care with a personal touch close to home.

This report is a testament to the individuals and organizations that contributed to Emerson Health last year. We are incredibly grateful to you and all our generous donors and volunteers. Your contributions have been instrumental in ensuring our ability to care for our region now and in the future. Your generosity is the lifeblood of our organization, and we thank you for your ongoing loyalty to Emerson!

Warmly,

Christine C. Schuster, RN, MBA

Hiking 100 miles through Europe with a Brand-New

Hip

At 69 years young, Keith Watling inspires those who love the great outdoors. He guides hikers all over the White Mountains as a volunteer leader with the Appalachian Mountain Club.

What makes his story remarkable is his fast recovery following total right hip replacement surgery, performed at Emerson by Matthew Sloan, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon and Director of Robotics, using robotic-assisted surgery for optimal results.

In 2019, during a weekend in the White Mountains, Keith slipped climbing a ladder in a hut, crashed to the floor, and fractured his right femur. New Hampshire Search and Rescue carried him down the mountain and transported him to a local hospital where he underwent surgery to stabilize the broken bone. For the next ten weeks, Keith was on crutches and could not drive, much less hike. He recovered, but a few years later he experienced bone-on-bone pain in his hip, as a result of osteoarthritis. He knew he needed expert help. His primary care physician referred him to Dr. Sloan.

“Keith was an outstanding candidate for robotic-assisted hip replacement surgery due to the type of injury he had and his strong athletic condition,” explains Dr. Sloan. “Robotic joint replacement surgery is less invasive, reducing recovery time and leading to more complete healing and patient satisfaction. Keith’s goal was to hike long trails pain-free. We were determined to get him back to what he loves.” In March 2023, Keith had surgery at Emerson.

Then came recovery. A nurse, physical therapist, and occupational therapist with Emerson Home Care visited Keith at home for three weeks to ensure he was healing well and could begin mobility exercises. When he was ready, he went to outpatient physical therapy appointments twice a week.

“As soon as I could, I started walking daily on my new hip.”

“As soon as I could, I started walking daily on my new hip. Nearly six weeks after surgery, I set a goal to do 10,000 steps every day. Dr. Sloan and his team literally got me back on my feet and allowed me to do what I love. I could not have had more expert care,” reflects Keith.

This summer, just four months after surgery, Keith embarked on one of his most ambitious hikes ever – a 100-mile trek through Europe known as the Tour de Mont Blanc. Of the 16 participants, he was the only one sporting a brand-new hip.

“People could not believe it. It is amazing that modern hip replacement had me hiking mountains just months after the procedure. We started in France and continued via steep ascents and descents to Italy, Switzerland, and back into France. We hiked over 10 miles a day amidst the most exhilarating scenery and spectacular views. I experienced no issues with my hip whatsoever. Without this surgery, I would have had to stop hiking the mountains that I so love! I am very grateful to Dr. Sloan and his team.”

Today, Keith is busy hiking locally and planning his next adventures, including completion of “The White Mountains Grid” – hiking each of New Hampshire’s forty eight 4,000-foot peaks in every month of the year – a total of 576 summits. He only has ten more to go! Keith’s experience proves that with expert medical care, hard work, and ambitious goals, the summit is within reach.

A Grateful Patient:

Michelle Mercier doesn’t seem like the type of person who has a minute to spare. To say her life is busy, doesn’t quite cover it. Michelle is a business growth consultant, has created and hosts The Resilient Entrepreneur podcast (whose 150 episodes has a five-star review rating). Also, she is a wife and mother of two young boys, ages 7 and 11 who have complex medical issues, as does Michelle.

“I have been to the Emerson Emergency Department more times than I can count,” says Michelle, a long-time Hudson resident. While she may not fit the profile of the typical community volunteer, many of whom turn to volunteerism upon retirement, it is precisely Michelle’s experience with Emerson that made her determined to include giving back as part of her life’s balancing act.

Michelle Mercier

“It’s really not a heavy lift,” says Michelle, who has been a Corporator since 2020, where she serves on the Orientation Committee, and most recently was among the hosts of the highly successful Corporator and Auxiliary sponsored educational event, A VIP Evening for Women’s Health.

Michelle’s introduction to Emerson began as it does for many. She delivered her first child at the Clough Birthing Center; however, things did not go smoothly. Her infant had aspiration and gastrointestinal issues, and ankyloglossia (tong-tie) which required surgery. Her second child had an even more complicated birthing experience.

“I have been to the Emergency Department more times than I can count.”

He arrived three weeks early, and also suffered from gastrointestinal issues, as well as a litany of heart issues, a compromised immune system, as well as laryngomalacia (a congenital softening of the larynx tissues).

“We were back and forth between MGH and Children’s Hospital, but we always felt that Emerson was our home base,” says Michelle in describing the first few years of her children’s lives. “They were always so amazing to us. It wasn’t just the quality of care, but also the personal

touch.” Michelle describes the PIT (Pediatric Intervention Team) Coping Kits, a bag of therapeutic toys that help ease a child’s anxiety – and something that each child who enters the Emergency Department receives – as being particularly helpful.

Michelle’s personal experience with Emerson, however, did not end with her children. Not long after her second son was born, Michelle required knee surgery. That was followed by a diagnosis of parathyroidism – also requiring surgery. She then discovered she was suffering from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. All were treated at Emerson Health.

“It’s overwhelming dealing with a medical emergency,” says Michelle. “Emerson is a great resource. It brings to the table an environment that is less intimidating. Also,” she adds, “their quality of care is amazing.”

While Michelle and her children’s medical odysseys have been frightening, it has brought clarity of mind about the importance of having a vital community health care system. Without the support of the community, such a health care system cannot survive. “It’s important to give back, and stay connected,” she says. “If there is a way for me to pay forward, I will do it.”

Moreover, Michelle says it was important to her to turn her experience into something positive. By giving both her time and financial resources to Emerson, she is doing just that.

AN EVENING OF W OMEN’S HEAL TH

In November, The Corporators and Auxiliary of Emerson Health sponsored their first live post pandemic community event at the Umbrella Arts Center in Concord. The VIP Evening of Women’s Health offered a special opportunity to hear from Emerson clinicians about women’s healthcare issues in a relaxed and festive setting. More than 175 women from many area towns attended. Emerson President & CEO Christine Schuster welcomed guests and introduced the distinguished panel of presenters.

One guest remarked, “I was extremely impressed with the information. The speakers were approachable and engaging.”

14

ANEVENINGOFWOMEN’SHEALTH

Following the presentation, guests enjoyed festive seasonal beverages and lite bites provided by WECO Hospitality. Energy was high and guests flowed freely between lively conversation and informational tables highlighting women’s healthcare issues. Many Emerson staff members were present, providing a unique opportunity for the community to connect with physicians and clinicians.

Event sponsors included Concord OB/Gyn, Sharon Mendosa Group at Compass Realty, UnderSkin and WECO Hospitality.

The Auxiliary may be a supporting player in the Emerson Health story, but it is not hyperbole to say that without the Auxiliary, it is unlikely there would be an Emerson. When it was created in 1924, the Auxiliary’s very purpose was to raise funds and save the fledgling 14-bed hospital. It was on the brink of closure –just 13 years after opening.

“Emerson would not be what it is today, without the support of the Auxiliary,” says Leslie Cheney, who has been an active Auxilian for more than half a century, and served as the organization’s Co-President from 1974 to 1976.

A History Worth Celebrating

from starting gift and coffee shops in the 1960’s, to supporting the proposed new Emergency Department.

Over these last 100 years, the Auxiliary has been particularly crucial during serious crises. From The Great Depression and World War II, to the far more recent COVID-19 pandemic, members simply pitched in to keep the hospital running.

In the 1930’s that meant mending bed linens and soliciting food donations to feed patients. In the 1940’s, it required members to meet critical staff shortages. They served as nurses’ aides, and even washed dishes and cleaned patient rooms. More recently, when it was uncertain if Emerson could secure enough medical-grade masks for its staff during the pandemic’s early days, the Auxiliary went into overdrive making hundreds of cloth masks. It also funded the pandemic pop-up, the BWell Center, a relaxation space used by staff to manage the stress of working through pandemic conditions.

While the Auxiliary has always relished rolling up its sleeves and getting into the trenches, it has also helped Emerson financially. Auxiliary funding, which has exceeded $6 million in the last 40 years, has supported many special projects –

Raising funds for such big endeavors, however important, is just one component of the Auxiliary’s value, says Cheney, who herself is responsible for helping to launch the Auxiliary’s single biggest annual fundraiser, The Auxiliary of Emerson Health’s Annual Golf Tournament.

Cheney reflects that among the things that have contributed to Emerson’s stature is its determination to provide a continuum of care, hire the best professionals, and create strategic partnerships. What truly sets Emerson apart, and has made it a revered community resource is, quite simply, its heart. Perhaps here is where the Auxiliary has made the most difference – by enhancing the patient experience.

“We have lots of tentacles in the community we represent,” says Cheney of her fellow Auxilians. “We impart knowledge about the health system and its services” Not the least of that knowledge, says Cheney, is that “Emerson has become world class.”

It does this by focusing its resources on a vast array of patient-touch items. The most well known of these may be its handmade teddy bears. Children who enter the hospital receive a stuffed animal to help make their medical experience a bit less scary. To aid them therapeutically, they also receive PIT (Pediatric Intervention Team) Coping Kits, filled with toys to help calm and distract both the child and the parent.

Similarly, all Emergency Department adolescent patients, who require behavioral health services, receive Anchor Bags. At the Clough Birthing Center, newborns are welcomed with sleep sacks. Patients at the Naka Infusion Center receive handmade quilts to keep them comfortable during treatment. In pediatric surgery, children are outfitted with keepsake superhero johnnies to help them brave their hospital journey. And that’s to name just a few!

The Auxiliary is also the financial engine behind such important services as The Aphasia Conversation Group which helps stroke survivors, and others with this acquired language disorder, practice functional communication, as well as the iCanShine Bike Camp for children with special needs. If we were to list every project, service, or hand-crafted item which the Auxiliary has supplied or supported, nobody would believe it.

As the Auxiliary plans for the future, President Liza Carey says their efforts to distinguish Emerson from other hospitals will continue. “We’re actively exploring avenues to enhance the relevance, vibrancy, and value of our Auxiliary within Emerson Health and the community.” And if past is truly prologue, the Auxiliary will remain a vital partner well into the next century.

Randi and Paul Levine Give Back

If a marketing department dreamed up the perfect spokespeople, they might look something like Lexington residents Randi Klein Levine and her husband Paul Levine. Emerson

“Some people can only give money. And some people can only give time. But if you can do both,” says Paul, “all the better.”

Health cheerleaders to the core, they quite literally wear their devotion on their sleeves – or at least thereabouts. Randi claims she practically lives in her Emerson-insignia fleece vest, and Paul often favors a “Donate for Life” tee shirt from the Blood Donation Center.

However superficial the clothes may be, for the Levine’s they are an outward representation of their long standing and deep commitment to Emerson Health. Not only do they provide financial support, they have volunteered thousands of hours of their time. And in Paul’s case – a lot of blood! For the past 25 years, he has been donating blood at Emerson as often as he can.

“It’s a great way to help the hospital save a few dollars,” says Paul lightly. Every pint of blood a person donates to Emerson, he notes, is one less pint it has to buy.

Paul, who has been a lifelong blood donor, began donating almost exclusively to Emerson because of its convenience and proximity. Randi’s affiliation with the hospital began much the same way. She was also influenced because their daughter’s pediatrician was associated with Emerson. She has been volunteering on and off (but mostly on) since the mid-1980s.

“I see myself as analytic. I’m particular, and I pay attention to detail,” says Randi, whose career in business information systems made her a perfect fit for the Hospice Program who was looking for volunteers with computer expertise.

However, it wasn’t until 2018, that Paul followed in Randi’s footsteps. He decided to scale back his work life which, over 42 years, spanned the worlds of high tech and private equity, as well as education. Paul was an adjunct lecturer at the Boston University School of Management for 10 years.

“I was at sixes and sevens,” says Paul in describing his glidepath to retirement. When Randi, who by that time was using her computer skills in the Community Services Department, suggested volunteering at Emerson, he was skeptical. Randi reasoned to Paul, “Try it. If you don’t like, you don’t have to do it.’”

Nearly six years later – with a break at COVID’s outset – Paul is still volunteering. He works in the Transport Department moving both equipment and patients, who do not require medical staff assistance, throughout the hospital. While he notes that this work may not require the skills or brainpower of his career, he nonetheless finds it rewarding.

“It’s volunteer work that really makes a difference,” says Paul, who relishes interactions with patients and his ability to potentially make someone more comfortable, be it emotionally or physically. He adds that working in transport helps free up the clinical staff to do what they do best – attending to patients.

Paul and Randi value their volunteering at Emerson particularly because they do it together. “It’s sweet,” says Randi, that she and Paul drive to Emerson Health together, and check in with each other during the day. “It’s a shared experience,” adds Paul. “And it has expanded our circle of people we know together.”

Randi and Paul have also donated financially almost as long as Randi has been volunteering. During the pandemic, they became even more aware of the truly vital role Emerson Health plays in the community and decided they wanted to increase their giving.

“Some people can only give money. And some people can only give time. But if you can do both,” says Paul, “all the better.”

Honoring Generations of Care

Hollis and Caroline (Petersen) Holden’s deep connection to Emerson Health began over 90 years ago. A lifelong Concordian, Caroline “Petey” Holden was born at Emerson Hospital, the daughter of Norwegian immigrants who made their home in West Concord. Hollis “Holly” Holden was born in Waltham and raised in Belmont. Following his service in the United States Army during World War II, he married Petey, and they settled in West Concord, where they lived in the same house, just a few miles from Emerson, until their passing. This proximity to such quality care proved to be highly desirable on numerous occasions over the years. In the 1950’s, the birth of their three children at Emerson involved very different circumstances: the first, Gary, was born via a C-section (at that time, a complicated operation involving a vertical incision); the second, Nancy, was born 2½ months early and was blessed to occupy a brand-new incubator generously donated by the Kussin Family of Concord; the third, tragically, was stillborn.

Emerson Health’s doctors, nurses, and staff played an important role in helping this young couple through these challenging times. Petey would later recount with great affection how the towering Dr. McDonald would visit her in her hospital room after the birth of her tiny, preemie daughter and ask her with his soft, caring voice how she was doing. In appreciation, Petey served for years as a “candy striper” volunteer at Emerson and throughout her life gave rides to neighbors and friends to and from the hospital.

Holly “gave back” to the hospital in an unconventional way: at his machine shop next to the post office in West Concord, he had frequent visitors (including doctors from

Emerson) who knew of his ability to problem solve. They would stop by to ask if he could fix any number of things, which he did with great joy and often with no charge. As for their daughter Nancy, she had a special agreement with Emerson where she worked in the coffee shop during the summer months in the early 1970’s - she jogged from home to the hospital, change of clothes in hand, and had access to a small shower area to get ready and don her uniform. This arrangement allowed her to earn spending money for college. When Holly’s mother, Jennie (“Neena”) Holden was in her 80’s, she fell, broke her hip, and spent some time at Emerson. In appreciation for their excellent care, she gave the nurses a special treat. In a small hospital courtyard where Holly had brought her harp, Neena sat, clad in a long flowing dress, and with her eyes misting and looking skyward, she proceeded to play her favorite love songs, starting with “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Years later, having just turned 90 in 2011, when Holly found himself at Emerson with a stroke, despite his setback, he carried on his mother’s musical mission: with a spirit of thankfulness, he played a host of tunes on his harmonica to bring joy to anyone who would listen.

When it came time for the Holdens to think about their estate planning, they acknowledged their appreciation for the topnotch care they consistently received at Emerson throughout their long lives by each making a generous bequest to the hospital. The Holdens’ support through a planned gift was a tribute to the many years of quality care they and their family members received from Emerson Health.
