This past year has been like no other in most of our lifetimes. The pandemic has been challenging for all of us; however, our frontline workers have remained stalwart beacons for safe patient care. The community has stepped forward to provide support in so many ways, and for that, we are incredibly appreciative.

With great pride, we share with you this report on philanthropic funding to Emerson Hospital for fiscal year 2020. Emerson’s impact on the communities we serve is more important than ever before, just as your support remains critically important to our future. We are very fortunate to have so many donors and volunteers who step forward each year to support our community’s health and wellness. Together, we are truly making a difference.

During the first surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020, we shut down all our routine and elective services to prepare for patients. That loss of income, combined with the investments we made to prepare for COVID-19 patients, put a significant strain on our finances and caused the Hospital to experience its first financial loss in a dozen years. The hundreds of new donors who stepped forward last year and provided philanthropic support helped soften that financial blow. We feel very thankful to be in such a supportive community.

We remain committed to maintaining Emerson’s independence while deepening our clinical affiliation with Mass General Brigham. We continue to make capital investments in our Hospital to meet the demands and expectations of all those we serve. These investments in our clinical staff, equipment, and facilities continue to reap rewards, with the Hospital receiving high marks for the quality of our care as well as the warmth of our compassionate patient experience.

In the past fiscal year (October 2019–September 2020), gifts and commitments to the Emerson Health Care Foundation totaled over $5.2 million. Over $1.9 million of those dollars were donated to the Annual Appeal. The remainder of the giving was directed toward various essential capital, endowed, memorial, and COVID-19 specific funds.

Emerson Hospital relies on you and all of our generous supporters and volunteers. On the following pages, we recognize all individuals and organizations that helped us further extend the Emerson difference in advanced, quality care. In this report, we share two profiles that showcase examples of the generations of families who donate their time and resources to support the Hospital. We are incredibly grateful to them and all of our friends and supporters.

For Matt Boger, supporting Emerson Hospital is a long-standing family tradition. Matt, the son of Dr. Bill Boger and his wife Barbara, grew up in Concord and is now an active Emerson Corporator.

Matt serves as a member of the Corporator Executive Committee and co-chairs the Corporator Orientation Committee with another well-respected Emerson Corporator, Walter Birge.

“I grew up seeing how engaged and committed people were to the organizations that make Concord and this area so wonderful,” said Matt. “Emerson Hospital is a vitally important institution in our community — one that helps so many and it is critically important that we support and champion it.”

“As a child, I visited Emerson often to see my dad, who was a pediatric ophthalmologist with Lexington Eye Associates.”

(Dr. Boger is now retired but is still actively involved with the Emerson Foundation Board.) “Emerson has been a part of my life for decades. Four generations of our family have been treated there — starting with my grandparents and continuing to today with my own children.”

“I probably canoed past Emerson a thousand times on the Sudbury River.

The location of Emerson itself on that river, surrounded by woods, is very Concord and Thoreau-like – embracing and being part of our beautiful natural surroundings. In the eighth grade, I visited a friend who broke his arm in a wrestling tournament and the room he was in had a fantastic view of that river.

lived up to what my friend, Dr. Henry Valliant, would list as the three vital ‘A’s of medical practice — Ability, Availability and Affability. Everyone on the Emerson medical staff embodies all three of those traits. Today, I am very familiar with the advanced training of the doctors and clinical staff at Emerson, with a number of nationally-known specialists in their respective fields. It is unusual for a community hospital and truly lifts Emerson into a higher league than you would typically expect to find right here in your own community.”

In appreciation for this level of care, Matt recognizes the importance of giving back — to Emerson — as well as to other important parts of Concord and the greater community. His professional work in State Relations for New England Donor Services helps support the coordination of organ and tissue donation through-

out New England. Closer to home, he is involved with the Concord Public Library, the Concord Public Schools, The Fenn School and is becoming involved with the Concord Museum. Matt is also a Deacon at Trinitarian Congregational Church, serves on the Board of Nashoba Brooks School and is Chair of the Concord Democratic Town Committee.

Emerson runs deepest in Matt’s roots and personal commitment. His dad, Dr. Boger, noted, “Our parents received wonderful care at Emerson. Barbara and I have both been treated there and now, of course, Matt and his family have benefited from the compassion and expertise that are the hallmarks of Emerson. I am very proud to see Matt following in our family’s philanthropic footprints and continuing our long tradition of helping to bring excellent medical care to Concord and the surrounding communities.”

Stepping up to support Emerson during the pandemic Michelle Hanlon and her son Clark help the Auxiliary go virtual For over 100 years, the greater Concord community has always strongly supported Emerson. This past pandemic year saw an unprecedented level of generosity for the hospital and its health care heroes. When COVID-19 first struck last March, many families selflessly stepped up for the first time to stand behind our physicians and nurses at this critical time.

Michelle Hanlon and her son Clark from Acton are one incredible example.

“When the pandemic started, we quickly realized that Emerson would need extra help,” said Michelle, who is a Professor of Taxation and Accounting at the MIT Sloan School of Management. “I joined the amazing Emerson Hospital Auxiliary last year. Soon thereafter, the Auxiliary sent out a request for help in harnessing technology to enable members and the community at large to stay connected, as Massachusetts shifted everything to an online environment.”

Michelle mentioned it to her son Clark, a 16-year old junior at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School and a member of both the rowing team and the Nordic Ski team. “Our school was offering a hybrid learning model with some learning at home and some at school. With many extra-curricular activities cancelled, I found that I had a lot more time on my hands,” explained Clark. “I suddenly had the freedom of both time and location to volunteer and I thought this would be a great opportunity.”

Clark became involved in creating and editing videos for Auxiliary events. His first project was a thank you video to hospital heroes which was shown at the Auxiliary’s virtual Annual Meeting last October to

rave reviews. That work led to one of his most ambitious projects — turning the hospital’s annual Tree of Lights ceremony into a successful and moving online event. “Traditionally, Tree of Lights helps mark the start of the holiday season at Emerson where the community comes together to pay tribute to those who have touched our lives,” explained Deb Van Walsum, Auxiliary President.

“Our Tree of Lights gathering reminds us of the value of living in a world where we care for one another and the importance of being connected to people around us,” she added. “Clark’s moving video, which can be found on emersonhospital.org, was incredibly

successful in helping to illuminate hope and remember those we love,” said Deb. “Tree of Lights helps support a healing environment, so characteristic of Emerson, with space for quiet reflection.

With Clark’s assistance, we were able to continue this important tradition, which took on even greater significance in the pandemic.”

“We are very lucky to have a hospital of Emerson’s caliber close by,” said Michelle.

“I am very glad that our family is able to help sustain the critical work that is so needed in this challenging time.”

2020 5K RUN~WALK FOR CANCER CARE

The annual 5k Run~Walk for Cancer Care went virtual in May 2020 over a 15-day period. With an initial goal of raising $75,000, we quickly sailed past that number and raised $103,000. All funds raised provide compassionate care, including acupuncture, massage therapy, transportation, and other therapeutic services for Emerson Hospital cancer patients.

The Hindle family exemplifies generational giving

Honoring benefactors who have included Emerson Hospital in their estate plan or life income fund.

Their dedication to Emerson includes volunteering and financial support By watching their parents, children learn about the impact of philanthropy and giving one’s time and talent to important organizations. That was true for Sarah Hindle when she was growing up in Oak Park, Illinois. “My mom volunteered at our community hospital, and I volunteered there one summer,” she recalls.

“I’m fascinated by medicine.”

Emerson Hospital became important when she and her late husband, Win Hindle, settled in Concord in 1965. Before long, each of them was volunteering.

Sarah currently is serving her second term as a hospital corporator.

“I like what they do,” she says in reference to Emerson’s corporators, often referred to as “ambassadors,” who spread the word about hospital programs.

“Attending the various talks by surgeons and others keeps me informed.”

When Win retired from his distinguished career at Digital Equipment, he directed his focus to Emerson. “It became his full-time hobby,” Sarah notes. “He was learning, and he had a lot to offer the hospital.” In short order, he was elected to the Board of Directors, then chaired the Emerson Health Care Foundation and helped lead a successful capital campaign.

“Dad brought his business integrity to his work at Emerson,” says Karen Donoghue, one of their daughters.

“He was fascinated by the weekly medical rounds, and he helped the hospital establish quality initiatives, something he had overseen at Digital.”

“I believe everyone who worked with Dad appreciated his strong ethics,” adds Gail Hindle.

Not surprisingly, Gail and Karen have each volunteered their time and energy at Emerson. “When I was in junior high school, I was a member of Emerson’s junior auxiliary,” Gail explains. “We helped run events to raise funds, especially for kids’ programs.”

Karen serves as a corporator, an Emerson Auxiliary board member and manages the gallery at the Clough Family Center for Rehabilitative and Sports Therapies.

Like her father, she is a member of the hospital’s Foundation Board. “We’ve seen Emerson grow by determining what the community needs,” Karen says.

The popular Steinberg Wellness Center for Mind and Body is one example, Gail notes. “The hospital created a great wellness center that I utilize a lot and promote whenever I can.”

Gail and Karen acknowledge that they were brought up with the understanding that philanthropy is important. Win and Sarah always supported Emerson financially, as do Gail and Karen, continuing the tradition. The family gives through the Annual Appeal, by supporting capital campaigns and through planned gifts.

Win left a substantial bequest to the hospital. Other family members have also set up bequest intentions.

Living in Concord, they are reminded of the impact of their philanthropy. One day, an acquaintance at Newbury Court, the retirement home where Sarah lives, approached her. “She said ‘I just want to thank you,’ and I asked why,” Sarah recalls. “She explained that her husband had been a patient at Emerson for the past week, and he had spent a few days on the Critical Care Unit.

“She saw our names on a plaque at the entrance to the unit and wanted to tell me how fantastic the care and the staff had been.”

Gail observed a similar display of gratitude when she was dining out with her parents. “My neighbor and her husband came over to say hello, and when I introduced her to Win and Sarah Hindle, she put it together,” says Gail.
