On March 3, 2007, members of EMC’s five national boards, some committee members, and national staff members gathered to consider this.

Moderator Ron Penner said to remember that what we do is done for Christ. The boards presented vignettes of positive developments since 2004 and later met to discuss their specific future efforts. Much of the day was spent in discussion, both together and in small groups.

Our conference’s identified challenges that are common among denominations: To nurture leadership, educate within and beyond our congregations, develop new congregations, build stronger conferencelocal church ties, be biblical, have a holistic message, and more.

Participants were asked for their dreams. If all of the suggested church

plants occur, by 2010 we will have churches in five new cities, two French-speaking congregations, eight new churches ministering to Low German people, and five English-speaking congregations in provinces we aren’t currently in.

One lunch comment bears repeating: One person envisioned a stronger relationship with churches beyond Mennonite conferences. I concur. At about 1.5 million members connected with Mennonite World Conference (and others not), the Anabaptist Church worldwide remains a tiny body; Baptists alone have 110 million. There’s a need to affirm both our connections with the Anabaptist segment and wider parts of the Christian Church.

Young people and EMC

H

ow well do we retain young people?

Some mainline denominations grapple with young people being confirmed and then dropping out of congregational life. Being confirmed means that a person’s inherited faith has become their own and affirms on-going involvement in congregational life. Some young people, though, treat confirmation class as though it’s a subject to be taken and forgotten.

How many of our young people are baptized and then drop out? How do we involve young people within our congregational meetings? How many teenagers and those in their 20s are nominated for national boards and committees? Various voices ask: How do we get more young people to our national convention?

Conference Youth Minister Gerald Reimer refers to a U.S. statistic that says a majority of Christian young people who attend secular post-secondary institutions

become inactive in congregational life. He doesn’t see that happening as much in EMC circles, but we don’t want to go there.

How many of our young people are baptized and then drop out? How do we involve young people within our congregations?

We can blame the big, bad, secular institutions (too easy) or look at how we relate to young people making many changes at once (more challenging). For instance, does the level of critical thought and study we allow within our churches prepare young people for what they will encounter elsewhere? If not, we do young people a disservice.

coming events More churches needed

Canada seems to fear God, avoid church—this was a headline in the Winnipeg Free Press (April 15, 2006).

The report of the survey says, among other things, “religious beliefs among Canadians remain as strong as they were a decade ago, but church attendance has slipped.” See also MACLEAN’S (November 20, 2006) where a survey established that mainstream organized religions in Canada are struggling.

If this is the case, then we need to applaud the recent EMC emphasis on church planting (Walking by Faith: A Challenge for Planting Churches, The Messenger, December 6, 2006).

Planting new churches in Canada by our conference did not happen much prior to 1949, at which time our whole conference consisted of five churches in Canada. However, we should not fail to mention The Western Gospel Mission (1946–1961), a partly EMC organized body that also planted churches which, however, were not under the conference umbrella.

But changes were on the way. By 1969 the EMC Yearbook records, according to my count, we had grown to 36 churches!

You might ask, “What happened?”

Who was the firebrand who started all these additional churches? Although one could name persons, it seems also that God gave us a special era of grace.

It was not just one church planter that did it all. No, EMC churches sprung up by different means—and a book could be written about this.

Some churches came about through what we called colonization at that time.

Some farmers would join forces and launch out, maybe 100 miles distant, to begin a new settlement and, of course, establish an EMC church there. This sent a group of potential missionaries into an area without budget restraints on missions’ coffers.

Other churches sprung up as a result of revivals—Swift Current, Vanderhoof and Burns Lake, for instance. Others were a legacy of the Western Gospel Mission.

Still others happened via outreach by individual established EMC churches.

One might be inclined to say we had churches dropping into our lap. Maybe in some instances, yes. But on the other hand, I think this was also a special dispensation from the Lord requiring

men and women of faith and vision, sometimes in the face of difficulties.

But in a sense it was as if we were suddenly liberated and given a window of opportunity for unprecedented expansion. Maybe it could be likened to Queen Esther’s coming to the kingdom “for such a time of this.” And by the grace of God there were men and women who took up the challenge.

Yes, I believe the renewed emphasis on church planting is very much in place and should command a prominent place in our overall budget. An item in the All Boards Visioning Day—Summary Observations (2004) also supports this: “Conference Boards and staff are increasingly looking to the churches to catch the vision for Canadian church planting.”

oubts are at home on Easter Day! They are not forbidden; rather, they are welcome. The Easter account contains many doubts, and such honesty comforts us as people of faith.

Comforted through doubts Women go to a tomb with spices to prepare Jesus’ body. They know Jesus is dead, and they expect him to stay that way. When they find the stone rolled away and the body gone, they are shocked.

They are, in an understatement, “wondering about this” (Luke 24:2–8).

They go straight to the disciples. But the men “did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense” (Luke 24:11). Men dismiss the women’s report. While the women aren’t trusted (perhaps partly because of views about their gender at that time), it’s a statement that bears the mark of historical accuracy.

But Peter gets curious. He goes to the tomb, looks in, sees the wrappings, and he, too, wonders “what had happened” (Luke 24:12). The Gospel of John says two people run. One looks and believes Jesus is risen; Peter looks and is puzzled (John 20:3–9).

Such likable honesty! Peter doesn’t know what to make of the empty tomb. Something happened, but what?

The empty tomb has always gotten a mixed response. Some people look at it and believe; to others, like Peter, the empty tomb isn’t proof, only part of the puzzle. If you’re puzzled by the empty tomb, you’re in good company.

The early disciples’ doubts don’t just centre on the tomb; they focus on the Risen Christ as well. They are talking about reports that Jesus is risen when Christ is suddenly in their midst (Luke 24:33–36). What is their response? “They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost” (Luke 24:37). Logically, they look for any other explanation. The so-called ghost speaks: “Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” And “they still could not believe it because of joy and amazement” (Luke 24:38, 41).

Their doubts and confusion shine through. They are tough to convince. Perhaps we think the early disciples come from a simpler time, but they aren’t fools. They are honest enough to write of their doubt and confusion, and that helps us.

Doubt plays a positive role. It protects against immediate acceptance without good grounds. It gives psychological leeway. It leads to maturity, to faith becoming our own. Doubt at Easter comforts because, just as he did with earlier disciples, Jesus deals tenderly with us and can lead us to faith.

Comforted through faith A man once said, “I spent 20 years trying to come to terms with my doubts. Then one day it dawned on me that I had better come to terms with my faith.

Now I have passed from the agony of questions I cannot answer into…answers I cannot escape.” In other words, faith in Christ isn’t a neat package, but it’s worthwhile.

The early disciples thought they had a neat package—till Jesus was crucified. Then, they viewed Jesus as a failure, thought they had followed him three years for nothing, and even returned to fishing. But the unexpected happens: They encounter the Risen Christ, and, despite their initial skepticism and hesitation, are convinced.

by Jesus, one dies in despair before Jesus was put to death, one denies him publicly, and the others flee. When Jesus dies, Peter and John (of the Twelve) and women watch the crucifixion. Then they join the others in fear for their lives behind locked doors (John 20:19).

Yet just a short time later, in the midst of the city where Jesus was tried, within view of where he was crucified and his body buried, the disciples proclaim his resurrection. They persist despite flogging, prison, and death. What changed? They met the Risen Christ. Who leads in proclaiming this?

The faith of the first Christians does not force us to believe, but it invites us to. We aren’t called to a blind faith. We are free to consider the evidence and join those who, having considered it, have believed.

the change? “The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon” (Luke 24:34; 1 Corinthians 15:5).

While Scripture mentions only one disciple clearly being convinced by the empty tomb, it records that hundreds were convinced by seeing the Risen Christ.

Paul says that Jesus appeared to 500 at one time, “most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:1–10). Church of Scotland scholar Archibald M. Hunter writes that Paul seems to say to those with doubts: “Most of the witnesses are still alive to be questioned.” They’re invited to check the record, look into the eyes of early witnesses, decide—and to follow.

Would it be helpful if someone opposed to the movement, a real skeptic, became convinced? We have one: Saul of Tarsus who becomes a disciple after he meets the Risen Lord on the road to Damascus (Acts 9). What if Jesus’ own family believed? Earlier, they had thought he was “out of his mind” (Mark 3:31). Yet who becomes a leader in Jerusalem? James, the half-brother of Jesus.

Why the change? Paul says simply, “He appeared to James” (1 Corinthians 15:7).

the witness that comes partly through your doubts. I believe that Christ died and then appeared to you.”

Comforted through Christ What does Easter mean? Peter Wyatt, an United Church minister, says the resurrection of Jesus is “God’s unmistakable ratification of Jesus, his confirmation that everything Jesus stood for, taught, and claimed to be, was true…The resurrection is God’s seal and signature on Jesus Christ.” As the apostle Peter said to a crowd long ago, “You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead” (Acts 3:15).

Jesus says, “He who has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). Sin has been dealt with; the ransom is paid (Mark 10:45). Death becomes a temporary separation. “Christ Jesus has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” (2 Timothy 1:10). Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25).

Further, we look for a new creation. The end

purpose of the world lies in God’s good hands (Romans 8:19–25). We might reasonably fear world unrest, global warming, nuclear weapons, and more.

God, however, has a good plan and future for his world—and much for us to do.

As Peter says, “We are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13). We can, in Arlie Hoover’s term, become a “cosmic optimist.” Creation will one day be freed from its bondage to decay, including humankind with its brokenness shown in “falling short” of what God intends (Romans 3:23).

Today’s Christians can be comforted because the early disciples both doubted and then believed.

Our Risen Lord said to the early disciples, “You are witnesses of these things” (Luke 24:48). And we are T also. M Rev. Terry M. Smith is Executive Secretary to the Board of Church Ministries.

y Granddad William Wills wasn’t a simple man. He just liked things simple.

He provided for my Mom’s family by working the same job—a steel mill in northwestern Ontario for over 30 years. He never seemed to be in a rush and would do everything slowly and methodically, like chewing each bite of his food at least thirty times before swallowing—meals around my grandparents were all day events.

My Dad loves to tell the story of when he first met his soon to be in-laws. Granddad was renovating a room in the house and needed to make a door smaller. He took the door off, carried it to the backyard and started shortening the door—with an axe.

It eventually fit, just not that well.

Once every five years we would have a family reunion with my grandparents’ whole family—my mom, her one brother, and a busload of her sisters and their families. Most of those memories have faded. There is one, however, that is as real to me as the morning it happened.

My Mom had told me Granddad had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Being eleven I didn’t really know what that meant, but I was about to find out.

As I was saying goodbye to Granddad and giving him a hug, he looked down and said, “We’ll see you later, David.” I looked up past his bushy grey beard to his eyes that were almost the same colour. He must have seen the confused look on my face—David was one of my cousins.

“Oh, sorry about that,” he stammered. “My memory isn’t very good any more.”

The look in his eyes said a lot. I didn’t know what to say to make the awkwardness go away, but for some reason I still had my arms around his waist as I looked up his 6-foot, four-inch frame. I didn’t want to go anywhere. It seemed wrong to leave.

“I’m Bill,” I finally said quietly.

He got a twinkle in his eyes.

“That’s right…our Billy.”

I buried my head back into my Granddad and squeezed him as tight as I could.

“Bye, Granddad.”

He held me tight for a few seconds and then let me go.

“We will see you again, Billy.”

I turned, thinking I wasn’t so sure. A few years later Granddad went home to be with Jesus.

I’m glad that isn’t where the story ends.

The truth of the matter is that our goodbyes on earth are not the end of the story. Perhaps the end of a chapter. A pause in the dialogue. But not the end of the story.

That is the central theme of this coming Easter weekend. Crucifixion Friday was not the end of the Jesus-story. There was a Resurrection Sunday.

It is because of what happened Resurrection Sunday that we have faith. Faith that there is more to this life than simply living our years until it’s over. of those who will be raised to life again. Just as we are now like Adam, the man of the earth, so we will someday be like Christ, the man from heaven. When this happens then at last the Scriptures will come true: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ How we thank God, who gives us victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (see 1 Corinthians 15).

We celebrate this weekend because it is the very foundation of our faith and hope. This life is not our entire story.

hen my Granddad said goodbye to me it wasn’t the end. One day the trumpet call of God will sound. Our bodies will be changed, transformed from physical ones to heavenly ones. I will meet him and he won’t have me confused with my cousin. He’ll remember my name. He’ll have that twinkle in his eyes as he says, “Hi, Billy, good to see you again.

Let’s go meet Jesus.”

That is the hope of the Resurrection. That is why we celebrate, not just this Sunday, but also every Sunday. Jesus was the first to rise from the dead and join His father in heaven; and, as we surrender to His love, mercy and grace, He won’t T be the last. The child on my lap

A

t first I was loathe to let him sit on my lap. He was dirty, smelled bad, and wore only a shirt no less dirty than he was.

It was probably his gaunt body and eyes— so guileless and innocent, pleading, and far too weary for his five or six years of life—that made me reach out and pull him onto my lap. He snuggled close to me and rested his head on my previously white shirt.

My white skin puzzled him. He was constantly feeling my hands and arms, playing with my fingers, and slapping my palm with his tiny black hand. He stared at my face and touched my cheeks, chin, lips, eyebrows, and hair. It confused him, and he kept trying to understand it.

Children like that little boy in the Turkana church in Kakuma, Kenya, with their realness, innocence, and uninhibited wonder and curiosity, kept me sane when I was tired of the efforts of adapting to another culture, language, and lifestyle. But that boy not only entertained me through a long unintelligible service, he also opened my eyes to a new understanding of the Father’s heart of God.

Jesus’ description of the Father’s welcome of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15 is perhaps the most poignant picture of God’s Father heart for his children. But when we are used to approaching God as a Ruler to whom we are subject, it’s sometimes difficult to grasp the security, dependency, and responsibility of our role as children.

As the boy sat on my lap and studied my features, he drew a picture of God’s Father love for us and what it means to sit on His lap.

He takes us up onto his lap and loves us regardless of how dirty and sinful we are. He cuddles us and delights in our wonder of him and our discovery as we touch his face and his hands and try to figure out who he is.

He invites us onto his lap as children who know they haven’t done and can’t do anything to earn their place on his lap, but come anyway because they are invited and they are loved.

Sitting on someone’s lap, you are special, chosen, no longer part of the crowd of children sitting on the floor.

You are an individual and have the sole attention of the person holding you.

‘Into all the world’ begins at home

Last year they went to the inner city of Winnipeg to minister. This year twenty-two students of Steinbach Bible College came to northern Manitoba, and shared their faith in Jesus Christ in seven different communities around Thompson.

Continental Mission is pleased to facilitate their week of cross-cultural ministry. For several days in “the month where it starts to get bright again” the students experienced life and ministry with the First People. Most of them had the privilege of staying in a home with a Native family where someone kindly moved over to make room for them. The students found people friendly, open to ministry, and willing to share their stories. Children welcomed the attention of the teams, and loved the Bible sessions, crafts, sledding, and hockey.

They met “stretching experiences” with youthful enthusiasm. And there were surprises! Daily showers are a luxury most of us take for granted. Not every home in Manitoba has running water and flush toilets.

There are many comparisons that could be made between traveling in a Boeing 747 or Northern Canada Evangelical Mission’s bush plane, many favorable. But, do we really want to feel each air pocket, the gusts of wind, the churning in our stomachs, and luggage piled between, above and around us? Al Giesbrecht, the faithful NCEM pilot, faces each with a grin as he travels the North country in ministry. He flew the teams into Garden Hill and Oxford House.

And then there are the winter roads!

are, well, shall we say, bumpy. The idea of crossing a lake in a van creates a bit of anxiety for some. Later, a chance to go ice fishing provides an idea of the depth of ice as well as the richness of life beneath.

Welcome to northern delicacies!

Thompson Bible Chapel hosted supper for the students on Valentine’s Day. They took special care to provide a smorgasbord of bannock and wild meat: moose, caribou, elk, and goose. The cooks were affirmed by the interest and appreciation of the guests.

Later several local Christians shared their testimonies. They spoke of growing up on remote reserves, problems in alcoholic families, and the challenges

they now face in college and at work.

Not only are these northerners making the necessary cultural adjustment to mainstream society in Thompson, they are also sharing their faith in God under challenging circumstances.

For the SBC students, the various experiences in each community are interesting changes from the regular classes of lectures, taking notes, and writing tests. This is learning in a different setting. Here students kept a daily journal, and noted many times how God was answering prayer and giving them a love for people of another culture.

For some, the stretching experience helped to develop a deeper reliance on God for wisdom and energy to keep going. They also spoke of a greater appreciation for prayer partners.

We trust that they will consider cross-cultural ministry in their future service for the Lord. We pray that some will return to help us here in the backyard.

Brazil

Christian camping has an impact!

There is nothing which brings as much joy and anticipation as the birth of a child. The miracle of new life always draws attention and intrigue.

I wonder if the miracle birth of a new ministry brings the same intrigue or enthusiasm.

God has blessed Shannon and I with the opportunity to be involved in the birthing process of Quest, a new Christian Camp in Santa Catarina, Brazil. He has put together a team of passionate Brazilians and Canadians to work at fulfilling the vision he has laid out for us.

The impact of Christian camping is no secret—in Canada, that is. In Brazil, it is a different story. The whole concept is new, but it has grabbed hold of the hearts of many believers.

The vision God has given is to develop servant leaders of all ages, using biblical and ethical principles in an experiential adventure camp

work in their lives and their children’s lives is unmatchable, but their lack of finances and resources stop any such opportunities from becoming reality.

As Quest goes through the birthing process with all its pains and excitement, I would like to challenge you to pray for us. Most of you don’t know who we are or have no connection with Brazil, but that’s okay. The reason I ask for your prayers is because the same God who is present in the ministry you’re involved in is the same God birthing Quest. He is the connecting link between you and us at Quest.

Pray that those God speaks to would release his funds for his vision. We believe that as people are obedient to his voice, they and Quest will share in his blessing.

Sudan

Water, a growing ministry

It’s like an illusion as you see the gray colored water from a contaminated stream being poured into the tip of a meter-high concrete box. Moments later that same foul-looking water comes flowing out of a spout protruding from the box as clean, clear water. You take a glass of it to your mouth and the liquid trickling onto your tongue tastes as good and healthy as any water you’ve ever experienced.

The nagging question is how? How can this contaminated dirty water almost instantly become clean and drinkable, simply by channeling it through a concrete box?

It is because the box is a well-built, durable, outer shell of a Bio-Sand Filter, bringing clean water to hundreds of thousands in Asia, Latin America and Africa. A team of six of us went to Southern Sudan and as part of the team’s initiative we trained 15 people to build Bio-Sand Filters, two lab technicians, and two welders.

More than a billion people—one of every six of us on the planet—do not have access to safe drinking water. They must rely on water from stagnant ditches, ponds, streams, and other usually contaminated sources. And so they fight a near constant battle against diarrhoeal diseases, like dysentery, cholera, and worms that kill about 1.8 million people annually.

Children are often the most vulnerable as ninety per cent of the deaths caused by unclean water are helpless youngsters age five or under. Water related diseases are killing 4,500 children every single day, says the World Health Organization.

Envirol Stewards, a partner of International Teams, has committed itself to building enough Bio-Sand Filters to serve the whole district of Kaji Keji in southern Sudan, teaching nationals how to build and maintain the filters so that it can even be an income generating program for our partners in Africa.

Jesus referred to himself as The Water of Life, maybe because water plays such an important part in our lives and pure clean water so much the more. The Revival Movement in Southern Sudan, an interdenominational ministry trying to serve the church and the country, is our partner. What a great place to start by providing clean water!

Each easy-to-build BSF unit features layers of sand and gravel, topped off with a thin layer of naturally occurring biological material. Together, they filter out harmful parasites, bacteria, and viruses, while also eliminating unpleasant tastes and odors. The average filter costs about 50,000 Ugandan shillings, which is only $30 U.S. As we continue to serve our brothers and sisters in the area of building projects it’s important to note that the BSF program acts as a catalyst to open doors for other health and development projects in the communities. We serve also in sharing the Gospel message through the relationships developed.

This recent team in February 2007 of six people also served in the construction of a nursery school which will serve 300 children, a ministry to orphans, and helped develop a leadership training school. These are exciting times as we see the new Sudan being built from the bottom up.

Leadership changes and blessings La Crete, Alta.: The other night on the news, a reporter showed a vinyl record to a group of elementary school children and asked them if they knew what this was, to which they shook their heads.

Technology has changed so much in the past decade that it is mind boggling if you dare stop to really think about it.

On January 14 we had the privilege of seeing technology at work during the morning worship service. We were linked live on camera using Skype (a computer telephone) for an interview with one of our missionaries, Jamie Fehr, who is

serving with Avant in Malaga, Spain.

It was definitely the first time we had a Mission report “live on location.” A big thanks to those who took the time before hand to set up and make it happen. If anyone is interested, you can view part of the session at www.jamiefehr.com.

It’s encouraging to see God use such wide and varying avenues to bring His message to the world.

Since we said good-bye to Pastor Frank and Cora Winsor in October, much has happened. Parting is never easy, and this is true in the church as well. It again meant a time of transition and change,

Martha and Peter Doerksen will be starting their senior pastoral ministry at LCCF in July.

and while we look forward to some changes—like live interviews during the morning service—we dreaded the thought of being pastor-less.

Trusting the Lord to send His choice for us was another step of faith. The promise of Matthew 16:18 takes on new meaning where Christ says “I will build my church.” We recognize that it is His church and we are part of His body.

We are pleased to have the Lord send us former Pastor Milton and Gladys Fast here in the interim, and to have Peter and Martha Doerksen accept the position as full-time senior pastoral couple.

Doerksens are expected to arrive here sometime in July, following their term in Mexico.

We recognize that it is good to praise the Lord and we truly do praise him for his unfailing goodness. We anticipate more great things from the Lord here at La Crete Christian Fellowship.

RFC seeking new ministries Rosenort Fellowship (Man.): RFC held a communion service on November 19, 2006, with Pastor John Driedger sharing a message. The service closed with the familiar song Blest Be the Tie That Binds.

The following week we had a Memorial Candle Lighting Service. Everyone is given the opportunity to light a candle in memory of deceased loved ones. Harry Koop led the male choir in song that Sunday as well.

Many of our outreach groups spent time at Siloam Mission in the past couple of months. Siloam is a safe warm place for the homeless and hungry in downtown Winnipeg. These kinds of outreach play an important role in sharing the love of Jesus with others. If you ever get the chance to go, go!

We held our annual winter picnic at Rosenort Arena on January 28, 2007.

Ben Dueck was our guest speaker for the morning. Ben is the youth pastor at the Elim Mennonite Church in Niverville, Man., and Art and Martha Dueck’s sonin-law. He challenged us to realize how blessed we are and how much potential we have to make a difference in countries that are in need.

games on the ice and an NHL all-star game took place shortly after. It was a great time of fellowship and worshipping our God. Please pray for RFC as we are in a bit of a transition period. We are looking to focus on outreach and possibly different kinds of ministries we would like to be involved in. The DVBS program needs to be relocated as the new Oak Bluff Bible Church is taking care of the Oak Bluff area.

We want God to be our guide in all of the decisions we make. It is so easy for us, especially myself, to get caught up in our own ideas for ministry. We have to trust and rely on God to give us answers. He knows the needs, the future and prepares the way for us. Our job is simple: Listen, and obey. There are always opportunities to share God’s love with those around us. God bless you!

For our Sunday services we are currently renting the gym at St. Mary’s University College, which is working well for us. We are seeking to grow our small congregation and this has started to happen.

Pray for us as we reach out to the communities around us, so that we will be joyful and vibrant witnesses to the love and saving power of our Lord Jesus Christ whom we serve.

Some growth has taken place with the birth of several babies. In November 2006 we had a child dedication service in which six children were dedicated to the Lord. Local advertising has generated interest, and some local folks are visiting our services. Several persons have requested baptism so we are planning a baptismal service in March.

Plett and Dresen families recognized at Treesbank Treesbank, Man.: Our Sunday school children have spent some afternoons singing at the Personal Care Home for residents. The elderly really enjoy having the younger generation around; it seems to put some spark into their lives. We hope to do more of this type of ministry.

On December 3, 2006, we were honoured to have the Glen Cross Quartet bring the special music during our annual adult Christmas banquet. The youth did an excellent job of serving the many guests who attended.

Sunday School children presented a wonderful Christmas program on December 22. The two- to four-yearolds welcomed the congregation, while the primary class explained the meaning of C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S. The junior class presented a skit entitled What is Christmas? The junior class presented a skit which helped us understand why Santa Claus is part of Christmas. Two of

Apple cider was on Christmas morning. This has been a tradition for many years.

The morning of February 4, 2007, was dedicated to appreciating our long-time deacon couple, Leonard and Luella Plett.

They have served the church for many years. The congregation made a point of dressing formally to honour them. A soup and bun lunch was served, and we could individually thank Leonard and Luella for their work.

On February 25, we presented a framed picture to Tom, Allison and Alec Dresen. It was our way of saying thanks for being a part of our church and that we will miss you. They have moved to Alberta due to a job transfer.

Dedication, Advent, New Year’s Roseisle, Man.: Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6).

On October 15, 2006, our church was bit fuller than usual as friends and relatives came out for our parent-child dedication ceremony.

Cam and Pam Dyck participated in the ceremony, declaring that they were dedicated to raising and teaching Kaiden to love and follow God. Jackie and Danielle Friesen performed a song special to Cam and Pam. On December 10, 2006, we had our annual Advent Festival. Many came out to enjoy the pizza supper, which was followed by a sharing time. Each family was encouraged to share a favourite Christmas memory, poem, song or story… and to light a candle. Many enjoyed our local skating rink afterward.

On December 23 we had our Sunday School Christmas program. The younger classes each prepared a small number, while the older classes teamed up to perform a short play. The adult choir performed the music that accompanied the play.

We had our annual New Year’s Eve party on December 31. People came out to enjoy some group games as well as table games. Food as usual was plentiful.

Pastor Kelly Lesser led us in prayer as we entered 2007.

A big part of that work is accomplished through the prayers of the saints. That is why we are organizing a Prayer Team to come to Abundant Springs and spend time prayerfully dealing with requests and other issues that come up throughout the weekend. We need you to be dedicated and diligent as you pray for God to do His work.

CMU introduces new Master of Arts in theological studies

Northern Youth Revived 2007

People who want to do graduate work in theology in a Mennonite and evangelical setting will have a new option this fall when Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) launches its new Master of Arts in Theological Studies degree.

“There are many Christians who did not choose to do biblical or theological studies when they went to university, but who now feel a need to become more grounded in their faith,” says Gordon Matties, head of CMU’s Biblical and Theological Studies program. “This program will give them the tools they need to think Christianly about life and the world around them, and to bring their university studies into conversation with their faith.”

The new program, which will begin with courses in the New and Old Testaments, ethics, theology and a history of confessions and creeds, is aimed at those “who want to do some solid biblical study, who want to explore more deeply why they think and live the way they do,” he says, adding that it is also a “stepping stone for current undergraduate students who want to go on to doctoral studies in theology or biblical studies.”

It’s also ideal for those who are doing some mid-career re-focusing, he says.

“Some people might be considering pastoral ministry, or some other kind of work in the church or a church-related

organization. This will give them the tools and degree they need to find a new career in ministry.”

The program will be of particular interest to Manitobans who want to study in an Anabaptist-Mennonite environment, since the only two Mennonite seminaries in North America are located in the U.S. A unique aspect of the program is that students will be able to take courses at other local schools through the Winnipeg Theological Cooperative, of which CMU is a member. These include University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Theology, Salvation Army’s Booth College, Winnipeg Centre for Ministry Studies at CMU (affiliated with Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary in Fresno, CA, and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana) and Anglican Church of Canada’s St. John’s College. Students can also take courses at Providence Seminary towards their degree.

In addition to usual theological courses, Matties says the program will also focus on “the interface between Christianity and culture-things like the arts, film, politics, international development, and economics.”

Rob Reimer appointed SBC president The board cabinet of Steinbach Bible College is pleased to announce the appointment of Rob Reimer as President, effective June 1, 2007.

Rob will be coming to Rob Reimer us from Calgary where he is the pastor of Highland MB Church.

Before this he held pastoral positions in Winnipeg, California, and Kansas and was Executive Director of Winkler Bible Camp for a number of years.

Rob’s educational background includes graduating from Winkler Bible Institute, a B.A. from University of Winnipeg, and an M.Div. from Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary. He has candidate status for a D.Min. from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Rob, his wife Myrna and three children, Kara, Shanna and Joel are looking forward to moving to Steinbach and becoming part of the community.

The Resurrection has borne Life, and because of this miracle, we needn’t weep at the foot of the Cross; all the sin of man was borne there.

Or at the sepulcher, for it is empty, and all Joy is ours because of this One Hope—Jesus Christ, Who came to live in our hearts and lives.

And forever, The Cross on that hill where Jesus died is not where we stay, for the Good News of the Gospel must be told to all nations.

What is Your Treasure?

D

o you have treasure? A treasure is anything you think is of great value or a prize. It could be a specially shaped piece of driftwood, a perfect seashell, or an arrowhead. It could be a gift, a book you really like, or a favorite toy. These are treasures because you value them.

Another kind of treasure is something you must look for. You need clues or a map to direct you to the spot where it’s hidden. A scavenger hunt or an Easter Egg Hunt is an example.

Treasure makes us think of pirates. Pirates look for treasure at a shipwreck or buried on an island. They may find coins, jewelry or antiques.

Diamonds and gold are treasure naturally hidden in rocks. To get them they must be mined or dug out.

Diamonds are valued as precious stones, and a very small chunk of gold is equal to hundreds of dollars.

One treasure has never been found. It has been hidden for thousands of years but people continue to search for it. Can you guess what it is? It is the Ark of the Covenant.

During their forty year journey to the Promised Land the children of Israel needed God. They needed Him to show them the way, to help them and protect them. Without God the Israelites made many wrong choices and got into a lot of trouble. God designed the Ark of the Covenant to help them.

The Ark was a wooden chest covered in gold. In it lay the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments.

Surrounding it was a glowing cloud. God was present in the cloud; in this way God showed the people He was with them. The cloud moved ahead of them to guide and protect them on their journey.

Along with the Ark God made a promise. He would 10 protect the Israelites as long as they worshipped only Him, the one true God. This was the covenant.

The Ark was carried by priests. When the Israelites came to the Jordan River the priests stepped in first carrying the Ark and the waters parted (Joshua 3:10–17). When the walls of Jericho fell the Ark carried by the priests marched with them (Joshua 6:11, 20). In battle against the enemy the Ark was right there. This meant God was present helping them.

Today the Ark is hidden. The people who search for it may want success like it brought Israel. Or are they

searching for God? Do we need to find the Ark to have success? Do we need it to find God? Jesus answers in John 14:6, 9: “I am the way and I am the truth and the life.” And He says, “You have seen me and so you have seen the Father.”

We don’t need the Ark today; instead we have Jesus and He has a new promise for us. Read the promise in T John 14:12–14. M
