nyone who has seen Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ can agree that crucifixion is a brutal way to die.

In fact, some people objected to the movie because of the level of violence portrayed. On the other side were people that said it didn’t do enough to demonstrate the emotional, soul-wrenching agony Christ felt in bearing the weight of the sins of the world.

In Christ, we too are crucified and experience the painful, gruesome, unnatural act of dying to self and, in him, also rise to new life in Christ.

The fact that there is debate shows that the death of Christ matters. Paul, the writer of large portions of the New Testament, shows concern that the cross not be emptied of its power (1 Corinthians 1:17–18).

He resolves to preach and know nothing but Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2).

During Passion Week we remember the sacrificial death of Christ and his unnerving resurrection. We debate the need to emphasize the blood-stained cross as well as the empty tomb. We grieve and celebrate, but what lasting impact does this have on how we live?

In Christ, a symbol of shame and offense becomes the means of salvation— the cross is the ultimate demonstration of God’s power and victory over sin and death. In Christ, we too are crucified and experience the painful, gruesome, unnatural act of dying to self and, in him, also rise to new life in Christ (Galatians 2:20, 5:24).

Let us demonstrate to the world that, in Christ, our worst fears are realized. Yes, we have died (the very thought makes me shudder); we have voluntarily renounced our right to live to please only ourselves.

However, because we did so, we are more alive than ever. Nothing now can hold us back as we carry our cross and follow T Christ! M Becky Buhler

Without the luxury of time

A

ccording to UNAIDS estimates, there are 38 million adults and 2.3 million children living with HIV, and during 2005 some 4.9 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.

“Around 95 percent of people with HIV/AIDS live in developing nations. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world” (World AIDS Day).

Africa, with about 56 countries, is the continent hardest hit. According to the Global Issues website, the year 2000 began with 24 million Africans infected with the virus. Without a medical miracle nearly all will die before 2010. Each day, 6,000 Africans die from AIDS and an additional 11,000 are infected.

As well, the site says that in sub-

Saharan Africa, there were 25.8 million (out of 40 million worldwide) living with HIV, 3.2 million (out of 4.9 million) new HIV infections, and 2.4 million (out of 3.1 million) AIDS deaths.

Each day, 6,000 Africans die from AIDS and an additional 11,000 are infected.

For Christians in Canada and the U.S., such statistics seem unreal, even staggering. We might need to catch our breath. We have time; the problem isn’t going away soon. Unfortunately, many other people don’t have that same luxury of time.

Many of us are easily isolated from the reality. How does our Christian faith give us the ability to see and to respond with compassion that follows Christ’s T example? M Terry M. Smith THE MESSENGER

Which is the central descriptor?

I would like to congratulate you on exploring in your paper the implications of being both Evangelical and Mennonite as a conference. I am referring specifically to the articles

by Al Hiebert [Who is an Evangelical?] and Abe Warkentin [Pacifism: The Road Less Traveled] in the March 22 issue of The Messenger.

I note that the two writers feel somewhat differently about this symbiotic relationship. Hiebert sees no problems at all while Warkentin wonders whether in such a relationship the Mennonite part of the identity tends to get left behind.

From my perspective, Warkentin has a better grasp on the issue than Hiebert. One doesn’t have to look far for the evidence—only to the former EMB and the American EMC—and indeed, as Warkentin says, to our own local churches.

One might ask the question, both in my conference the EMMC and in the EMC, which of the words in our names are the modifiers and which the central descriptors.

To say we are Evangelical Mennonite makes Evangelical the modifier—that is to say we are Mennonites with an appreciation for evangelicalism.

But as Warkentin points out, with time we tend to become Mennonite Evangelicals—that is Evangelicals with an appreciation for a few Mennonite ideas. And, of course, the next step is to boot those few annoying Mennonite ideas right out the window—with the assumption that they are of little value for contemporary Christian living.

From my point of view, the future of the Evangelical-Mennonite synthesis is not served well by proclaiming how popular evangelicalism still is in our country. Nor is it by warning our members to be wary of scholars who recognize the damage that modernism has done to our faith.

We should not be asked to swallow contemporary expressions of evangelicalism hook, line and sinker—nor those of Mennonitism for that matter.

In any case I am afraid that in the majority of our congregations any

Mennonite or Anabaptist identity is already mostly out the window.

And that is too bad, because I think Anabaptist notions are extremely relevant in our postmodern world.

Without a serious attempt to retell the Anabaptist story and to reflect on Anabaptist/Mennonite theology on the ground where most of our members live, I suspect that within a decade both of our conferences will have dropped the name Mennonite.

If that hasn’t actually happened, the significance of the name Mennonite will be as hollow as the proverbial “hollowed out bun without a crust.”

aybe God at times seems distant and indifferent. But Christians, if you will pardon me, believe in a dirty Jesus. God became a man among us and in Jesus we see the human face of God (John 1:14, Matthew 1:23).

This dirty Jesus gives me hope.

Jesus shared our dirty lives John Stott, an Anglican minister, quotes from a novel in which a poor man from a slum outside Rio de Janiero, Brazil, climbs a mountain to a massive statue of Christ 2,310 feet above Rio. The man says, “There are 900,000 of us down there in the slums of that…city. And you, Christ…do you remain here…surrounded by divine glory? Go down there into the favelas [slums]. Come with me into the favelas and live with us down there. Don’t stay away from us; live among us and give us new faith in you and in the Father.”

Stott asks, “What would Jesus say in response? Would he not say, ‘I did come down to live among you?’”

(The Cross of Christ, p. 333). Alfred Plummer once said that Jesus was born in a cattle cave, had no place to lay his head, and died in a borrowed tomb. Jesus had such a human life that his critics called him a drunk and a glutton. He was hungry and could get angry (without sin).

Larry Tomzak, a Catholic, pictures people facing God in judgment. How does God have the right to judge us? they think. He doesn’t know what it’s like to be poor, to have the wrong skin colour, or to live with violence. But who steps off the throne? Jesus— born of poor parents, a Jew in his humanity, crucified in the prime of life. The people fall silent. Jesus knows what it’s like to be us.

Helmut Thielicke, a pastor in Germany during the Second World War, said that God does not shout encouragement from afar; he came April 19, 006

down into the trenches where we worry and die. Jesus is God with us, made in human likeness from dust like us (Philippians 2:7; Genesis 2:7; Romans 8:3). Jesus shares the common dirt of being human.

Jesus became dirty with our sin People cried, “Crucify him!” Pilate symbolically washed his hands and God was crucified in his humanity. Why? Jesus came to give his life as “a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). That’s why he was baptized in the Jordan with no sins to repent of (Matthew 3:14-15). The innocent died in place of the guilty (2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:13). The Judge died for criminals, the Creator for his creation, the King for his subjects.

For the highest offence the highest price must be paid—and Jesus paid it in full on the Cross (John 19:30). “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Hebrews 9:22). In the Cross, the Son of God’s hands became dirty with our sins. “The Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53:6) and, by absorbing our sin and its penalty, healing comes to us (Colossians 1:26).

The darkness at noon was dirty on that Good Friday (Mark 15:33–34). Jesus endured, for a time, the turning away of the Father’s favour, his presence. He endured hell on the cross for us, so that we might be spared it (Matthew 27:46). In the Cross, Christ has done all that is necessary for us to escape hell if we care to.

A priest saw through his game and instructed him to stand before a crucifix and say three times, “You did that for me and I don’t give a damn.” He said it once, but he couldn’t say it three times.

He returned to England and there served Christ.

Jesus knows the dirt of death When Jesus died, Joseph of Arimathea got permission, took down our Lord’s body, made hasty preparations, and laid our Lord’s body in his own tomb (Matthew 27:57–59). Does a rich man’s grave make death look any better?

Whatever the grave site, death is dirty. Paul calls it “the last enemy” (1 Corinthians 15:26).

Death is dirty, ugly, unnatural.

Helmut Thielicke tells of a scene of a beautiful lilac bush but near it was the decomposing body of a young man killed in war. Thielicke reminds us that the beauty of flowers and the ugliness of death don’t go together.

But to be human now means to experience death and Jesus shared in our humanity. “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last” (Mark 15:37). He “died” (1 Corinthians 15:4).

Why should the eternal, immortal God descend to accept the humiliation of human death?

The only reason is that he cares deeply about what happens to us.

Jesus wept near the tomb of Lazarus (John 11:35); He raised Lazarus. He interrupted the funeral procession for the widow of Nain’s son; Jesus brought him to life. People said, “God has come to help his people” (Luke 7:11–17).

Does God care only about Lazarus or the widow’s son?

No, he tasted death for us all (Hebrews 2:14–15). And when Jesus rose from the dead on Easter morning, he broke death’s power for everyone. He is “the resurrection and the life” and whoever believes in him will never die (John 11:25–26).

It was Peter the Apostle who looked into the Empty Tomb and was puzzled until he later he met the Risen Lord (Luke 24:12; 1 Corinthians 15:5). He wrote we have a “living hope through the resurrection of Christ” (1 Peter 1:3). “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). “To live is Christ and to die is gain,” Paul said from a prison cell (Philippians 1:21).

Death is dirty, but Jesus became dirty to conquer it.

Because he lives, we shall too if we trust him.

Jesus is dirty among us still Jesus is present among us now in his Spirit, poured out on Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4), indwelling each Christian, and working in the world. A soldier once found a crucifix with the hands of Jesus blown away. He scratched at the bottom, “Now I have no hands but yours.” Jesus through his Spirit is multiplied in the hands and feet of his Church.

Remember how John Stott pictures Jesus responding to the man from the slums of Rio? One part was left out until now: Jesus said, “I did come among you, and I live among you still.”

Our Lord said, “Whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40).

Jesus continues to become dirty when we do. While Martin Luther King, Jr., marched for civil rights, Jesus was there. When Archbishop Oscar Romero spoke out against military crimes in El Salvador (shot dead through the heart while saying Mass), Jesus was there. As Billy Graham preaches “you must be born again,” Jesus is there inviting people to believe. We must get our hands dirty for Jesus because Jesus did for us.

This Easter, if God seems far away and uncaring, look again at how Jesus accepted our humanity, sins, death, and struggles. This dirty Jesus is our Lord and Saviour. He gives hope to T me. First Mennonite celebrates 37 years

First Mennonite Church, Colonia Francisco Morazan, Managua, Nicaragua, celebrated its 37th anniversary on March 26.

The banner for the occasion pictured green fields, open seas and the glory of the sun framed within the numbers 37.

This represented the ongoing task of gathering in and fishing for souls to the glory of God’s Kingdom.

The theme of this joyous event was 1 Chronicles 16:29: “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name. Bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.” As a church of 37 years, they were challenged to walk as mature and firm believers.

A brief summary of the church’s history was read. We were reminded of its humble beginnings. Fred and Doris Friesen, the first EMC workers in Nicaragua, began meeting in Juan and Argentina Reyes’ home in the Colonia in 1969.

Darlene and Lester Olfert (Steinbach EFC) are on a short-term EMC assignment in Nicaragua.

Shortly after they moved to the present location and began services under a palm leaf shelter. They now meet in a beautiful and comfortable sanctuary. A second story is being added to the existing education wing to provide the extra room they so much need. “Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name: make known among the nations what he has done” (1 Chronicles 16:8).

Honourable mention was made of several of their faithful members and fellow workers, Filadelfo Cuadra and Francisca Mendoza, who have gone on to be with the Lord.

A celebration of baptism followed as five young people responded in obedience to God’s call.

The church has a membership of 125. Special ministries are in place to meet various needs of their congregation and community.

“In spite of the many difficulties, pain, tears and challenges,” said Pastor Ramiro Moreno, “God’s faithfulness endures forever.”

Children’s park started The site of the Gethsemane Orphanage, Diriamba, Nicaragua, was turned into a sea of ecstatic children on March 25.

The happy occasion was the inauguration of the children’s park. When the children were invited to try out the new play structures there were squeals of happiness, excitement and laughter.

They made a wild dash to be the first to try the equipment and, if all went their way, to never release the swings again.

The prayer of dedication for the facility was offered by Nicolas Sequeira. When balloons began popping in the wind, the look of wonder and joy on the faces of the children was priceless. The community looked on in awe and gratefulness. (continued next page)

The afternoon was complete when Tigger, the piñata, was too ragged to be recognized any longer.

It is beautiful to be able to present to a community in poverty such a lovely facility. On the other hand, it will also be a challenge to supervise and manage carefully.

The orphanage board thanked the many volunteers who worked at the site to make this project possible. A special thank you was given to Harvey Plett for his valuable contribution and for loving the children unconditionally.

Pray for the orphanage committee and the Fraternity of Mennonite Churches here as they continue to extend and implement the plans for an operational orphanage.

March 5 was a busy day Straffordville, Ont.: So far the year 2006 has been a busy one for Straffordville EMC. In early January the congregation started new roles in the church, such as usher and library committee. Everyone is working hard toward the unified body of our church.

In February we were all excited when Pastor Mike Plett from Prairie Rose EMC in Landmark, Man., agreed to spend a week with us. He spent five evenings and one Sunday morning, explaining how to obtain a deeper life through Christ.

The six topics included Deeper Through a Clear Focus, Deeper Through Priorities, Deeper Through Surrender, Deeper Through Suffering, Deeper Through the Passion, and Deeper Through Inspiration. Throughout all the services the congregation had the chance to serve with testimonies and special numbers. It was an encouraging and uplifting time for anyone that came.

On Sunday, March 5, 2006, we had an especially busy day. There was a baptism service for Tina Wiebe. We welcomed

New members received on March 5: Jake and Mary Krahn, Dave and Linda Wall, Tina Wiebe, Neil and Eva Blatz, Ernie and Anna Fehr. They are flanked by Pastor Richard Klassen and minister Abe Berg.

As you can tell, our church is growing and thriving. With everyone’s prayer and support we will continue to grow as 2006 rolls on.

Many ‘positive issues’ discussed at Treesbank Treesbank, Man.: We started the New Year with another ALPHA course. This year’s course was quite small, but has had a tremendous impact on those who have attended.

Our church ladies began their new year with a brunch on January 28. This was also a planning meeting to divide up the year’s events and converse about current issues in the church. Ladies planned a baby shower for Austin Alden (son of Chris and Tracy Alden) for February 12. We enjoyed an afternoon of visiting, refreshments and adoring a newborn baby.

The church met for their annual meeting February 6. Many positive issues as well as concerns from the past year were discussed. The church has been encouraged by the attendance of

some new families and individuals. As a church we are also in the process of electing a new deacon couple. This is a continuing prayer item.

On March 5, Neil, Anita and Daryl Friesen gave a report on the work they had done in Pass Christian, Mississippi with Mennonite Disaster Service. They shared of the many families who had lost everything, but were still praising God in spite of the many challenges ahead of them.

Highlights for this spring will include our Easter Brunch on Easter Sunday and our annual spring music night. The theme for this year’s music evening is Music through the Decades.

November 12 is IDOP Sunday This year’s theme is “Blessed are the Persecuted” The theme for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church is Blessed are the Persecuted. This is taken from the Beatitudes in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, recorded in Matthew. While many of us here in Canada associate blessing with comfort and ease, these words give us reason to pause. Jesus says that we are blessed when we are

of prayer for the persecuted church, so congregations are encouraged to set aside time that week to remember their persecuted brothers and sisters.

IDOP Canada is asking Canadian churches to pray especially for the four focus areas of Belarus, India, Uzbekistan, Israel/West Bank and Gaza. The IDOP Canada partners are putting together

partners work together to produce resources for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church for churches in Canada. The IDOP Canada partners include the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, Religious Liberty Commission, Open Doors with Brother Andrew (Canada), Voice of the Martyrs (Canada), The Bible League, Christian

The International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church (IDOP) is an annual event in churches around the world. IDOP Canada is a partnership formed in 1997 to encourage churches to observe the day of prayer. IDOP Canada

Aid Mission and International Christian Response.

Every day in more than 60 countries more than 200 million men, women and children face discrimination, persecution and even death for loving Jesus Christ.

What, above all else, do they ask of us?

They ask, “Please pray for us!” Each year in November, Canadian churches join with others around the world to pray for those who are persecuted for their faith.

MWC Peace Council urges churches to be ‘a culture of peace’ Do visitors to our Anabaptist churches realize they are entering a culture of peace? Is peace bad news? Is there a dichotomy between evangelism and peace? Can peace churches grow?

Delegates to the Mennonite World Conference General Council, which met here March 7–16, confronted questions such as these in several sessions devoted to Peace Council agenda.

A new book, A Culture of Peace: God’s Vision for the Church, by Alan Kreider, Eleanor Kreider and Paulus Widjaja, formed the basis for worship and much of the discussion during Peace Council sessions. The book is MWC’s Anabaptist/ Mennonite Shelf of Literature selection for 2006.

The authors trace the notion of the church as a culture of peace from Justin, a second century Christian martyr, and even earlier to the founding of the church as recorded in Acts. They write: “Pentecost brought together Jews from many parts of the ancient world (Acts 2:9–11)” and “transformed the linguistic chaos of Babel (Genesis 11:1–9) into peace and harmony.”

They draw on the amazing story of Peter, a Galilean Jew, and his dinner in the house of Cornelius, a Roman officer, in the pagan city of Caesarea, the headquarters of Roman power in Palestine, a dangerous city full of soldiers, violence and non-kosher food.

There Peter began to understand that God shows no partiality. This event was a breakthrough in the history of the church. It showed that God’s reconciling love is not an addition to Christian faith but is its very heart. Peace is a natural part of what it means to be Christian, as natural as a next breath.

In separate presentations, which were discussed in inter-continental caucus groups, the authors spoke about peace in worship, in the workplace and in wartime. Alan Kreider urged thinking about war in times of peace. Under the

pressure of war, he said, it is hard to discern God’s will and Christians tend to think like everybody else. We need to shape our reflexes, he said, referring to the story of early Anabaptist Dirk Willems, who on impulse saved his pursuer who broke through thin ice.

Willems was immediately captured by that same officer and later executed.

Among questions raised and discussed in groups was Widjaja’s observation that the economically disadvantaged melt mission and peace together while the more advantaged among us see a dichotomy. How do we address this challenge?

Stories from various countries demonstrated the importance of community in the church’s becoming a culture of peace. What steps is God urging us as individuals and congregations to take to embrace fully God’s vision for us?

Other questions focused on domestic violence, the abuse of power, the role women are allowed to take in the church,

how we can protect “the least among us,” and what impact our response to these issues has on the church as a culture of peace.

In its concluding session the Peace Council affirmed three commitments: To have our churches be “sanctuaries of peace”; to choose non-violence as non-negotiable; and to stand against all taking of human life.

In other business, delegates heard reports on a 2004 conference of Historic Peace Churches in Africa; about plans for a Historic Peace Church conference in Asia; and that Paulus Widjaja has been appointed to represent MWC on Mennonite Central Committee’s Peace Committee.

Delegates also approved designating the Sunday closest to September 21, International Peace Day, as Peace Sunday.

Congregations who already observe a Peace Sunday on a different date will be encouraged to stay with their current practice.

The six Vietnamese Mennonites who were imprisoned for various lengths of time over the past two years pose for a photo March 8 in Ho Chi Minh City. The photo—shown to the Mennonite World Conference general council meeting March 11 in California—was described as an expression of thanks for prayers and support of Mennonites and Brethren in Christ around the world.

The six are church worker Le Thi Hong Lien, evangelist Nguyen Thanh Nhan, evangelist Nguyen Van Phuong, pastor Nguyen Hong Quang, evangelist Pham Ngoc Thach and church worker Nguyen Hieu Nghia. Thach was last to be released, after two years in prison, on March 2.

Taking after their father, Alex Morozov, who produces radio programs for Family Life Network, the two young men have a vision to launch a media program Follow Me A study booklet on examining our wider task as Christians, with a striving for social justice.

Alms Fund Q & A

ecently several churches have asked, “Do other churches have an alms fund and if so, can we have a copy of their guiding policies?”

Though several of the churches I asked have established protocol, none offered to share written guidelines on how such funds are administered by their church. Given the lack of written material, I offer the following as conversation starters for your church.

What is a church alms fund?

It is a fund, approved by the congregation which is available to help people who have an immediate financial need.

Should our church have an alms fund?

Yes. It is part of the mission of the church to respond to needs of people in and around the church and that includes financial distress (Matt 25:31ff).

How do people who have needs receive help?

Usually the church has appointed one or several people (deacon, board chair, pastor) to process the requests and oversee the disbursements.

How do you “qualify” people to receive church help?

That is a tough question. Ask too little and you may not be addressing the real issues. Ask too much and people feel stripped of their dignity. Don’t make it unnecessarily hard for people to get help even if occasionally someone takes advantage of the church.

There is always some risk in doing good.

We had a small fund years ago, but we took it out of the budget because the deacons wouldn’t tell the congregation who they gave the money to. Doesn’t Canada Revenue Agency expect more transparency on such accounts?

If the congregation has approved the alms fund in the annual budget and if the church has established some guiding principles for the distribution of those funds, that is all the accountability expected.

Some people are forever in financial distress. Doesn’t giving a gift of money only perpetuate the problem?

Sometimes the gift of money needs to be linked to ongoing financial mentorship. Ideally, every church would have an arrangement with a financial counselor, preferably not from their church (but with the church paying for some sessions), who could mentor these individuals over a period of months and get them headed in the right direction. For some, the gift of financial counseling may be a greater gift than the outright gift of money.

I have heard that if you give cash, people will use it to buy cigarettes, maybe even drugs. Wouldn’t it be better to give a grocery voucher?

It might be, depending on the need and other circumstances.

If I ask for help, will my case get discussed at a congregational meeting?

No, only the person or persons designated by the church to handle the fund will know of the transaction.

Some financial needs are so huge, that no church alms fund can address these needs adequately. Should we still give them something even if it doesn’t solve their problems?

Even a small gift can be a great encouragement. Gifts always carry a message beyond the practical use of the gift. Let yours say “we know and we care.”

What if you have handed out help and later find that the people had other resources they could have used to help them over the tough spot?

If your intentions were noble and due process followed, learn from the experience and move on. Remember Jesus chose twelve, but one was a thief. It happens.

If you have given someone a gift and then a day later see them at Tim Hortons enjoying coffee and donuts with friends, what should you do?

Go over and wish them and their family God’s best for the day.

Can people give to meet the needs of a specific individual (such as a niece who lost her job because of company downsizing) and still get a charitable receipt?

Generally the answer is no, since that is considered private benevolence. But charitable receipts should not be the determining factor in deciding to whom we give.

Need and the ability to help are.

How much should our church set aside annually for an alms fund?

That all depends on the location and ministry focus of your church. Inner city churches or churches ministering in financially depressed areas will usually need more, but all churches should keep their eyes and wallets T open for people in need. M

Shouldn’t we place limits on how much can be handed out at one time to one person or family?

Setting an upper limit (example, $200 to $300), beyond which the board would need to approve the disbursement, would be appropriate. That would also reassure the congregation that appropriate checks and balances are in place.

A reader’s viewpoint

Eroded evangelicalism, modern conflicts, and Christ’s teaching Dr. Jon Bonk

I

have long been concerned by what I see as the steady erosion of the distinctively biblical orientation to faith and life that has traditionally been a hallmark of those of us who trace our roots back to the Radical Reformation. Its pre-Christendom conviction is that everyday life should and can be lived in accordance with what Jesus taught as recorded in the Gospels.

Such teaching seemed radical because establishment Christianity had become deeply compromised ethically.

Thus, while enemies could be killed with impunity and heretics might be tortured or burned at the stake for faulty doctrine, “Christian” leaders could and often did lead lives of self-indulgence, corruption and brutality.

Then, as now, political and economic ends justified violent means. Christian theologians became adept at vindicating and aggressively promoting the self-interests of their particular socio-political entities, no matter how dubious the cause or tyrannical the leader.

The difficulty with much of North American evangelicalism is that it is chopped off, reduced to where it leaves the practical core of Jesus’ teaching to the status of being peripheral issues. To be evangelical, in the strictly biblical sense, means to be convinced that the Gospel is good news, in fact, essential news.

EMCers have a choice: A domesticated evangelical religion that defends us from Jesus, or a Gospelconsistent faith that follows our Lord.

As God’s revelation, the gospels are not merely revealed doctrine, but revealed ethics for everyday life and relationships. Jesus, God incarnate, was not just a voice box revealing correct teaching about God, but a human being who lived and who taught his followers to live in a radically new way.

We humans come by violence naturally, instinctively exacting tooth for tooth, eye for eye, and life for life.

Whether provoked by information or bamboozled by misinformation, we are easily sucked into violent action against our respective nations’ enemies.

And in every such exchange, warring sides have always claimed the high moral ground. As the title of a book by veteran war correspondent Chris Hedges observes, “War is a force that gives us meaning.”

And it is precisely because this has always been so that our Lord modeled and advocated a better way. This

counter-intuitive way acknowledges the sovereignty of Jesus Christ who, knowing everything terrible that can possibly be known about our enemies, nevertheless tells us that His will for us is to love them, to do good to them, and to bless them.

This hard work is worth attempting only if Jesus is Lord, and it is credible only to those who regard the Bible as not merely a textbook of revealed doctrine, but God’s revelation of how to live in the toughest situations.

In today’s conflicts, which side would Jesus take?

Whom would he bomb, interrogate, torture, and execute?

What lies would he tell in the interests of espionage?

What self-justifying rationalizations and half-truths would he improvise to cover up ill-conceived or botched plans? What kinds of weapons and missile guidance systems would he endorse?

Which military academy would he commend to his followers’ children? Since our Lord is with us always, even unto the end of the age, he is obliged to accompany his followers in just such situations. Just who is leading whom?

Søren Kierkegaard’s observation is sadly apt: “The matter is quite simple. The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers.

“We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand we are obliged to act accordingly. Take any words in the New Testament and forget everything except pledging yourself to act accordingly. My God, you will say, if I do that my whole life will be ruined. How would I ever get on in the world?”

We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:38-39).

PETER PENNER 1947–2006

Dad was born December 6, 1947, in Steinbach to parents Annie and Ben C.L. Penner of Blumenort. He grew up on a dairy farm and he loved horses as well. He was the first one in his family to get his high school diploma and the first one to stay off the family farm and work elsewhere. But he would still help out on the weekends and do chores or bale hay.

Dad was married to Lorna Janzen on June 14, 1969. Soon thereafter he started

working at A. K. Penner and Sons in their Farm Services division and has been there ever since. His face behind the counter was one all farmers knew and respected. He was a fixture on the road, seen walking or cycling down the 311 to and from work twice a day for over 35 years, and would automatically put up his hand to wave when he would hear a honk from behind.

Dad was famous for his carpentry projects: Making beds for his kids, bunk beds for his brothers and sisters, and Christmas presents for his nieces and nephews. He loved to help others, especially giving his brothers a hand on the farms and helping his sons on their building projects. He never tired with the extra work or the many projects that he enjoyed. It usually made him feel better physically and mentally and he was insulted when people told him that he should be slowing down.

Dad enjoyed serving his church and community, giving countless hours of his time. He spent many evenings serving on church committees and was always the steady voice of reason, respected by all.

He cared very deeply about his faith with Jesus Christ, never pushing it on anyone

but living by example and offering his advice whenever asked.

He loved spending his holidays helping at Eagle Lake Bible Camp whenever he had the chance. Dad was a counselor during his younger years and a maintenance man later on. Dad went on several missions trips to Haiti and always sent the message to others, especially his kids, that helping those less fortunate was what Jesus would want us to do.

Dad was called home very suddenly on Saturday, February 18, 2006, to be with his Lord and Saviour. His legacy will be left with his wife Lorna, and their children and grandchildren; daughter Roxane; sons Rick and Kristy, Cade, Rylan and McKenna; Sheldon and Melanie, Jasmine, Lia, and Serena; and Stuart and Charis, Ella and Reese; his brothers and sisters, Bertha (David) Plett, Leo (Erma) Penner, Betty (Leo) Plett, Lottie (Menno) Reimer, Lillie Penner, Larry (Eleanor) Penner, and Emily (Donald) Fast; sisterin-law Pat (Wes) Plett; and brother-inlaw Earl Janzen; as well as many nieces and nephews. Hw as predeceased by his parents Ben C.L. and Annie Penner.

Neil and Rose Rempel, with two of their girls, Victoria and Micayla, are placing tables, chairs and serving settings. Pastor Glen Koop carves ham; his wife Betty organizes the platter with pineapple slices.

Wally Doerksen wanders off, saying he’s checking if a person is doing things right. He arranges chairs for the evening service. People trickle in and more food is organized.

Then Neil Rempel welcomes about 40 people to “food and fellowship April 2006” (monthly potlucks are held on the first Sunday evening). He leads in prayer.

Peters says he isn’t a regular (though Bruce says he’s regular at Sunday morning men’s prayer meetings).

Children enjoy the wide space while adults chat.

Evening service About 6:30 the congregation moves to a smaller room where services are held. The church has a five-member worship team and Wally Doerksen, who planned tonight’s service, gives a welcome.

With piano accompaniment, the congregation sings about the wonders of Jesus and the Cross. Wally leads in a responsive Scripture reading. Announcements are given. Jesse and Beazaiyu Penner (who form the senior youth group) are in Toronto with Ridgewood EMC’s youth. GNCC is joining Ridgewood EMC for the Good Friday service. An offering is taken; the piano offertory is by Rhonda Penner.

Wally reports on a recent visit to see friends serving with MCC at an alcohol and drug rehabilitation centre in Chihuahua State, Mexico. Thirty men are enrolled in a 12-step three-month program to overcome alcohol addiction. Pastor Glen Koop prays for the program and that men there would find freedom in Christ and from alcohol. He leads the church in a prayer of confession.

visiting a German school where children sing beautifully and most boys and the male teacher dress in “bibpants.” Later she traveled to Copper Canyon where Tarahumara girls wear flowing, brightly-coloured skirts and their families live in caves. Wally says he met two boys of Korean background.

Now, Ruth asks, which of the children did God love the most? One boy hopes it is a fellow his age. Children’s answers show they get the point: God loved them all the same. After singing Jesus Loves the Little Children, the youngsters go to children’s church.

Instead of a sermon, a discussion on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is led by three people connected with the EMC Social Concerns Committee (see sidebar).

A closing prayer is said, and the service is over. Some people linger to chat and to clean.

A vision Ridgewood EMC’s ministerial had an ambitious plan to begin 10 churches in 20 years. Men and women met separately for prayer, which led to thoughts about church planting.

Knowing Glen Koop’s interim pastorate was ending at Ridgewood, members approached him about leading a church plant.

On October 16, 2004, people began meeting with Koop for prayer and then for planning. Services began on December 5, 2004, at Ridgewood EMC. In March 2005 services shifted to Steinbach 55.

Wally Doerksen tells of a family with FASD who tried two EMC churches before finding help and understanding within a non-EMC congregation.

Irma Janzen, MCC Manitoba’s mental health and disabilities program coordinator, explains FASD is an umbrella term covering disorders stemming from a fetus’s being affected by a mother’s drinking during pregnancy.

She stresses that FASD isn’t a Native issue or a parenting issue. It involves brain damage where a person can’t act in certain ways. (Can’t, Not Won’t is a title for a DVD/VHS available from MCC and EMC national office.)

Janzen says some German Mennonite mothers are reluctant to say they drank during pregnancy. She’s concerned that more children will be affected by FASD as social drinking becomes more acceptable.

She says, though, not to blame mothers; there’s a need to look to fathers and wider society for attitudes about drinking.

As a panel member, I say that a biblical response to FASD is found in Galatians 6:2, where we’re told to carry one another’s “heavy load.” Our motivation is in 1 John 4:9–12. At Easter season we’re reminded of how Christ came that we might live and died as our atoning sacrifice. The love that Christians show to each other and non-Christians is, as F.F. Bruce put it, our faith’s final apologetic.

Some families are immersed in the situation, other people can become supportive rather than judgmental, and most of us can learn, I say. The panel fields questions.

commissioned on the morning of May 15, 2005, at Ridgewood EMC; its chartering service was held that evening at Steinbach 55; and it was formally accepted by conference council on December 3, 2005. Twenty to 35 people attend on a typical Sunday, Koop said. Good News is self supporting.

Why Steinbach?

Why another church in Steinbach? Glen Koop said 2001 statistics revealed its population had room; the community has since expanded. While “the…ratio of churches to people is already high,” Bruce Penner later wrote, “…new, small churches are one of the most effective ways of growing the Church….”

But Wally Doerksen says its motive is about more than a city’s capacity for churches; there’s a desire to 17

be different. The leaders emphasize “the church scattered,” where people are “empowered” to use their gifts, rather than run programs.

Penner writes, “In our Sunday service, we intentionally seek to celebrate the areas in which any individual church family member touched the world during their week.” Instead of making people feel guilty when they don’t attend on Sunday, they’re encouraged to be working for the kingdom, said Doerksen. The church wants to free people for Kingdom work “without spending too much time on structure or process,” Penner writes.

The evening Wally Doerksen service time provides an alternative that others get used to. It’s relaxed, without concern to be done by noon, Wally said.

Penner writes, “When we focus on the differentiators of the GNCC, we recognize that every church shares in these characteristics to some extent.” Whether GNCC provides what another church doesn’t depends on the individuals, the pastor said.

A council (Bruce Penner, Neil Rempel, Rhonda Penner, and the pastor as ex officio) meets monthly.

The membership meets four times a year. Women gather every two weeks for a home Bible study.

The church held a retreat in September 2005 at Long Bow Lake Bible Camp and was involved with the camp conducted there by Ridgewood EMC. GNCC recently agreed to sponsor a

missionary couple and more camp work is anticipated, Doerksen said.

The future?

Leaders envision erecting a community centre with GNCC as a tenant serving Deerfield suburb as a community church. Penner writes, “The idea of a facility which welcomes the community and is ‘owned’ by the community resonates really well with our mission to be ‘in the world.’”

A challenge is to find a pastor to replace him, Koop said. Doerksen doesn’t envision the “usual type of pastor” who often tends to relate just to Christians; as part of the scattered church, the pastor will maybe have a “job” to help rub shoulders with community people.

What should EMCers understand about Good News?

It’s part of the conference, though Koop appreciates the “blessing” of autonomy. The pastor wonders how the Church today can recapture the New Testament church’s focus on cities, with less emphasis on denominations and more on community and lifestyle.

t Easter we celebrate Jesus’ rising. He is no longer dead; he has left the dark tomb. He has a new and glorious body. He shows his hands to his disciples who see the scars that are now healed. Then they see Jesus disappear into heaven.

Before he goes he tells them they will rise too, just as he has. He tells them he is going to heaven to prepare a place for them.

This is why we celebrate Easter.

But it didn’t begin this way. It began with sadness and fear.

Do you remember Joseph whose brothers came to Egypt to buy food? Joseph met them and invited them to return to Egypt with their father to live with him.

Joseph’s family and their descendants lived in Egypt for a long time. After awhile life became difficult for them. They were treated as slaves and suffered hardship and death under the wicked Pharaoh. But God had a plan.

God had an escape plan for his people. Moses would help them escape and lead them out of Egypt. But first they had to prepare; there were certain steps they had to take.

First they had to pack to leave. Then they must kill a lamb to eat for their final meal. They must take the blood of the lamb and with it paint the top and the sides of their door frame. This would protect them.

God knew there was only one way the Pharaoh would let the people go. God would kill each firstborn of all families and animals. This was the worst punishment of all. The lamb’s blood on the doorposts was the only protection and it was for God’s people.

It worked. God’s people were safe and the Pharaoh let them go.

Pascha means Passover. The blood on the doorposts of God’s people saved them because the angel God sent to kill the firstborn passed over all homes where the lamb’s blood covered the doorway. This is what Passover means.

They were passed over or saved from death.

When Jesus died he became the Passover which means that his death saves us; we no longer have to kill a lamb to be saved. John says Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29).

Jesus also says, “I am the bread of life: he who comes to me will never be hungry; and he who believes in me will never be thirsty” (John 6:35).

One way some of us celebrate Jesus and life at Easter is by eating special meals of eggs, lamb and paska, the T special sweet Easter bread. M

Activity: Cheese Wafers You need: • 2 cups old cheddar cheese • ½ cup butter • 1 ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1 cup flour • 2 cups rice krispies • large mixing bowl • mixing spoon Do: • Beat cheese, butter, and Worcestershire sauce together.

• Stir in flour.

• Add cereal.

• Mix until well blended.

• Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheets, flatten with a fork.

• Bake at 350 F for 10 to 12 minutes or until golden on the bottom.

• Let cool on cookie sheet.

• Store in airtight container, in fridge, or freezer. **Make sure an adult supervises baking activity**
