OUR STORY The EMC Foundation was established in 2022 by Mr. Shyam Nokta to support environmental awareness and education in Guyana. The drive for this initiative was influenced by the evolution of environmental issues over the last three decades and their importance in today's national and global context.

EMC FOUNDATION 2022-2023 AT A GLANCE

35 In 2023, the EMC Foundation made significant strides in advancing environmental education and awareness in Guyana, placing a particular focus on engaging young minds. The Foundation saw a notable increase of 1,700 new followers across its Facebook and Instagram platforms, indicating a growing community keen on environmental issues. Engaging actively with over 35 schools from across Guyana, the Foundation played a crucial role in fostering environmental awareness and

Furthering its commitment, the Foundation successfully established five wildlife clubs, offering dedicated spaces for young enthusiasts to actively contribute to conservation efforts. Additionally, the creation of five publications enhanced the dissemination of information

on the environment. These impactful initiatives spanned across 10 regions, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive influence on environmental education throughout the country.

A Scavenger Hunt: Rediscovering Botanical Wonders in Georgetown In a quest to reignite the connection between the younger generation and nature, the Foundation organised a Scavenger Hunt at the Guyana Botanical Gardens on August 21, 2022. This event set out to reintroduce this central national area to a new audience and highlight its significance in Guyana's history and culture.

Approximately fifty participants took part in the activity, including members from the Caribbean Youth Environmental Network, the University of Guyana's Biology Club, and enthusiastic members of the public. At the conclusion of the friendly contest, the University of Guyana's Biology Club emerged as the winner, claiming the top prize for completing the scavenger hunt with remarkable speed and skill.

The high turnout at the Scavenger Hunt was compelling evidence that young people are deeply interested in engaging in environmental activities. By seamlessly blending outdoor activity with education, the EMC Foundation harnessed their energy and encouraged them to embrace the responsibility of becoming stewards of the environment.

Paint Mixers: Exploring Guyana's Ecosystems Through Art In a fun-filled celebration of Guyana's rich biodiversity, the EMC Foundation hosted a series of paint mixers to connect young minds with the beauty of the natural environment. More than 70 children participated in these activities, guided by talented Guyanese artists including Ransford Simon, Chris Bissessar, and Keyzah Bhola.

The initiative sought to bridge the gap between art and environmental awareness, offering children a colourful canvas to express their ideas about the natural world. The vibrant images created during these sessions displayed a great awareness, appreciation, and love for Guyana's ecosystems and biodiversity.

As Guyana experiences increased development, it is crucial to continue educating the younger generation, preparing them to become the future custodians of the environment. The paint mixers represent the Foundation's tangible effort to cultivate a generation that will play a vital role in safeguarding Guyana's ecosystems in the years to come.

Volunteer Connect: Fostering Engagement and Collaboration On November 5, 2022, the EMC Foundation hosted a dynamic Volunteer Connect event at Moray House, drawing the participation of approximately 16 enthusiastic young individuals. The event was designed to foster engagement through games, interactive trivia, and discussions focussing on Guyana, environmental topics, and the Foundation's mission During the event, volunteers engaged openly, sharing stories, and establishing common ground with remarkable energy and enthusiasm. The volunteers expressed a keen interest in working with the Foundation to promote environmental education and awareness in Guyana.

This interaction provided valuable insights for EMC Foundation coordinators, offering a better understanding of volunteers' interests, hobbies, and skills. This knowledge will serve as a basis for their contributions to the Foundation's initiatives through the year. Volunteer Connect was a vibrant platform for building connections, sharing ideas, and strengthening the collaborative spirit among the EMC Foundation and its dedicated volunteers.

Hidden Gems: Enhancing Environmental Education at the Botanical Gardens The EMC Foundation handed over the "Hidden Gems of the Botanical Gardens" booklet to the Protected Areas Commission (PAC) to enhance public engagement and understanding of the Gardens. Crafted by the Foundation, this booklet serves as a comprehensive guide to the diverse features and rich history of the Botanical Gardens, aiding visitors in navigating the expansive grounds while learning about its significance.

The initiative was valuable in expanding information sources on the Botanical Gardens, building relationships with the public, and highlighting the Garden's historical and recreational value.

The "Hidden Gems" booklet will soon reach the public through schools and local libraries, serving as a valuable outreach tool for the PAC. Copies were distributed to wildlife clubs and Agencies present, marking a significant step in promoting awareness and protection of this 150-year-old natural oasis.

The Secondary School Environmental Quiz The EMC Foundation hosted the 2023 Secondary School Environmental Quiz to inform, educate, and entertain the Guyanese public on environmental concepts and issues. Sixteen top secondary schools from coastal areas and the hinterland, spanning all ten regions of Guyana, engaged in spirited competition while learning about critical social and environmental concepts and issues.

The competition was a creative platform to elevate awareness and appreciation for Guyana's environment, encompassing its governance, cultural heritage, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Key topics such as climate change and Guyana's Low Carbon Development Strategy took centre stage, shaping a holistic understanding among participants and viewers alike.

After an intense four-round competition, Anna Regina Multilateral emerged as the quiz winner. In addition to their earlier prizes – backpacks, mobile phones, and electronic tablets – the team received trophies, laptops, and an exclusive tour of Kaieteur National Park. All participants, including students and teachers, received certificates of participation and backpacks filled with accessories and educational books The Quiz was broadcast to great reviews on NCN TV, Voice of Guyana, Guyana Learning Channel, and EdYou Radio from March 6 to May 28, 2023. It was a collaborative effort between the EMC Foundation, the Ministry of Education, and the Iwokrama International Centre, with support from the ExxonMobil Foundation.

Quiz Tours: Bridging Knowledge and Nature The Secondary School Environmental Quiz 2022 brought together 16 top schools in Guyana for a spirited competition, culminating in the triumphant victory for Anna Regina Multilateral and second place for North West Secondary.

For Anna Regina Multilateral, the tour to Kaieteur Falls was not just a journey to a natural wonder of the world but an awe-inspiring experience. Many students and teachers had only read about Kaieteur Falls in books or seen it on television, making this first-hand encounter a moment of genuine excitement. The tour, made educational with the support of a PAC ranger, provided insights into the area's rich history, culture, and the diverse flora and fauna that call it home.

North West Secondary, the deserving runners-up, added an extra layer of

excitement to their achievements with a unique prize – an immersive birding tour along the scenic Mahaica River. As they explored flourishing river ecosystems, the students were visibly excited to witness the Canje pheasant, Guyana's national bird, for the first time.

These tours went beyond rewarding academic prowess; they complemented their environmental knowledge, deepened the student's appreciation for Guyana's rich biodiversity, and allowed them to forge lasting memories and establish a deeper connection with Guyana's remarkable landscapes.

Plastic Pollution Panel: A Call to Action In anticipation of World Environment Day's 50th anniversary on June 5, 2023, the EMC Foundation hosted a panel on June 2nd to discuss plastic pollution in Guyana. The event aimed to highlight critical environmental concerns and spur tangible solutions.

The panel of five experts spanning the public and private sectors explored diverse perspectives on plastic pollution in Guyana. Notable figures on the panel included Kemraj Parsram, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); Paul Cheong of the Private Sector Commission; Shyam Nokta, Managing Director of EMC, and Yeşim Oruç, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations (UN) in Guyana.

The discussion revolved around seizing opportunities for recycling, reusing, and replacing plastics, tailored explicitly to Guyana's social, economic, and political landscape. The interactive dialogue, included audience engagement, and drew participants from companies, organisations, University of Guyana, and diplomatic missions.

At its conclusion, one critical question emerged, 'what next?" To try and answer this question, the EMC Foundation and the UN Resident Coordinator Office convened a Plastic Pollution Informal Working Group (PPIWG) in Guyana to move the discussions forward, share perspectives and ideas, and, through this, build and maintain interest and motivate action.

Guyana Through Your Eyes: Capturing Guyana's Nature and Culture The EMC Foundation held the "Guyana Through Your Eyes", a photography exhibition on August 19, 2023, at Castellani House in Georgetown to celebrate Guyana's environment and rich cultural heritage.

The exhibition marked the culmination of the 'Guyana through Your Eyes' photography competition that brought together the creativity and vision of over 100 talented photographers around Guyana. It showcased 21 carefully selected works, chosen by an expert panel of judges, including Michael Lam, Amanda Richards, and others..

Photography transcends class and language barriers and serves as a powerful tool for advancing environmental education and awareness. This impact was vividly demonstrated by the diverse attendees at the exhibition, including Honourable Charles S. Ramson, Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Honourable Oneidge Walrond, Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce,

Honourable Hugh Todd, Minister of Foreign Affairs, US Ambassador Sarah Ann Lynch, Mexico Ambassador Mauricio Vizcaíno Crespo, other Government officials and representatives from the diplomatic community, along with photographers, and students.

The exhibition was well attended and offered a glimpse into Guyana's diverse landscapes, people, and traditions. Beyond visual appeal, it deepened the participant's understanding of the environment, helped them make personal connections with nature, and visually advocated for its protection.

Guyana Through Your Eyes: Permanent Gallery at the UN in Guyana The EMC Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office, established the 'Guyana Through Your Eyes' Permanent Gallery at the UN House in Georgetown on December 12, 2023. This collection, curated from the EMC Foundation's photography exhibition at Castellani House on August 19, 2023, showcases the exceptional work of photographers across Guyana, paying homage to the nation's vibrant environment and cultural heritage.

The United Nations, with its global reach, stands as the ideal location to host this collection, spotlighting Guyana's cultural diversity and stunning ecosystems through the lens of talented photographers nationwide. These captivating images are poised to captivate diverse visitors, sparking curiosity and inspiring questions that contribute to heightened environmental awareness.

Mangrove Odyssey: A Coastal Expedition for Conservation In celebration of Mangrove Day on July 26, the EMC Foundation and the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) joined forces for the Mangrove Odyssey, a captivating journey along the Turkeyen to Ogle Seawall in Georgetown on July 30, 2023. This initiative aimed to highlight the significance of mangrove ecosystems and promote their sustainable management.

Led by NAREI rangers, participants learned about the mangroves' biodiversity and the challenges they face. A highlight of the journey was the discovery of various bird species and rangers sharing fascinating insights into their feeding habits, nesting behaviours, habitats, and migration patterns. The tour concluded with a visit to the NAREI signboard, a symbol of the ongoing commitment to mangrove conservation.

The Mangrove Odyssey served as an educational experience and a call to action, inspiring individuals to become active participants in conservation efforts and vocal advocates for the protection of these invaluable habitats.

Wildlife Clubs: Nurturing Environmental Stewardship in Guyana The EMC Foundation successfully collaborated with five coastal Amerindian communities, across Regions 1,2,3 and 5 to establish wildlife clubs at the nursery, primary, and secondary levels. These clubs, located in Santa Aratak, Wakapau, Warapoka, Moraikobai, and Saxacalli, play a pivotal role in connecting children with nature and instilling knowledge about sustainability, biodiversity, and the unique flora and fauna indigenous to the region.

The EMC Foundation remains dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse membership within these wildlife clubs, welcoming students from all backgrounds to actively participate in club activities. The strong support received from the respective communities, including parents and residents who share the Foundation's commitment to environmental education, is a testament to the success and sustainability of this initiative.

Beyond the immediate educational impact, these wildlife clubs serve as a broader platform for young individuals to explore the complex relationship between people and their environment. The clubs educate members and encourage them to actively engage in environmental conservation and community-driven initiatives.

These wildlife clubs offer opportunities for learning, growth, and active involvement in environmental conservation. The ongoing commitment of the five communities and their Village Councils to environmental conservation, coupled with the establishment of these wildlife clubs, aligns seamlessly with the shared goal of promoting good environmental management and conservation practices.

Marian Academy Tour of the Botanical Gardens On December 9, 2023, the EMC Foundation, in collaboration with the Protected Areas Commission (PAC), hosted a tour of the Botanical Gardens in Georgetown for students from the Marian Academy Environmental Club, their parents, and teachers. The activity aimed to showcase the diverse plant species and ecosystems within the Botanical Gardens, highlight its historical features, and inspire the younger generation to celebrate and preserve these natural treasures.

Each tour participant received the "Hidden Gems of the Botanical Gardens" booklet to inform their journey across the grounds. Led by a PAC guide, the tour showcased the Gardens' tropical flora, including palms, the lotus, and Guyana's national flower, the Victoria Regia Lily.

The group also explored historical monuments including the Bandstand, Jenman House, Kissing Bridges, Seven Ponds Mausoleum, Pineapple Fountain, and Floral Falls.

The Botanical Gardens provide an immersive environment for individuals to explore diverse plant species and ecosystems and learn about Guyana's history. The tour showed students the vital role of adopting sustainable practices in preserving natural habitats and emphasised the importance of collective efforts in building a more environmentally conscious society. It encouraged the students to get involved in protecting Guyana's Hidden Gems by offering a hands-on learning experience, sharing information, and promoting understanding.

Vibrant Publications The EMC Foundation developed five publications tailored for diverse audiences to share knowledge of Guyana's environment and contribute to the overarching mission to support environmental protection and education in the country. Each booklet combines engaging content with visually appealing design, ensuring that knowledge reaches a diverse audience in an accessible and impactful manner

Earth, Climate, and the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS): This handbook served as a valuable resource for students preparing for the 2023 Secondary School Environmental Quiz. It was designed to enhance understanding of climate change and the LCDS and contribute to the student's foundational knowledge of environmental awareness.

Hidden Gems Series: The EMC Foundation developed this series to highlight three areas of significance in Guyana: The Botanical Gardens, Saxacalli Rainforest Centre, and Mahaica River. The publications provide readers with an overview of the rich culture and biodiversity that defines each area and insights into their social and environmental fabric.

Nature Hunt: Exploring Guyana: Learning about Guyana's natural and cultural heritage takes a playful twist with the Nature Hunt word search booklet. Through fun and exciting puzzles, students engage with topics such as the Rivers of Guyana, Monuments of Guyana, and Indigenous Villages of Guyana.

GUYANA SECONDARY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTAL QUIZ 2023

Dynamic Media Engagement The EMC Foundation established a website and social media presence and leveraged various mediums to communicate its mission and activities. They also served as accessible channels to disseminate information and engage the public in environmental discourse.

Throughout the year, the Foundation ran engaging social media campaigns, using graphic design, video, and photography to educate the public. Notable campaigns included "Name that Hidden Gem," "Creature Feature," "Volunteer Features," and "Wildcats of Guyana." The Foundation also observed international environmental days, such as Biodiversity Day and Environment Day, and posted activity updates to keep supporters informed. Creative content shared on social media raised awareness and contributed to broader discussions on critical issues.

Partnerships In its inaugural year, the EMC Foundation formed impactful partnerships crucial to its success, with key support from the Guyana Government, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. Partnerships with Village Councils, NAREI and the EPA were integral to the Foundation's achievements.

International support came from the UN in Guyana, actively involved in various initiatives, and key backing from the Iwokrama International Centre and Exxonmobil Foundation for the Secondary School Environmental Quiz. GTT supported the photo competition.

Photographers and artists played a vital role in capturing and enhancing the Foundation's activities.

Collaborative efforts with media outlets NCN, Guyana Times, Guyana Chronicle, and Newsroom GY significantly amplified the Foundation's impact.

The EMC Foundation expresses heartfelt gratitude to all partners, supporters, and collaborators for their pivotal roles in shaping a year of impactful initiatives and shared success.
