People ALEX BUREK

WAYNE RAVENSCROFT

Alex Burek is the new marketing director of Charles Owen and Airowear. She is married to the safety manufacturer’s chairman Owen Burek, the fourth generation in the family business. Owen’s father, the influential equestrian safety expert Roy Burek, died last year.

Wayne Ravenscroft has joined equine and animal health wholesaler Trilanco as area sales manager for the south-west.

Alex is working with sales and partnerships director Danielle Santos on the British-made safety products’ marketing strategy. She has previously held retail and marketing roles, and is a rider.

Wayne’s is a familiar face as he’s previously worked in the industry. He has a degree in equine science and enjoys country pursuits in his spare time. “I’m extremely pleased to be joining Trilanco with its vast product range and excellent customer service,” he said.

OLIVER FRESE Oliver Frese is the new chief operating officer (COO) at Koelnmesse, the exhibition centre in Cologne, Germany which hosts the Spoga show.

“Roy always dreamed of bringing Alex and Owen into the family business,” said managing director Ricky Hone. “Alex is full of fresh ideas and her enthusiasm for the brand is infectious.” Alex, who owned her first Charles Owen helmet aged ten, added: “I often spoke with Roy about my ideas for the brand. It’s a real privilege to join the Charles Owen family and I look forward to supporting our brilliant team and valued customers.”

The 52-year-old was a trade fair manager with Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover until the end of 2018. Now he’s responsible for the development of Koelnmesse's entire event portfolio.

STEVE FAULKS

ANDREA SEXTON

Steve Faulks, of Faulks & Cox Ltd – now known as Red Gorilla – is due to retire in the early part of this year. Steve has been at the forefront of introducing many new products to the equestrian market, from Tyre Rubber skips in the early 1980s to today’s brightly coloured Tubtrugs and innovative Red Gorilla stable tools.

With 14 years in PR and marketing under her belt, Andrea Sexton has launched new company Admire PR.

Following Steve’s retirement, managing director Dean Cox is to take Red Gorilla forward on its many fronts in the building and construction, gardening and household sectors as well as the horse world. So what does Steve have planned for his retirement? “I thought I might take up wing-walking and tossing the caber,” he told ETN. “Then I thought ‘nah’, I’ll maybe read the odd book or two. “Most of all,” Steve added, “many thanks to all our customers for their support for over the past 40 years.” Steve is pictured (right) saying ‘cheerio’ to Dean Cox (left) and the Red Gorilla team.

“PR has altered a lot with the rise of digital and social media – but the fundamentals are still the same,” she said.

SIAN NASH Sian Nash has joined Science Supplements as its new marketing and communications manager. Sian’s ten-year career in marketing has included working for Weatherbeeta and the British Equestrian Federation (BEF). Most recently she was with Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) organiser Grandstand Media as sponsorship executive. Warwickshire based Sian is a keen rider who enjoys training and competing with British Dressage. She has represented England for the Central region at the Senior Home Internationals for the last four years. “I’m thrilled to be joining the team at Science Supplements at such an exciting time for the business,” said Sian. “I have used their products for years on my own horses and can’t wait to get stuck into my new role.”

BENCH SADDLER OF THE MONTH|ETN

Celebrating

the best bench saddlers and craftspeople…

This award, presented in conjunction with the Society of Master Saddlers (SMS), recognises those whose good practice is making a difference in the saddlery industry.

Chris Taylor: a talented bench saddler who generously inspires and teaches others.

ETN BENCH SADDLER OF THE MONTH: CHRIS TAYLOR NOMINATED BY: Award winning Master Saddler Frances Roche who says: “Chris is such a talented and kind man. He has trained many apprentices to a very high level and any of them will tell you how generous he is with his time and knowledge. “Chris was president of the SMS in 2018 and 2019 and has served on the executive committee for many years.” ABOUT Chris Taylor: Chris is based at Saddler’s Den in Southport, Merseyside which he established in 1996. The business provides saddlery workshop services – from making bespoke items to a complete repair and saddle fitting service. Chris had worked in the saddlery trade for many years prior to opening Saddler’s Den. He is a Master Saddler, SMS member, and a published author – his first book, Leatherwork: a Practical Guide was published in 2010. WWW.EQUESTRIANTRADENEWS.COM

Although his core business is saddlery, Chris has customers as varied as interior designers to fashion suppliers, the latter often buying for the Japanese market. Saddler’s Den also runs training courses in basic and advanced saddlery, bag making, saddle flocking and repair. “We can also tailor courses to meet people’s needs,” adds Chris.

TV SERIES From an early age, Chris was fascinated by how things worked. On joining the Scouts, he developed an interest in macramé and leatherwork. But it wasn’t until acquiring his own horse in his 30s that he wanted to know more about equestrian items. “I’m basically self-taught,” says Chris, “buying items at auctions, taking them apart and then rebuilding them. I’ve always looked at items and thought ‘I can do that’. “That’s not to say I know everything; the trade moves on and we are constantly learning.”

Chris’s most unusual commission came while he was working on the Kevin McCloud – Hut by the Beach TV series. The task was to get a raft to float using only sheep-skins for buoyancy. While he loves the variety of his work, Chris has a keen interest in history. “In 2007, I spent a month in China with Cambridge University’s archaeological department studying and reconstructing a 2,800 year old saddle,” he says. He’s also hugely enthusiastic about passing on his skills to the next generation of saddlers to ensure the trade survives. “Unfortunately, with the glut of imported items, the skills of the bench saddler can sometimes be overlooked; although the SMS has been actively promoting these skills in recent years.” For Chris, being a bench saddler is not a job, but a way of life. “It fires a passion to produce quality, well-made items,” he explains. “No two days are the same. I can honestly say that, since being in the trade, I’ve never woken up thinking ‘oh, no I’ve got to go to work’. I look forward to the challenges the day brings.” Having seen many changes in the industry over the years, Chris feels that research has contributed greatly to equine comfort when it comes to making and designing items. “However, to my mind, one of the greatest changes has been to the way in which we deal with customers. As we’ve become a more litigious society, saddlers have to be even more careful in what they do.”

HOW TO NOMINATE A BENCH SADDLER: The trade – are invited to nominate bench saddlers they feel deserve to be named ETN Bench Saddler of the Month. Candidates for the award must be a member of the SMS and based in the UK or overseas. To nominate a bench saddler (or more than one), email editor@ equestriantradenews.com and tell us why this person deserves to be put in the spotlight. Please include the bench saddler’s name and business name too.

ETN|BETTER RETAILING

Modern retail: what’s it all about? People buy from wherever is easiest and most convenient for them, says Grant Hadwin.

H

aving small children and watching them grow up in today’s society often makes me wonder about how the world is changing. Some changes are definitely for the better; others not so much. Particularly noticeable is how people’s behaviour is changing. The emergence of smart phones, and the fact everyone owns one, has created an impatient society of people who crave convenience. We have access to virtually everything we would ever need through a device that we carry in our pockets.

When I put my retail hat on, it’s easy to see how that change in people’s behaviour affects how they shop. Next time you’re out and about, take a look at the folk around you. I would imagine you’ll see the same as me; people crouched over, looking down at their mobile phone screens, either endlessly scrolling social media or browsing products they’re interested in.

HEALTHY CONSUMER DEMAND The ‘average equestrian customer’ spends 39% of their income on equestrian related products and

services, according to research by Onswitch, so I heard at the BETA Conference. This is a good indication of healthy consumer demand, which is great news for retailers. The key question is how to make the most of that demand – and make sure that people are coming to buy from you. Bearing in mind that people often browse and shop on their smart phones, it’s vital to be present online – so that when people are looking to buy, they find you. It’s a difficult truth, but you could be seriously missing out on customers and sales if you’re not showing your business online.

If a quick look on their phone tells a customer you’ve got what they want, and that it’s in stock, they’re likely to visit your store.

BETTER RETAILING|ETN

TWO CUSTOMER QUESTIONS

This increases their confidence and trust in you as a retailer, and vastly increases the likelihood of them visiting your store. Shoppers can then make an educated choice of how to make that purchase. Just pop down to the store because they can see you have plenty in stock, click and collect it, or get it delivered whenever suits them, thanks to flexible delivery options. People buy from wherever is easiest and most convenient for them. Here lies the point of my ramblings. As a retailer, you have to be easy to buy from – you have to fit your retail offering into your customers’ lives. If you make it easy for people to see what you have in stock and available to buy right now – and you can get that product to them in a way that’s convenient to them – then you’re onto a winner.

The modern customer journey can be split into two questions: ‘What do I want’ and ‘how can I get it? Research falls into the ‘What do I want?’ section, which almost always uses the internet as well as speaking to peers. People can use their phone to find product descriptions, read reviews, watch YouTube videos, study images and get recommendations on Facebook. Once that decision has been made, the focus becomes how to get hold of the new purchase as quickly and easily as possible. As I said earlier, we’re all impatient… Local independent retailers have a real advantage in this respect, because you’re so convenient to your community – provided customers know you’ve got what they want to buy.

“Fit your retail offering into your customers’ lives.”

About the author: Grant Hadwin is from CitrusLime, provider of retail solutions, including EPOS, stock control and e-commerce websites for independent retailers in the equestrian trade.

SHOWING YOUR STOCK By showing your stock and its availability online, people in your local area can take a quick look on their phone, see that you’ve got what they want, and that it’s in stock.
