Sweden Creates Jobs in the United States A look at Swedish economic and business ties with the United States
By Team Sweden US
SWEDEN AND THE US: A PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON STRONG ECONOMIC TIES
As Sweden’s Ambassador to the United States, I am proud of the long-standing economic ties between our countries. Since the first Swedes arrived in the US in 1638, Swedish entrepreneurship and business have been an integral part of the US economy. Today Sweden is the 13th largest investor in the US. Trade flows between our countries are substantial, and the US is Sweden’s largest trade partner outside Europe.
Innovation and sustainability are key to facing climate challenges, as well as to creating new business opportunities and jobs. Swedish companies are at the forefront of innovation and have a long tradition of finding sustainable solutions in their sectors. There is a great potential for further collaboration between Sweden and the US to find green solutions, innovations, and business opportunities to meet the climate challenges and goals.
In this fourth edition of “Sweden Creates Jobs in the United States,” I am encouraged to see that business and trade is continuously expanding between our countries. We have reached out to Swedish-affiliated companies all over the US to get updated numbers of how many jobs Swedish investments create in the US. Together with the jobs supported by US export to Sweden, the study finds, Sweden creates more than 367 000 jobs in the US, spread over all 50 states. With subcontractors and related services considered, the total number reaches almost one million jobs.
As a member of the European Union, Sweden values the strong transatlantic partnership between the US and the EU. Being close allies and each other’s largest markets, this relationship is fundamental, and we look forward to strengthening it further. Finally, I would like to emphasize the importance of the strong Team Sweden USA network. This study was made by the Embassy of Sweden in USA and the Consulate General of Sweden in New York together with the Swedish-American Chambers of Commerce of the USA and Business Sweden.

Sweden directly supports more than 367 000 jobs in the US. Swedish-affiliated companies in the US create 309 977 jobs in the country; export of services from the US to Sweden supports 36 936 jobs; and export of goods from the US to Sweden supports 20 395 jobs—367 308 jobs in total. The job numbers for businesses in this study are collected from 641 Swedish-affiliated companies in the US. The total number of Swedish-affiliated companies active on the US market is likely more than one thousand. When adding supporting jobs, suppliers, and subcontractors, the number of jobs supported approaches one million.
The Swedish companies accounted for in this study are based in 2 932 locations in all 50 states in the US, as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico. All 50 states export goods and services to Sweden. EU-US TRADE AND INVESTMENT RELATIONS The EU-US economic partnership is the single most important driver of global economic growth, trade, and prosperity. The EU and the US are each other’s main trading partners in goods and services, and account for the largest bilateral trade relationship in the world. The partnership between the EU and the US is based not only on trade but also on common values such as commitment to the rule of law, the democratic process, and respect for human rights.
The interconnected transatlantic economy generates 5.6 trillion USD in total commercial sales every year and employs up to 16 million workers in onshore jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. These jobs result from transatlantic trade in goods and services, foreign investment, and the activities of foreign affiliates in each other’s economies. The EU and the US account for about a third of the world’s GDP and trade, and 60 percent of foreign direct investment.
Sweden has been a member of the European Union since 1995.

METHODOLOGY
This report presents an overview of the economic impact of trade from Sweden to the United States, including estimated job-creation impact on both state and national levels. Total Jobs Supported: Total jobs supported is the sum of “Jobs Supported by Goods Exports,” “Jobs Supported by Services Exports,” and “Employment by Swedish-Affiliated Companies.” Jobs Supported by Goods Exports: This number is calculated based on a Department of Commerce study stating that 214 154 USD in goods exports support one job in the US. Exports of goods on the state and national level are from the International Trade Administration’s TradeStats Express tool. The difference in jobs numbers from the state levels to the national level is due to “unallocated” goods exports being included in the national level total. Jobs Supported by Services Exports: This number is calculated based on a Department of Commerce study stating that 180 528 USD in services exports support one job in the US. Exports of services on the national level are from the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ international data. Services exports are not available on the state level and are estimated by distributing total national services exports by state, according to the percentage of the annual average national service-providing workforce present in each state. The difference in jobs from the state level pages to the national level totals is due to the national level totals following the Bu-

reau of Labor Statistics’ definition of the “United States” as the 50 states and Washington DC, while this report also includes Puerto Rico. Employment by Swedish-Affiliated Companies: The national total of jobs supported by Swedish-affiliated companies was compiled from public financial disclosures, public self-reporting, and privately disclosed totals of employment by 181 Swedish-affiliated companies operating in the US. Six companies reported on “North America” or “the Americas” and had 75% of their reported jobs attributed to the US. For companies with no jobs total reported, 20 jobs were assigned to each known location. Jobs are distributed to the state level based on 2019 annual averages of percentage of employees by state from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ quarterly census of “Employment and Wages.” The difference in jobs from the state level pages to the national level totals is due to the national level totals following the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ definition of the “United States” as the 50 states and Washington DC while this report also includes Puerto Rico. Goods Exports: Total goods exports for 2019 are from the International Trade Administration’s TradeStats Express tool. Exports by HS category are from the Census Bureau’s “USA Trade Online.” Swedish Ancestry: This information is from the Census Bureau’s 2014–2018 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.
Swedish-Affiliated Companies: Swedish-affiliated companies were collected through input from the Embassy of Sweden in USA, the Consulate General of Sweden in New York, the Swedish-American Chambers of Commerce of the USA and regional chambers, the Honorary Consulates of Sweden, Business Sweden, and independent open-source research. Final nationality of ownership and registration were not the only factors considered. Companies headquartered in Sweden, traditionally considered Swedish, or founded by Swedes while Swedish citizens were also included to illustrate the large economic impact and job creation effects that Sweden has on the US. Foreign Direct Investment: Foreign direct investment for 2019 is on a historical-cost basis from the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ “Sweden Factsheet.” Other Sources: EU-US Trade Statistics - From Eurostat Statistics Explained: USA-EU - international trade in goods statistics. There are currently 443 IKEA stores in 59 markets around the world. In 1985, we opened our first US store right outside Philadelphia, and we’ve come a long way since then—continually evolving to meet and inspire our customers, whenever and however they like to shop with us. IKEA Retail US operates 51 customer-meeting points across the country, which includes 50 stores and one IKEA Planning Studio in Manhattan. The retail locations are supported by 11 distribution and customer fulfilment units, three service centers, and more than 18 000 coworkers who are passionate about home furnishings and making life better for many. As IKEA is a purpose-led brand, we aim to have a positive impact on people and the planet. Therefore, we have also invested in two windfarms, two solar parks, and 135 000 acres of forest in the US. When we began fiscal year 2020, no one could have imagined that a global pandemic would change our daily lives. Health and safety have always been a priority at IKEA, and it became paramount as we faced the reality of COVID-19. More than ever, during FY20 IKEA Retail US was driven by our shared values and purpose, and not by profits. Throughout the pandemic, we balanced the needs of the business while meeting the needs of our customers as they rediscovered a new meaning to life at home. Backed by the resilience and hard work of our coworkers, we came together to make life a little better for our customers and communities. While tested by these unexpected challenges, we remained focused on our coworkers and on making IKEA a great place to work, expanding our presence into city centers, our ongoing digital transformation, and a heightened focus on sustainability.

Tobii Dynavox is the world’s leading supplier of assistive technology for communication. Our products and ecosystem of resources empower people with disabilities to do what they once did or never thought possible. For some, this involves developing reading and writing skills, for others the ability to return to work. The ability to communicate and the opportunity for a more independent life often have a dramatic impact on quality of life for our users and their families. However, the percentage of people with access to assistive technology for communication is very low and varies greatly between countries, regions, and diagnoses, even in countries like the US where funding through public and private insurance is available. The main reason is inadequate knowledge of the value that assistive technology for communication creates for the individual and society. Tobii Dynavox has a broad portfolio that includes specially designed communication devices and software that can be controlled in many ways, including only using eye movements. The portfolio spans from communication apps to medical graded devices and is often financed through public or private funding systems. The same software can be used across different devices, and the simplest and least expensive communication solution involves apps used on ordinary consumer tablets, which serves as an effective method to raise awareness among new users and their families. Hundreds of thousands of people rely on Tobii Dynavox’s innovations every day. US state we’re located in: Pennsylvania

DID YOU KNOW? Almost 90% of the population lives in southern Sweden, where the three largest cities are located: Stockholm (the capital), Gothenburg, and Malmö. Swedish is the official language, but almost all Swedes also speak English fluently. Sweden recognizes five minority languages: Finnish, Meänkieli, Romani, Sami, and Yiddish. The Swedish right of public access (allemansrätten) gives everyone the right to roam freely in nature, no matter who owns the land. The basic principle is “don’t disturb, don’t destroy.” National parks and nature reserves cover a tenth of the country’s land area. In most Swedish families, both parents work. Women and men are entitled to a total of 480 days of paid parental leave per child to be shared between the parents.

THE STRENGTH OF SWEDISH BUSINESS Even with a population of just 10.5 million, Sweden is a leader in innovation. The country’s social stability, people’s access to government support, and high levels of equality—combined with a skilled workforce, clear business procedures, and low corporate taxes—have created a low-stakes business environment that fosters innovation and entrepreneurship. This helps explain why Sweden is the birthplace of several successful companies established in the United States and around the world. SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION In combination with its commitment to sustainability, Sweden’s innovative drive has given it a leading position in many sectors. Swedish companies, such as Scania, H&M, SSAB, Stora Enso, IKEA, and Volvo, are at the forefront of integrating a sustainable approach to business in their strategies and daily management. The cleantech industry is one of Sweden’s most important future export industries.

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH The Swedish economy is supported by a highly educated workforce (college is free for Swedish citizens and about one-third of the population has postsecondary education) and significant investments in research and development (R&D). At 3.4%, the proportion of Sweden’s GDP that goes to R&D is one of the highest in the world. Early efforts to promote digitalization has also turned Sweden into one of the most connected countries in the world; today, more than 95 percent of Swedes have access to the internet.

THE STRENGTH OF SWEDISH BUSINESS SUPPORTING WORKERS Sweden has a long tradition of supporting employees to bolster business resilience and efficiency, including through vocational training systems and job security councils. Workers’ rights are one of the cornerstones of the modern Swedish labor market, and a majority of the working population is unionized. Collective bargaining has created an environment in which the health and safety of employees is a key priority. Labor unions also work with employers and the government to support laid-off workers rather than preserving outdated job functions. Sweden’s strong support for workers, in combination with exposure to global competition, has allowed Swedish companies and industries to reinvent themselves without leaving their employees behind. In

international comparisons, Swedes stand out as holding overwhelmingly positive views about job prospects in areas such as technology, robotics, and artificial intelligence. By encouraging shared participation in childcare and offering generous and gender-neutral parental leave, Sweden makes it possible for both parents to combine work and family life. A VIBRANT START-UP SCENE The Swedish capital, Stockholm, is second only to Silicon Valley in the number of successful start-ups per capita in the world—a so-called unicorn factory. Given the small size of the Swedish market, many Swedish entrepreneurs plan for scaling globally from day one. Today, start-ups are a key part of the broader innovation strategy for Swedish competitiveness and growth, and the government aims to foster an environment in which creative individuals feel financially secure enough to dare to test their ideas. You may recognize the names of some successful start-ups from Sweden: Spotify, Skype, Klarna, King (creator of Candy Crush Saga), and Mojang (creator of Minecraft).

GENDER EQUALITY IS SMART ECONOMICS Gender equality is vital to economic growth and prosperity; sustainable development cannot be achieved if half of the population is excluded. Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most gender-equal countries in the world. COMBINING WORK AND FAMILY LIFE In Sweden, the state and municipalities provide affordable childcare, elderly care, and generous and gender-neutral parental leave. This enables both parents to combine work and family life. It also supports gender equality and business productivity. Childcare: All families are guaranteed access to affordable and high-quality public childcare. Fees are proportional to the parents’ income with a cap of 175 USD per month.
Parental leave: Women and men are entitled to a total of 480 days of paid parental leave per child, to be shared between the parents. Three months are reserved for each parent on a use-it-or-lose-it basis. In addition, the father or other parent is entitled to ten days of paid leave in connection with the birth or adoption of a child.
PROUD, BUT NOT SATISFIED Sweden has come far, but challenges remain. Women still earn less than men and remain underrepresented in top management roles in the private sector.

In 1971, Sweden abolished the system of joint taxation of spouses, increasing the incentive for women to work as their income was no longer considered part of their husband’s.
•
In 1974, Sweden became the first country in the world to replace gender-specific maternity leave with parental leave.
•
In 1980, gender discrimination in the workplace became illegal.
•
In 1995, Sweden introduced the first pappamånad—“daddy month”—with 30 days of leave reserved for the father on a use-it-or-lose-it basis. This year, parents were also given the right to decrease their working hours (and pay) by up to 25% until their child turned eight years old without risk of losing their jobs.

In 2014, the Swedish government became the first in the world to declare itself feminist and adopt a feminist foreign policy, placing gender equality at the center of both its domestic and international work. In 2019, the Swedish government also adopted a feminist trade policy to ensure that trade benefits women and men equally.

INNOVATION AND RESEARCH entrepreneurship. Another significant reason is the socalled triple helix model, whereby academia, industry, and government collaborate to identify, research, and develop innovative technologies and services. Many Swedish companies have succeeded in part due to their innovativeness, including Volvo, Ericsson, ABB, Tetra Pak, and AstraZeneca. Minecraft and Spotify belong to the new generation of Swedish technological successes. ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST INNOVATIVE NATIONS Several global indices rank Sweden in the top five of countries when measuring research spending as a percentage of GDP and in the top twenty of countries when measuring the number of patents per capita. Approximately 70% of all of Sweden’s R&D is financed by companies.

With inventions such as Anders Celsius’s thermometer in the 1700s, Alfred Nobel’s dynamite in the 1800s, and Nanna Svartz’s development of the medicine Salazopyrin in the 1900s, Sweden has long been ranked as one of the world’s leading innovative nations. Social, economic, and political factors contribute to Swedes’ innovative spirit; Sweden invests heavily in research, encourages critical thinking from an early age, and embraces international influences. HOME OF THE NOBEL PRIZE Alfred Nobel is one of the most famous Swedish innovators of all time. Nobel was a chemist, engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur who held 355 patents and is best known for his discovery of dynamite. In his will, Nobel specified that his fortune was to be dedicated to prizes in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace “to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank, established the prize in economic sciences in memory of Nobel. The first Nobel Prize was awarded to Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, in 1901, for his discovery of X-rays.
The award ceremonies are held annually on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, in the Swedish capital, Stockholm. The Nobel Peace Prize award takes place in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The Nobel Prize continues to encourage scientists, researchers, writers, and peace advocates in their work. The Nobel Prize is broadly considered to be the most prestigious award in the world.
In 1903, Marie Curie became the first woman to be honored with a Nobel Prize when she was named a joint winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics for her research on radioactivity.
More than 380 Americans have been awarded the Nobel Prize—more than any other nationality in the world.

HEALTH AND LIFE SCIENCES: ENABLING TOMORROW’S HEALTH-CARE SOLUTIONS Life sciences improve patients’ health and strengthen their confidence in the care and treatment that they receive. Data-driven solutions and scientific advances have a significant impact on developments in prevention, diagnostics, treatment, monitoring, habilitation, and rehabilitation that pave the way for personalized care, or precision medicine. Sweden has a flourishing life-sciences environment characterized by close collaboration between academia, health care, and industry, as well as sustained government investment in R&D. Thanks in part to a thriving ecosystem of researchers, experienced serial entrepreneurs, and angel investors, there are many start-ups in the life sciences. Rapidly growing markets include medical devices, such as imaging equipment, orthopedic implants, dialysis equipment, heart-lung machines,
and ECG equipment. Swedish companies, such as Getinge and Elekta, offer the global market products and systems that contribute to quality enhancement within health care and life sciences. Sweden aims to be the leader in using digitization and e-health opportunities by the year 2025.
The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated the importance of life sciences and cross-sectoral collaboration in crisis management and societal resilience.

COMBINING ECONOMIC GROWTH WITH ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY In Sweden, both the private and public sectors agree that climate-smart and sustainable companies are more competitive in the global market. Legislation as well as environmental awareness have made Swedish companies both innovative and efficient in their operations. Low-impact production techniques, in particular within industrial production, are often exported to other countries. Sweden aims to be a leader in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development— both nationally and globally. The coronavirus pandemic has made the importance of addressing pressing global challenges, such as climate change, even more evident. BECOMING THE FIRST FOSSIL-FREE NATION Sweden has managed to significantly increase its GDP while lowering its greenhouse gas emissions. Between 1990 and 2018, Swedish GDP grew by 85% while emissions from Swedish territory fell by 27%. The Swedish government has set ambitious goals for sustainability,

Biological waste—such as food waste that has not been composted to make soil—can be used to produce biogas, which serves as fuel and for heating or electricity generation. Sweden is a front-runner when it comes to the transformation of separately collected food waste to energy. Swedish food producers are also among the world’s leading innovators in the fields of sustainable farming and organic food production.
THE SMART AND SUSTAINABLE CITY: MEETING THE URBAN CHALLENGE Cities around the world are growing, and more people are moving from rural to urban areas. Almost 70% of the world’s population is expected to live in cities by 2050, and as cities continue to grow, they need to develop in ways that are resident-friendly and sustainable. Smart cities use information and communication technologies to improve the quality, performance, and interactivity of local government services; reduce costs and resource consumption; and improve relations between citizens and government authorities. The coronavirus pandemic has further shown the possibilities of designing more decentralized and sustainable cities and communities. Vallastaden, in Linköping, is a new neighborhood built for the future. Timber is used as structural building material, and a pilot four-story building is created to facilitate changes over time. Interior walls, windows, and balcony doors can be moved with little effort.
The need for sustainable and smart mobility is becoming increasingly critical in urban areas all over the world. Mobility is key to creating a green, smart, and sustainable city.
In a smart city, innovations, digitalization, and environmental and climate technologies create opportunities for meeting society’s challenges in an efficient and sustainable way. Cities should provide an environment in which people can live without wasting the earth’s resources.

THE SMART AND SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY: UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL The Swedish journey toward net-zero emissions is underway. The Fossil Free Sweden initiative has encouraged business sectors to set their own goals and road maps for how to lower their emissions and contribute to achieving the Paris Agreement targets. In these road maps, industries describe when and how they will reach their goals, what technological solutions need to be developed, what investments need to be made, and what obstacles need to be removed.

TESTBED SWEDEN: USE SWEDEN AS A TEST SITE EDTECH: A TESTBED FOR DIGITAL LEARNING SERVICES Sweden’s first national EdTech testbed is designed to help businesses sharpen the development of new digital-learning services and to narrow the gap between learning and digital development. By doing so, digital tools and teaching methods can be developed together, address real needs in the classrooms, and strengthen teachers’ competence to choose and evaluate learning resources.
Swedes are early adopters of new products and services. This makes Sweden a great place for companies to test new ideas, whether in advanced laboratories simulating real-life situations or in real environments such as hospitals, schools, streets, or autonomous remote airports. The Swedish private and public sector research environments are characterized by an openness that actively fosters teamwork, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and innovation. Real-life test environments benefit business, academia, and civil society alike. These test environments, referred to as testbeds, are increasingly important as goods and services become more complex and are developed more rapidly. The Testbed Sweden initiative encourages international companies and investors to demonstrate their products and services in one of the hundreds of testbeds available in Sweden. These testbeds generally fall into one of three categories: laboratory environment, simulated environment, or real environment. HAMMARBY SJÖSTAD 2.0: A TESTBED FOR CLIMATESMART IDEAS Hammarby Sjöstad, located in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, has become a unique testbed that attracts researchers from colleges and universities around the world. The aim is to transform the goals of the Paris Agreement into practical measures on a local level through the introduction of smart and renewable energy, sustainable transport, energy-efficient houses, electric buses, and electric cars by 2030. Hammarby Sjöstad 2.0 is a testbed for new sustainable solutions that can be implemented in other districts and municipalities, both in Sweden and abroad.

CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Sweden has experienced a creative revolution over the past decades that has attracted worldwide attention and produced substantial new export income. Today, Sweden is an international leader in fashion, gaming, and music. FASHION AND DESIGN Sustainability and tech are driving change in the fashion and design industries. Sweden is widely known for its fashion industry—with brands such as Acne Studios, Filippa K, House of Dagmar, Rodebjer, J. Lindeberg, COS, Nudie, and H&M—which invests considerably in research and strives toward more sustainable production. The aim is to transition from linear production to circular, whereby materials are not discarded but instead recycled or reused to minimize waste.
GAMING Sweden has become a hotbed for the video-game industry. One person out of every eight in the world has played a game developed in Sweden, ranging from Candy Crush Saga (King) to Battlefield. Candy Crush Saga, created by Sebastian Knutsson, was downloaded almost 3 billion times in its first five years, while Minecraft (Mojang), created by Markus “Notch” Persson, has more than 120 million active players around the world.
MUSIC Many of your favorite songs on the Billboard top 10 were created by Swedish artists and producers. Sweden is a leading exporter of music, and many Swedes have created popular songs for the American music industry, thereby generating revenue and jobs on this side of the Atlantic. The same is true of groundbreaking music distribution platforms, such as SoundCloud.
