hey say all things are created at least twice, firstly in ones mind and then in the physical world. I clearly remember the very moment Embassy Direct was first envisaged. Of course I didn’t realise it, at the time, but it’s easy enough for me to look back and pinpoint the very first thought that led to what you are holding in your hands and reading, right now (or are reading online). It’s a story I’ve retold many times but, for those who do not know, here’s the short version. I was shoe shopping with a princess and an ambassadors wife, as I couldn’t find a professional shopper to assist, with the task. At the same time I also had to source a penthouse rental, Persian rug, helicopter transfer and two chihuahua’s. I remember thinking to myself ‘how am I making money on chihuahua resales? I need a little black book for Ambassador’s’. Today that little black book is not so little and strives to connect providers of quality services & products, with the expatriate community (both diplomatic and corporate) ... although I must admit that we’re still thin on the professional shoe shoppers and chihuahua sales contacts. I mention this story again not only for those who do not know it, but also because of the situation that the world currently finds itself in. Embassy Direct chose, from the get go, to focus on good news stories, from The African Continent and to come up with dynamic ways to connect our advertisers (members). Whilst thinking on my introductory letter, I considered the amount of negativity out there and pondered on not including the words ‘coronavirus’ or ‘pandemic’ at all. Voldemort, from the Harry Potter books and films came to mind - a word not to be uttered out loud. My reasoning was more to do with saturation and how to mention them whilst still focusing on the good news. The words have become closely associated with the loss of both life and livelihoods, at the same time delivering the worst mass symptom to hit the world ... that of fear. Social media and news outlets seemed to be infected

with more quantity and negatively than ever before. We have been understandably captivated as most of the globe has felt the affects, directly or indirectly. Fake news has also moved into top speed. That said, before writing this article, it was time to dig deep and focus on what was positive and good, over the past year. The medical world has worked tirelessly on a solution and we pray that they will succeed. I’ve read that the lockdowns have had a positive impact on the environment with air and water quality receiving much needed relief. Whist those are positive and important topics I’m not referring to the reduced use of fossil fuels and the scientific data. For this note I’m referring more to our mindsets. Many have asked themselves what is important to them and are looking to a simpler way of living. Life is beautiful. It may not always be easy but there is always an abundance of beauty. Our time on earth is finite - we need to look to our why’s and ask ourselves new and better questions. The Embassy Direct Team wishes our readers great wisdom, strength, love and fortitude - there is always good, make sure to seek it out. Lastly, I’d like to thank my team and all of those who contributed to making this publication a reality. ow long have you been the head of Mission of your country, to South Africa? I arrived in South Africa in September 2019, and handed my letters of credentials to the South African President on the 15th of October 2019. Are you representing your Mission at any other SADC countries as well? Yes, I am also representing France in Lesotho and Malawi! Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and if not where else have you served as such? This is my first posting as Head of Mission. During my career, I have been posted to the United States and Lebanon, and before coming to South Africa I was Deputy Diplomatic Ae to the French President, Mr Emmanuel Macron. What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? Our two countries have been linked by a strategic partnership since

1994. This translates to a very dense cooperation in education, new technologies, culture or industry. South Africa is also a key partner of France in our new approach to the African continent. In his speech in Ouagadougou (2017), the French President outlined his ambition to develop the partnership between France and Africa, on the issues of peace and security, global health, climate, biodiversity and economic and cultural partnerships. Can you mention any of your country’s multinationals that operate in South Africa? 370 French companies are established in South Africa, representing 65 000 jobs. Among them at least 30 international groups are present such as Air Liquide, Alstom, BNP Paribas, Bolloré, Danone, EDF, Engie, Faurecia, Havas, JC Decaux, Lactalis, L’Oréal, SaintGobain, Sanofi, Schneider Electric, Veolia,… There is also a growing presence of French brands in the retail sector with Leroy Merlin and Decathlon. What South African brands and companies have a presence in your country?

I would recommend hiking in the Drakensberg region, the landscape is truly spectacular! Currently, the most significant South African investment in France comes from Aspen Pharma group, but I think that there is a potential for more investment projects in the coming years, notably in the context of the Brexit. If someone visiting from your country only had time to see one SA destination, which one would you recommend to them and why? I would recommend hiking in the Drakensberg region, the landscape is truly spectacular! And it’s probably the Frenchman in me speaking, but I would not miss Franschhoek. It has such wonderful architecture, history, and of course beautiful wines! Does your country have a Chamber of Commerce, or does your Mission have a Trade Attache? Please share their details, for those readers interested in making contact for business purposes. The French South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FSACCI) was created in 1979 and is very active (fsacci@fsacci.co.za). Within the Embassy, the Department of Economic Affairs for Southern Africa is working to strengthen bilateral economic, commercial and financial relations (pretoria@dgtresor.gouv. fr). Business France is also available to advise South African companies who want to invest in France, and to facilitate new partnerships between French exporters and South-African importers or distributors (johannesburg@businessfrance.fr). Do South African passport holders require a visa to visit your country and if that is the case how can they proceed to apply for one? Yes, South African passport holders require a visa to visit Metropolitan France. They need to apply for a Schengen visa, which is valid in the 26 European countries that form the Schengen area. Once initiated online through the FranceVisas Portal - the official website for visa application to France - the application is then submitted to the Capago visa center, and within 48 hours, the visa is processed by the French consulate in Johannesburg or in Cape Town. South African passport holders do not need a short stay visa to go to La Reunion island, which is a 4 hours flight away from South Africa. [depending on time of publication] Please be aware that due to the covid-19 pandemic, additional restrictions might be put in place. For up-to-date travel information, South African travelers can consult the French Consulates websites. 2020 was a challenging year for the world. Are you able to share a positive message with Embassy Direct’s readers? France and South Africa were hit hard by Covid, but in these difficult times we stood together. Through the COVAX initiative, we will be able to provide vaccine to those most in need. In 2021, the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020 will gather in Marseille to address the issue of biodiversity. Also in 2021, the Forum Generation Equality will seek to galvanize efforts to empower women and girls. We are working on all those important challenges to bring hope to the world.

ow long have you been the head of Mission of your country, to South Africa? I arrived in South Africa as Head of the Dominican Mission in March 2019. So I have been here for two years this March 2021. Are you representing your Mission at any other SADC countries as well? So far only in South Africa. But the new administration of the Dominican government that began this past August 2020 led by our President His Excellency Luis Abinader and Foreign Minister Roberto Mr. Alvarez have an interest in expanding Dominican relations with the SADC and African Union countries as well.

South Africa can take advantage of the Dominican Republic as a logistics centre to expand into the Caribbean and Central American region. We have free trade agreements and a great international connectivity with 12 international airports, 440 daily flights, 12 ports and 3 cruise ports. We want to export Dominican products to the South African market. And expand our cultural relationships. We want to promote cultural diplomacy so that South Africans know that the Dominican Republic has a lot of African influence including in our smile, music and food.

Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and if not where else have you served as such? I was Head of the Dominican Mission in South Korea from 2004 to 2010. Then, Head of the Dominican Mission in Colombia from 2010 to 2013. I began my diplomatic career in 1996 as Deputy Consulate of the Dominican Republic in New York City. South Africa is my third assignment as a Head of Mission.

Can you mention any of your country’s multinationals that operate in South Africa? The Dominican Republic has recently launched the Country Brand in the current administration. There is great potential for ferronickel, medical instruments, circuit breakers, cigars, tobacco leaves, dental floss, and Dominican rum for trade into South Africa. We are confident that soon we will also be able to have cocoa, coffee, green bananas and precious stones such as larimar and amber as well as beautiful pineapple and large Dominican avocados in the South African market.

What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? We are interested in strengthening bilateral cooperation with South Africa. We want to deepen the agreement with Political Consultations that my country signed with South Africa in 2019. It is important that

excellent investment climate in the Dominican Republic. In our country there is an excellent incentive system in the free zone sector with 100% tax exemption. We have many well-known brands from the US, such as Hanes, Tiffany, Boeing, Adidas, cK, Timberland, Johnson and Johnson, among others, but we are missing famous brands from South Africa. If someone visiting from your country only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend them and why? South Africa, like the Dominican Republic, has many beautiful destinations. Cape Town is excellent. It combines mountains, sea and tourism in the wineries and on the island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. The Dominican Republic has a tourism of beautiful beaches, with everything included, as well as ecological tourism and historical tourism. Our capital Santo Domingo is the first city in the New World discovered in 1492. Does your country have a Chamber of Commerce, or does your Mission have a Trade Attaché? Please share their details, for those readers interested in making contact for business purposes. We are very interested in forming a Dominican-South African chamber with businessmen who want to have more information about the Dominican Republic and the business opportunities it offers for South Africa and African countries, and more especially when starting the Free Trade Agreement of the African Union, in 2021. Tourists with a South African passport do not require a visa to enter the Dominican Republic. Although the passports of Dominican tourists do need a South African visa. And you have to go to Cuba or Jamaica to ask for it. It is an issue in which we are trying to achieve a visa reciprocity process. We would also like to establish a South African Embassy in the Dominican Republic. 2020 was a challenging year for the world. Are you able to share a positive message with Embassy Direct’s readers? Although 2020 has been a very difficult year globally due to the issue of the pandemic, it has also allowed us to generate new innovations in the way we can do diplomacy. Through virtual conferences we can be closer in less time. It’s about bringing the positives out of the negatives.

ow long have you been the head of Mission of your country to South Africa? I arrived in South Africa on 9th June 2020. It was the time of holy month Ramadhan. I then presented my credential to President Ramaphosa on 3rd of June 2020. As mandated by the President, the Embassy’s priority is to improve economic diplomacy, without undermining other sectors of bilateral cooperation, as Indonesia and South Africa have a solid ground in their relations through the Strategic Comprehensive Partnership, which was signed in 2008, that has opened up the windows of opportunities for both countries. Are you representing your Mission at any other SADC countries as well? Yes, my accreditation covers the Republic of South Africa, Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Eswatini, and the Kingdom of Lesotho. Indonesia has always committed to collaborate with SADC countries in a number of areas, including infrastructure development, private sector partnerships, and sharing of technical expertise. Indonesia and SADC have agreed to cement the relations by having an Action Plan which will detail the areas of cooperation and collaboration.

Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and, if not, where else have you served as such? I began my career at the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1987 followed by assignments to various Missions such as in Bangkok, Thailand, then at the Indonesian Permanent Mission in New York and also at the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC. Assignment in South Africa is my second Ambassadorial post after United Arab Emirates in 2012-2015. What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? Interestingly, the relations between Indonesia and South Africa date back more than 360 years when the first group of Indonesians arrived in Western Cape, those who were forced-migrated by the Duch colonial included the well-known Muslim clerics, Syaikh Yusuf and Tuan Guru. Politically, the relations started with the Bandung Conference in 1955, which was attended by Moses Kotane and Maulvi Cachalia from the ANC. Since then, Indonesia became one of the fiercest critics of apartheid and supported the struggle of Nelson Mandela. Economically, South Africa is Indonesia’s largest trading partner in Africa. We are keen for this relationship to grow and believe that the two countries have great complementarities and potential in economies. We still have more potential sectors yet to be explored : pharmaceutical industry, textile, manufactured products, startup business to strategic industries such as weaponry, railway, and airplanes. Can you mention any of your country’s multinationals that operate in South Africa? We have not had the opportunity to have an outbound investment from Indonesia to South Africa, and we are working on that. Nevertheless, we are now exploring the opportunities in aviation, Food & Beverage, tourism, and manufacturing sectors. And to your surprise, Indonesian products have been already entering the South Africa markets, from palm oil to instant noodles, from coconut milks to cars. Even some of the Indonesian companies have already had their representatives and distributors in South Africa, like Indofood and Mayora. What South African brands and companies have a presence in your country? We are happy that South African companies already have a presence in Indonesia, doing outbound investment both direct or indirect in some sectors, such as energy and digital technologies. And knowing the reputation of South African wine, we can also find some South African wines in Indonesia. If someone visiting from your country, only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend them and why? It is indeed a tricky question knowing what this country could offer, because South Africa is blessed with abundance of natural beauty, exotics wild animals, amazing heritage, and many other must visit destinations. To simplify the answer, I would say it depends on the visitor’s appetite. For those who are keen for a highly developed tourism destination like Bali, then it is Cape Town you have to go for. If visitors keen for outdoor and safari experience, then they should

try the Kruger National Park as one of the largest conservatories in the world. For those who love road trip, then they should try to travel the Garden Route in the south or Panorama Route in the North. Before the pandemic, Indonesia provided special Short Stay Visa Free facilities for tourists from a total 169 countries who wish to travel to Indonesia, including for South African, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini. However, due to the pandemic, all foreign nationals who will visit Indonesia must apply for a Visa. Starting from 15th October 2020, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia provides an e-Visa for foreigners who have specific activities in Indonesia. Therefore, foreign visitors do not need to go to the Indonesian Mission in South Africa to apply or to print Visa sticker. The free visa facility for South African’s passport holder has been extended by the Government of Indonesia since 2015. It is about time for South African government to reciprocate the gesture in order to promote closer and strengthen people-to-people relationship and further increase number of Indonesian tourists to the beautiful South Africa. 2020 was a challenging year for the world. Are you able to share a positive message with Embassy Direct’s readers? The year 2020 will be the year of reminder for us all, a reminder that we have been enjoying privileges that we took for granted, such as being able to enjoy social interaction with others freely, to gather with family and friends with no restriction at all. Now those privileges have been limited, we became aware that for a human being, it is hard to live without each other. I think the same analogy also applies to how international world works. In these challenging times, countries seek each other, to help and cooperate with each other. This has created a tremendously positive spirit which is shared by every country, a spirit of cooperation. If one thing that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us all, it is that one common enemy has bring us closer with each other. Now I would like to urge my fellow South African colleagues to preserve this spirit of cooperation and take this momentum to create a mutually beneficial partnership with Indonesia in our future endeavours.

Are you representing your Mission at any other SADC countries as well? That is correct. Concurrently, I am Russia’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotho. So, my Mission represents Russia in two SADC Member States.

Russia and South Africa profess similar approaches to the modern multipolar world. Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and if not where else have you served as such? Indeed, this is my first posting as Head of Mission. I am honoured to represent my country abroad, especially in Russia’s very important political partner and a beautiful country such as South Africa. What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? Russia and South Africa profess similar approaches to the modern multipolar world. We are working closely on international level, in the framework of various international organizations such as the UN, G20 and, of course, BRICS. Our two countries are also developing a comprehensive, mutually beneficial cooperation in various areas: trade, economics, sports, arts and culture. Can you mention any of your country’s multinationals that operate in South Africa? Yes, there are several Russian companies operating in the South African market. This includes Renova Group (manganese ore extraction, ferroalloys production), Trabsmashholding-Africa (manufacturing and repairing of the railway equipment), Rosatom (nuclear energy), AxxonSoft and Kaspersky Laboratory (software). Gazprombank-Africa (financial services), Lukoil (energy), several companies in the field of agriculture and other enterprises. What South African brands and companies have a presence in your country? Today the largest South African economic operator in Russia is Naspers media holding which is now actively expanding its footprint on Russian market. Alongside Naspers, there are a number of other South African companies represented in my country – Bell Equipment, Aspen Pharmacare, Mondi, SA breweries, Barloworld. If someone visiting from your country, only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend them and why? This seems to be the hardest question so far. I think South Africa is too beautiful and versatile to pick one particular destination. My recommendation would be to stay a bit longer and embark on a trip around the country. Every province has its own unique landmarks and attractions, such as the Table Mountain and wineries in Western Cape, Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng or Kruger National Park which is in two provinces at the same time – Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

ow long have you been the head of Mission of your country, to South Africa? Since 01/12/1995, South Africa and Guatemala have established diplomatic relations. Until the end of 2019, the Embassy of Guatemala in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was in charge of the concurrent representation in South Africa. As of July 1, 2019, I was appointed Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Guatemala accredited to the Republic of South Africa, having the honor of presenting the credential letters to President Cyril Ramaphosa on October 15, 2019. Are you representing your Mission at any other SADC countries as well? Not yet, but we are working on it. For Guatemala, the African continent represents an undiscovered universe and a vast source of opportunities for mutual cooperation. Although we have a lot of distance between us, not only geographical, but also knowledge gaps between one and the other cultures, Guatemala is doing its best to extend its focus and ties to Africa. But this requires time and resources. Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and if not where else have you served as such? My strong backgrond is in military, strategy and geopolitical studies. I have the honor of being a retired General of the Army of Guatemala, where I served for more than 35 years. I was Deputy Join Chief Staff and have acted as Legal Adviser to the

However, South Africa is the first country in which I have been accredited as Ambassador of Guatemala, and as in everything in life, this country will be my great feeling in my diplomatic career. What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? South Africa and Guatemala are similar in terms of enjoying an important cultural and linguistic diversity, a great inheritance of ancestral traditions and cosmovision. Our country offers a top quality tourist destination, in addition to products such as sugar, coffee, cocoa, textiles, among others, which have enormous potential for relations between our two countries. Guatemala chooses to diversify its markets and South Africa is an excellent partner to do so, not only because of its commercial exchange capacity, but because in Guatemala we are also a good partner with growing infrastructure and one of the most competent countries in the Central American region. Our initial approaches to focus our work in South Africa during this first year have been to explore opportunities for commercial exchange, as well as the promotion of Guatemala as a tourist destination, to promote cooperation both in the academic area and in the labor area. Can you mention any of your country’s multinationals that operate in South Africa? No Guatemala multinational is not currently operating in SA. However, we have worked for several months to establish connections between the chambers of industry and commerce between both countries. In the coming days we will sign a memorandum of understanding to further formalize this strategic alliance that we hope will be of great mutual benefit. What South African brands and companies have a presence in your country? Yes, there are some companies of both countries operating in commercial issues. According to the data of the Bank of Guatemala, in the period from January to May 2020, a commercial exchange was recorded between Guatemala and South Africa equal to about USD 5,010,800. During the last five years, the historical trade balance between Guatemala and South Africa presents an average value of $65,000,000 MILLION DOLLARS. If someone visiting from your country, only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend them and why? This question is difficult to respond, both because there are many quality options and also depending on the season. I have had to suggest before this, but instead of choosing, I recommended better to come to South Africa with enough time and trying to visit the 4 cardinal points to see the wonders that this country offers. However, if there are time constraints, perhaps because of the exotic it is for us the Latinos, I would suggest visiting the Garden Route in summer, from Port Elizabeth through Mossel Bay and if possible, continue west to reach Cape Town. All South African passport holders are exempted of the requirement for non-immigration visa to visit Guatemala. Since that South Africa is listed in Category A in the Guatemalan Immigration Policy, all category of passport holders are exempted from port of entry visa requirements and can stay in the country up to three months per visit. Two months ago, and in the spirit of strengthening the friendship relation between our two nations, and framed in the principle of reciprocity, the Embassy has proposed to the Department of Home Affairs the granting of the exemption of non-immigrant visa to all Guatemalan citizens who wish to travel to South Africa. Although, Guatemalan passport holders are exempt from entry visa for the Schengen countries, as well. We are awaiting the positive response to our proposal. 2020 was a challenging year for the world. The challenge of each day has been accentuated by the Working conditions of self-care and lockdown that have restricted our daily lives everywhere in the world. But little by little we are defeating the virus, we are showing that we are capable of understanding and dealing with the limiting conditions that are necessary to end once and for all with a pandemic situation that no one has been able to foresee. Humanity, countries, populations have the common sense to be able to reach a healthy and definitive solution and the necessary resilience to overcome adverse times and recover our lives in a better scenario. The UN Country Team in South Africa consists of: FAO, UNWomen, UNDP, UNODC, UNHCR, OHCHR, UNICEF, UNIDO, IOM, ILO, WHO, UNEP, UNFPA , UNAIDS, UNESCO, IFAD, World Bank, IMF and IFC. Which country are you originally from and how could you describe it? Ethiopia. Although frankly speaking, I feel as if I am a citizen of Kenya; since I worked there for many years and since I have strong ties with the people and the country. However, I am proudly Ethiopian and hold a deep love and appreciation for the country’s diverse landscape and rich historical, cultural and religious heritage. I love to share the coffee ceremony, cuisine, on special occasions with those around me wherever I am in the world and take much pride as I wear my traditional garments. I carry the spirit and resilience of my fellow country men and women in my life journey. The experience of growing up during one of the darkest periods of Ethiopian history, “the red terror”, has propelled my interest in the promotion of human development, caring for humanity and the planet; anchored on the principles of economic, social and political rights for all. If someone visiting from your country, only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend them and why? I love the city of Durban. Aside from the environmental beauty of the city, I find it to be a microcosm of South Africa. It’s a cultural melting pot of a number of communities, where cultures, languages, music, art and food amalgamate to showcase the city’s diverse heritage. The city is a real treat for the senses. If you share a love for spices, like I do, then I would ensure a trip to the local spice markets is on the list. During the celebration of Women’s month, last August, you were part of a webinar hosted by Embassy Direct, together with other ladies, also members of the diplomatic corps. How was that experience for you? I always enjoy engaging with my sisters in the diplomatic corps. I consider the diplomatic community here in South Africa as friends. Beyond friendship, they represent Member States of the UN and have a stake in the well-functioning of the UN system. The UN system benefits from the constant and consistent engagement with our partners for knowledge building and sharing in order to meet the global sustainable development goals (SDGs) and ensure that no one is left behind. Achieving gender equality and eradicating

GBV is an important part of this journey. This session provided the intellectual platform for exchange of information and was incredibly insightful as I listened carefully the life experiences of the diplomatic community’s women leaders in their personal and their governments’ endeavours towards gender equality. Such events broaden knowledge, encourage partnerships and collaboration among countries. Do you believe that Africa has evolved around issues like famine, disease prevention, armed conflicts and Human Rights, amongst others, since the creation of the United Nations? Some people might argue that Africa has not evolved but I strongly feel that Africans have evolved. I also recognize the existence of continued tension between citizens’ potential, resilience and perseverance to thrive, and Africa’s social political and economic systems which confine and limit them from applying their potential. One of the greatest changes since the creation of the UN in 1945 is that the continent is largely free from visible colonial rule. We have not seen widespread war and famine in the continent. Africa has witnessed significant growth over the last two decades and has registered some significant progress. Africans have thrived when and where the intellectual space and adequate facilities are provided. Other countries with such capacities have unfortunately benefitted from the ingenuity and intelligence of Africans to the detriment of their own countries. With the onset of the Covid-19, some analysts forecast a devastating outcome for sub-Saharan Africa. In current comparison to the other countries, this is not the case. However, the pandemic has laid bare the work that still needs to be done everywhere in the world but particularly in African countries. It has also amplified the need to strengthen the peace and development nexus. We need to reform the obsolete systems and development models; we need to forge a new economic order by Africans for Africa. We need to adopt a system which works for the people; from strengthening the public health care systems, to improving education infrastructure, to ensuring social protection for the most vulnerable. In the immediate we need to provide PPEs, facilitate access to water, provide food to the hungry, grants to the unemployed, provide nutritious meals to school children, and cater to pregnant and lactating women, and continue with all other essential services to citizens in need. The economic recovery starts today in terms of building resilience to withstand future and inevitable shocks. As a neutral development broker, the UN will always stand with countries in need. 2020 was a challenging year for the world. Are you able to share a positive message with Embassy Direct’s readers? 2020 has taught us that no man is an island and we are stronger when we work together. The crisis has forced us to implement a whole-of-society approach. During most of my advocacy work in 2020, I have emphasised the quote from former statesman Edmund Burke “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” We all have it in us to do something for the greater good. This moment is a test to our collective solidarity and the commitment to each-and-every life on this planet to co-exist with dignity, peacefully and respectfully ensuring that we leave no-one behind. Stand up for humanity, stand up for human rights and stand up to defeat the current and future challenges. My own personal mantra in this regard has been Inaction and Silence begets violence – Not in my Name.

ow long have you been the head of Mission of your country, to South Africa? I’ve been lucky enough to be here since April 2017.

Are you representing your Mission at any other SADC countries as well? When I arrived, I was also High Commissioner to Lesotho and Eswatini. But happily, since then, we have reopened our missions and posted full time, resident, High Commissioners to both countries. Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and if not where else have you served as such? I was previously British Ambassador to Bosnia & Herzegovina. Before that I was posted to Johannesburg during the transition to democracy in the mid-1990s, to Washington DC, Moscow, and to New Delhi, in between assignments at headquarters in London. What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? In normal times, the joy of working on the UK-South Africa relationship is its extraordinary breadth and depth. Over my time here, we’ve negotiated and brought into force a new bilateral trade agreement with SACU & Mozambique. And of course, the last year has been dominated by the urgent need to address the impacts of Covid19, particularly on the thick human ties between our two countries. The strength of links between our science and research institutions has also really come to the fore in understanding this virus and developing ways to tackle it. Can you mention any of your country’s multinationals that operate in South Africa? We count around 600 British and UK-based multinational companies active in South Africa. Among the biggest investors and employers here are the likes of G4S, Diageo, Vodafone, Jaguar Land Rover, British Airways, Virgin, Unilever, Associated British Foods, HSBC, Standard Chartered, as well as a host of UK auditors, accountants, legal, and other professional services firms. What South African brands and companies have a presence in your country? South African companies have over the last couple of decades built a strong presence in the UK, both as an investment destination in its own right, and to access international capital for expansion. This ranges from household names like Discovery, Nando’s, AngloAmerican, and Investec, to a range of other companies who have bought into the UK property, retail, and hospitality sectors. If someone visiting from your country, only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend them and why? You’re really spoilt for choice. If in Gauteng, go see the Apartheid Museum: you can’t understand South Africa today if you don’t know its traumatic recent history. If in Cape Town, don’t miss Cape Point: it offers great natural drama, and has a special quality, at the confluence of oceans and the end of Africa (I know geographers will correct me!). In 2021, Georgia marks 30th Anniversary of the restoration of independence. Georgia’s statehood, in a form of a Kingdom, dates back to millennia, however it was only on 26 May 1918, when the first Democratic Republic of Georgia was born. It brought to all Georgian citizens equality of rights and freedoms, still rare commodity globally in those times. First Georgian Republic and its promising prospects for Georgian nation lasted only three years. In 1921 the liberty was crushed by Soviet invasion, however, on 9 April 1991 Georgia managed to restore its independence and democratic republic, following the demise of the Soviet Union.

30 years on, despite traditionally challenging geopolitical environment and continued threats to its sovereignty and territorial integrity from revisionist former colonial power, Georgia as a historical guardian of the easternmost frontier of Europe and its values, managed to persevere, consolidate democracy and move forward. We progress steadily on the path of European and Euro-Atlantic integration and position ourselves as important energy, trade and transport hub at geopolitical crossroads, already hosting major oil and gas pipelines as well as railway route linking East and West. Georgia stands out regionally and globally in comprehensive and continued reforms, ease of doing business, media freedom, democratic credentials and anti-corruption drive. Dramatic improvement of state services has also proved exemplary and been recognized widely as a blueprint of possible structural state reforms for any willing nation. Independent and democratic Georgia has seized historical opportunity of forging ties, also throughout African continent, with the entire area of Southern African Development Community (SADC) including South Africa. Georgian Embassy in Pretoria is focused on active and well-calibrate engagement with South African and Georgian business communities to promote bilateral trade and investment that would be of added-value for the economies of both countries. Tourism has emerged naturally as important sector of mutual interest and key facilitator of people-to-people contacts. We also share soft spot for rugby hence we have recently seen promising institutionalization of rugby ties. Georgia, being the birthplace of wine and having 8,000 years of proven uninterrupted tradition of wine-making has been keen to exchange its wine traditions and skills with South Africa. Georgia-South Africa Winemaker Exchange Programme initiated and managed by Southern Africa Georgia Chamber of Commerce (SAGCC – www.sagcc.biz ) and its Chairman Mr. Marius Heyns, in collaboration with Georgian National Wine Agency and select wineries of the both Countries, has proved exceptionally successful. What are the main areas of interest between your country and South Africa? Currently, at bilateral level we are working on opening business opportunities for Colombians and South Africans. Also we just signed a MoU between the Colombian and South African affiliate centres for the Fourth Industrial Revolution of the World Economic Forum. Furthermore, we are working on other areas: science and technology, environment, natural parks management, diplomatic academies, risks mitigation and mining.

South Africa is definitely one leading economy that has been attractive and with it, some Colombian companies have chosen South Africa as their operational and production hub for the continent. Several are candy makers like Aldor and Americandy. With the second largest Gross Domestic Product of the continent, South Africa is currently one of the largest recipients of Colombian investments whose final purpose is the assembly of a production plant. In December of last year, Grupo Nutresa became part of this list, with the announcement of its first investment in South Africa, this Colombian multinational of food holding has more than 100 years of existence, count with a 3.1 USD billion turnover, 48 manufacturing facilities, 45.000 employees, is present in 75 countries and is ranked as the most sustainable food company by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. They will be soon opening an office where products such as cookies, chocolates and sweets will be commercialized and produced in the future. This, for sure, will bring more opportunities for the economic recovery of the country due to the pandemic as It is expected that this multinational will generate direct and indirect jobs through a steady growth for South Africans. What South African brands and companies have a presence in your country? This year, Colombia would have growth higher than the world average and that of the Latin American and Caribbean region, according to the "Global Economic Prospectives" report, published in the first week of January by the World Bank. According to the document, the world economy would have fallen 4.3 percent last year, in the worst global recession since World War II, due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. In Colombia, the global outlook report says, growth is projected to reach 4.9 percent in 2021, underpinned by strong domestic demand. The energy sector is expected to benefit from increases in oil prices. Growth is projected to hold at 4.3 percent in 2022. Thanks to this macroeconomic stability even though during the current crisis, makes Colombia a safe and interesting destination for South African companies which have a strong presence in different sectors such as mining, oil and gas, agro processing (avocados in particular), hospitality, new technologies, among others. Some of these companies and brands are: AngloGold Ashanti, Westfalia and previously SAB Miller. How has been the progress and commitment of the Government of Colombia in the promotion and protection of human rights? Under the current government of President Iván Duque, the State scheme for the protection of the population in the process of reincorporation - ex-combatants of the FARC, their families and members of the new political party - has been consolidated. The National Government, since the beginning of its mandate,

established as one of its priorities to address the aggressions of which human rights defenders are victims. Colombia is currently under a reconciliation process as was the experience of South Africa, and as brother countries we look up to the South African experience of resilience and perseverance. The Government of my country is grateful for all the support of the UN and all States in this struggle as we adopt the concept of Ubuntu, considering it a pillar to continue to implement the Peace Agreement in the country to achieve unity and prosperity of all Colombians. I look to the success of SA as a symbol of hope for a better future in my own country and for the people in Palestine. Are you representing Palestine before any other SADC countries as well? I am currently non-resident ambassador of the State of Palestine to the Republic of Namibia, the Kingdom of Lesotho and the Republic of Malawi. I presented my letter of credence to H.E. President Hage Geingob in Namibia on 27 November 2020, and will visit Lesotho to present my credentials as soon as the Covid-19 lockdown has been lifted. I am excited to be working with our SADC partners to strengthen bilateral relations between Palestine and these countries, and to open new horizons in the areas of trade, tourism and investment.

Is this your first posting as Head of Mission and if not where else have you served as such? Yes, this is my first posting as a Head of Mission, and it is also the first time that I have been to the African continent. Previously, I was the Minister Assistant for the Americas and the Caribbean Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Ramallah, Palestine. Much of my work focused on Latin American countries, with which Palestinians also share a common history of struggle against colonization. What are the main areas of interest between Palestine and South Africa? We share so many common areas of interest: a history of struggle against colonization; rich cultural and religious diversity; a wealth of natural resources and beauty. Both Palestine and South Africa also have amazing human potential and we both need to harness this to strengthen our economies. Can you mention any of the Palestinian companies that operate in South Africa? Currently, there are a handful of small companies operating in South Africa. However, we are looking forward to carving an easier path for Palestinian companies to come and do business here. One of the issues we are working on now is to exempt Palestinians from visa requirements when visiting South Africa. Visa-free travel will ease movement between Palestine and South Africa and encourage Palestinians to come to South Africa to work and study.

What South African brands and companies have a presence in Palestine? There are very few South African brands available on the Palestinian market. However, this is not by choice. This is due to Israel’s restrictions on and control of Palestine’s borders and economy. As Palestine is militarily occupied by Israel, we have virtually no control over our own economy and imports/exports. As soon as Israel ends its occupation of Palestine, we look forward to expanding trade with South Africa – and, indeed, the rest of the world. If someone visiting from Palestine only had time to see one South African destination, which one would you recommend to them and why? Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. It tells the fascinating story of South Africa’s history of injustice and the long, painful - but inspirational - journey to freedom. The road to South Africa’s freedom comes alive through the many tours and exhibitions on offer. For Palestinians, it will be a reminder that South Africa’s past is our present, and we should never stop fighting for our dignity and liberation. Yes, there is an active Palestinian Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, and the Embassy is working with our South African counterparts at establishing stronger trade relations. Ending the Israeli occupation of Palestine remains the top priority and the most important way to strengthen Palestine’s economy. Our South African partners in government and civil society are also working hard on this. Do South African passport holders require a visa to visit your country and if that is the case how can they proceed to apply for one? South Africans do not require a visa to enter Palestine. However, all access points and Palestinian borders are controlled by the Israeli military, and all visitors to Palestine will have to pass through Israeli military checkpoints and be subject to questioning and checks by the Israeli military. Entry into Palestine is, therefore, controlled by Israel. This is an unfortunate consequence of Israel’s occupation of Palestine. 2020 was a challenging year for the world. Are you able to share a positive message with Embassy Direct’s readers? Despite this tough and challenging year for me personally and professionally, I feel honoured and privileged to be in such an inspiring country - a land characterised by the isiZulu expression “Umuntu Ngumuntu ngabantu.” It means “a person is a person through other people.” I believe that hard lockdowns, restrictions and the pandemic have taught us that a common humanity, international solidarity and unity are needed more than ever.

Stellenbosch invites locals and visitors to stay and play in the warm heart of the Winelands

The latest campaign, launched over the Festive Season, follows last year’s highly successful Restaurant Rewards campaign which gave patrons an excuse to leave the house for a delicious meal after many months of living la vida lockdown.

For a town whose economy is largely dependent on tourism and wine, COVID restrictions not-withstanding, Stellenbosch hasn’t gone into hibernation, choosing instead to share its playful side and generous spirit with locals and guests.

Tiger-prawn tempura at Genki, tapas and bubbly at the Lanzerac, Steak Bordelaise at The Fat Butcher – patrons could take their pick of one, two or more divine dining experiences in this innovative Restaurant Rewards programme which had the dual effect of putting Stellenbucks back in their pocket for supporting their favourite restaurants, while reigniting the Stellenbosch economy, saving jobs and keeping the town’s eateries alive.

The latest in a series of Support Stellenbosch initiatives is a tempting array of Stay and Play packaged accommodation and experiences with all the trimmings so that all guests have to do is take their pick, pack their bags and get to Stellenbosch for a soul-filled getaway, explains Jeanneret Momberg, CEO Visit Stellenbosch, the town’s official Destination Marketing Organisation (DMO). When one considers that Stellenbosch is where Cape Town comes to play, these combined packages, aimed at the specific interests of local travellers – Food & Wine, Romance, Wellness, Outdoors, Family and Luxury – take the guesswork out of putting together a getaway by curating experiences that Stellenbosch locals love into one easyto-book package. These include, among others, fabulous foodie weekend getaways and overnight stays in the historic centre paired with a bike tour.

So ingenious was the Support Stellenbosch initiative, it has been eyed by other destinations around South Africa to revive their tourism economies. But it started here with the spark of an idea, the backing of a community and lots of hard work, says Momberg.

“This was a town effort which simply would not have been possible if we did not have the networks and relationships we have with stakeholders and the community. Stellenbosch University came forth with funding and amazing support. The Stellenbosch Municipality was remarkable in supporting us and communicating our message to our local residents. Then we had the Cape Winelands District municipality. Homegrown corporates came on board. Finally, the residents. The amount of positive energy that the campaign created amongst the town’s residents was remarkable.” Those networks and relationships helped raise the R1.8 million seed funding required to kickstart this innovative programme to breathe life into the town’s beleaguered restaurant community which would not have been able to fund the programme itself, says Daniël Kriel, co-owner of De Warenmarkt. Beyond the extra support restaurant owners like Daniël experienced as a result of the campaign and the consequent energy that the town witnessed with the presence of patrons on its pretty oak-lined pavements, was the astounding goodwill of locals and visitors that Support Stellenbosch attracted.

What is Support Stellenbosch? Support Stellenbosch was created to inspire residents to support local business, experience Stellenbosch as tourists, and inspire their networks to discover what Stellenbosch has to offer so that collectively, they could stimulate the town’s economy and pave the way for its swift recovery. “The Restaurant Rewards was just one component of the campaign, but essentially how it worked was that patrons received a voucher to the value of 50% of what they spent (for transactions of R200 or more),

redeemable through SnapScan at any participating restaurant within the campaign period (capped at a maximum of R400). “They could dine out as many times as they wished to earn and burn Stellenbucks, which is what the reward cash was called. The bill was paid through SnapScan and the restaurants received their money immediately. Over and above the Restaurant Rewards were special travel packages and accommodation and experience discounts which are still in place in 2021,” explains Momberg.

What the campaign also did was to nudge tourism and hospitality establishments that may not have yet been ‘travel ready’ to become so, making the town of Stellenbosch a safe haven for travellers who are concerned about their safety in a time of COVID-19.

While we know 2021 will be another challenging year, we have a great excuse to share our town with locals and guests as we celebrate 50 years of sharing Stellenbosch with the world and the 50th anniversary of Stellenbosch Wine Routes, which officially opened in April 1971.

“It’s very logical that we cannot invite people to Stellenbosch unless we can assure that we are a safe and responsible destinations so the linkage between the two is very close,” adds Momberg. The stars of the Support Stellenbosch show, she says, are the locals of Stellenbosch. In an incredible show of solidarity, the locals got behind their tourism sector and returned to restaurants in numbers.

In times of COVID and beyond, Stellenbosch is a caring community which looks after each other. And when our guests and visitors are ready and able to visit us again, we will be ready to deliver our characteristic hospitality. There’s nothing we like more than sharing the warm heart of Stellenbosch.

POETRY AND WRITING COMPETITION ANNOUNCED

in difficult times

In honour of Heritage Day in 2020, Samara Private Game Reserve hosted a poetry and story competition for Graaff-Reinet and surrounds themed “hope in difficult times”. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown had a deleterious impact on many rural Karoo communities. The aim of the competition was to inspire hope and ease hunger by offering food vouchers as prizes. The Samara team also set up a number of stew kitchens to feed 1,560 community members as part of the Heritage Day campaign. Dozens of heartfelt and moving entries were received, in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. Most were written submissions, although one entrant submitted a series of spoken word entries with video. The task of judging fell to Banks Gwaxula, Founder of Ubuntu Pathways in Port Elizabeth, and Lin Gubb, former English teacher at Kingswood College. The winners of the competition, across 3 age categories, were announced at a prizegiving ceremony hosted at the Alexander Laing Hall in Kroonvale on 4th November 2020. The event was attended by community members, Banks Gwaxula, staff from Samara Private Game Reserve and Saki Sogcwe, a talented poet who works at Ubuntu Pathways and runs a poetry group in Port Elizabeth. The Spar Camdeboo generously sponsored food vouchers worth R10,000 with each of the category winners receiving R1,000 worth and the balance being shared between the runners up and other entrants who put heart and effort into the competition. In addition, through the generosity of the Kolisi Foundation, founded by Springbok Siya Kolisi and his fitness entrepreneur wife Rachel, working with Ubuntu Pathways, all participants received a food hamper worth R2,000. All in all the prizes totalled R82,000. The winners were: Aviwe Qoza and Sylandré Sparrius in the 17 and over category, Whaldene Reed in the 1216 year category and Bareon Jafta in the under 12 category. “We received some really wonderful entries from some talented local writers, especially Aviwe Qoza who used video and imagery to accompany his entry. He had the judges in tears, we were so moved by his work,” says Kim Budge, one of the organisers of the competition from Samara. “We were really pleased with the outcome of this competition and hope to expand it to Port Elizabeth and perhaps even further, in the years to come. It is so rewarding to see such talent – it is our hope that these aspiring writers can be nurtured by exploring collaborations with writing and poetry groups in the surrounding areas,” concludes Budge.

CONSERVATION PARTICIPATION EXPERIENCES

Tintswalo Lapalala Launches

Tintswalo Lapalala has launched two conservation participation experiences that offer guests the unique opportunity to join the Lapalala conservation team in rhino and elephant research and monitoring activities in the Lapalala Wilderness Reserve in the Waterberg (Limpopo Province). Lapalala Wilderness Nature Reserve is committed to ensuring the survival of Africa’s rhinos and in doing so, applies best practice research, management and monitoring of these magnificent animals. As part of these management programmes, the reserve conservation and veterinary teams are in the process of implementing various monitoring methods which include, ear-notching, DNA sampling, as well as the inserting of microchips on each animal. Guests are invited to participate in one of these Rhino Experiences that will take place on four specific dates throughout 2021 (May 7-9; June 18-20; July 16-18; August 20-22). The veterinary team will dart and immobilize a white or black rhino and participants may assist with monitoring the animal during the capture. The DNA collection forms part of the Rhino DNA Indexing System (RhODIS), which is a forensic tool that stores a unique genetic fingerprint for every rhino that has been sampled using blood, tissue and horn. It also plays an important part in Lapalala’s rhino security initiative and its fight against poaching as DNA data may be used as evidence in court. The Lapalala Wilderness Reserve is located within the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve, an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the past 40 years the reserve has become a beacon for wildlife research and conservation in South Africa. Recognised as one of the largest and most scenic private reserves in southern Africa, its abundance of flora plays home to a vast array of wildlife that is protected within its 48 500 hectares. This includes 300 bird species, 50 fish species, 147 mammal species, 114 reptile species, 33 amphibian species and various breeding projects. Eco-friendly Tintswalo Lapalala is operated off the grid to accommodate only 16 adults and four children, and as one of only two lodges within the reserve, it guarantees a rare, and personalised wilderness experience. Guests may also have the rare opportunity to get up close and personal with the giants of the bush during an Elephant Collaring operation. The 27 elephants within the reserve are carefully monitored as part of the sustainable management of the population. From time to time, as an elephant collar needs to be replaced, a small group of guests have the chance to join this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Guided by an experienced ranger, the group is driven in an open 4x4 safari to meet up with the helicopter used to locate and dart the elephant. Guests may assist the veterinary team in monitoring the elephant’s vital signs, such as breathing rate and temperature. DNA samples are collected while the elephant’s collar is replaced, before the tranquiliser wears off and the elephant is free to join its herd again. Based on the minimum requirement of eight participants, the cost of the Conservation Experiences is R16 000 for two people, to be added to the accommodation costs of a minimum stay of 3 nights. Chinese New Year, or the Spring Festival, is the most important celebration observed in Asian, with cultural and historic significance. The festival signals the beginning of spring, and the start of a new year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Lunar New Year was this Friday, February 12, and that means 15 days of celebrating the Year of Metal Ox. The metal element represents anything sparkly from jewelry to the needle of a syringe. So we can see a bigger emphasis on industries related to metal in 2021. The Ox, in Chinese culture, is a hardworking zodiac sign. It usually signifies movements so, hopefully, the world will be less static than last year and get moving again in the second half of the year. Last year was a very tough year for many of us. Towards the end of last year, I lost a childhood friend of mine who was smart and healthy. At the beginning of this year, I lost another good friend. He was healthy and a gentle soul, and we climbed Kilimanjaro together. That was a wakeup call for me. It's important to connect and reconnect with people who are special to us. During this very difficult, seeing a lot of people are suffering out there, I humbly started Impilo Collection Foundation. With our first food drive, we successfully collected 10 tons of food and bags of clothes. We equally distributed to the shelter of Gender Based Violence in Katlehong, Tembisa Child and Family Welfare Society and Hong Ning Chinese Aged Home. Chinese New Year is a very special time, it’s time to regroup, reflect, reconcile and giving with gratitude. I often think Chinese New Year is a good time do our new year resolution, also a good reason for us to celebrate, because the more we celebrate the more reasons for us to celebrate.
