Da un catalogo Rolex per l’Italia leggiamo quelle che sono le caratteristiche principali del primo GMT-MASTER fornito alla compagnia aerea Pan Am: “Cronometro novità, uno degli strumenti più perfezionati acquistabili oggi sul mercato mondiale, nel campo della produzione degli orologi. Il GMTMaster indica l'ora esatta in due punti del globo. Impermeabile, automatico, calendario vi ricorda un appuntamento e vi serve da cronografo. Offre garanzie evidenti, come il suo "bollettino ufficiale di marcia", la cassa Oyster impermeabile, la carica automatica "Perpetual" e il calendario automatico "Datejust". La data é ingrandita dall'ingegnosa lente "Ciclope". Inoltre il GMT-Master é munito di un bordo girevole e di una lancetta rossa che compie il giro del quadrante in 24 ore. Scappamento antimagnetico. We can learn about the main characteristics of the first GMT-MASTER, supplied for the Pan Am aircraft company, from an Italian Rolex catalogue: “New chronometer, one of the most precise instruments in the field of watch production in the global market today. The GMT-Master gives the exact time in two different time zones. Waterproof, automatic, appointment reminder calendar and chronograph. It offers obvious guarantees, such as its “Official Certificate”, the waterproof Oyster case, the selfwinding system “Perpetual” and the automatic calendar “Datejust”. The date is enlarged by an ingenious “Cyclops” lens. The GMT-Master also has a revolving rim and a red 24 hour hand. Antimagnetic escapement. The GMT-Master was developed following an idea expressed by pilots belonging to a world famous navigation company. Eighty per cent of those asked declared to prefer the GMT-Master to any other watch and twenty of the twenty one captains said that the 24 hour revolving rim, was a significant help for piloting”. It is necessary to add that it has a 38 mm diameter, an outer minute track, the graphics could be gold, white or silver and it had the classic Mercedes hands.

Alla fiera di Basilea del 2007 Rolex ci propone una nuova versione del GMT-MASTER II in acciaio: la cassa, é stata rimodellata, é stata utilizzata una corona con tripla guarnizione, l’ormai famosa Triplock, la lunetta girevole 24 ore é stata ricoperta da un disco in ceramica nera con numeri incisi. Il quadrante con indici maggiorati rispetto ai modelli precedenti, é nero e la scritta GMT-MASTER II è verde come l’astina della lancetta 24 ore. Sul vetro zaffiro si trova un’incisione che rappresenta la coroncina Rolex, situata esattamente alle ore 6, vicino al bordo esterno. Questa incisione, quasi invisibile a occhio nudo, può essere osservata con una lente d’ingrandimento su sfondo scuro. Nel caso che il vetro zaffiro originale venga sostituito, sul vetro di ricambio comparirà una lettera “s” incisa all’interno della corona Rolex. La Rolex in questo modello incide, come aveva già fatto per il GMT-MASTER II, referenza 116713 e 116718, il bordo interno della “carrure” con la scritta ROLEX ripetuta più volte e in riferimento delle ore 6 il numero di serie dell’orologio. Monta un bracciale Oyster in acciaio, ref. 78200, dotato di un nuovo fermaglio con maglia supplementare per l’allungamento e chiusura di sicurezza.
At the Baselworld 2007, Rolex presented a new version of the GMT-MASTER II, where the case has been re-modelled, a crown with triple sealing device has been used, the famous Triplock, the 24 hour rotating bezel is covered by a black ceramic disc with engraved numerals. The dial with larger indexes than earlier models, is black and the wording GMT-MASTER II is green just as the arm of the 24 hour hand. The sapphire crystal has been engraved with a representation of the Rolex crown, situated exactly at 6 o’clock, close to the external edge. This engraving, almost invisible to the naked eye, can be seen using a magnifying lens on a dark background. In the case that the original crystal is substituted, the letter “s” will appear engraved inside the Rolex crown of the substitute crystal. In this model, as already done for the GMT-MASTER II, reference 116713 and 116718, Rolex has repeatedly engraved the internal edge of the “carrure” with the word ROLEX and at 6 o’clock, the serial number of the watch. It is fitted with an Oyster bracelet reference 78200, equipped with a new clasp with additional extension link and a safety lock.

Il GMT-MASTER é stato creato per i piloti, gli ufficiali di rotta ed era il cronometro ufficiale della Pan American World Airways. Sull’esterno del fondello, di questo particolare esemplare fotografato, ne troviamo il logo e forse il numero di dotazione. Questo orologio é molto particolare anche per il quadrante bianco con una grafica nera e perché manca del trattino tra OYSTER e PERPETUAL.

The GMT-MASTER was created for pilots, chief navigators and was the official chronometer for Pan American World Airways. On the outside of the case back, of this particular model in the photograph, we can find the logo and perhaps the serial number. This watch is also very particular for its white dial with black graphics and also because the hyphen between OYSTER and PERPETUAL is missing.

Un particolare e insolito, forse unico, modello di ref. 6542/8 con ghiera monocolore marrone chiaro e quadrante definito “Yellow”. Questo GMT-MASTER é reso ancora più raro dalla grafica bianca, normalmente infatti, su questa referenza la grafica era oro, e dalla personalizzazione per SERPICO Y LAINO di colore giallo. La ref. 6542/8 poteva montare i calibri 1036 GMT, 1065 GMT o ancora 1066 GMT. L’esemplare qui fotografato monta il calibro 1065 GMT, un derivato dal calibro 1030 che porta inciso sul ponte del meccanismo automatico 1065, come si può vedere dall’ingrandimento fotografico. Questo GMT-MASTER é accompagnato da uno stupendo bracciale estensibile in oro giallo 18 ct.

A particular and unusual, perhaps unique, model of ref. 6542/8 with a single colour light brown bezel and a dial defined as “Yellow”. This GMT-MASTER is made even rarer by the white graphics, which were normally gold on this reference, and by the yellow colour SERPICO Y LAINO personalization. The ref. 6542/8 could have been equipped with 1036 GMT, 1065 GMT or 1066 GMT caliber. The example in the photograph has a 1065 GMT, which is based on the 1030 caliber and has 1065 engraved on the bridge for the selfwinding mechanism which can be seen in the enlarged photograph. This GMT-MASTER is accompanied by a stupendous 18 ct. gold extensible bracelet.

Anche questa referenza, come la 6542, é stata utilizzata come cronometro ufficiale della Pan American Airways. Possiamo leggere sul quadrante, in riferimento delle ore 6, ancora la scritta SWISS, anche se, come veniva segnalato in una pubblicità dell’epoca pubblicata a pagina 118, “munito di quadrante luminoso senza radiazioni”. Infatti negli anni ‘60 compare sul quadrante la scritta SWISS-T<25 anche se già dalla ref. 6542 la Rolex aveva sostituito al radium il tritio (privo di radioattività). L’esemplare fotografato, con un quadrante virato al marrone scuro, è corredato sia della lunetta originale rossa e blu, sia di quella con l’inserto marrone (di probabile derivazione dal modello in acciaio e oro).

This reference just like the 6542, was also used as an official chronometer by the Pan American Airways. We can still read the word SWISS at 6 o’clock on the dial even if it was, as described in an advertisement at that time on page 118, “equipped with non-radioactive luminous dial” . In fact it was only in the 60’s when the words SWISS-T<25 appeared, even if from ref. 6542 Rolex had already substituted radium with tritium (nonradioactive). The example in the photograph, with a dial turned dark brown, is equipped both with the original red and blue bezel and with the one with the brown insert (probably based on the model in stainless steel and gold).

Ancora un GMT-MASTER con ref. 1675 dove si può ammirare un quadrante, che potrebbe essere, considerando l’anno di produzione, un prototipo. In riferimento delle ore 6, ancora la scritta SWISS, anche se, come veniva segnalato in una pubblicità dell’epoca pubblicata a pagina 110, “munito di quadrante luminoso senza radiazioni”. Infatti solo nella seconda metà degli anni ‘60 compare sul quadrante la scritta SWISS-T<25. Si può osservare sul quadrante sotto la scritta OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED un segmento bianco che viene definito dai collezionisti “under-line”. E ancora altre particolarità: la pista dei minuti non collegata con i raggi più lunghi rispetto a quelli che seguiranno, manca il trattino tra la parola OYSTER e PERPETUAL e gli indici sono più grandi e in posizione più centrale rispetto ai quadranti standard dell’epoca. Ai lati della corona di carica si vedono le spallette di protezione; questa é la versione più rara, quella che viene definita dai collezionisti con il nome di “cornino”.

Again a GMT-MASTER with ref. 1675, where it is possible to admire a dial, which considering the year of production, could be a prototype. Once again the word SWISS at 6 o’clock, even if it was, as highlighted by an advert at the time published on page 110 “equipped with non-radioactive luminous dial”. In fact it was only in the late 60s when the words SWISS-T<25 appeared on the dial. A white segment defined by collectors as “under-line” can be seen on the dial under the words OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED. And other characteristics: the outer minute divisions with longer bars than later models, the lack of hyphen between the word OYSTER and PERPETUAL and the indexes are larger and in a central position with respect to standard dials of that period. The crown guards are visible on either side of the winding crown; this is the rarer of the two versions, that which is usually called “cornino” by collectors.

Particolare la grafica di questo GMT-MASTER che presenta sotto la scritta OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED un segmento bianco: l’underline, un elemento grafico presente in alcune tipologie di quadranti nei primi anni ‘60. Numerose e differenti le spiegazioni sull’underline: c’è chi dice che rappresentasse la firma di un produttore di quadranti, chi dice che servisse per una giusta centratura, chi semplicemente che si trattasse di una scelta grafica. Ultima e forse la più accreditata identifica la presenza sul quadrante di materiale non radioattivo. L’esemplare fotografato È accompagnato da un bracciale “Flushfit” in acciaio con ref. 7206.

The graphics of this GMT-MASTER are particular, as under the words OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED there is a white segment present: the underline, a graphics element which existed in some types of dial in early 60’s. Explanations about the underline are numerous and different: some say it represented the signature of a dial manufacturer, others say it was for correct print centering and others asserted it was an aesthetic choice. According to the latest theory, and perhaps the most reliable, the underline identifies the presence of non-radioactive material on the dial. The photographed example is accompanied by a stainless steel “Flushfit” bracelet with ref. 7206.

L’esemplare fotografato, sopra la scritta GMT-MASTER, porta la personalizzazione di colore bianco SERPICO Y LAINO che lo rende più interessante e sicuramente più raro. Sotto la scritta GMT-MASTER: SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED che attesta che il movimento ha superato con successo gli esami dell’Ufficio Svizzero di Controllo Cronometri. Un bracciale Jubilé in acciaio accompagna questo orologio.

The photographed example has the white personalization SERPICO Y LAINO above the word GMT-MASTER, which makes it more interesting and certainly rarer. Below the wording GMT-MASTER: SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED which authenticates that it has successfully passed the examination of the Swiss Office of Chronometer Control. A stainless steel Jubilé bracelet accompanies this watch.

Come possiamo leggere nella pubblicità, il GMT-MASTER é stato adottato anche dai membri delle Forze Armate. Questo raro GMTMASTER fotografato é personalizzato dalla scritta FUERZA AEREA DEL PERÙ incisa sull’esterno del fondello. Come consuetudine per gli orologi militari il numero di matricola è riportato, in parte o per intero, all’interno del fondello (576). Viene comunemente definito, nel gergo collezionistico, F.A.P. Il quadrante di questo particolare e raro orologio ha subito nel tempo una variazione cromatica assumendo una calda tonalità marrone. Il calibro utilizzato in questo esemplare é un 1575 GMT, un derivato dal calibro 1530.

As we can read in the advert, the GMT-MASTER was also used by members of the Armed Forces. This rare GMT-MASTER in the photograph is personalized with the words FUERZA AEREA DEL PERÙ engraved on the outside of the case back. As a rule, the military watches had the issue number partially or completely indicated inside the case back (576). It is commonly defined in collector’s jargon as F.A.P. The dial of this unique and rare timepiece has sustained a chromatic variation over time, taking on a warm shade of brown. The caliber used in this example is a 1575 GMT, based on the 1530 caliber.

Un particolare e insolito, forse un prototipo, modello di ref. 1675/8 con ghiera monocolore in oro giallo. In un’asta di Sotheby’s, a Hong Kong, del 6 Maggio del 2002 (SPORTING TIME: AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF ROLEX WRISTWATCHES) è stato battuto un GMTMASTER (lotto n° 308) con la ghiera in oro e gli indici delle 24 ore incisi, proprio come il modello fotografato in queste pagine.

An unusual and particular model, perhaps a prototype, of the ref. 1675/8 with a single colour bezel in yellow gold. At a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong, on May 6 2002 (SPORTING TIME: AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION OF ROLEX WRISTWATCHES), a GMT-MASTER (lot n° 308), just like the model pictured in these pages, with gold bezel and 24 hour indexes engraved, went under the hammer.

Ancora un GMT-MASTER, ref. 16758, che si differenzia dall’orologio precedente, oltre che per il colore della lunetta e del quadrante, anche per la scritta DATE vicino alle parole OYSTER PERPETUAL. L’esemplare fotografato, accompagnato dal certificato originale Rolex, é equipaggiato di un bracciale Oyster in oro 18 ct. con ref. 7206. Dall’immagine ingrandita del retro del bracciale vediamo la referenza incisa sotto la scritta REGISTERED SWISS MADE e sulla destra del fermaglio: il punzone di garanzia svizzero (Elvezia grande), il punzone di garanzia internazionale per i metalli preziosi, il marchio con caratura e titolo in millesimi dell’oro e il marchio di fabbrica.

Yet another GMT-MASTER ref. 16758 which differs from the previous watch, not only for the colour of the dial and the bezel, but also for the wording DATE next to the words OYSTER PERPETUAL. The photographed example, accompanied with its original Rolex certificate, is equipped with an 18 ct. gold Oyster bracelet with ref. 7206. From the enlarged image of the back of the bracelet we can see the reference engraved under the wording REGISTERED SWISS MADE and to the right of the clasp: the Swiss guarantee hallmark (large Elvezia), the international precious metals guarantee hallmark, the carat and gold content in thousandths hallmark and the trademark.

Un GMT-MASTER II, ref. 16710, veramente particolare: è personalizzato per CHUCK YEAGER e per THE REAL McCOY’S. Charles Elwood “Chuck” Yeager è un aviatore statunitense della Seconda Guerra mondiale, primo uomo che superò il 14 ottobre 1947 il muro del suono. Volò, cioè, ad una velocità superiore a quella del suono (circa 1080 Km/h) ai comandi dell’aereo sperimentale Bell X-1, soprannominato “Glamorous Glennis” in onore della moglie. THE REAL McCOY’S rappresenta invece una catena di negozi giapponese. Corredato anche del documento della “THE REAL McCOY’S” attestante l’autenticità del prodotto, questo GMT-MASTER II é accompagnato da un bracciale Oyster con referenza 78790.

A really special GMT-MASTER II ref. 16710: it is personalized for CHUCK YEAGER and for THE REAL McCOY’S. Charles Elwood “Chuck” Yeager is an American aviator, a pilot in the second world war, the first man to exceed the sound barrier on 14 October 1947. In other words, he flew faster than the speed of sound (about 1080 Km/h) at the command of an experimental airplane Bell X-1, nicknamed “Glamorous Glennis” in honor of his wife. THE REAL McCOY’S represents a chain of Japanese shops. Equipped with the REAL McCOY’S document, which certifies the authenticity of the product, this GMT-MASTER II is accompanied by an Oyster bracelet with reference 78790.

A prima vista potrebbe sembrare semplicemente un GMT-MASTER II con ref. 16713, in realtà la vista di fianco ci permette di vedere che sono scomparsi i fori in corrispondenza del bracciale. Alla ref. 16713 é stata aggiunta la lettera “ T” che sta a significare: “trous borgnes” ovvero fori ciechi. Su alcune casse Oyster sono scomparsi questi fori e nella referenza é comparsa invece la lettera “T”, per esempio le ref. 16600T, 16610T, 16613T, 16618T, 16710T e 16718T. Solo tra le anse compare la nuova referenza, sul bollino applicato sul fondello e nella garanzia che accompagna l’orologio resta la vecchia ref. 16713. L’esemplare fotografato é munito di un bracciale Oysterlock in acciaio e oro giallo con ref. 78793. Nelle referenze dei bracciali formate da cinque cifre l’ultima ne specifica il tipo di metallo; in questo caso é 3 che sta a significare rolesor giallo (acciaio e oro giallo).

At a first glance, it could simply seem to be a GMT-MASTER II with ref. 16713, in reality the side view allows us to see that the holes corresponding to the bracelet have disappeared. The letter “T”, which means “trous borgnes”, or sunken holes, has been added to the ref. 16713. On some Oyster cases, these holes have disappeared and in the reference the letter “T” has appeared, for example the refs. 16600T, 16610T, 16613T; 16618T, 16710T and 16718T. The new reference only appears between the lugs, whilst the old ref. 16713 remains on the sticker applied to the case back and on the guarantee, which accompanies the watch. The photographed example is equipped with an Oysterlock bracelet in stainless steel and yellow gold with ref. 78793. In the five digit bracelet references, the last digit specifies the type of metal: in this case it is 3, which means yellow rolesor (stainless steel and yellow gold).
