Music

Music plays a vital and vibrant role in co-curricular life. Pupils of all levels of experience are encouraged to take part and try new opportunities.

Music is timetabled into the curriculum, with the school orchestra, choirs, chapel choir, jazz band, concert band, rock groups and a great variety of ensembles and groups playing on a more informal basis. The Music department performs a large choral work every year, with many Lower School pupils participating, in addition to a joint musical production with the Drama department in the spring term and a festive concert in the summer term. There is an annual house music competition where pupils throughout the school represent their house. Individual music lessons are available for all levels, from the complete beginner to those seeking university scholarships. The director of music will be happy to discuss options with you. Given the high take-up throughout the school, individual music lessons take place during the teaching day and so pupils have to miss subject lessons to attend them. Instrumental lessons are put on a rota at different times each week so that pupils do not keep missing the same subject. Pupils in the Upper Sixth are timetabled music lessons in a study period and those in Year 11 will be timetabled out of lessons. Pupils take responsibility for catching up on missed work.
