Welcome from the headmaster I would like to welcome you and your son/daughter to Emanuel. We were fortunate to have a strong field of applicants this year and it is testament to your child’s ability, potential and character that they will be joining us this September. I am sure that they will be a little anxious about the first day and I hope that the induction activities, including the pastoral evenings early in the autumn term, will help both you and your son/daughter to feel settled. You will receive separate letters about these events with all of the required details.

Emanuel prides itself on being a genuine community, underpinned by our Christian values.

We hope to foster positive relationships with all of our parents and there are a number of ways that you can get involved. The most established of these is through the Emanuel Parents’ Association, as well as through supporting your son/daughter in their various sporting, musical or dramatic opportunities. In addition to this, we host a variety of careers and mentoring initiatives and are always grateful for your expertise and involvement.

I hope that you will come to feel a close connection with everyone at the school, but the most important relationships for you and your child are going to be with the form tutor and head of year.

They will keep an eye on their progress, encourage them, champion them and communicate with you when needed. We see this role as the bedrock of our pastoral culture, allowing every girl and boy to feel recognised and supported.

Morning registration begins at 8.25am in the pupil’s form room Pupils are encouraged to be in their form rooms by 8.20am at the latest to ensure they are prepared for the school day..

Parents should send an email to absences@ emanuel.org.uk and the form tutor on the first day of a pupil’s absence in all cases by 9am.

Alternatively parents can call the school. Reception is staffed from 7.30am and an answering machine facility is available before this time if parents wish to leave a message.

Other attendance regulations Pupils may not leave the grounds during the school day without permission.

Pupils may be required to attend school outside regular hours, including Saturdays, half terms and holidays, for sport and sanctions.

Absences All schools in England and Wales are required by law to keep accurate records of attendance and to have written records to support any absence.

Only the school can authorise absences for the purposes of these records. If you wish to take your child out of school for any reason, please email your child’s form tutor well in advance, giving your reasons. If the reasons fit with the guidance from the Department of Education (e.g. medical, close family funeral, compassionate grounds etc.) their head of year is able to issue an ‘exeat’ in consultation with the head of section and deputy head: pastoral. However, please note that routine medical or dental appointments should be arranged out of school time and pupils cannot be excused from school for family holidays.

Daily reporting of absence is required until the pupil returns to school.

Late arrivals The main entrance gate will close at 8.23am each morning; students arriving after this time must register at the gatehouse late (students arriving after this time do not have sufficient time to make it to their form room by 8.25am). A record of all late arrivals is monitored by the form tutor and head of year; they will follow up with the student as required.

Exeats For appointments which cannot be made during holiday periods, pupils should bring in a letter from their parents, or parents can send an email, at least 24 hours (and preferably 48 hours) beforehand.

Form tutors will then issue an exeat.

School term dates are published at least a year in advance.We ask parents to work closely with us to ensure minimal disruption to their child’s learning throughout the year.

School lunches School food is freshly prepared, cooked on the premises and served in the refectory and buttery.

Every day there is home-made soup, a choice of a main course including a vegetarian and vegan option, a salad bar, sandwiches and deli, plenty of fresh fruit and dessert. Lunch is an important social aspect of the school day where pupils have the opportunity to catch up with one another. The cost of lunches is included in the school fees.

Travelling Bicycles Cycle helmets, lights and luminous safety bands must be worn. We advise that bicycles brought to the school should be clearly labelled with the owner’s name and they must be locked in the racks provided.

Public transport Clapham Junction rail station is a 10-minute walk away with many bus routes, including the 77 and 219, passing close to the school.

Cars If you drive your child to school, please drop and collect them either on Spencer Park or in Chivalry Road. We kindly ask that drivers do not attempt to turn in front of the school gates. Pupils may not be driven into the school grounds during school hours.

Firefly The school makes use of a platform called Firefly as an efficient means of sharing, and in some cases collecting, information in a secure way online.

Towards the end of the summer holiday, you will be emailed instructions that will allow you to lo gon and see a range of information linked to the school’s curriculum and co-curriculum. Each parent who has an email address registered with the school is able to create their own individual login.

Once on Firefly you will be able to see up-to-date information about your child and be kept informed of relevant school information. On Firefly you will be able to see your child’s timetable, homework tasks, exam results and school reports.

Pupils will also have their own access to Firefly, and this will be shown to them in one of their first IT sessions when they will also be familiarised with the other platforms that the school uses.

Lockers & valuables Pupils are assigned lockers. All valuables should be carefully stored inside the lockers, using the combination padlock each student is issued with when they join the school.

Lost property All lost property can be claimed at the sports complex during breaks and lunch hour. Lost property should be claimed as soon as possible.

Parents are also able to attend half-termly lost property open evenings between 4.00pm and 5.15pm.

Items unclaimed by the end of term are sold in aid of the Emanuel Parents’ Association at the secondhand uniform sale in the summer.

Finance The bursar is responsible for the financial management of the school.

The fees for the autumn term 2021 are £6,715. Fees are payable by direct debit either termly in advance or by monthly instalments with the agreement of the bursar. Interest will be charged on accounts which are not paid by their due date. The governors reserve the right to review the school fees.

There are very few additional charges to the school fees. However, external exam fees, optional school trips and visits are added to the bill, as well as your annual copy of ‘The Portcullis’ (the school magazine) unless you do not wish to receive a copy. Details of fees and expenses will be notified to you by invoice at least 10 days before the start of each term.

Communications Reports on a pupil’s work are sent home three times during the academic year. Of these, two are full written reports. Parents also receive regular communication throughout the year from their child’s head of year and head of section.

For urgent matters you can get a message to your child by phoning the main school number 020 8870 4171 or calling in at reception.

Emanuel parents receive an e-newsletter on a fortnightly basis called ‘The Emanuel Edit’, which promotes and summarises some of the activities and achievements from the previous two weeks.

For day-to-day school matters concerning your child’s pastoral welfare, co-curricular or academic life, please contact the form tutor.

The initial school deposit made on acceptance of a place will be returned without interest at the end of a pupil’s last term, less any sums which may be outstanding at the time (e.g. books not returned).

Academic life

Homework Homework gives pupils the opportunity to work independently to extend and strengthen their understanding of what they have been taught.

It also helps them to identify areas that they are particularly interested in, and areas where they need additional support. It is completed as part of the working partnership between the pupil and the teacher, and we encourage parents to show an interest and motivate their children to do their best in completing what is set.

Details of homework will be entered by 4pm on the day set into the ‘Tasks’ section of Firefly. This system enables parents, staff and pupils to have access to a clear record of what was set, and when it is due (parents will receive their login for Firefly at the start of the autumn term).

Learning Support Emanuel has a dedicated learning support department. Our staff offer support and expertise to help resolve difficulties and promote positive solutions for pupils experiencing obstacles to learning. Pupils and parents can access learning support by speaking with their form tutor. The tutor will liaise with subject teachers to review any concerns as they arise.

Rewards Pupils are awarded commendations via our online system, EMA. Parents and pupils will receive an email every time they receive a commendation.

We reward effort, perseverance and community spirit. There are form tutor and head of section awards and medals for academic achievement.The headmaster gives special awards for contributions to school life in assemblies.

The main purpose of commendations is to reward and encourage individual achievement. Pupils in the Lower School who gain 60 commendations receive a £10 book token from the head of section. Pupils will receive a charity token after 10 commendations to vote on how the school’s charity funds will be donated, and if a pupil achieves 30 or more commendations in a half term, they will be awarded a £5 Amazon voucher.

Sanctions The school’s behaviour policy outlines the range of sanctions used to address both academic and behaviorual issues.

The form The form is the hub of pastoral life at Emanuel.

Every pupil has a form tutor who oversees their holistic life and represents a consistent adult relationship. The form tutor is the child’s daily champion, their supporter and the colleague who helps them achieve their best, takes part in school life and who keeps an eye on their wellbeing.

The tutor is the main point of contact for the parents; a list of all form tutors can be found in the school calendar. Meetings with the form tutor take place at the start of the academic year, but parents may arrange to speak to their child’s form tutor whenever they wish.

Assembly & Chapel Pupils attend year group assemblies and headmaster’s assemblies. They also attend regular chapel. Chapel plays an important role within the school and allows all pupils a chance for personal reflection and spiritual growth.

The present chapel stands at the physical centre of the school. Services usually consist of a hymn, an address by the chaplain, prayers, an anthem sung by the chapel choir and a blessing. The address is accessible to pupils of all faiths and of none and is educational and reflective.

Beyond the form tutor is a head of year, head of house (the organiser of a range of interesting activities that engender a sense of collective identity), head of section (Lower School, Middle School, Sixth Form), counsellors, nurse and the chaplain. Each of these trusted colleagues makes up the matrix of support around a pupil and they play an integral part in ensuring a high level of pastoral welfare.

Registration occurs every morning with the form tutor.Year 6 and 7 pupils have form time with their tutor up to three times a week. On the remaining two days, they see their head of year and have a chapel period. Every alternate week, the pupils meet with their house captain.

Every week the form tutor will check cards, planners, form duties and school uniform.

Life Education The Life Education (PSHE) programme provides a valuable opportunity for pupils to broaden their understanding of issues that impact not only themselves, but the wider community, while preparing for their own futures as global citizens.

From Years 6 to 11, pupils have one period of Life Education each week and learn about a range of relevant political, social and health issues through discussion-based activities led by their form tutor and head of year. In addition, this time is used to educate pupils on how to lead fulfilling, safe and healthy lives, covering topics such as mental and physical health, digital awareness and safety, the environment, careers and finance. The spiral structure of our programme ensures that key statutory topics are revisited as a pupil progresses through the school in age-appropriate ways.

Houses Every pupil at Emanuel belongs to a house. Pupils in each house integrate with other year groups and these form the basis for much of the in-school sports, house competitions and events.

Uniform School uniform is worn by all pupils in school until the end of Year 11. Emanuel School uniform is available to purchase from Schoolblazer.

Boys wear blue shirts which should be tucked into their trousers and with the button done up at the neck with a school tie, navy trousers and plain dark socks.

Girls wear a blue Emanuel blouse, with an Emanuel navy blue four pleat skirt or Emanuel navy blue trousers. Please note that all skirts should be worn on the knee and the blouse should be tucked into the skirt.

Girls may choose to wear opaque navy blue or black tights, or navy ankle socks. Sports or trainer socks are not acceptable.

Both boys and girls wear the Emanuel blazer with the school crest and may wear a grey ‘V’ necked jumper with the school crest.

Shoes must be plain black leather of a traditional style (with flat heels of no more than 2cm in height).Trainers should never be

worn with uniform, even on the way to and from school.

Outdoor coats must be plain and dark in colour. Hooded casual tops and coats with designer logos or other embroidery are not acceptable.

Pupils are allowed one pair of plain silver or gold stud earrings. No other jewellery is allowed.

Mobile phones Pupils may bring mobile phones to school, although they are not essential (and for activities requiring IT in lessons pupils have their personal digital device). If phones or other devices are brought in, they are the pupil’s own responsibility. Lower and Middle School pupils’ phones should be switched off and locked away in lockers at the start of the day. Pupils are not allowed to use their phones during the school day unless they have been given permission by a member of staff.

We are aware of the risks involved in social media use among young people, especially given that most social media platforms have a legal age requirement of 13 and WhatsApp, another popular chat platform, has a legal age of 16. Emanuel pupils are therefore strongly encouraged to avoid using them, and parents are encouraged to monitor the usage of these at home.Where possible, we would advise pupils not to have access to a smart phone.

Laptops/tablets Pupils should bring their personal digital device (e.g. laptop or tablet) to all their lessons. All devices must be password protected and must be primarily used for educational purposes.

The below summarises some of the main points from our Laptop and Mobile Device Policy. Pupils should be familiar with this in its full form.

The responsibility for any device brought into school sits with the individual owner.

The school is not liable for any device lost or stolen on campus.

Pupils are encouraged to use appropriate protective cases or decals to protect and distinguish their possessions.

Pupils are responsible for charging their device so it has enough power for lessons.

For the majority of lessons and for examinations pupils are still expected to hand write their work. Practice exams and essays should still be handwritten unless a pupil is authorised to use a device by the learning support department.

Pupils working on a device are expected to store all of this work electronically within their subject’s OneNote Class Notebook.

Pupils have a responsibility for backing up their coursework, notes or assignments to avoid losing work. Storing their work using the school’s systems, such as OneDrive, will allow work to be backed up automatically and accessible from any device.

The pupil is ultimately responsible for the functioning of his/her device, unless it is a device provided through the school.

The school has in place protection against online activities to protect pupils in school, even when using their own personal devices.

Further details about these protections are available from the IT department on request.

Counselling There are three school counsellors who cover Monday to Friday between them. The counselling service is open to any pupil at Emanuel. Sessions last 30-50 minutes and appointment times can be varied so that time is not lost from any one subject.

Pupils are normally offered at least 12 sessions, but this can vary depending on the individual’s needs at the time.

Additionally, each of the counsellors offers a dropin service over the lunch break, where any pupil is able to drop in individually or with a friend/s to discuss anything which may be on their mind at that time. Often this is a positive space to discuss friendship dynamics and challenges.

Our service is confidential; pupils can talk about concerns without fear of them being discussed elsewhere. However, if there is any concern for the safety of the child or another person, this will be passed on immediately to the school’s designated safeguarding lead.

Referrals can be made by the child or the parents directly to the counsellor, the tutor, or to a chosen pastoral colleague, such as the head of year. Counselling can be accessed by any pupil, but for those in Years 6 and 7, parental consent will need to be sought. Pupils in years above can access without consent although, where possible, the counsellors always encourage pupils to share that they have chosen to access counselling with their parents.

All information is kept securely by the counselling service in line with current data protection regulations. After the counselling has finished your child will be given an evaluation form that they can complete anonymously and return.

Medical The medical room is staffed from 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Pupils can see the school nurses during the course of the day.

All parents should read the school’s Allergens Policy, which is available on the website. Parents should be aware that, from time to time, pupils hold charity bake sales. Although nuts are not allowed to be included, pupils with such allergies should not eat from these sales.

Parents must inform the school (either through their child’s tutor, or the nurses directly) of any medical changes that are likely to affect the physical and mental wellbeing of their child so we can do our best to look after them.

If medication is required during school hours, the pupil must give the medication to the school nurses with an accompanying letter/email from the pupil’s parents or guardians which specifies the pupil’s name, the name of the medicine and full directions for use.

The pupil should attend the medical room to take the medicine under the supervision of one of the school nurses or their appointed deputy. It will be returned to the pupil at the end of the treatment course.

Pupils with asthma Pupils known to have asthma who use inhalers are strongly recommended to keep their inhalers with them at all times.

Medicines for pain relief The school nurses have the authority to administer medication as they see fit. The drug of choice is usually 500mg of paracetemol, or 1g if over the age of 16, every four hours. Ibuprofen will not be given to any pupil with asthma. Throat lozenges, antacids and hayfever remedies are also given at the school nurse’s discretion. If you do not wish your child to be given such medication, please ensure the information is on the medical form.

Sport Sport and activity is a key aspect of a pupil’s life at Emanuel. All pupils are encouraged to take part and try new opportunities, regardless of skill or experience.

A number of sports practices and clubs take place at lunchtime and after school on-site, at Blagdons Sports Ground or ‘away’ at other venues. The school boathouse is located on the north bank of the River Thames, just east of Barnes Bridge.

Emanuel School rowing teams regularly compete at national level.

Transport is provided for away fixtures or those taking place at Blagdons Sports Ground unless otherwise stated. On the day of fixtures pupils should meet at the sports ground. We prefer all 24 | Co-curricular life

our pupils to travel together. However, if it is more convenient for you to transport your child directly, or if you would like your child to travel home independently or with an adult who is not their parent, it is important you contact your child’s coach via email 24 hours in advance.

PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT ENGAGEMENT

There are three strands to the sporting provision at Emanuel: Performance (covering our core sports), Development and Engagement (both covering additional sports).

Performance Our aim is to provide opportunities for our talented sports players to excel in sports and to aspire towards representative honours where possible. We aim to ensure all pupils have access to excellent coaching and facilities and provide competitive inter-school fixtures. These challenge our pupils, encourage them to grow in their sport and help them to understand the importance and value of competitive sport. Our performance sports are cricket, rowing, hockey, netball, football and rugby.

Development Our aim is to provide a range of supplementary sports and activities which are delivered within the extracurricular clubs and games programme to support the athletic development of our pupils. Pupils participate in seasonal inter-school competitions consisting of athletics, cross-country, fives, girls’ football, swimming and water polo.

Engagement A range of additional sports are available to ensure all pupils participate in some sporting activity and learn the value of regular exercise for health, friendship, and challenge. These cover extracurricular clubs such as climbing, dance and tennis and the senior games programme (featuring over 20 activities such as yoga, spinning and squash).

Music Music plays a vital and vibrant role in co-curricular life. Pupils of all levels of experience are encouraged to take part and try new opportunities.

Music is timetabled into the curriculum, with the school orchestra, choirs, chapel choir, jazz band, concert band, rock groups and a great variety of ensembles and groups playing on a more informal basis. The Music department performs a large choral work every year, with many Lower School pupils participating, in addition to a joint musical production with the Drama department in the spring term and a festive concert in the summer term. There is an annual house music competition where pupils throughout the school represent their house.

Individual music lessons are available for all levels, from the complete beginner to those seeking university scholarships. The director of music will be happy to discuss options with you. Given the high take-up throughout the school, individual music lessons take place during the teaching day and so pupils have to miss subject lessons to attend them. Instrumental lessons are put on a rota at different times each week so that pupils do not keep missing the same subject. Pupils in the Upper Sixth are timetabled music lessons in a study period and those in Year 11 will be timetabled out of lessons. Pupils take responsibility for catching up on missed work.

Clubs & societies There are over 70 clubs and societies for pupils to get involved in. Our clubs and societies help to foster passions, develop friendships and give pupils a chance to lead and enjoy group activities with like-minded peers from across year groups.

Details of all of our clubs and societies are available near the beginning of the autumn term, when we hold an annual clubs and societies fair to promote all of the activities pupils can get involved in. All pupils are encouraged to participate in some of these additional activities and, most of all, to have fun!

Pupils from Year 8 onwards and their parents are welcome to join the Emanuel School Boat Club (ESBCS), which provides social, catering and fundraising support for our crews at home and away.

Pupils in Year 9 have the opportunity to become involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, 28 | Co-curricular life

which has a tradition of developing confidence, teamwork and determination. The award is very popular at Emanuel with over 150 pupils currently taking part. The school runs the award at Bronze and Silver levels.We do not offer Gold at Emanuel, but it is available via an external supplier (Activ Adventures Ltd).

Each award has four sections.As well as completing a practice and an assessed expedition, pupils are encouraged to take up or continue with hobbies which can contribute to the award.

The Battersea Rise Trust All of the school’s outreach and fundraising is focused around the key aims of the Battersea Rise Trust (BRT). The Trust centres on our desire to ensure all aspirational and talented girls and boys have an opportunity to learn and grow at Emanuel, regardless of financial circumstance. The BRT has three key aims:

1. To

welcome more children to Emanuel on a transformative free place. We want to offer more pupils, who would otherwise never have the opportunity, the chance to benefit from a life-changing education at Emanuel School.

2. To support our ambitious estate plan.

We want to ensure that Emanuel staff and pupils have access to excellent educational and sporting facilities.

3. To enhance social mobility in south west London. We want to harness our pupils’ leadership alongside our educational expertise and the school’s resources to improve opportunities for children in local primary schools that contain a high numbers of pupils on free school meals.

Emanuel 430:Transforming Futures In 2024, the school will celebrate its 430th anniversary. Over the next four years, we want to make a significant impact on the goals of the Battersea Rise Trust, run exciting events and provide a range of opportunities under the banner of Emanuel 430. At the heart of this campaign is our desire to transform our pupils’ futures and the school has committed to welcoming 43 children on a fully funded place by 2024. It is our belief that these transformative bursaries have the biggest impact, ensuring we are offering children, who would otherwise never be able to attend Emanuel, the chance of a life-changing education.

The Emanuel Society The Emanuel Society sits alongside the Battersea Rise Trust. The Emanuel Society incorporates members of our wider community – pupils, parents, alumni (OEs), staff and friends of the school – and provides opportunities for a lifelong connection for anyone associated with the school.

Groups within the society include the Emanuel Parents’ Association, The Anne Dacre Club and Emanuel Careers and Opportunities Network (ECON), an online portal for current pupils which allows them to harness the vast array of career experience Emanuel parents can offer.

Estate Development We have a wonderful historic building but also ambitious plans to improve the science, art and sporting facilities on the school site. Our aim is to create more subject-specific classrooms and develop engaging relaxation spaces and worldclass sporting facilities by our 430th anniversary.

Support Emanuel School Our vision is for the school to remain at the forefront of educational provision while offering an increasing amount of free school places to children who would otherwise never be able to attend. Community partnerships All pupils at Emanuel are encouraged to be outward-looking, to contribute to the community, whether local or global, to learn to notice others around them and to look outside their own needs.

Pupils regularly support the work of charities with an annual charity week, where a number of events are hosted for pupils and staff.This is supplemented by a number of one-off activities throughout the year which allow pupils to raise further funds for their chosen charities.

The most effective projects are two-way and we partner with a range of schools. We work collaboratively with state secondary schools on projects such as public speaking, a Model United Nations conference, concerts, art projects and film-making schemes. Year 6 pupils have a special relationship with Christ Church Primary School and work on a number of enrichment projects through the year with their peers, learning about a variety of crafts from robotics to mime.

Primary Ambitions Our Primary Ambitions programme builds on the long-standing relationships we share with local schools. Every Friday afternoon, Lower Sixth pupils mentor, teach and coach primary school pupils using the wide range of facilities at Emanuel and provide opportunities in the creative and performing arts, STEM, sports and other academic subjects.

Our aspiration is two-fold: we expect our pupils to thrive with this responsibility and further develop confidence, empathy and kindness – all traits that we hold dear at our school. In addition, we hope that the programme will inspire and challenge other young people to relish newfound opportunities, explore new friendships and celebrate their accomplishments.

Beyond Emanuel Each year, our pupils leave Emanuel with a wide variety of individual talents and ambitions in many different areas.

Our higher education destinations include Oxbridge and other top Russell Group institutions.

In addition, pupils go on to drama schools such as RADA and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, art colleges such as Kingston, Camberwell College of Arts and the Royal Drawing School, music conservatoires including the Royal College of Music and universities overseas including UNC Chapel Hill, McGill and University of Minnesota.

We offer a detailed programme for planning progression, supporting pupils at every stage of their decision-making and application process. The careers department provides information and one-to-one consultations for pupils on possible routes into different industries, helps organise work placements and advises on applications for internships and apprenticeships. centre is well-stocked with guidance literature and practice material for entrance examinations such as GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test), SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and ACT (American College Testing).

Year 11 pupils are invited to our annual careers convention while Upper Sixth pupils have the opportunity to apply for internships exclusive to Emanuel in the fields of finance, marketing, technology and tourism. Pupils also have access to ECON (Emanuel Careers & Opportunities Network) – a database run by the Emanuel Parents’ Association which allows pupils access to parents working in a variety of fields to offer support and advice about careers.

It is our hope that our higher education support, careers guidance, parents’ network and entrepreneurial and mentoring programmes give our pupils every chance of success in the years to come.

Emanuel Parents’ Association The EPA was founded in 1933 with the aim of promoting contact and communication between parents, staff and the school. The purpose of the EPA is to organise social and educational events for the Emanuel community.

If you are new to Emanuel, your help, ideas and views are needed and much appreciated. If you would like to get involved in the EPA in any way at all you will be most welcome. Management meetings usually take place two or three times a term. Many parents, pupils and staff (past and present) help out with EPA events. Over the last year we have organised a quiz night, wine and cheese social events, second-hand clothes sales and several educational seminars. EPA events are well-publicised beforehand in the newsletter.
