A SUMMARY OF THE ISI INSPECTION REPORT MARCH 2023

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMASTER I am delighted to explain that in both; personal development and academic (and other) achievement, Emanuel is recognised as ‘excellent’ by ISI. As with the compliance part of a whole school inspection, the requirements and rigour of the educational quality aspects of an inspection have also grown significantly in recent years. 8 inspectors in our school for 3 days, seeing a high number of lessons, speaking with pupils and surveying parents and pupils, is part testament to this. I was so pleased, however, that the inspection was thorough and that the team of inspectors took the time and had the resources to really come to know our school. On the final day of the visit to Emanuel, the reporting (lead) inspector read through his findings to senior colleagues, governors and me. At the end, he asked if we felt they had ‘captured our school.’ I was very proud to say that they had, recognising the dedication and expertise given to pastoral care, co-curricular life and above all in the classrooms. I have no doubt that part of the inspection team’s understanding of our school was due to the initial surveys, and I want to thank every parent for the time and care taken to complete them. At a time when there are evident pressures and challenges for schools, I am very glad to see Emanuel, its teachers, pupils, support staff, parents and governors, so committed to doing our very best each day and remaining ambitious in our long term aims. OUR PUPILS The quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements is

EXCELLENT 1. Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes. Their success in extra-curricular activities is extremely strong. 2. Pupils are diligent, strongly motivated and conscientious. They engage fully, enthusiastically and maturely in lessons… They are able to move seamlessly between collaboration and independent activities in order to refine and perfect their work. 3. Pupils are eloquent, erudite and articulate and consistently express their views succinctly. 4. Pupils have a sense of pride and ownership of their learning. 5. Pupils show a highly effective aptitude for decision making and relish opportunities to make choices about their learning and wellbeing. 6. Pupils are excellent communicators, highly articulate speakers and mature listeners. 7. Pupils develop deep and mature qualities of self-knowledge, self-esteem, self-confidence, self-discipline and resilience. 4

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT The report is full of praise for our pupils’ academic achievements and their mature and reflective approaches to developing their learning effectively. Inspectors were extremely impressed by the high expectations of our teachers which pupils are rising to meet, and our pupils’ work is recognised as being beyond the level expected for their ages. 1. Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes. 2. Pupils’ knowledge, skills and understanding across a broad range of subjects is excellent. Most pupils work at levels well beyond their chronological age and clearly relish the challenges this presents. 3. Pupils’ study skills in a wide range of learning environments are extremely well developed…Pupils analyse, hypothesise and synthesise across a range of subjects.

PUPILS ARE SELF-REFLECTIVE, CONFIDENT AND EAGER TO IMPROVE 4. Pupils enjoy personal and academic success as a result of the school’s encouragement to develop their interest and their talent in a range of regional and national competitions, for example in maths, computing, chemistry and art. 5. They demonstrate a clear understanding of the type of activities that help them improve their performance. They make frequent reference to the value of effective teacher feedback, use of exemplar work and the importance of being challenged. 7

PASTORAL CARE The report acknowledges the secure and inclusive environment inculcated by our highly effective pastoral care, in which pupils can develop and flourish, whatever their aptitudes and interests. 1. Pupils’ self-knowledge, self-esteem, self-discipline and resilience are securely well-developed. 2. Pupils’ spiritual awareness and appreciation of the non-material aspects of life develop extremely well over their time in the school. 3. Pupils exhibit a well-developed confident aptitude for decision making and relish opportunities to make choices about their learning and well-being.

PUPILS’ CONTRIBUTION TO OTHERS,THE SCHOOL AND THE WIDER COMMUNITY IS GENEROUS. 4. Pupils’ knowledge of how to stay safe and how to be physically and mentally healthy is extremely welldeveloped. 5. The secure atmosphere and culture of the school enables pupils to have the confidence to grow and succeed in their learning. 8

PASSIONATE AND COMMITTED STAFF The unstinting commitment of Emanuel staff to providing holistic support for pupils’ development is fully acknowledged by the report. 1. The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils. 2. This high level of attainment is a consequence of an aspirational learning environment propagated by the vision and values of committed senior leaders, excellent teaching in well-resourced accommodation, fulfilling the school’s ambitious aims. 3. Pupils demonstrate excellent levels of academic progress both within lessons and over time as a result of a sensitive and individualised approach that stretches and challenges all pupils. 4. Highly detailed tracking, monitoring and focused interventions contribute to significant value being added to all pupils’ progress including those with SEND and EAL.

CO-CURRICULAR LIFE The exceptional co-curricular offer at Emanuel, and its enormous significance in the developing lives of our pupils is fully acknowledged in the report. 1. Their success in extra-curricular activities is extremely strong. 2. In line with the governors’ aims, pupils enjoy an exceptionally broad range of activities beyond the classroom. 3. Pupils wholeheartedly participate in the extensive programme of sport, culminating in over a thousand annual fixtures across a range of disciplines including rugby, hockey, netball, football, athletics and cricket. 4. Pupils expressed the sheer joy they experience when collaborating in performance activities and recognised the positive impact this has on their well-being. They spoke at length about the transformative power the creative arts and physical exercise can have on their wellbeing and academic success.

INCLUSIVITY, EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY The unstinting commitment of Emanuel staff to providing holistic support for pupils’ development is fully acknowledged by the report. 1. Pupils express their strong voices and identities in a number of areas which are important to the school community. 2. Pupils speak highly of these channels of diversity and cite positive changes to the curriculum. 3. Pupils’ respect for themselves and others in their community is mature and highly developed. Pupils are tolerant and inclusive and their attitudes to diversity and inclusion are excellent. 4. Senior pupils support local primary school pupils are part of the school’s outreach programme. Senior pupils commented that it was a great honour to undertake these tasks and recognised that they would gain as much benefit from the process as the recipients.
