Partnerships with primary schools
On the 19th June we held a thank you event marking the achievement of funding 20 free places at Emanuel.This ambition, an echo of Lady Anne Dacre’s original charter for the school, started in 2016 and was achieved a year ahead of schedule due to the generous support we received from across the Emanuel community.
Emanuel has partnered with 20 local primary schools. Across these schools the average percentage of children on free school meals is 50%, in comparison with a national average of 14%. Every Friday afternoon, as part of their timetable, our lower sixth form pupils will mentor, coach and teach small groups from these primary schools. Our aim is that by using our facilities and experience in the creative and performing arts, sports, music and academic subjects we can help improve outcomes across these partner schools.This outreach can make a significant difference to children across Wandsworth but also helps develop our pupils into confident, outward-looking leaders who contribute to the community.We are very grateful to a number of generous donors who have supported this project.
Our efforts here remain central to the school’s vision, as we aim to ensure all aspirational and talented girls and boys have an opportunity to learn and grow at Emanuel, regardless of financial circumstances.We have seen how a free school place can really change a child’s life and it has been humbling to meet and hear the testimonies of current and former bursary pupils and their families.We continue to believe that increasing diversity at Emanuel benefits the whole school community, welcoming new and varied perspectives and preparing our pupils for future life. Over half of Emanuel staff personally supported the fully funded places campaign, while pupils at Emanuel made it their joint top supported charity through their commendation tokens. Over the course of the campaign we saw incredibly generous gifts from current parents, past pupils, governors and friends of the school with over 325 individuals donating.

Thank you from the chair of governors As an alumnus and now chair of governors I know what a special place Emanuel is. It remains so because of the care of the teachers and staff at Emanuel but also because of the continued support that the school receives from alumni, current parents and friends of the school. I want to thank everyone who donated to the school this year and helped us achieve the aims of the 20 Fully Funded Places campaign. Emanuel provided me with an opportunity to explore my potential and very fortunately that education was free: my parents could not have afforded to send me to a fee-paying school. I am delighted that with the help of so many donors, from across the Emanuel community, we are now extending that transformative opportunity to others. Offering twenty free places was a significant milestone but the need for support continues. This year we began the
Emanuel 430:Transforming Futures campaign and have set ourselves ambitious targets in line with the school's 430th anniversary in 2024.The signs so far are good; we have already received extremely generous support from new donors as well as many current supporters pledging to repeat their gifts.These goals and the wider vision of the school can only be achieved with the continued encouragement, commitment and support of students, staff, parents and alumni. Thank you again for supporting Emanuel; it is clear that together we can achieve so much.

Funding a specific place at Emanuel Donors can support an individual child’s education at Emanuel for any designated period of time. Donors who support a child’s education for a term or longer are given regular updates on the impact of their gift and the difference it is making to the life of a specific pupil.
Funding an enduring free place Donors can also choose to contribute towards a perpetual free place. In 1972 we set up the Emanuel School General
Charitable Trust (ESGCT) with the express purpose of creating a sustainable bursary programme for children who would otherwise be unable to attend the school.The main way we aim to build the trust is through supporters remembering Emanuel in their will. By choosing to support the school in this way your gift can have a continual impact on the lives of both the students and the school. Currently income from the trust supports 6 places at Emanuel in perpetuity, but over the next four years we hope to build the endowment and ensure we can fund 20 free and transformative bursaries each year.

Transformative free places The impact of a free place at Emanuel
I am hugely grateful for the education Emanuel has given me and conscious that the successes I have had and my high aspirations are largely down to the opportunity I was given. I am very aware of how fortunate I am to have been a part of such a special community, with teachers who have shown care for my wellbeing as opposed to simply my grades. Emanuel has taught me so many lessons – how to be confident, work hard, be outward-looking and to aim high. I’ve been able to play first team cricket and rugby, listen to several big speakers and even apply for Oxbridge.These are opportunities I wouldn’t have had without a fully funded place. A free place at Emanuel has changed my life. Before I came here I had never experienced anything like the extraordinary teaching that I now receive on a daily basis.The teachers care deeply about their subjects and take a profound and genuine interest in their students’ development. To be introduced to the wonders of curiosity and enthusiasm when you’re young is to be given a very valuable gift. I remember my time at the school very fondly, I made friends there that I still keep in touch with. I was at Emanuel at a time of great change, when we moved from being a single-sex grammar school to a co-educational, independent, fee paying school, as an indirect result of the education policies of the then Labour government. My parents could not have afforded to pay to send me to Emanuel and without a free place I would have been deprived of a rich and rewarding education that enabled me to go on to a first class university and a fulfilling career. I have been impressed on a couple of recent visits to see how the school has developed from the institution I recall from the 1970s; the facilities that are available to children these days, and the opportunities that they have as a result are so much better and more extensive than I remember from my time there. It’s important that those chances in life are not just restricted to those whose parents have money and that bright children from less privileged or fortunate backgrounds also have some opportunity, as I did, to experience the wonderful education that Emanuel can offer. The Battersea Rise Trust & Emanuel 430 Our vision in the run-up to the school’s 430th anniversary in 2024 The Emanuel school Battersea Rise Trust (BRT) is the central organisation for the school’s charitable vision. It has four core aims, each of which have a tangible goal to achieve over the next five years.With the support of the whole Emanuel community we can achieve these ambitious targets.

Transformative free places
At the heart of this campaign is our desire to transform our students’ futures and the school has committed to welcoming 43 children on a fully funded place by our 430th anniversary in 2024. It is our belief that these transformative bursaries have the biggest impact, ensuring we are offering children, who would otherwise never be able to attend Emanuel, the chance of a life-changing education.
Community partnerships The Battersea Rise Trust’s community partnership programme is focused on providing opportunities for the pupils and schools with the fewest resources in our community. Over the next five years, through the Primary Ambitions initiative, our lower sixth pupils will work with and teach the children of 20 local primary schools, impacting over1000 pupils. Other initiatives include sports tournaments, drama workshops, swimming outreach, amazing science experiences and more.

Estate development From its foundation, Emanuel has benefitted from financial support and benefaction.The excellent facilities enjoyed by the current pupils are a direct result of the generosity and support of previous pupils and their families.We have ambitious plans for the development of our educational and sporting facilities over the next five years.
Emanuel Society With the introduction of a termly newsletter we aim to better inform our community of current opportunities and provide news of our key associations. Over the next five years, we hope to introduce new groups, allowing those associated with Emanuel to be more connected to the school than ever before. One new association starting in 2019 is the Anne Dacre Club, a group that will meet for exclusive visits, lectures and dinners all with an Emanuel twist.We aim to offer money-can’t-buy experiences through leveraging the phenomenal talents and achievements of our alumni and parent body.

Efficient Giving
Regular giving
If you’re a UK taxpayer, Emanuel can reclaim the basic rate of tax you’ve already paid on your donation.This means that a £1 donation is worth £1.25 to the school. If you’re a higher rate taxpayer, you can also claim back the difference between higher rate and basic rate tax on the value of your donation.
We really appreciate regular gifts, standing orders or direct debits, which traditionally support free places at Emanuel.These gifts allow us to plan for the future and make a huge difference, providing even more children with the life-changing opportunity to come to Emanuel. One-off gifts These can be of any amount and allocated to an area of your choosing; bursaries, outreach, facilities or departmental support. Please let us know where you would like your gift to go. Sponsoring a specific pupil Supporters can choose to sponsor a specific pupil’s education at Emanuel.This can be for any period of time and allows a donor to see the direct impact of their gift. If you are interested in this option, please contact the development office for further details.
A gift to Emanuel in your will has tax advantages for both the school and your family. As a registered charity, donations are free from Inheritance Tax while gifts of shares and properties can be exempt from Capital Gains Tax.

Leaving a gift in your will Legacies have supported Emanuel from the time of its foundation and are an ideal way of helping the school today and into the future. Gifts have ranged from several hundred pounds to a percentage of an estate, helping the school to offer free places for generations to come. If you make a gift to Emanuel in your will, and do not wish your gift to remain anonymous, you will be invited to exclusive events and be among the first to hear news about the school and our plans for the future. Gifts of all sizes are very important to us and are warmly welcomed.
