A big congratulations to our FMA members!

On behalf of the FMA Board of Directors, congratulations to tonight’s Charlie Award winners! This year’s submissions vibrantly demonstrate the continuing transformation of publishing in the State of Florida. It is an exciting time to be in our industry.

It was a much simpler time when the FMA began awarding Charlies back in 1957. Well before the advent of digital publishing, it was a time when all content was produced on a single platform. Yet today, as the industry evolves at an often dizzying pace, Florida magazine professionals remain committed to creating content that engages, informs, and entertains their readers. And they now have more platforms than ever from which to share that content.

This year’s awards demonstrate the highest quality of work across all those media. And the competition was tough, with an increase in submissions— more than 570 entries, in total. On the following pages, we are excited to recognize and celebrate that publishing excellence from throughout the state—from writing and design, to outstanding contributions in photography, digital publishing, and marketing, among others.

A big thank you to our judges for thoroughly vetting all of the submissions. These 14 publishing professionals brought a wealth of talent and experience to the awards process and selflessly volunteered their time to evaluate this year’s entries. They hail from 11 different states outside Florida, ensuring the Charlie Award winners continue to truly represent the best Florida magazine publishing has to offer.

The Charlie Awards are named in honor of the late Charles G. Welborn, Jr., a longtime professor of journalism and communications at the University of Florida whose numerous contributions to FMA and the publishing industry have been instrumental in furthering the growth of magazines in our state.

Mackenzie Behm The 2019 Doug Damerst Scholarship Winner Mackenzie Behm, a student pursuing her B.S. in Journalism at the University of Florida, was selected as a result of her outstanding academic and extracurricular experience.

Her considerable experience creating content, both written and video, for local and national publications shows a dedication to the profession that extends beyond the classroom. She is a first-class storyteller who has tackled topics as varied as the aftermath of Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle, oncampus hazing and racism, and a scientific argument for why pineapple belongs on pizza.

FMA honors the life and career of Doug Damerst by awarding an annual $1,000 cash prize in his name. The award goes to a student majoring in journalism or communications at a fouryear, Florida-based college who demonstrates exemplary dedication, drive, and potential.
