Instructions:

Christmas Sugar Cookies

Ingredients: For the Cookie Dough: 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature) 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional) 1/2 teaspoon salt For Decorating: Royal icing (store-bought or homemade) Assorted Christmas sprinkles, coloured sugar, edible decorations Food colouring (optional)

Prepare the Cookie Dough: In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside.

In a separate large bowl, beat the room temperature butter and granulated sugar together until the mixture is creamy and smooth. This should take about 2-3 minutes.

Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until well combined.

Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, mixing until the dough comes together.

Divide the dough into two equal portions, form them into disks, wrap them in plastic wrap, and chill them in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour (or overnight).

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Roll Out the Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out one portion of the chilled dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Kids can have fun using Christmas-themed cookie cutters to cut out shapes from the dough.

Bake the Cookies: Place the cut-out cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a bit of space between them.

Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Be sure to supervise the baking process, as the cookies can quickly go from perfect to overbaked.

Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Decorate the Cookies: Once the cookies are completely cooled, it's time for the fun part – decorating! You can use store-bought royal icing or make your own using powdered sugar and a little water or milk.

Let the kids get creative by spreading the icing on the cookies and decorating them with Christmas sprinkles, colored sugar, and edible decorations.

You can also use food coloring to tint the icing different colors for even more festive fun.

Allow the Icing to Set: Let the decorated cookies sit for a while to allow the icing to set and harden.

Now, you and your kids have homemade Christmas sugar cookies to enjoy and share with family and friends during the holiday season. Enjoy your baking adventure!
